Information Resources for Nuclear Medicine
Rajeev Vij & Ravi Kashyap
Division of Nuclear Medicine & Medical Informatics,
Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences, Delhi
Providing doctors, scientists, technicians and researchers, timely access to information can enhance their
ability for decision-making. The Internet is a potential means of enhancing such interactions. An information
site on the Web has enormous potential as a medium for the specialist in Nuclear Medicine to retrieve information
in the form of text, images, and video clips.
This paper provides a brief overview of several reliable Internet resources concerning Nuclear Medicine.
Resources for Nuclear Medicine on the Internet include search engines, medical sources, advocacy sources,
U.S. government sources, personal Web sites, public library databases, and commercial databases. Many helpful
Internet resources have been identified on the basis of quality criteria, their relevance and the language availability.
The paper includes four topic areas, the first provides a brief description of Nuclear Medicine, the second
focuses on printed resources, the third provides a description of journal resources on the net and the last is a
short overview of some databases available on the Web. With a modest amount of tutoring and effort required
for information retrieval from net, one can expeditiously get the right information at the right time.
1. Nuclear Medicine
The seeds of one of medicines younger disciplines,
Nuclear Medicine were sown close to a century ago. The
pioneering work of Marie and Pierre Curie in uncovering
substances with hitherto unrecognized properties, for which
they coined the term, radioactive, opened up a new field of
opportunity.
This is a branch of medicine that uses radiation to provide
information about the functioning of a persons specific organs
or to treat disease. In most cases, physicians need information
to make a quick, accurate diagnosis of the patients illness.
The thyroid, bones, heart, liver and many other organs can be
easily imaged, and disorders in their function revealed. In
some cases radiation can be used to treat diseased organs, or
tumors. In developed countries (26% of world population)
the frequency of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine is 1.9% per
year, and the frequency of therapy with radioisotopes is about
one tenth of this.
A more recent development in the field of Nuclear Medicine
is Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which is a more

precise, and sophisticated technique using isotopes produced
in a cyclotron. A positron-emitting radionuclide is introduced,
usually by injection, and accumulates in the target tissue. As
it decays it emits a positron, which promptly combines with a
nearby electron resulting in the simultaneous emission of two
identifiable gamma rays in opposite directions. These are
detected by a PET camera and give very precise indication of
their origin. PETs most important clinical role is in oncology,
with fluorine-18 as the tracer, since it has proven to be the
most accurate non-invasive method of detecting and
evaluating most cancers. It is also well used in cardiac and
brain imaging. New procedures combine PET with CT scans
to give co-registration of the two images, enabling 30% better
diagnosis than with traditional gamma camera alone.

7. Key Databases in Nuclear Medicine
A. MEDLINE (1966present) covers the worlds biomedical
and health sciences journal literature. Medline provides
authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing,
dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical
sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of
Medicine, MEDLINE allows users to search abstracts from over
4,600 current biomedical journals www.nlm.nih.gov.
B. PubMed (1966-present) includes: all data in the MEDLINE
database and all journal citations from HealthSTAR. Entrez
is the text-based search and retrieval system used at NCBI
for the major databases, including PubMed, Nucleotide and
Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes,
Taxonomy, and others. PubMed is particularly noted for the
currency of its information as well as the links to full-text
electronic journal www.ncbi.nlm.nil.gov.
C. CINAHL provides indexing for over 1,700 current nursing
and allied health journals and other publications dating back
to 1982, and contains over 961,000 records. It offers complete
coverage of English-language nursing journals and
publications from the National League for Nursing and the
American Nurses Association, Cinahl covers nursing,
biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, alternative
complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied
health disciplines www.cinahl.com.
D. EMBASE (1988 to present) is a medical database which
covers a wide range of journals in the biomedical sciences.
A subset of the EMBASE database, EMBASE: Radiology &
Nuclear Medicine from Elsevier Science includes only
information pertinent to the specialty of radiology and
Nuclear Medicine. This database covers information on
radiodiagnosis, radiotherapy, radiobiology, ultrasound
diagnosis, thermography, adverse reactions to radiotherapy,
and techniques and apparatus. EMBASE is particularly
useful for locating drug information, as it indexes many drug
journals not covered by MEDLINE www.embase.com.
Indian Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Vol. 20, No. 1, March 2005
E. Web of Science (1975 to present) It provides online access
to three citation databases: Art and Humanities Index : Science
Citation Index Expanded : Social Sciences Citation Index . The
entry for each article includes access to the references in its
bibliography, as well as to articles published later which list that
article in the bibliography www.isiknowledge.com.

9. Use of the Internet for Teaching
The Internet provides several new capabilities for education
in nuclear medicine, including learning at a distance, facilitation
of collaboration, increased availability of training resources,
and ability to develop interactive teaching materials. Dedicated
case-authoring software aided development of digital teaching
files at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and the Joint
Program in Nuclear Medicine. Accesses to these two teaching
files from sites around the world have grown rapidly.
Improvements in the speed of the Internet will allow inclusion
of more images at higher resolution and more extensive use of
cine. Development of server-based software will allow simulation
of the actual image-reading environment. A better
understanding of how to use this new media will spur continued
expansion in use of the Internet for nuclear medical education.
10. Conclusion
Libraries are the repositories for humanitys knowledge; they
are our past, our present, and our future. The information
available within the confines of a library must be accessible to
its users. The library in its present form is a product of the
printing press revolution. In this digital age the advent of Internet
have revolutionized information retrieval and dissemination.
Internet is a two way interpersonal communication flow. The
key distinguishing features of Internet are the interpersonal
feedback and interaction process in real time, which traditional
medium cannot provide. In India, NIC has initiated databases in
biomedical science consisting of over 77 Indian biomedical
journals. The bibliographical database (www.INDmed.nic.in)
and full text database (www.medIND.nic.in) are available on
free access.
The recent years have seen significant advances in both
molecular biology, allowing the identification of genes and
pathways related to disease, and imaging technologies that
allow for improved spatial and temporal resolution, enhanced
sensitivity, better depth penetration, improved image
processing, and beneficial combinations of different imaging
modalities.
Rapid advances in imaging technology are a challenge for
health care professionals, who must determine how best to use
these technologies to optimize patient care and outcomes.
Recently, integrated PET/CT systems have become available;
these systems provide PET and CT images that are acquired
nearly simultaneously and are capable of producing
superimposed, co-registered images, greatly facilitating
interpretation. The implementation of this integrated technology
has become more widespread in the setting of oncologic imaging
and proper information inputs becomes critical in optimal
utilization of nuclear medicine potentials.
