A letter from the author
Hi there,
Welcome aboard the Career Crush
ship, where you can expect to land with ten times the growth you chart out for yourself!
Career Crush
is intended to serve as your guide in determining the best career path for you.
We all enter a stage in life where we cannot understand which road must be taken. Are we on the correct path? How do I decide? Will I be able to succeed with what I have chosen?
These questions keep coming to our mind whenever we reach a crossroad that requires decision-making. This book will help you answer some of these questions and will help you logically break down decisions, so that you can choose a path that will not leave you with regret later on!
Many people have asked me how I have achieved all that I have. This book builds on my own experiences, mistakes and learning to help you think better and make a decision for yourself. I hope this book will bring
enlightenment and motivation to you in the same way that I was motivated and enlightened while writing it!
All I have to say is,
"Listen to your heart, Think through, Analyse and
Then choose what you feel is correct for you!"
Always wishing you all the success you work towards and deserve,
DP Vishwakarma
Preface
Don’t be influenced by all ways of money-making methods!
I was not born into opportunity, I helped create it myself.
The idea of sharing my journey from working in a part-time sales role at the age of seventeen to heading a bootstrapped IT and Marketing firm with global clients came to me when client after client asked me, Why am I not able to make the right career choice?
And while I would sit them down and recount my own experiences, I wanted to create a template that could be used to assess one’s goals, resources and path. That was the only way I could scale my career mentorship advice from one-on-one personal consultations to something that can be read by a global audience in the comfort of their homes.
The principal motivation for me, career-wise, was to find my career crush
. While concepts such as ‘ikigai’ have had a bearing on my preliminary research, I wanted to contextualise this book so that even the average individual, someone who might have humble beginnings, will have the ability to dream big and make a mark professionally.
I did not have the right academic pedigree or tons of referrals, and I still wanted to break into the digital marketing industry – one where clients are very demanding about either experience or outstanding results. By nature, I was hard- working, but lacked the confidence to walk up to strangers and present my true potential. However, bit by bit, I overcame my stage fright and took part in almost every art, street painting, app/website idea presentation competition that came my way in college. Eventually, I built enough confidence to trust my abilities wholly, and to not walk the beaten path of college placements, but instead to start-up right after college. I created the right network, and fortunately, my group of freelance content creators, marketers, developers and skilled engineers came together and bootstrapped to create our own firm! Through dedicated brainstorming sessions, that often ran late into the night, we logically planned our career growth trajectory, both for the firm and for ourselves. We have reached a stage where we want to move to the next scale through IT and marketing automation and to possibly raise external funding. When I look back at what helped me achieve many of my goals, along with hard work, focus and networks, it was certainly the ability to think of my career in the right frameworks. And that is precisely what this book attempts to provide you with.
Another reason I believed in writing this book was the fact that I have successfully created a personal brand for myself. And I strongly believe that to be successful in securing the right career once you have figured out what it is, projection of your personal brand is of utmost importance. I have been featured in news and media publications, including podcasts and YouTube channels. I even have verified profiles as a content creator and influencer across social media channels, and hence have successfully used the principles of digital marketing in my own personal life as well. This has increased the number of word- of-mouth referrals, client leads, close friends, and network of professionals that I have been able to tap into, and has helped me reach personal and professional aspirations in record time. This book aims to remain true to its roots and hence is written to be immediately actionable and practical. I want to serve a diverse range of audiences, from friends from humble backgrounds and small villages in India’s interior to urban millennials in large cities. I have also talked about phasing one’s career so that this book is equally applicable to a fresh college graduate, as it is to a mid to senior-level executive. It also applies as much to a freelancer, as to someone who works in a large conglomerate. I have abstracted the principles to such an extent, that you will only be guided to think in the right way, and not be provided with prescriptive self-help mantras that many other books promise as magic pills!
This project has been a labour of love for over a year- and-a-half. The lockdown, owing to the COVID-19 crisis, gave me a huge productivity boost that allowed me to set apart time from my day job running a firm to write the manuscript for this book. I was also able to connect with many more clients seeking career advice, which broadened the scope of my frameworks and suggestions immensely. While I am an engineer by training, I worked closely with reputed media journalists, well-known authors, key business leaders of FMCG and e-commerce firms, start-ups, and even the local bakery store, to turbo-charge their online presence and become a career mentor to them. I have built on my experience as a career counsellor for over five years and have attempted to develop and share methods and frameworks that I have seen work repeatedly across clients.
Getting to the final edition of this book has taken tremendous effort, as I worked with a large team of editors, proofreaders and close friends, who combed through every chapter and tried to logically place them for ease of readability and to increase retention. Since English is not my first language, I spent a lot of time trying to find the right group of people who would not only wholly understand everything I wanted to offer, but also translate it into a simple form of writing that just about anyone would be able to understand.
The success of this book will lie in the fact that you, as a reader, flip through the pages effortlessly, bookmark important frameworks and keep coming back to them whenever you have an important life lesson to make. And all of this harks back to my childhood when what would bring me the greatest joy, was simply being able to be of help to as many people as I possibly could! Happy reading and all the luck to you in finding your career crush!

Why This Book?
An Introduction
Imagine a life where you are not only able to work passionately, but are also able to experience sheer joy after achieving critical milestones of success. Does this sound like an ideal scenario to you? If you don’t think this is possible, I’d like to invite you to join me on a little adventure. Why don’t we jump right in?
There are tons of reasons behind writing this book, but before I reveal them to you, I would like you to answer a few questions—
Are you happy with the career that you have chosen? Did you make a conscious choice?
Are you doing work you have always wanted to do?
Are you making enough money from your day-to-day work?
If the answer to every question here is "yes, then this book is not for you! But if the answer to any of the questions above is
no," then you are probably looking for a direction, a sign that all will be well one day. Making the right career choice and planning accordingly may seem tricky, but is actually quite simple, if done right. The answer to thinking right about making such decisions lies in this book.
All the turmoil of making the correct career choice begins right from when we are about to complete high school. It almost feels like falling into a pit where the eternal question stares back at us – "What do I choose next?"
And before you know it, your time to make that decision has already run out.
No matter what stage of career you are in, there will always be something that will make you feel like you are missing out, and there must be moments where you end up having no idea about how to come out of that situation. Well, the good news is that it is very typical to feel that way. But what’s more important here is to understand why we feel like this?
Let’s attempt to decode it. The Indian education system is still evolving. As a result, there are multiple drawbacks. For example,
