Özet Hadis ve fıkhın erken dönemiyle ilgilenen oryantalist araştırmacıların Muvatta' hakkında önemli bir literatür oluşmasına imkan sağlayacak kadar sayıda eser kaleme aldığını söylemek mümkündür. Bu çalışmalar arasında özellikle Muvatta'ın ortaya çıktığı dönemi tartışması itibariyle kendisinden sonra pek çok kitap, makale ve değerlendirmenin yazılmasına neden olması sebebiyle Norman Calder'ın Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence adlı eserini zikretmek önem arz etmektedir. Bu makalede Calder'a eleştiriler yönelten araştırmacılar arasında özellikle Wael B. Hallaq ve Harald Motzki'nin tenkidleri ele alınarak hem Oryantalist paradigmanın içerisindeki ilmî ve fikrî süreklilik ortaya konulmuş hem de Oryantalist araştırmacıların tamamının aynı fikre sahip olduğu ve onlar tarafından kaleme alınan her eserin benzer sonuçlar içerdiği şeklinde genellemeci bir yaklaşımın yol açacağı muhtemel hatalara dikkat çekilmiştir. Oryantalist paradigmanın hadis ilminin temel bir problemi hakkındaki yaklaşımını tespit edebilmenin, ancak ilgili mesele etrafında ortaya çıkan çalışmaların tamamını bir arada görmek ve değerlendirmek ile mümkün olabildiği düşüncesini ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bu makale, söz konusu literatürden istifade etmek isteyen bilim insanlarına bir yöntem ve perspektif sunmayı da ön görmektedir.

This work is a call to reform modern Islamic political thought. As a moral-legal project premised on love of the Divine, Islamism undermines itself via its own authoritarian logic.

I argue that a prime cause for the disappointments of modern Islamism is its failure to understand the concept, genealogy and implications of the modern state. Specifically, the simultaneous under-theorisation and assimilation of the modern state renders Islamic political philosophy inauthentic to the intellectual history of Muslim societies, and foreign to the spiritual message of the Quran.

This thesis is therefore a study of the idea of the state, the meaning of law, and the production of normativity in these contexts. I will argue that the dominating impulse of modern Islamism is rooted in a complicity with an Enlightenment modernity.

I argue only in understanding the ethic of premodern Islamic governance, which functioned on a core understanding of the human soul, can the moral project of Islamic politics be redeemed –an urgent task in a modernity premised solely on the material, the economic, the political and the instrumental.

يُعَدُّ وائل حلاق أبرز من تفاعل مع أطروحة الفيلسوف طه عبد الرحمن في السياقِ الغربي، وهو المفكر العمومي والعالم الكبير في تاريخ النظريات الفقهية وتراث الشريعة الإسلامية بجامعة كولومبيا بأمريكا. وقد اشتهر اسم وائل حلاق مع أعماله الفكرية العامة التي استثمر فيها عمله التاريخي المتخصِّص في التراث الفقهي، لتقديم رؤى نقدية لمشروع الحداثة والدولة الحديثة كما جاء في كتابهِ المهم «الدولة المستحيلة» THE IMPOSSIBLE STATE، ولتوسيع وتعميق إرث نقد الاستشراق، وذلك في كتابهِ «قصور الاستشراق» RESTATING ORIENTALISM. إلا أننا في هذا الحوار الذي خصَّ به المفكر الكبير وائل حلاق مركز نهوض، سنتفاعل معه حول مضامين كتابه الأخير عن فلسفة طه عبد الرحمن، الذي جاء بعنوان «إصلاح الحداثة: الأخلاق والإنسان الجديد في فلسفة طه عبد الرحمن» REFORMING MODERNITY :Ethics and the New Human in the Philosophy of Abdurrahman Taha الصادر عن مطبعة جامعة كولومبيا سنة 2019.

