Traffic Sight Distance Guide

This document discusses different types of sight distances that must be provided on roads, including stopping sight distance, overtaking sight distance, and intermediate sight distance. It provides guidelines on which distances take precedence in different road contexts, such as overtaking sight distance being most important on two-lane roads. Formulas and tables are presented for calculating minimum stopping sight distances and overtaking sight distances based on design speeds. Criteria for measuring sight distances around vertical curves are also outlined.

IRC 73 - 1980
3 types of Sight Distances:
1. Stopping Sight Distance
2. Overtaking Sight Distance
3. Intermediate Sight Distance
4. Headlight Sight Distance

SIGHT DISTANCES:
APPLICATIONS

In decreasing order of
preference: Overtaking
Sight Distance >
Intermediate Sight
Distance > Safe
Stopping Distance.
In case of sloping
terrain, Headlight Sight
Distance.

Straight/ 2 Lane
Roads

Divided Highways

At least SSD
Twice the value
for operational
convenience

Undivided 4 Lane
Highways

Same as Divided
highways since
there are sufficient
opportunities for
overtaking within
half the carriageway.

SIGHT DISTANCES:
Criteria for Measurement

For Valley Curves

i.
Height of headlight above road surface is 0.75m
ii.
Useful beam of headlight is up to 1 upwards from grade
of road
iii.
Height of object is nil

STOPPING SIGHT
DISTANCE
Clear distance ahead needed by a driver to bring his
vehicle to stop before meeting a stationary object on his
path.
Equal to: Sum of
i.
ii.

Distance travelled during Perception-and-Reaction time

Braking distance

STOPPING SIGHT DISTANCE

based on design speeds

OVERTAKING SIGHT
DISTANCE
Minimum sight distance that should be available to a
driver on a 2-Way road to enable him to overtake another
vehicle safely.
Optimum Condition: Overtaking driver can follow the
vehicle ahead for a short time can pull out his vehicle
and overtake the other vehicle at design speed of the
highway return to his own side of the road BEFORE
meeting the oncoming vehicle from the opposite direction
travelling at the same speed.

OVERTAKING SIGHT
DISTANCE
based on design speeds

Considered for:

Time component of 9
14s for the actual
overtaking maneuver
depending on Design
Speed

Increased by 66.67% to
account for the distance
travelled by the vehicle
coming from the opposite
distance during the same
time.
