For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings…until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.

Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.

But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game — and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy...

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a good read overall. The narration is enjoyable and the story is entertaining. The characters, especially Jacks, are well-liked. While some readers recommend reading the Caraval trilogy first, it's not necessary. The pacing and story development are strongest in the last third of the book. There is a sense of addiction and anticipation for the next installment. However, there are a few negative reviews mentioning confusion, rushed parts, and a disappointing main character. Despite these criticisms, readers are excited for the next book in the series.

I do not get it at all. How is this cute or enchanting? The plot is a mess and the main love story ridiculous. The heroine doesn't have one working brain cell it appears. Torture!

This book is an amalgam of all the fantasy books I've read this past few years. It's hard to judge where the story will go in the rest of the series but I guess it's going to be an enemies to lovers.
It reminded me of The invisible life of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and the Sorcery of thrones in particular...

2.5/5⭐️ Unfortunately, this book was rather disappointing. The premise was great but the delivery fell flat. The main character got on my nerves. She’s stubborn, naive and more than a bit fickle.

Great read, but I would make sure you have read the Caraval series before reading this book. While I enjoyed the read, it left me feeling a little confused and dissatisfied. But I'm curious to see what the next books hold. Great characters introduced and I like that while the theme of the story is romance, it isn't overly done and the magic is beautiful. But the overall layout of the north wasn't described well and was a little confusing, and some parts of the story felt rushed. But overall I enjoyed it.

The narration was good. The story was entertaining. I think its target demographic of teen- new adult will really enjoy Once Upon A Broken Heart. I wanted alot more from this story but am optimistic that I'll get it in the next installment. Jacks is a fantastic character, my favorite by far. I would recommend reading the Caraval trilogy first but it's not a must. The love interests in this novel happen so fast that they don't feel genuine but that starts to change toward the end of the book. The pacing and story development are best during the last third. I definitely plan to read any follow ups to OUABH as I walked away feeling like I needed more.

Good book, the end was a clifhanger and ot took a little bit for the plot to move forward, but over all really good , you can see her writing style has improved quite a lot since the caraval book, it is very whymsical and the romance seems to be a very slow burn.
I am looking forward to book number 2.

I'll say it I didn't care for Caraval. ??‍♀️ Jacks was the only thing I liked and seeing that he was a main in this I had to do it and I absolutely loved this (rolled my eyes when Scarlett and her sister show up for that little second) but I absolutely adored it.

I might do a more indepth review but I imagine everyone is right now so I'm leave it at I loved it.

A reading I recommend for those who love fantasy and classic tales.

This story could have perfectly fit into a series like Once Upon a Time. It has a very Disney-like magic, very much like a fairy tale, so I found it to be a charming read, although it is also true that towards the end it becomes a bit more peculiar.

It has very well-developed protagonists. One of them, by the way, appears in the author's previous trilogy, Caraval, which I didn't finish, so I might have spoiled some parts. Evangeline Fox struck me as a protagonist with a very good development throughout the novel, as I didn't fully connect with her at first.

In conclusion, a very entertaining and endearing book, with a lot of magic and very good elements that work perfectly together. It is the first of a trilogy, something that put me off because I thought it was a standalone and it's not, and right now I don't want to get attached to stories longer than one book. Evangeline urgently turns to the Prince of Hearts. The love of her life, Luc, is marrying her stepsister (no, it’s not a spoiler, this is known from the first chapter). Evangeline is completely sure that she is under a spell, and she is willing to do anything to stop the wedding. But this girl doesn't know that the Prince of Hearts is an evil Fate who likes lost causes. So she ends up making a deal with him. This Fate is named Jacks, and he will stop the wedding in exchange for Evangeline kissing three different people.
Legends say that the kiss of the Prince of Hearts is deadly. But that is a concern for the future Evangeline.