Filistin asıllı  olup İslam hukuku, İslam düşünce tarihi alanlarında önemli çalışmalar kaleme alan Wael B. Hallaq, Columbia Üniversitesi’nde (NYC) Ortadoğu, Güney Asya ve Afrika Çalışmaları Bölümü’nde (MESAAS) görev yapmaktadır. Çeyrek asırdan daha fazla süredir İslam hukuku alanındaki çalışmaları sebebiyle Batıda en etkin isim olduğu kabul edilen Hallaq,  oryantalist araştırmacıların İslam ile ilgili ürettiği bilgilerin sorgulanmasını sağlayan önemli çalışmalar kaleme almıştır. Akademik çalışmalarının ilk yıllarında İslam hukuk usulu ve işleyişi konusundaki eserleriyle ön plana çıkan yazar, daha sonra oryantalist araştırmacıların İslam ile ilgili tezlerine yönelik eleştirel yönü ağırlıklı geniş tahliller ihtiva eden çalışmalar kaleme almıştır. Bu yöndeki birikiminin neticesinde son on yıldır oryantalizm ve modernite tenkidi ağırlıklı çalışmalar kaleme almış ve Batı ahlak düşüncesini konu alan eserleriyle dikkatleri üzerine çekmiştir. Telif ettiği çalışmalar hem Türkiye’de hem de dünyanın pekçok ülkesinde farklı dillere tercüme edilerek haklı bir şöhret elde eden Hallaq’ın sahip olduğu bu teveccüh, TÜBA Akademi Konseyi’nce 2020 TÜBA Uluslararası Akademi Ödülleri kapsamında Sosyal ve Beşeri Bilimler kategorisinde ödüle layık görülerek, pekiştirilmiştir.
Restating Orientalism: A Critique of Modern Knowledge adlı kitabıyla modernite eleştirisinin başarılı bir örneğini ortaya koyan Hallaq, modernitenin ürettiği bilgiyi oryantalizm bağlamında kritik etmektedir. Söz konusu çalışma, 2018 yılında Columbia University Press tarafından yayınlanmış ve kısa bir süre içerisinde Şarkiyatçılığı Yeniden Düşünmek: Modern Bilginin Eleştirisi  adıyla Türkçe’ye tercüme edilmiştir. Bu önemli çalışmaya pekçok tanıtım  ve değerlendirme yazısının yazılacağı muhakkak; ancak biz ilgili eserin kıymetini ortaya koymaya ve müellifinin temel iddialarını tespite yönelik bir araştırma notu amacıyla bu çalışmayı kaleme almaktayız.

It is possible to say that the orientalist researchers who showed a particular interest in the early period of hadith and Islamic jurisprudence have written enough to form a significant literature on Muwatta'. Among these works, Norman Calder's Studies in Early Muslim Jurisprudence is worthy of note, for it discusses the period in which Muvatta' emerged and his book is widely discussed in many books, articles and reviews. In this article, the scientific and intellectual continuity within the orientalist paradigm will be discussed, as well as the possible mistakes caused by a generalist approach asserting that all orientalist researchers have the same mindset and each study made by them arrives at similar conclusions. The subject will be handled through the criticisms made researchers for Calder; especially Wael B. Hallaq and Harald Motzki. This article aims to present the idea that the only way to determine the approach of the Orientalist paradigm on any fundamental issue of the science of hadith, all of the studies ever done in that particular subject must be evaluated together. It also aims to provide a method and a perspective to researchers who want to benefit from orientalist literature.

Doğu ile Batı arasındaki ontolojik ve epistemolojik ayırıma dayalı düşünme biçimi olarak tanımlanan oryantalizm terimi ile kendisini oryantalizm üzerinden konumlandırıp Doğulular’ın Batı’yla ilgili incelemelerini karşılayan oksidentalizm kavramı, bu makalenin ana konusunu teşkil etmektedir. Her iki kavrama yönelik yapılan tanımlamaların keyfiyetinin yanı sıra ilgili terimlerin mefhumuna dair ortaya çıkan değerlendirmeler ve bunlara yöneltilen bazı önemli tenkidler, çalışmada ele alınacaktır. Türkçe literatürde yeteri kadar tartışıldığı düşünülmeyen oksidentalizm teriminin merkeze alındığı bu çalışma ilgili kavramın anlam arayışına yönelik teorik bir inceleme sunulacaktır.
Oryantalist paradigmaya karşı oksidentalist söylemin imkanını tartışan bu makale, kavramsal bir analiz sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Oryantalizm ve oksidentalizm bağlamında ortaya çıkan literatürün dikkate alınacağı bu makalede her iki disiplinin müşterek noktalarına, farklılıklarına vurguda bulunarak bir karşılaştırma yapılacaktır. Bu mukayese sırasında ilgili kavramları tanımlayarak ön plana çıkan araştırmacıların yanı sıra özellikle bu konuların ele alındığı Türkçe çalışmalarda kendilerine çok fazla atıfta bulunulmayan isimler ve değerlendirmeleri ön plana çıkarılacaktır. Böylece söz konusu kavramların mahiyetini anlamaya katkı sunmak amaçlanmaktadır.
Oryantalist müktesebât karşısında kendi tarihsel tecrübesiyle yol alan oksidentalist söylemin, Doğu’dan Batı’yı bir okuma imkanı sunduğu kabul edilirse, oryantalizm-oksidentalizm kavramsal dikotomisinin yarattığı sorun alanından kurtulmak mümkün hale gelecektir. Bu sebeple bir söylem düzeyinde tartışılan oksidentalizmin, oryantalist paradigmaya mukabil olup olmadığının tartışılacağı bu çalışmada her iki kavram, içinde yer aldıkları disiplinlerin temel yaklaşımları göz önünde bulundurularak incelenecektir./

