Course Synopsis: Highway Materials, Sub Grade, Sub Base and Base Courses Soil
Stabilization and Soil Aggregates in Road Constructions, Low-
Cost Roads, Production, Properties and Uses of Bituminous
Materials and Mix Design Methods,
Design, Construction and Maintenance of Flexible and Rigid
Road Pavements, Equipment,
Railways, General Requirements, Alignment, Permanent Way,
Station and Yards, Signaling, Points and Crossings, Maintenance.
Learning Outcomes (LO): Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Distinguish between Flexible and Rigid Pavement in
terms of their structure and load distribution capability.
2. Analyse suitability of soil as subbase and/or subgrade
material of pavement
3. Design Bituminous Concrete Mixture
4. Design Flexible and Rigid Pavement
5. Identify and analyze different pavement failures
6. Calculate sleeper density, sleeper spacing, maximum
axle load taken by rail. Distinguish among different
stations, yards, and platforms.
