We provide global solutions.

Our technology is used by more than 6,000 clients in over 85 countries. We are dedicated to developing solutions that provide better drainage and water quality, and ultimately improve quality of life.

These solutions are practical and easy to implement globally — promoting healthier communities, sustained ecosystems, increased bio-diversity and reduced environmental impact.

We develop industry-leading software.

PCSWMM, our principal software, allows engineers to analyze flooding and facilitate responsible urban and natural drainage planning and design. Powerful and scalable, yet easy-to-use and affordable, it continues to be the trusted spatial decision support system for US EPA SWMM and EPANET.

Built with a practicing engineer in mind, PCSWMM streamlines workflow, improves efficiency and accuracy, reduces project time, saves resources, and improves collaboration — all of which enables our clients to be more productive and more competitive.

We’re an experienced and innovative team.

CHI is made up of professional engineers, seasoned educators and software professionals with a wealth of industry knowledge and a long history (40+ years) of application development.

We are highly committed to technological innovation and continually collaborate with clients to improve tools and develop new applications — our team has published over 200 technical papers on water management.

We excel in service and knowledge-transfer.

We take pride in delivering professional excellence in our software solutions, consulting engineering, technical support, training, and knowledge-transfer services:

TRAINING SERVICES

Whether beginners or seasoned users, our flexible training workshops help clients understand and master the full capabilities of EPA SWMM, EPANET and PCSWMM.

CONSULTING SERVICES

Over 40 years, we've built a solid reputation and are internationally recognized for excellent engineering, modeling and review services. Put our experience, knowledge, and innovation to work for you.

SUPPORT

We’ve built whole community platforms to support you. OpenSWMM and OpenEPANET allows users to ask questions, get answers, review and compare the open source code, suggest improvements and share modifications.

JOURNAL

The Journal of Water Management Modeling is our peer-reviewed, open-access online journal. It helps modellers expand their knowledge, get insights and discover tips that will help them work more effectively.

CONFERENCE

Our annual International Conference on Water Management Modeling allows attendees to meet colleagues, exchange ideas, learn from experts and be on the forefront of advances in our profession.

Our Philosophy

We believe that urban water systems can be designed in a way that supports environmental goals rather than working against them. Our PCSWMM software gives engineers the tools to design urban water systems that are less invasive, less disruptive, closer to the intended natural hydrologic function, and that encourage higher biodiversity. These tools not only facilitate responsible planning and design; they ultimately lead to healthier human communities.

INFORMED DESIGN

Traditional engineering and its bedfellows have sought to minimize entropy — using methods that ultimately replace natural habitats with surfaces that are generally abiotic or worse.

We believe that the design of sympathetic water systems greatly impacts the quality of life for humankind and all nature. Rather than confining thinking to just Newtonian physics, we believe that practitioners ought to direct their attention further up the hierarchy of concerns towards ecology and Darwinian principles. In this view, a sustainable drainage system is an environment supporting a diverse host of life-forms, which adjusts as the population mix evolves – and which ideally is designed to maximize bio-diversity.

This fostering of a wider biodiversity of plants and animals inevitably encourages the development of thriving human societies.

CONTINUOUS MODELING

Changing traditional mindsets and planning such systems is challenging — it requires building more complex models that support wider bases for knowledge. For instance, we model the gamut of flow velocities, depths, temperature, pH, turbidity and chemicals and link to aquatic ecosystem models — this approach requires a continuous modeling philosophy.

CHI has developed, and will continue to develop, solutions that ultimately result in reducing our ecological footprint, bettering our environment and improving the quality of life for all.
