Washing Machine
Washing Machine
Which is the best economical and heavy duty washing machine suitable for my home is a
question that can easily stir up one’s mind, especially that of the ladies' because so many brands
make these machines these days. Also, what makes the buying decision even more difficult is the
availability of different types of washing machines among:- Fully automatic- Top loading,
Front loading and Semi automatic in almost every price range.
You would be glad to know that my father works at a company that manufactures home
appliances like geysers, washing machines, microwaves. So at home, we frequently have a
conversation about commercial appliances, what goes into making them, how brands try to do
cost cutting etc.
Today, I'll try my best to pass on the knowledge that I have acquired from my father over the
years, to you so as to help you make a good decision.
The Fully automatic washing machines contain a single motor which is capable of doing both
spinning as well as washing activities. These machines do all the work by themselves with no
manual intervention required. Fully automatic washing machines come in two configurations,
namely, front loading and top loading.
Agitators are devices which puts objects into motion, here clothes. They have a pole with fins
that protrudes from the bottom of the drum and moves the clothes around. (see the image above)
Impellers have propellers at the bottom, which churns the water to move the clothes. An
impeller is a low-profile rotating hub. The vanes of the impeller create turbulent currents in the
wash water as the impeller rotates, these currents move the clothes through the water and clean
them without the impeller making physical contact with the clothes.
PROS: You can add clothes midway through the wash cycle. They have a shorter wash cycle.
Top loaders are better for your back as the door is on the top of the machine, there’s less bending
needed to get your clothes in and out.
CONS: They use a lot of water. Those with agitators are rougher on clothes, while impellers are
good for delicate materials, but tend to tangle clothes.
PROS: These are the most energy- and water efficient and also wash the cleanest. Most of them
have a built-in heater to heat water. They have a large capacity — some front-loaders can fit as
many as 15 bed sheets in one load.
CONS: These washing machines are more expensive than the others and require a permanent
water connection and the pressure of the water has to be high. You cannot add clothes midway
through a cycle. Front loaders are heavy and cannot be moved easily.
Semi Automatic
These are the entry-level washing machines and have two tubs, one for washing and the other for
drying. So you need to keep shifting the clothes. You have to add the water to the tub before
washing your clothes, and then will have to drain it when the cycle is finished.
PROS: These don't need a permanent water connection and also use less water than the fully
automatic ones. You can also closely regulate the wash cycle in this type of washing machine,
which ensures that you don’t end up using more power than required. They are also the cheapest
and usually cost Rs 5,500-12,000.
CONS: These machines require manual intervention. They are also bigger in size and need
more space, though they have wheels for mobility. Only Top loading feature exists, no front
loading.
Personally, I would rather suggest you to not go for the semi-automatic one, as the manual
intervention and labor required in these machines outweigh their lesser cost. At my home I have
a Top Loading washing machine and it has been doing its job perfectly fine since the past 4
years, I just once had to get its top door replaced as my younger sister had put a steel bucket full
of dirty clothes soaked in water on the top door which lead the door to succumb to its injuries.
Apart from that everything is good with the washing machine.
Having said that, I would like to zero down on just a few products, each of Front Loading and
Top Loading, that offer the most bang for the buck, here they are:-
For Canadian citizens:- The Best Choice, Good Choice 1, Good Choice 2 and Good Choice 3
For Canadian citizens:- The Best Choice, Good Choice 1 and Good Choice 2

Hi Kabir.
Since you are interested in knowing the benefits and he shortcomings of
that machine, I'll mention them here for you.
Pros:-
Reputed brand. You get two years of warranty on the machine. Plus,
considering the service centers the brand has in most cities, getting a
technician to repair the product, if required, won't be an issue at all.
Cons:-
Water requirement. This, I have mentioned in the post as well and applies
to all top loading washing machines. If you have fixed timings of water
available at your home, then, there might be an issue. But, most washing
machines, except the semi automatic ones rely on large quantities of water
to give a good wash to the clothes.
Apart from that, I don’t feel there is any shortcoming of this machine, as
such.
Just be a little gentle with the wash settings when Khadi clothes need to be
washed.
Good Luck.

Hi.
Both the products are neck to neck when it comes to their load capacity,
their spin speed, their power. Both the products are manufactured by
reputed brands.
Hence, your bet on either of the products will turn very fruitful for you.
Good Luck.

