Flowchart for Process of Laundry 2
Abstract
Laundry is one of the tasks in the home that takes more time, because require a process to
have it done. A process can be defined as a set of activities, actions or decisions interrelated,
characterized by inputs and outputs, geared to a specific result as a consequence of the value
added by each of the activities carried out in different stages of that process (Fernandez, 2003).
A process can be visualized with a flowchart. This flowchart is a valuable tool because
represents the systematic flow of logic to all the involved members in effective manner. It can
also be referred repeatedly to understand the system as documentation allows keeping the
blueprint of design for analysis in the development of system.
I will present the factors that affect the process chose to improve, the steps involved, the
metric that will be used to measure and a flowchart that will help me to understand and think in
which task the process can be improved. Doing a laundry process in less time can help me in
accomplishing more task in a day.
Factors that affect the Process Design
Right temperature, quality of cloths and adequate water in the tub are the factors that
affect the process of design in laundering. It acts, as decisive factor is execution of steps.
Following are the steps involved in laundering the cloths:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Sort the cloths for white, bright and dark colors.
Check the pockets of sorted cloths and empty it.
Read the product label to follow the instructions.
Measure the right amount of detergent.
Pour the detergent into washer.
If liquid fabric softener is required, add it else go to step 7.
Choose the water temperature as per instruction of washing machine instruction.

8. If cloths are sensitive to temperature, then go to step 9 else go to step 12.
9. Select cold water.
10. If cloths are durable fabrics like cotton, then go to step 11 else go to step 12.
11. Select hot water.
12. Choose the laundry cycle.
13. If it is delicate fabrics, then go to step 14 else go to step 15.
14. Select gentle cycle.
15. Select Regular cycle.
16. Adjust the water level as per load.
17. Upload the cloth in the machine, close the lid and start the machine.
18. Wait for 45 minutes.
19. Put the cloths in dryer.
20. Close the lid and start the dryer.
21. Wait for 60 or more minutes.
22. Take the dry cloths out.
Start and end steps are represented as oval shapes. I have used the rectangles for processing
steps. Decision steps are shown by diamond shape. Arrow symbol is used for showing the flow
of process.
I will use the sorting time for cloths as metric because they are critical in reducing the
laundry time. Other steps are automatic in general.

END
Quick-sorter for putting the cloths in different type of bins for washing can be used to
reduce the variation in sorting time and total time of sorting. I can label different bins for cloth of
heavy, normal or delicate nature and put the type of cloths in appropriate bin. In addition, if I
can make the mark on drawers to set aside the drawers for each type of cloths, then I can put the
cloths to same drawer every day like one for jeans, shirts, lingerie etc.
Sorting the cloth is a bottleneck. Therefore, I will do the sorting according to weather and
putting the right cloths in right place each day rather than doing the entire chore in one day.
Conclusion
Flowchart for Process of Laundry 5
The creation of a flowchart helped to visualize the process and to determine some
opportunities to improve. The flowchart give us an idea of how the process is being
administrated, however we need to observed the process and take the sorting time for a certain
amount of time to determine the effectiveness of the process.
