What is a City?
According to Louis Wirth(1938 )a city has four
characteristics:
It is a permanent settlement
It has a large population size
It has a high population density
It has social heterogeneity
What is a human settlement?
The Vancouver Declaration (1976), it is the
totality of the human community with all the
social, material,organizational, spiritual and
cultural elements that sustain it.
Its physical elements are composed of:
-----Shelter: the structures built for the security,
privacy and protection of humans from the
elements
-----Infrastructure: refers to networks designed to move
people, goods and services from their origins to their
destinations
-----Services: usually refer to human requirements such
as energy, information, health and education facilities
Its non-physical elements: when it becomes a framework
for socio-economic development,sustainability
becomes an added quality, thus sustainable human
settlements can become a goal of dvelopment.
-----Efficiency and functionality
-----Indicator or measurement of societys ability to fufill
basic human rights
CITY CLASSIFICATION IN THE
PHILIPPINES
Chartered City: All cities in the Philippines are
chartered cities created by law with a distinct
corporate and administrative structure They are
governed by their own specific charters as well as
the Local Government Code of 1991
Highly Urbanized City: A city with a minimum
population of 200,000 inhabitants as certified by
the Natl Statistics Office and latest annual income
of 50 million pesos based on 1991 constant prices
as certified by the City Treasurer
Independent Component City: A city whose
charter prohibits its voters from voting for
provincial election officials. It is considered
independent from the province
Component City: A city which does not meet the
requirements of being an HUC or ICC. If a
component city is located within the boundaries
of two or more provinces, such a city shall be
considered a component of the province of which
it used to be a municipality
What is an urban area?
It is a spatial concentration of people working in
or performing non-agricultural activities
What is urbanization?
It is the process by which large numbers of
people become permanently concentrated in
relatively small areas.
It can be explained as a demographic
consequence of population growth,movement
and eventual distribution
In addition, it can be the result of changes in
the economic base of the labor force
Furthermore, technology also facilitates
urbanization. Globalization is said to be the
major factor for rapid urbanization in
developing economies.
What is urban sprawl?
It is the spread of low-density, car-dependent
development beyond the original city limits.
It brings about the growth of suburbia,
exurbia and the creation of new towns and
local government units
What is the urban fringe?
This refers to areas in the outskirts of urban
area that impinge or encroach on rural lands.
