Philosophy of Nursing
NURS 300- Introduction to Theories and Concepts I
NURS 431- Transition to Professional Nursing Practice
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to enable the student to rediscover
his or her personal philosophy of nursing as it exists upon the completion of
the baccalaureate nursing program.
Student Approach to Assignment
The choices that we make are that which is guided our sense of
morality, responsibility, and beliefs. The main driving force behind our
personal philosophy is our morals, beliefs, costumes, and values. After
completion of this assignment I was able to look at my own personal
philosophy of nursing. I was better able to understand exactly what theories,
values, and beliefs help steer my practice a professional nurse. Looking at
what my nursing philosophy was at the beginning and what it is now is
shocking, my philosophy has not changed too much but rather the depth of
my new graduate philosophy is so much deeper than when I first started my
journey. I will utilize everything I have learned about myself through writing
this paper and apply my newly defined philosophies and apply them to my
nursing career.
Reason for Inclusion of this Assignment in the Portfolio
This required portfolio assignment allowed me to expand my knowledge and
understanding of the nursing framework and major principles of nursing
practice. These values are laid out in the nurses great eights. The following
are objectives outlined:
Critical Thinking
Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide
professional practice.
Example: In the paper I was able to discuss three nursing theorist
related to the assumptions using Madeline Leiningers theory of
Diversity and Universality for nurse and the cultural differences.
Nightingales Environmental Theory to discuss the community and
the nurse. Finally I used Peplaus Theory of Interpersonal
Relationships for the nurse and health care professionals.
Leadership
Articulates the values of the profession and the role of the nurse as
member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
Example: In the paper my values are outlined as the principle of my
nursing practice are discussed through my paper. With the American
Nursing Association supporting my personal nursing philosophy with
data.
Professionalism
Applies an ethical decision-making framework and legal guidelines to
clinical situations that incorporate moral concepts, professional ethics,
and advocacy for patient well-being and preferences.
Example: In the paper nonmaleficence and justice were discussed
as my ethical principles that guide my practice. With the help of the
Standards of Nursing Practice helped support my personal
philosophy with data. Specific detailed examples are discussed
further in detail in the paper.
Culture
Integrates knowledge of cultural diversity in performing nursing
interventions.
Example: When writing the paper I discussed the assumption
regarding the relationship between nurse and client and the cultural
diversity. It is important for a nurse to know and understand the
culture of someone else to be able to come up with a plan of care
beneficial for everyone. Nurses must be able to identify the cultural
needs and adjust to accommodate them as well as respect them.
