From National Book Award-winning author Elizabeth Acevedo comes the story of one Dominican American family told through the voices of its women
Flor has a gift: she can predict, to the day, when someone will die. So when she decides she wants a living wake—a party to bring her family and community together to celebrate the long life she’s led—her sisters are surprised. Has Flor foreseen her own death, or someone else’s? Does she have other motives? She refuses to tell her sisters, Matilde, Pastora, and Camila.
But Flor isn’t the only person with secrets: her sisters are hiding things, too. And the next generation, cousins Ona and Yadi, face tumult of their own.
Spanning the three days prior to the wake, Family Lore traces the lives of each of the Marte women, weaving together past and present, Santo Domingo and New York City. Told with Elizabeth Acevedo’s inimitable and incandescent voice, this is an indelible portrait of sisters and cousins, aunts and nieces—one family’s journey through their history, helping them better navigate all that is to come.

Editor's Note
Award-winning author…
In her adult debut, Acevedo (author of the National Book Award-winning “The Poet X”) follows the always spirited, often magical lives of the Marte women. Several members of this Dominican American family are blessed with gifts, like Flor’s ability to predict the time and nature of everyone’s death. She plans her own “living wake,” bringing the family together as they’re all dealing with dramas, crises, and surprises. A woman-centric family saga written with heart and humor.

This book is a good read. I enjoyed the audible version as it made the characters easier to follow. There were times that I struggled even so to keep the sisters apart. Great info about the DR and the family ties that bind us no matter how far from home we go. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

This was a slow but enjoyable story of all the intricacies of a family and the ways we lean on and pull away from one another through all of life. It was confusing at times to know who's view we were looking at the world from. But it was nice. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5

I think the author failed at writing this book. She needs to stay YA. I was very disappointed and couldn't stay with it. I was an anticipated book, but sadly, it is a miss. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Absolute slog to get through this book. Kitchen sink drama with no actual interesting drama. Characters are all forgettable. Had no idea who the author was, but now the fact that she is a YA author makes total sense: she tries way too eye-rollingly hard to include adult content that is just unpleasant to read. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Acevedo can do no wrong in my book. Her first adult fiction was as amazing as the rest of her works. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

A family erotica in the sense that each person has their own identity and their own way of making love to life and embracing their gifts talents, faults and misgivings or at least balancing them the way us humans do it best, with chaos and revelry
