MODULE 7: How Stable am I?

Triangle Congruence
LESSON 1: Defined and Undefined terms in Geometry
LEARNING COMPETENCY 41: Describes and illustrates
the need for an axiomatic structure of a mathematical
system in general, and in Geometry in particular, defined
and undefined terms.

I. OBJECTIVES
a. Describe a point, line and plane (undefined terms).
b. Define collinear points, non-collinear points, coplanar points, non-coplanar points,
segment, ray.
c. Appreciate the importance of knowing the defined terms.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Definition of Congruent Triangles
Sub - Topic: Defined and Undefined Terms in Geometry
Materials: Cartolina, marker, powerpoint presentation

C

Statements:

1. The corner of the box represents a point.

2. The edge of the box represents a line.
3. The top of the box represents a plane.
4. Points E and F are collinear.
5. Points A,B, C are noncollinear.
6. Points C,D,E,F are coplanar.
7. Points C,D,G,H are non coplanar.
8. The extending lines below the box represents a ray.

2. Analysis

1. What is a point? How do you describe it?

2. What is a line? How do you describe it?
3. What is a plane? How do you describe it?
4. What can you say about collinear points?
5. What do you mean by non-collinear points?
6. What can you say about coplanar points?
7. What do you mean by non-coplanar points?
8. What can you say about the ray?

4. Guided Practice

Consider the figure at the right to name and identify the following.
1. points collinear with points T
2. two segments coplanar with plane J. B T C
3. non-coplanar points
4. two points that are not collinear with point H J XH D
5. name two rays J
X Y F

2
4. Independent Practice
Use the figure to answer the following.

1. 3 collinear points
2. two non-collinear points to line
3. 4 coplanar points
4. 3 non-coplanar points
5. Name 3 rays

5. Generalization

Point denotes a position in space and has no dimension. When represented by a

dot,it is named by capital letters.
A This is point A.

Line is infinitely long, that is, it extends on both directions without

end. This is line AB.
A B
Plane is a flat surface. It extends infinitely in all directions.

Plane A

Collinear points are points on the same line.

Non-collinear points are points not on the same line.

Coplanar points are points on the same plane.

3
Non-coplanar points are points not on the same plane.

Segment is a part of a line consisting of two points and all points between them.

A B segment AB

Ray is a part of a line that starts at an endpoint (point at one end or the starting
point) and extends infinitely in one direction.
A ray A

6. ASSESSMENT

Using the figure on the right, name the following:

1. What is the name of the box?
2. Name 3 collinear points.
3. Name 3 coplanar points.
4. Name the line. N
5. Name any two segments.
6. Give any 3 non-collinear points.
7. Give any 4 non-coplanar points. T
8. Name the 2 rays.
9. Give any plane name.
10.How many points are there.
.

IV. ASSIGNMENT

A. Review:
Draw and label each figure.
1. line XY on plane A
2. Three coplanar points P,Q and R
3. Line l containing points C and D but not point P.