The reason for mentioning Bosch after LG is not that Bosch is inferior to LG by any
means, but because it is more cost friendly to the end user in the long run, especially in
terms of after sales services and cost of repairs and replacement of parts. Additionally,
you can find multiple service centers of LG in every major city of the country, so getting
ready availability of a technician isn't a hassle.
However, if you are fine with paying a little extra for the Bosch or the IFB one, if that
gives you mental satisfaction, you are still a winner by having a great purchase in hand.
Good Luck.

HI. Thank you so much for such a detailed and insightful post. What’s your view on
Whirlpool 360 degrees bloom wash in the top load category as against LG or Samsung
considering the fact that it comes with the feature of a built in heater at this price point.

Hi Nimish.
The Whirlpool Bloom Wash is indeed a strong contender against the LG
washing machines and with the added functionality of inbuilt heater, it
becomes all the way more impressive.
Most of the qualities of this product are good except for three, namely:-
3) Lesser warranty period- This product comes with two year warranty on
the product whereas the similarly priced Samsung one:-
http://fkrt.it/XZJn1KNNNN
The above one, particularly, offers a three year warranty period. Warranty
period is one factor of any product which, the higher is the better.
All in all, I would say, the Whirlpool Bloom Wash is a decent product with
many strengths and some minor flaws. If you can cater to flaws, this
product will serve you extremely well for the years to come.
Good Luck.

Hi Sir,
I am planning to buy a top load automatic washing machine but currently i am pretty
confused within the brands. Currently i have finalized to go with one among the below
brands
1.IFB - For its reputation in manufacturing of quality product
2.LG - The latest inverter machine offer 10 year motor warranty though heard about few
negative reviews on the machine
3.Whirlpool - the one we are using now, it was up and running for the last 6 years
About the requirement :- we are family of 4, no problem with water and looking for 6.5
KG machine with best price.
Hello.
All three of these are very reputed brands and are pioneers when it comes
to manufacturing consumer electronics.

Dear Sir,
I have few basic questions in this regard, would be very helpful if you could shed light on
these...
Hi Siddharth.
I understand your need to be confident about your purchase and thus I
would certainly help you out in this.
1) In terms of noise and vibration, IFB washing machines are a little better
than the similarly priced LG ones. IFB is a brand that pays great attention
to the NVH levels of all the products they manufacture. However, in real
world usage, the difference between the two is not much pronounced.
2) In terms of safety of clothes, both are at par. Both these brands ensure
that your clothes remain in 'brand-new' condition for a long time. In fact,
front load washing machines are better than both fully and semi-automatic
top loading washing machines when it comes to being gentle on clothes
and retaining their quality.
4) In terms of after sales service, both cost and the quality of service, LG
beats IFB by great margin. This is one of the most important reasons as to
why LG outsells IFB in number of units sold. Almost all cities in India
have at least one LG authorized service center, which can not be said about
IFB. You place a call to the LG service center and within the next 24 hours
the technician will be at your doorstep.
7) Vario drum feature gives a gentle wash to the clothes so that its quality
is retained for long. However, front loading washing machines inherently
are gentle on the clothes. Therefore, there would not be any significant
difference between the washing machines that have the Vario drum
technology and the ones that do not.
10) No, higher spin speed does not spoil the clothes, nor does the quality of
clothes get degraded faster. Higher spin speed lets in more air to dry the
clothes. Therefore, high spin speed ensures that after the wash, your clothes
dry out faster.
Having said that, the front loading washing machines that offer the best
value for money are:-
http://fkrt.it/PhfIbLuuuN
https://amzn.to/2H1ToQ9
http://fkrt.it/PAeqhLuuuN
Currently, these are the better washing machines that offer a decent
combination of reasonable price and provide all the necessary features
without being harsh on clothes.
Among these, if I were to pick one for myself, I would have gone with the
third one and hence that is my recommendation to you too.
Good Luck.

Hello.
Whirlpool has done a commendable job with the World series range of
washing machines. I particularly find these washing machines to be one of
the better ones in the top loading department when it comes to the spin
speed of the motor which ensures lower drying times, the build quality and
the variety of wash programs that this machine offers for every type of
fabric.
However, one thing that I would like to mention here is, one can buy a
front loading washing machine in the price of this washing machine. The
front loading washing machines have several advantages over the top
loading ones.
Keeping this into perspective, I would recommend that you keep these
washing machines into consideration as well. Since, these washing
machines offer several advantages over the top loading ones:-

http://fkrt.it/0YBKC2NNNN
https://amzn.to/2EYkx0m
In my opinion, the second washing machine among these makes for a good
overall purchase in your mentioned budget and would give you several
benefits over the top loading ones, including gentler wash and lesser
energy consumption.
Good Luck.

