The Hobbit

I didn't realize this was an abridged version when I borrowed it from the library but it was really enjoyable. I felt like I was listening to the movie.
The audio though was all over the place. I can forgive the original but I feel like the new release could have edited the sounds better.

What can one say? A charming children's book for adults, with hints of darker things to come in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Very entertaining! It's a dramatized version for the radio, which I wasn't expecting, but it definitely added to the experience.

Wasn't a fan of some of the voice acting at times but it wasn't bad enough to make me stop listening. Of course the story was great!

Not that Tolkien needs any more good press now that much of the world has read his works, but I will still say that it was amazing. I read it first in 5th grade and my class made a clay map of Bilbo's journey. This is a book that will last through the ages.

Such a classic and beautiful adventure, the fact that it’s a full cast really makes you get immersed in the story. Loved it!

Well, my last book of last year was The Hobbit and it's the first book of this year, too.

I read it this time, instead of listening to an audiobook. I actually enjoyed reading it a bit more since it helped me absorb places and names a bit better. Oddly, though, I still didn't enjoy the second half of the book as much. I'm not really sure why. I like it up to Mirkwood but after that, I get a little restless until we meet Smaug. Maybe it's the way the elves treat Bilbo. They're kinda mean.

I also think the whole Bilbo-knocked-unconcious-so-the-author-doesn't-have-to-describe-a-battle-in-depth thing is funny and a good work around. Gotta love limited 3rd person POV.

What a glorious story! I can't believe it took me so long to get around to reading it. It will definitely stay a favourite of mine. It's really a wonderful tale, and easy to see how it's remained a classic.

It was originally recommend by my dad. The copy I have is the one that used to be on his shelves; this spine thoroughly cracked and half the map is missing. I can see why he wanted me to read it. ❤

The book is amazing, this reading is terrible. Two words

I know he's considered a master, but I couldn't help feeling what I always feel reading Tolkien: a little bored. I don't feel that he draws strong enough characters to pull me in. The plot feels like "this happened, and then this, and then this..." While I enjoy some of the scenarios, I don't ever feel like it adds up to...much. And though I enjoyed refreshing my memory of the story (looking toward the film), I wish that I enjoyed it more. Will I ever tackle the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy? Maybe. I hear so many great things. On the other hand, I might reread Zelazny (Amber) or finish Moorcock (Elric) or begin reading Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire).

The staple of all Fantasy Works...This book is priceless.

Über book! Fell in love with it at the first sight and even more after I've read it.

One of my favorite books of all time! Listening to it with these voice actors rather than the stars from the movie sort of threw me off at first, but I still enjoyed it!

good fantasy

Read aloud to the family in the car. It is an excellent story without being an excellent novel. The storyline digressions and the major characters introduced in the final three chapters are poor from a storytelling standpoint but believable in the context within which Tolkien wrote - that of a history.

This is adapted for radio, not a true audiobook, but it's largely unchanged and the cast is good.

This is still one of my all time favorite books!

For some reason, I've never really thought of the Hobbit as a children's books, even though its intended audience is children and I was a 10-year-old when I first read Tolkien's books. Upon my rereading, I realized how different The Hobbit is to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The story is much lighter and even laugh out loud funny in certain areas. Also the I feel like young folks would be able to relate to Bilbo. The organization is also fairly simple--each chapter deals with a different creature. On this rereading, I could also see how The Hobbit was more like The Chronicles of Narnia series, which I have always identified as children's books.

It must come with age and being disappointed with the film but listening to this now it has lost the wonder and charm it once held for me.

The Hobbit was my favourite J.R.R. Tolkien. I loved the Hobbit more than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I love Bilbo, Smeagol and the dwarves equally.

This wasn't for me. I have attempted to read it many times over the years and finally set a deadline to complete it. I don't understand the hype around it but at least now I know my opinion.

I didn’t realize this was a radio play until the end of the first recording. I was on a road trip with no service and had downloaded this figuring it was a reading of the book. I enjoyed it fine, but I would have preferred the dialogue In written form as opposed to spoken.

Rob Inglis Audiobooks's 2011:

I started these as a combination of reading another favorite series of Stephanie's and challenging myself to read one of the few series in my teens that I voted "too boring to continue" (in the middle of Two Towers), yet it is something so well known, considered canon/classic.

My favorite part of listening to this one:

Listening to Rob Inglis sing, and listening to Rob Inglis sing in every single type of race and kind of voice. I own that I would really listen to this man sing anything at this point. I totally want to know if he has cd's.

The ensemble cast is great. Really defined all the characters. 10/10 will listen again.
