For my father, Dr Arvind Kumar Sharma, whose teachings have brought me one step closer to achieving my dreams and motivated me to write this book.
And for Yogesh, my husband, whose unconditional support has helped me throughout my writing journey.
Introduction
To begin with, I would like to extend my congratulations to all readers who have chosen to read my book with the intention of gaining a fresh perspective on sourcing, talent attraction, and the recruitment process. This book is intended for aspiring professionals who seek to learn the ins and outs of recruitment, or those who are interested in pursuing it as a career.
This book is a comprehensive guide that will guide you through each stage of the recruitment process, explaining them through practical, everyday examples. Through this book, I hope to shed light on the ways in which recruitment can transform not only your own life, but the lives of others as well.
As a recruiter, I have encountered many individuals who are unaware of the true scope and impact of the profession. By connecting job seekers with meaningful opportunities, recruiters not only contribute to the success of their organizations but also add value to the lives of others. Over time, I have come to realize that recruitment provides countless opportunities to connect with the best and brightest individuals from around the world, opening doors to new perspectives and valuable experiences.
Interestingly, this book will also show you that recruitment or talent acquisition is not only meant to be mastered by recruiters but it can be learned by everyone who has an interest in changing lives and making an impact by mentoring others in their career move.
At the end of every chapter, I have provided a checklist and some exercises and questions for self-assessment for you to review and answer to ensure that you have understood the main takeaways that I intended for you.

How Life Teaches Us Recruitment
I believe that everything you experience in life makes you a more learned person. Every moment, every hour, and every day you are learning something new, and learning becomes easier when you can relate it to real life.
I still remember the time when my father was looking for someone to join his startup in his early career. He was looking for someone who was a typing and photocopy expert, could open the shop, manage logistics and administrative activities, and could also manage finances in his absence. In a nutshell, he was looking for a full-stack professional, someone who could manage both front-end and back-end activities.
He issued advertisements inviting applications, conducted interviews through the applications, organized a walk-in event and asked his colleagues to share references. It took him around ten to fifteen days to find the right fit and that too through reference. When I look back at this thirty-year-old incident, I realize how, even without any formal knowledge of the recruitment process, he explored all possible aspects of it, be it walk-ins, job postings as an advertisement in a newspaper or referrals.
This made me understand how natural and intuitive the entire recruitment lifecycle is.
I believe that everything you experience in life makes you a more learned person. Every moment, every hour, and every day you are learning something new, and learning becomes easier when you can relate it with real life, and this is one of the biggest reasons why I love recruitment.
One of my aunts was an amazing sourcer; she learned how to use matrimonial sites to search for a groom for her daughter. She also learned all the ways of conducting advanced searches to get the desired lists of suitable matches for her daughter. I think matchmaking is nothing less than a domestic form of sourcing talent and finally making a permanent acquisition! People searching for perfect partners for their children or relatives become experts in conducting searches, marketing and describing the bio-data, which is as good as writing a job description.

A Software Engineer turned Recruitment Professional
Few things are meant to happen, and they create causes by themselves. I never thought that I would ever leave my cushy job till it
happened.
A selfie lover, a social media enthusiast, a traveller, a writer, a mother, and a poet at heart—I am Parul Sharma, a recruitment professional working with Viasat as a global talent attraction and sourcing leader for the past three years. I embarked on the dream of authoring a book through an interesting roller coaster ride.
Born in the heart of India, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, I pursued my schooling in a small town in UP before finally returning to Gwalior for my engineering degree in 2002. Those miraculous four years of my life helped me realize my potential and my strengths and brought me closer to my dream of being independent and well-placed in my profession.
My college days were filled with excitement, fun, and learning as I pursued a degree in electronics and communication. The year 2006 did not favour us in terms of on-campus placements.
After graduating with honours, I was exploring job opportunities when destiny smiled upon me. I received news that Infosys was conducting an off-campus drive, and I received an invitation to appear for the entrance exam. It felt like destiny was in play; my preparations helped me crack the exams and interviews. I was selected as a Software Engineer and was placed in Chandigarh. With enthusiasm, I embarked on a journey of learning Java and various other related languages