The story clearly has high potential. What I didn't like is that at first everything sounded very fairy tale-like and fantastical; I didn't think about quitting, but that atmosphere clashed with me and didn’t quite fit. As I progressed through the story and it started to take shape, everything became a little darker. I don’t know at what point I ended up liking it, but the relationship between Jacks and Evangeline throughout the reading appealed to me. I also liked the other Fates and characters. It has a good plot twist, and at several moments it made me cry like crazy!
It left me wanting to read the next one. Even so, I can't shake the feeling that the story could have been more.

Evangeline is a beautiful young woman with pink hair, naive, pure, and on a quest for her happy ending (which I find somewhat sickening ?), and with Jacks in her life, that is something far from being achieved.
Jacks is a jerk, handsome with blue eyes and golden blonde hair; now, calling him a jerk doesn't cut it. It’s worth mentioning that he is ruthless and insensitive (I'll be fair with him, only half-insensitive, since his concepts of sensitivity, love, etc., are not the same as humans). Still, he can be unbearably charming.

They are two very opposite poles, and their lives are tied as long as those debts remain unpaid. At this point, anything could happen, but knowing Jacks, he could ruin everything ?. But oh well, I need to start the second one to know if he likes the human or if he is really just using her. How detestable. And of course, also to find out how the story continues, which ended right at a critical point!!! (Translated from Spanish)

This book is undoubtedly the gem we were waiting for from the author to continue exploring the fascinating story of Jacks. Before diving into these pages, I highly recommend delving into the "Caraval" trilogy, as it provides essential context about various aspects and reveals how magic works in the environment where the characters operate.
I was deeply moved to discover that Jacks, the prince of hearts, was experiencing the pain of heartbreak, a feeling that seemed distant for someone in his position. On several occasions, the plot kept me on edge, especially while exploring this new facet of the main character.
I must admit that, at first, Evangeline's personality on some pages was somewhat baffling to me, even driving me crazy. However, over time, I managed to understand her and even develop an affection for her complexity.
This book is addictive and can easily be devoured in a day or two. The plot captivates you in a way that makes it hard to put the book down. A must-read for lovers of magic, intrigue, and of course, for those who were enchanted by Jacks in the previous trilogy. (Translated from Spanish)

    Review:

Evangeline lives in a fantastic world, filled with tales and fantastic beings called Destinies.

In a desperate attempt to stop the wedding of her beloved, she seeks the help of the prince of hearts, a destiny famous for not finding the love of his life and whose kisses are destined to kill.

Evangeline and Jacks unite their lives under a deal, where our protagonist must kiss three people that Jacks wants, without any complaints, in exchange for stopping the wedding.

However, she soon realizes that involving her life with a destiny is the worst decision she could have made.

    Personal Opinion:

I expected much more from this book.

The characters did not connect with me, Evangeline came off as a heavy character, and annoyingly foolish at times.

Overall, the essence of fantasy is amazing; you really feel like you are reading a fairy tale. It has been a long time since fantasy books felt this way.

But at the same time, I felt like absolutely nothing was happening. It has a lot of potential to create something much more fantastic, which I hope to see in the upcoming installments. (Translated from Spanish)

Oh! I think to get into context I should have read Caraval and I really tried but it just didn't catch my attention. I feel that young adult fantasy is falling into repetition and clichés, and this is a clear example, a good story in itself but one that I'll ultimately forget. Jacks is the mysterious character, looks like a heartbreaker, cold and blah blah blah just like always. Evangeline is a girl with a sad past, an orphan, uncertain background, completely naive and used for a greater purpose, which I've already seen a ton of times. I don't know if the other books improve the plot but I'm in ? mode and I don't know if I can handle discovering it. (Translated from Spanish)

It was a very quick read that you finish in no time. The story is very entertaining and interesting, and its characters grow and develop wonderfully. I love Jacks; whenever he appeared on stage, it was the most incredible part of it all. The intrigues were very well handled, and I feel they had coherence and a good ending! (Translated from Spanish)
