Low Expansion Foam Nozzles

Low expansion foam nozzles and sprinklers are designed to fight class A and B fires using foam and water. They can be used in foam extinguishing systems as well as sprinkler and water spray systems that have foam agent mixing capabilities. Appropriate applications include industrial facilities like recycling plants, refineries, storage of hazardous materials, and ships. When activated, the nozzles and sprinklers mix foam agent into pressurized water to create a low expansion foam spray or jet. For nozzles, the spray directly hits the fire, while sprinklers use a heat-activated bulb to disperse foam once a temperature threshold is reached.

Low Expansion Foam Nozzles

Foam/water nozzles, foam/water sprinklers

Foam/water nozzles and sprinklers are specially designed for fighting class A and B fires (burning solids and liquids) in volume protection and local application installations. In addition to installation in foam extinguishing systems they can also be used in sprinkler systems, water spray extinguishing systems and so-called semi-fixed extinguishing systems, provided that these are fitted with a device for the admixture of foaming agent. Suitable applications include recycling plants, refineries, storage facilities for hazardous substances, waste incineration plants, the chemicals industry, tank storage facilities, dockside facilities, tanker and container ships, offshore oil rigs, etc.

Function and structure

In the event of fire, foaming agent is added to the pressurised extinguishing water. A powerful jet of this mixture hits the deflector. By far the greater part of this pre-foamed and slowed down jet of foaming agent/water mixture is intercepted by the pierced metal baffle and turned into low expansion foam. The quantity of mixture directly diverted by the deflector blends with the low expansion foam on the surface that is to be protected and lubricates the carpet of foam as it builds up. After the supply of foaming agent is exhausted, the surface under protection continues to be sprayed with finely dispersed extinguishing water for cooling purposes.

Foam/water nozzle

Foam/water sprinkler

In the event of fire, the open foam/ water nozzles are immediately ready for action. When in a state of operational readiness, foam/water sprinklers, on the other hand, are sealed with a glass bulb which bursts, releasing the foam/water mixture, when a set temperature is reached.
