Wicking

In this research paper, an instrument was designed and developed to measure the vertical wicking behavior of textile fabrics. This instrument measures the vertical wicking capability of the fabric samples with respect to time very precisely by the non-contact method using color sensors. It records the vertical wicking time of the fabric using color sensors which analyse the change of color in the fabric caused by the color solution used for wicking. The color sensors are arranged vertically at equal intervals. For validating the developed instrument, four types of woven and knitted fabric samples were tested at first using the standard manual test method and next using the developed instrument. The results were compared for its accuracy and repeatability. Results obtained from this developed instrument were highly correlated with the manual method and were reliable. Improvement of moisture management properties Polyester and Polyester cotton blended fabrics have been improved by several techniques hence it improves the moisture vapour absorption and desorption. In this work we studied the effect of the surface treated fabric by applying Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) Particles using two different procedures. The first method was to dissolve MCC particles and form a MCC solution which further was blended with a textile binder to obtain the fabric coating. The second treatment was direct blending MCC particles with the same textile binder in order to get the fabric finishing to be sprayed on the fabric surface. The percentage of MCC particles was chosen 6%, as this ratio can be considered the most appropriate one. The effect of these treatments on fabrics moisture wettability with varying percentage of coating was studied. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate plasma treatment for Tencel microfibre fabrics for
possible improvement in various functional properties.
Design/methodology/approach – The plasma treated and untreated fabrics were dyed using reactive
dyes and evaluated for comfort properties such as wicking, water vapour permeability and air permeability.
Findings – The various comfort properties of plasma treated and an untreated Tencel microfibre fabric have
been studied. The wicking results showed a significant reduction in wicking time for plasma treated fabrics
compared to untreated fabrics. The test results for water vapour permeability show no significant difference
between plasma treated and untreated fabrics. The plasma treated samples show higher air permeability
than untreated samples. In the wetting test, it is clearly seen that the plasma treated samples absorbed the
water at a faster rate.
Originality/value – This research investigates plasma treatment for Tencel microfibre fabrics for possible
improvement in various functional properties.

In this study, the quick dry properties of summer men's T-shirts of different brands (Nike, Adidas, Laishilong and Columbia) in Hong Kong market were explored by analyzing the wicking behavior. Laishilong was found to be the best sample in terms of vertical wicking for both short and long period. For the Nike fabrics, the wicking rate in courses direction was better than that in wales direction, whereas the vertical wicking of front body for Adidas was better than the back body. By contrast, Columbia performed the poorest in terms of vertical wicking for long period. With the help of this study, the general wicking properties of men's quick-dry sportswear in the market can be compared which provide some idea to the consumer for product selection.

Plasma technology offers many interesting possibilities for the production of high-value-added textiles. Nevertheless, textiles can have a considerable structural and chemical complexity, and their properties must be taken into account for the implementation of plasma processes. The influences of some of these properties are highlighted through several examples of recent interesting applications, such as the metallization of polyester yarns, the enhancement of fabric moisture wicking and the surface functionalization with plasma polymerization.

Characterization of transport and absorption properties of nanofiber webs is a challenge, because in many cases the material is soft and cannot withstand the stresses exerted by the standard instruments. In this paper, we report on development of a new technique for materials characterization. We propose to conduct wicking and permeability experiments for full characterization of the nanowebs. As an example, we used electrospun cellulose acetate nanowebs. The wicking experiments showed very good reproducibility, demonstrating the square-root-of-time dependence of wetting front position vs time. The prefactor depends on a product of capillary pressure and materials permeability. We developed a technique to independently measure the permeability of small samples of nanowebs. Wicking and permeability data allow one to estimate the pore size; SEM micrographs confirmed the obtained estimates of pore radius. In general, the proposed method allows one to characterize the transport and absorption parameters of the nanofibrous materials for which the standard procedures are inapplicable.

The capillary penetration of fluids in thin porous layers is of fundamental interest in nature and various industrial applications. When capillary flows occur in porous media, the extent of penetration is known to increase with the square root of time following the Lucas-Washburn law. In practice, volatile liquid evaporates at the surface of porous media, which restricts penetration to a limited region. In this work, on the basis of Darcy's law and mass conservation, a general theoretical model is developed for the evaporation-limited radial capillary penetration in porous media. The presented model predicts that evaporation decreases the rate of fluid penetration and limits it to a critical radius. Furthermore, we construct a unified phase diagram that describes the limited penetration in an annular porous medium, in which the boundaries of outward and inward liquid are predicted quantitatively. It is expected that the proposed theoretical model will advance the understanding of penetration dynamics in porous media and facilitate the design of engineered porous architectures.
