Personal Philosophy of Nursing Paper

NURS 401: Professional Development for Baccalaureate Nursing

Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to discover his or her personal philosophy
of nursing, as it exists at the beginning of academic journey toward the BSN.
Student Approach to Assignment
I approached this philosophy of nursing assignment by examining the services I provide to my
patients, observing nurses in the hospital caring for their patients with dignity and values, and
researching nursing theories and ethics. I believe each individual has unique needs with his or
her own basic religion, food, and language. From this assignment I developed my critical
thinking, professionalism and cultural nursing practice to give individuals effective, safe, and
customized care.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
I feel this philosophy of nursing is necessary to be included in my portfolio because it resonates
deep within my soul to treat and care for patients. It helps me understand the essential purpose of
nursing. It also represents fundamental nursing theories, values, and beliefs that guide all my
clinical decisions. I have improved from this assignment because I consider others’ cultural
values before my own.
Critical Thanking
 Use nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional practice
I used Leininger’s Cultural Care model to guide my nursing practice. I apply her theory
of caring for patients’ values and beliefs. For example, one of my patients had immigrated from
China. I understood Chinese people believed that cold food and beverages will increase their
sickness. Instead, I offered them hot water and cooked foods.
 Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture

In this paper I described how I applied one of the nursing principles by supporting patient
autonomy. I revised my clinical interventions by allowing my patients to make their own
decisions. For example, I allowed one of my diabetic patients to insert an insulin injection by
herself, based on the evidence that my patient had been doing this for fifteen years. I focused on
the importance of my patients’ goals by building up the patient’s independence.
Professionalism
 Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to clinical situations
that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics, and advocacy for patient well-being
and preferences
In this paper I discussed how I applied the moral principle of nonmaleficence and
beneficence to advocate for my patient’s well-being. For example, I had an alcohol withdrawal
male patient. During my shift, he was acting very agitated and screaming, and he hit his head on
the bed side rails. I followed the CIWA protocol and gave him Ativan to prevent him from
injuring himself.

Nursing Practice
 Implements nursing care practices as appropriate to provide holistic health care to
diverse populations across the lifespan

In this paper I describe how I gave my patients holistic health care by providing them
emotional support. For example, my 86-years-old female stroke patient was sad because her son
and daughter were unable to visit her since she was admitted into the hospital. I brought a chair
to sit close to her and hold her hand. I took my time to listening her life stories. She appreciated
me supporting her emotionally.
Culture
 Articulates an understanding of how human behavior is affected by culture, race,
religion, gender, lifestyle, and age

In this paper I discussed that I respect and understand patients’ own culture which affects
their behavior. For example, one day, I took care of a patient who came from Mexico. I
discussed the nursing education involving with her husband. In their culture, men are the
decision makers of the house. Also, before I demonstrated a nursing procedure for the patient, I
explained and got permission from both wife and husband.
