1
Achieve and maintain
physical fitness – get loads of
sleep, eat good natural foods,
be fully hydrated drinking
pure water. Be active and do
regular exercise.

Feel good about yourself!
A higher, or even nervous voice
could be a sign of a lack of self-
confidence, or a reaction to some
bad things in your past. You have
a right to be here. Know that most
people genuinely want to hear
what you have to say and will give
you time to talk.

3
Yawn, even if you’re not tired.
Yawn, and yawn again, and
stretch for good measure.
Do this to relax the neck
muscles and the vocal cords.
Relaxation is the key to a
good, deep, mature voice
quality.

4
Believe in what you are talking
about. Totally feel passionate
about every word you say.
Strangely when you believe
deeply about something, your
voice sounds deeper too.
Convince yourself: you speak the
truth.
You ARE the truth. The truth is
YOU.

The depth of anyone’s voice is
down to the thickness of the vocal

5
cords and the size and shape of
their body, but you can enhance
the richness and depth of your
voice by simple exercises. Hum
or chant low, very low, while
relaxing and standing, not sitting.
Don’t crush the diaphragm, don’t
strain your voice; simply take in
deep breaths and hum
comfortably, 10 minutes a day
minimum.

If you find doing anything low a

6
problem, you may have tension issues.
So, pretend you’re in an extremely
tense situation, say on stage or a live TV
show. Really imagine it! Now, identify
the muscles that are tense, in your neck
area, your throat and shoulders.
Actively pinpoint these areas and relax
them. Once you have relaxed them
fully, and you can test this by humming
low….create a “mental pre-set” for this
condition. Teach yourself to easily and
quickly “snap” into this relaxed pre-set
on will.

As well as being generally
physically fit, you need a good

7
volume of air to speak, and it
needs to be strong and long
lasting too. Exercise your
diaphragm by blowing out
sharply for about 30 times. Then
relax and do this again later in the
day. It’s a good exercise to
strengthen your abdominal
muscles and your diaphragm
which will assist greatly your
ability to achieve a rich low voice.

Close your mouth and suck on an
invisible straw. Hold for about 5
seconds then release. This
strengthens all important muscle
groups in your throat. Don’t do
this too much or you may get
dizzy.

9
Learn to use all your chest cavities
to gain resonance. Don’t speak
from the throat. Relax your throat
muscles and learn to identify how
by doing this you use the deep
chest cavities to resonate your
voice. You can check this by low
humming and putting your hand
on your upper chest. Can you feel
the vibrations?

Finally, if you have any serious
issues that none of these tips can
tackle, find a good speech
therapist or voice coach who may
find physical or psychological
elements that may be affecting
your voice.
Good luck!
