1 CRITICAL FACTORS
1.1 Prior to working, condition surrounding must be made safe as appropriate. All
activities shall be in compliance with the safe systems of work in operation at the work
location.
1.2 The contractor shall also be responsible for ensuring that all requirements for
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are met by all personnel, and in addition any
other regulations, such as those governing Occupational Exposure Limits, are also
met.
1.3 All surface preparation, application and inspection shall be carried out within the
prescribed Health and Safety framework of the installation at which such work takes
place.
1.4 Depending on height, the tank will require scaffolding to be erected to allow
access for application to the highest point. Height more than 1,5 meters will
need a full scaffold staging.
1.5 Prior to surface preparation, the surfaces shall be free from oil, grease and other
contamination.
1.6 Sufficient time must be available to carry out initial cleaning, surface preparation,
application and final curing of the applied Belzona® Product.
1.7 The same material properties of patching plate must be selected to avoid
galvanic effect with material substrate of tank and can withstand working
pressure.
2 SURFACE PREPARATION
Correct surface preparation is critical to the success of the application
2.1 Any surface defects such as leak or pinholes, should be addressed accordingly.
2.2 Where liquids are flowing from damaged areas, efforts must be made to steam the
flow by caulking or peening joints, seams and porous welds, an alternative method of
temporarily staunching the flow of liquid is to mix an appropriate fast curing grade of
Belzona® 1291 ES Metal, when semi cured, force it into the damaged area and hold
until the Belzona® 1291 becomes dimensionally stable.
2.3 Mixing shall be carried out in accordance with the Instructions for Use for Belzona®
1291.

2.4 Apply Belzona® 1291 to pinhole leak areas, forming a peak towards the center,
pushing this material well into the prepared profile by hand to have a pressure, than
allow to full cure approximately 1 hour.
2.5 It should by now be obvious that wherever possible grit blasting should be
recommended as a preferred method of surface preparation. However there are
certain application where it must be MANDATORY if the application is to be
successful in the long term.
2.6 Roughen all the repaired area, preparation should also be carried out on the
underside of any metallic plates or patches.

2.7 With regard of limited area application, safety and environment issues, thoroughly
abrade and roughen the entire area repair by power tools such as MBX, metal blaster
system to produce surface profile recommendation.

2.9 Wire brushes should never be used as a means of surface preparation for any
metallic surface. Their function is one of cleaning away surface contamination prior to
the preparation process.
Note: Roughen the area in the best manner possible, bearing in mind the vessel contents and
any restriction with regard to the use of mechanical tools. As a general rule, the less
effective the preparation the larger the prepare area should be, thus extending the
bond area in order to composite for lack of surface profile.
2.10 Remove all spent abrasive dust, and contamination using suitable equipment.
2.11 Wash down with Belzona® 9111 Cleaner/ Degreaser with stiff brittle brush or clean
rags to remove deposit contamination. Oil and chemical contamination must be
thoroughly remove using of Belzona® 9111 on localized contamination
2.12 It is essential that the coating should commence immediately after preparation to
minimize the possibilities of surface contamination or oxidations.
3 APPLICATION
3.1 Put on masking tape shall be used to leave a neat application and ensure that
application remains within the preparation boundary.

4 INSPECTION
4.1 Following completion of coating application the coating shall be allowed to cure for the
minimum time stated in the manufacturer's instructions for use prior to the conductor
being entered for leak testing.
4.2 Once the application is completed and the coating has hardened, carry out a through
inspection to confirm repair integrity. Hydro test the Tank is suitable method.
