This chapter introduces key theories and ideas surrounding the design, development, delivery and analysis of events. The chapter provides definitions of key terms, explains underpinning models and illustrates the range and scope of the events industry. Through the use of short case studies the chapter also demonstrates the range of activities that are classed as 'events' and explores the relationship between events and tourism, hospitality, leisure, business, fundraising, charities and sport.

This chapter discusses the origin of stored-grain insect pests, the assessment of storage losses, the detection of insect infestation in stored commodities using physical, chemical and staining, the identification of insects in stored grain, and the sources of infestation. The storage structures and the traditional methods of storage are briefly described. The components of integrated pest management of stored grains, which include pest monitoring/sampling, physical, biological and chemical insecticides (including botanicals, insect growth regulators and fumigants) are described. The non-insect pests of stored grain and their management using various chemicals are also described. The existing postharvest system has to be improved to cut postharvest losses at the farm level where ∼70% of grains are stored and consumed as food and feed and for seed purposes.

This chapter introduces the amenity migrants and describes the development of their movement into a societal phenomenon, and also the knowledge about this phenomenon, focusing on its most current significant manifestation - in mountain areas of the world. The chapter then outlines the key motivators and facilitators of amenity migration as well as the cultural, economic and biophysical effects of amenity migration and the little being done in response in the public sector. The chapter concludes with suggested strategic means for managing amenity migration.

This chapter examines how information and communication technologies play an important role in each of the five stages of the buyers' decision making process, and that eTourism is in the centre of consumer processes for purchasing tourism products. These five stages include need recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, purchase decision and post-purchase behaviour.

By investigating learning at literary festivals, this chapter aims to address the gaps in understanding how people learn while practising tourism. It begins by presenting literary festivals in the context of literary tourism before going on to consider a number of theoretical approaches that could be employed in the attempt to further understand how learning forms part of the experience of attending literary festivals. Individual cultural capital acquisition among literary festival attendees are then examined. Key among the questions posed are whether people enhance their cultural knowledge and skills by participating in literary festivals and whether literary festivals are rewarding and fulfilling experiences that lead to personal self-improvement. Empirically, findings of an exploratory study focusing on tourist audiences attending two book festivals in Dublin, Ireland, are reported.

The chapter presents case studies of indigenous tourism enterprises in a remote rural community and in a protected area in Australia that have worked to contribute to the values of sustainable development for indigenous peoples. The first case study, the 'Gunya Titjikala', is an indigenous tourism enterprise that operates amidst the challenges of pro-poor tourism and the maintenance of cultural integrity, but also sees indigenous tourism providing a future for their community. The second case study focuses on the co-management of the Kakadu National Park by the local indigenous peoples and the national resource management agencies. The coupling of local management control of natural resources and nature-based tourism can empower local communities, alleviate poverty and preserve local cultures.

This chapter considers the specifics of rural institution formation and development of rural tourism business by drawing attention to the ways community engagement can be achieved considering the limitation of rural areas in developing countries. Apart from that, the text is built upon the discussion of current challenges for community engagement and rural tourism businesses and an effort to introduce some considerations in planning institutional and collaborative programmes for rural communities.

This chapter argues for a shift from the traditional value perspectives to a more holistic representation of socially constructed value in practice. This chapter is organized in three parts. In the first part, an overview is offered of how value has been conceptualized in the service marketing literature and events literature, more specifically in order to set the scene for an alternative practice-based value approach in the event and festival context. This approach combines the recently emerged marketing concept of co-creation and the view of value as co-created in the social practices of event attendees. The second part of the chapter explores examples of three categories of event and festival social practices (namely, bonding, communing and belonging), in order to demonstrate, in the third part, how this value approach could help to inform empirical value explorations and applications in the context of event and festival marketing.

This paper introduces a new approach: Value Chain Thinking or VCT. VCT involves chain members collaborating to understand, create, deliver and share value as defined by shoppers and consumers. The aim of collaboration is that the value chain improves its effectivenes(maximising the opportunities for creating value) and its efficiency (creating and delivering that value at least cost and with minimum wastage). In this way, collaboration increases the size of the pie, and so chain members collectively can increase the size of each of their own slices without needing to reduce someone else's. Animal dispersers are essential for many non-native plants since they facilitate seed movement and might promote seed germination and seedling establishment, thereby increasing their chances of invasion. This chapter reviews the published literature on seed dispersal of non-native plant species by native and/or non-native animals. The following questions are addressed: (i) Are interactions between non-native plants and their animal dispersers evenly studied worldwide? (ii) Which are the distinctive traits (i.e. geographical origin, life form, dispersal strategy and propagule traits) of non-native plants that are dispersed by animals? (iii) Which are the most studied groups of dispersers of non-native plants around the world? (iv) Does the literature provide evidence for the Invasional Meltdown Hypothesis (non-native plant-non-native disperser facilitation)? Worldwide, one of the most important diseases threatening the sustainability of taro production is taro leaf blight (TLB), caused by the oomycete pathogen P. colocasiae. This chapter describes the loss of taro productivity due to TLB; and the morphology and genetic diversity of the pathogen. Integrated pest management practices, including (i) field sanitation; (ii) selection of healthy, disease-free vegetative propagules; (iii) use of compost or green manure; (iv) crop rotation; (v) registered pesticides; (vi) removal of diseased leaves; and (vii) use of TLB-resistant cultivars, to control P. colocasiae are briefly discussed. The breeding of taro for increased TLB resistance is described, and the current and future directions to improve TLB resistance in taro are given.
