OBAMA: Our immigration system is broken.

Obama announces his 2014 executive action

Slow piano music starts.

OBAMA: Families who enter our country the Fades to Obamas announcement speech for

right way and play by the rules watch others
flout the rules. Business owners who offer
their workers good wages and benefits see the
competition exploit undocumented
immigrants by paying them far less. All of us
take offense at anyone who reaps the rewards
of living in America without taking on the
responsibilities of living in America. And
undocumented immigrants who desperately
want to embrace those responsibilities see
little option but to remain in the shadows or
risk their families being torn apart.
Bernie Sanders speaking at a campaign forum
SANDERS: Mothers are worried about their
children. Children are worried about their
fathers. That is not what America should be
about.
OBAMA: Its been this way for decades. And
for decades, we havent done much about it.
EDUARDO talks about why and how he
came to the U.S.

million undocumented immigrants living in
the United States.
Many of them have suffered hardships to
come to this country to find a better life for
themselves and their families.

MR. PRICE: By and large the most common

reason would be that people would like to
raise their families in peace. Many people
come from countries where there is civil war
or the standard of living isnt what they
would like to raise their family in so they are
looking for options and many of them find
their options in coming to the United States.

VO: According to the Pew Research Center,
8.1 million undocumented immigrants make
up 5.1% of the total U.S. workforce.
According to the Social Security
Administration, as a whole, they contribute
$15 billion a year to Social Security. And
over the years, they have contributed $300
billion to the Social Security Trust Fund, an
estimated 11%.
However, the vast majority of them will not
be able to use a single penny of the fund, on
account of their unauthorized status.

The next President needs to work with
Congress to put together a bill that will
provide a path to legal status for the 11
million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
In 2013, the bipartisan Border Security,
Economic Opportunity, and Immigration
Modernization Act was introduced into the
Senate by the bipartisan Gang of Eight.
RUBIO specifying what the bill does.
VO: It easily passed the Senate with a twothirds majority. However, the House
leadership never allowed it to be considered
in the House.
Daryl Price: Many people have been here
undocumented for years and years and years.

Introduction
How will you CLEARLY introduce your topic? (montage? interview clips? VO?)

President Obamas announcement speech intro for his November 20, 2014 executive
action on illegal immigration & Bernie Sanders at a campaign forum.
How will you hook your audience? Why is this an important topic for people to
know about?
Eduardo talking about all the bad things that drove him to leave El Salvador for the U.S.
Connect to the StudentCam theme: ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE -Whats the issue YOU most want candidates to discuss during the 2016 presidential
campaign?
Will narration be VOs or will narrator appear on film?
VOs limited to bare necessities.
What compelling facts from your research can you use in your introduction?
8.1 million of them make up 5.1% of the total U.S. labor force (so theyre
either working or actively looking for work) -- 5 facts about illegal immigration -Pew Research Center
Start your sequence of events with an inciting incident that starts off the story and
leads and flows into the next part, or main idea #1.
Eduardo talking about all the bad things that drove him to leave El Salvador for the U.S.
How will you transition into your first main idea?
Illegal immigrants are here to escape hardships in their mother countries. They are here to
make a better life for themselves. The life they ran away from was often full of violence,
danger and poverty.
Second main idea:
Undocumented immigrants contribute so much money into the federal and state tax
system yet are denied basic public benefits such as food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, and
federal aid for college.

Good sources:
1. Do Illegal Immigrants Actually Hurt the U.S. Economy? -- The New York
Times Magazine
a. Stephen Goss, chief actuary for the Social Security Administration,
told me that undocumented workers contribute about $15 billion a year to Social
Security through payroll taxes. They only take out $1 billion (very few
undocumented workers are eligible to receive benefits). Over the years,
undocumented workers have contributed up to $300 billion, or nearly 10 percent,
of the $2.7 trillion Social Security Trust Fund.

Security Administration
3. Another source from VICE
4. Top 10 myths about immigration as a whole (including legal immigrants) -American Immigration Council
a. So many people are immigrating to the U.S. illegally because there
are insufficient legal avenues for them to enter legally. Illegal immigrants are
not stealing jobs from Americans.
b. According to data taken from a 2002 U.S. Census Bureau report,
Similar to accusations about today's immigrants, those of 100 years ago initially
often settled in mono-ethnic neighborhoods, spoke their native languages, and
built up newspapers and businesses that catered to their fellow migrs. They also
experienced the same types of discrimination that today's immigrants face, and
integrated within American culture at a similar rate. If we view history
objectively, we remember that every new wave of immigrants has been met with
suspicion and doubt and yet, ultimately, every past wave of immigrants has been
vindicated and saluted.
c. Of the estimated 25% of immigrants who are undocumented, 40%
overstayed temporary (non-immigrant) visas. Thats 10% of total immigrants who
overstayed their visas.
