Effectiveness of Liquid Oxygen Bleach
1. Experiment→ The effectiveness of liquid oxygen bleach, on stained
fabrics, at differing temperatures.
2. Hypothesis→ If the water temperature is higher, the bleach will be more
effective at removing stains from a fabric.
3. Variables
Independent Controlled Dependent
Temperature Amount of Bleach Effectiveness of
bleach
Amount of solvent
Amount of fabrics
4. Materials Required
1. Fabric (12 samples)
2. 600 mL bleach (bleach to water is to be combined in a 1:3 ratio with
bleach being 50 mL per beaker)
3. 1800 mL water (each of the 12 beakers will have 150 mL of water)
4. 1L beaker
5. 250 mL measuring cylinder
6. (4x) 500 mL beaker
7. Matches
8. Bunsen Burner
9. Data Logger Pro
10. Tongs
11. Tweezers
12. String (90 cm)
13. Ruler
14. Distilled water for washing equipment (sufficient amount)
15. 3x Tripods
16. Heat-proof mat
17. Staining substance (green cordial)
18. Scissors
19. 9x Pegs
20. Camera device (to obtain photographs for the experiment).
21. 1x Zip-lock bag
5. Factors that may not be able to be controlled
I. Bleach may be expired
II. Human error
III. Faulty equipment
IV. Fabric deterioration
6. Procedure
1. Cut the fabrics (as accurately as possible) to the proposed
dimensions of 9 x 9 cm.
2. Place fabrics onto a hard surface.
3. Cut 90 cm of string and tie it between two secure posts.
4. Stain the fabric pieces with one drop of the stain material.
5. Hang the fabric on the string to dry for an amount of time
specified by teacher.
6. Place individually stained and dried fabrics into zip-lock bag
(provided by teacher).
7. Set the bag aside for later use.

8. Gather all materials required to set up the Bunsen Burner.
9. Clean equipment thoroughly using distilled water.
10. Set up the equipment (Appendix 1).
11. Heat up 450 mL of water to 25 degrees Celsius.
12. Pour 150 mL of this water into 3 individual beakers.
13. Confirm the temperature with the Data Logger Pro.
14. Carefully measure out 50 mL of bleach and pour into the solution.
15. Place a sample of the stained fabric into each solution.
16. Let the fabric soak for no more than ten minutes.
17. Observe and record phenomena that occur at 3-minute, 6-minute
and 10-minute mark.
18. Average out the results so as to minimize error percentage and
variation between the results.
19. Carefully remove the fabric from the solution.
20. Hang the fabrics on the string and let dry for some time.
21. Observe and record if the stain has been removed by the bleach.
22. Repeat steps 11-21 but heat up the water to 50 degrees Celsius.
23. Repeat steps 11-21 but heat up the water to 75 degrees Celsius.
24. Observe and record which after temperature was the most
effective at removing the stain and on which fabric material the
bleach was most effective in removing the stain.
25. Obtain and record the results in a table.
