Tutorial 1sol

This document contains solutions to two thermodynamics problems involving an ideal Otto cycle engine. [1] For a compression ratio of 10.5, the thermal efficiency is 61% and the heat input rate is 148 kW to produce 90 kW of power. [2] For a compression ratio of 8, the thermal efficiency is 56.5% and the heat input rate is 141.7 kW to produce 80 kW of power from a 6-cylinder 3.2L engine operating at 2000 rpm.

Tutorial 1

1. An ideal Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 10.5. Using constant specific heats at room
temperature determine

a) the thermal efficiency of the cycle

b) the rate of heat input if the cycle produces 90kW of net power

Use that cp = 1.005 kJ/kg.K, cv = 0.718 kJ/kg·K, at room temperature

Solution:

a) The definition of cycle thermal efficiency reduces to

1 1
 th  1  1  0.6096  61.0%
r k 1 10.51.41
b)The rate of heat addition is then

 Wnet 90 kW
Qin    148 kW
 th 0.6096

2. A six-cylinder 3.2L spark ignition engine operating on the ideal Otto cycle takes in air at
100kPa and 20C. The compression ratio in the engine is 8. When operating at 2000rpm,
this engine produces 80kW output power. Determine the rate of heat addition to the
engine.

Assume constant specific heats for air. Use cp = 1.005 kJ/kg.K, cv = 0.718 kJ/kg·K, k=1.4 at
room temperature.
Solution:

1 1
 th  1   1  0.6096  56.5%
r k 1 8 1.41
The rate of heat addition is then

 Wnet 80 kW
Qin    141.7 kW
 th 0.565
