Ally Schlegel's 16th-minute strike proved decisive as the Chicago Red Stars edged the host Portland Thorns 1-0 at Providence Park on Friday night. The victory improves Chicago's record to 8-2-10 (23 points), while Portland falls to 8-3-9 (27 points).

Schlegel capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Thorns, slotting home from the right side of the box past goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.

Portland had several opportunities to equalize but were thwarted by solid defense and key saves from Alyssa Naeher. Sophia Smith led the charge for Portland with five shots, though none found their mark.

Mallory Swanson had a chance to double Chicago's lead in the second half with a penalty kick in the 49th minute after Reyna Reyes was booked for a foul in the area. However, Arnold came up big for Portland with an impressive save low to her left.

Up next: The Thorns will look to bounce back when they visit Angel City FC on Sept. 23 (10 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network). Meanwhile, the Red Stars return home against San Diego FC on Sept. 21  (9:30 p.m., Paramount+).