Hi Sir,
I have been using top load automatic LG machine for the past 6 yrs. It stopped working
today and when I called the LG service the guy said its due to uneven loading of the
machine that drum nd suspension is affected and I would have to replace them, I want to
understand what this uneven loading is and does the same effect happen in font load
where there are no impellers? What capacity would you recommend for a family of five.
Last question since the water pressure keeps varying in my place what would you suggest
a front loading or top loading, Thank you for all your detailed explanations.

Hi Anuradha.
Secondly, what the technician might have meant by saying 'uneven' loading
is that the drum was tilted by a certain angle and have been continually
running in that position. This might have occurred because the components
that keep the drum in level position might have worn out or got broken.
What he also could have meant by 'uneven' loading is that the drum of the
washing machine was being frequently loaded with clothes beyond its
appropriate load taking capacity, therefore the suspension and the drum
have got damaged.
If you have water issues at home, I would recommend that you go with a
Front Loading washing machine since the top loading ones require much
more water, typically twice that of the front loading ones.
For a family of five individuals, the washing machines that would best
cater to the requirements are:-
http://fkrt.it/jQeNMLuuuN
http://fkrt.it/jtIu6LuuuN
https://amzn.to/2r1KXcK
These three washing machines are currently the better ones in the market in
terms of cost effectiveness. The quality of material used in these washing
machines are quite durable and would not give you much hassle for at least
9 to 10 years, if regularly serviced. Hence, I recommend these to you.
Good Luck.

Hi Agrawal.
Coming straight to your queries,
RPM of the drum is the measure of how fast it can spin at the end of the
wash cycle to dry out the washed clothes.
Most of the times, 800 RPM would be sufficient for most clothes. It is only
when thick fabric like that of jeans is to be dried out or when high quantity
of clothes are washed, the 800 RPM spin motor falls a little short.
Now, coming to the capacity of the washing machine you should opt for,
See, there is not much difference between the 6 Kg and 6.5 Kg washing
machine in terms of the quantity of clothes you can load into the drum.
As a matter of fact, if you are a family of three to four individuals, a 6 Kg
washing machine is sufficient to cater to all your family needs. In such a
scenario, an extra 0.5 Kg capacity would not make much of a difference.
However, if there are more than four individuals in the family, I would
advise to consider 7 Kg upwards capacity.
6 Kg washing machine

7 Kg washing machine
https://amzn.to/2rEnwX3
In my honest opinion, these two washing machines are one of the better
ones in their respective loading capacities. Moreover, the build quality and
washing prowess of these machines ensure that one has a solid product in
hand which would serve one well for the years to come.
Good Luck.

Hi Vibhor,
I am bit confused and could not make a decision on which one to buy-top load or front
load ? Since you have been using top load one yourself- do you think its worthwhile to
purchase a front load one -I mean all those fancy benefits /jarsons really worth it ? or
Would I be better off purchasing top load one ? From the post and discussions -I read ..I
understand LG is the best brand keeping in minf after sales services and cost of parts
..Please guide me .I am newly married and need to make a descision soon..

Hello Arihant.
On the other hand, top loading washing machines have their own strengths
too.
Top loading washing machines are generally a lot cheaper than the front
loading ones. On an average, the price difference comes out to be between
Rs. 8-12 thousand bucks, considering similar specifications of both.
Other very important advantage is their better loading position, which is
from the top. Therefore, doing laundry becomes a little easier in front
loading washing machines as compared to the front loading ones.
In my opinion, if you tend to keep your clothes for longer than 6 washes, a
front loading washing machine would help preserve the material of the
cloth. On the other hand, if initial cost is a priority, you can safely go with
a top loading one.

Hi.
Electrolux is a decent brand when it comes to manufacturing washing
machines. Some of their products are quite impressive as far as quality is
concerned. However, when it comes to cost and availability of after-sales
service, the brand under-performs. The cost of spare parts of Electrolux
washing machines are relatively costlier than its competitors, partly due to
the fact that the brand does not witness as much sales as market leading
brands like IFB, LG or Samsung does. Therefore, to maximize the profits,
the brand relies on after-sales service and spare parts.
Good Luck.
