Crow Pheasant (Centropus Sinensis)
Called ‘Mahoka’ in Hindi, Crow Pheasant or Coucal stands at the height of 48 cms. It’s a clumsy,
glossy black bird with conspicuous wings and long, broad, black, graduated tail. One can easily
identify it by its deep, resonant coop-coop-coop in the series of six, seven or even twenty.
Sometimes two birds synchronize their call and the entire jungle lightens up with their
orchestrated performance. When (probably) not in ‘mood’ the bird also utters a variety of harsh
croaks and gurgling chuckles. It affects open forests, grassland interspersed with shrubs where its
possible for it to stalk and hide. It can also be seen in villages. It loves to eat caterpillars, large
insects, snails, lizards, young mice and eggs of birds. Both the sexes are alike and can be seen
singly or in pairs.
¤ Easy Availability
The bird is found all over the Indian Union, Bangladesh,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. In the Himalayas it can be
found upto the height of 2000 meters. Nesting season is
from February to September and may vary locally. Its nest is
an untidy collection of twigs and branches where three or
four glossless eggs are laid.

If not given sufficient attention, parrots may become unfriendly and disobedient. In order to maintain their friendly
personalities and tameness, regular handling and socialisation are a must for these birds.Parrot is highly
intelligent and does make a good pet. They can be taught to speak, whistle, perform tricks (untying knots,
stringing beads), and mimic other sounds

Scientific name is Spilornis cheela. This bird is a scarce winter visitor. Found in wooded areas
near wetlands of Haryana. It is a dark brown bird similar to Black Kite, it has a white bar across
its tail visible in flight. Likes to perch on top of a tall tree to search for its prey. Its food
consists of frogs, mice, snakes and lizards. This bird is widespread throughout wooded country,
lowlands and lower hills of India. Crested Serpent Eagle pairs tend to be very territorial. They

The Black Kite
The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae,
which also includes many other diurnal raptors. Unlike others of the group, they are
opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend a lot of time soaring and
gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them
easy to identify. This kite is widely distributed through the temperate and tropical parts of
Eurasia and parts of Australasia, with the temperate region populations tending to be
migratory. Several subspecies are recognized and formerly with their own English names.
The European populations are small, but the South Asian population is very large