Occidentalist Discourse as a Counterpart to Orientalist Paradigm: A Conceptual Analysis

This article discusses the concept of orientalism defined as a way of thinking based on the ontological and epistemological distinction between East and West, as well as the concept of occidentalism that denotes an Eastern review of the West, positioning itself in relation to orientalism. Definations offered for both concepts followed by some main criticisms directed towards their given meanings will be examined. This study which mainly focuses on the concept of occidentalism that is not considered to be discussed enough in the Turkish literature, offers a theoretical examination of the meaning of occidentalism.
This article, which discusses the possibility of an occidentalist discourse against the orientalist paradigm, aims to present a conceptual analysis. Considering the orientalist and occidentalist literature, a comparison will be made by emphasizing the common points and differences of both disciplines. Prominent researchers who defined these concepts as well as other names that are not referred to much in the Turkish studies that deal with this topic and their evaluations will be highlighted. Thus, it is aimed to contribute to understanding these terms.
If it is accepted that the occidentalist discourse, which proceeds with its own historical experience against the orientalist tradition, offers an opportunity to an Eastern reading of the West, it will be possible to get rid of the problem area created by the conceptual dichotomy between orientalism and ocidentalism. Therefore in this study which discusses whether occidentalism is a counterpart to orientalism or not, both concepts will be examined by considering basic approaches of these two disciplines.

This paper primarily attempts to answer the question of whether the Sharī'a and the modern state are, or can hope to be, compatible in practice or theory. The study reviews three recent works by prominent scholars of Islamic law that address the issue: Professor Wael Hallaq's The Impossible State, Noah Feldman's The Fall and Rise of the Islamic State and Abdullahi An-Na'im's Islam and the Secular State. The paper seeks to characterize and analyze their multiplicity of approaches, theoretical frameworks and conclusions. It also addresses the diverse assumptions and conceptual paradigms from within which they emerge. It examines the theories and findings of the authors in relation to central analytical categories that underlie the issue of the compatibility, or lack thereof, of the Sharī'a with the state. These are: the state itself, and liberalism and colonialism as its byproducts. Finally, it delves into the crucial matter of subject formation under the premodern Islamic and modern paradigms, issue which directly bears upon, and actually determines, the central query of the paper. Because of its significance to the crux of this study, the paper begins by endeavoring to describe what the Sharī'a was in premodernity. It also addresses the problems inherent in speaking about communities, epistemologies, structures, and ways of understanding life that no longer exist and are utterly foreign to our modern language and conceptions.

İslâm hukuku sahasındaki çalışmalarıyla tanınan ve hâlihazırda Columbia Üniversi-tesi'nde profesör olarak görev yapan Wael B. Hallaq'ın 2019' da yayımlanmış olan son ki-tabı Reforming Modernity: Ethics and the New Human in the Philosophy of Abdurrahman Taha, çok geçmeden Türkçeye tercüme edilerek Mayıs 2020' de Türk okuyucusuna ulaştı. Bu eserde, Faslı düşünür Abdurrahman Taha'nın (d. 1944) modernizm-İslâm ilişkisine dair gö-rüşleri, Hallaq tarafından aktarılmakta ve tartışılmaktadır. Çalışmalarını takip edenler için Hallaq'ın, çağdaşı bir düşünürün görüşlerini ele alan müstakil bir kitap yazmış olması şa-şırtıcı gelebilir. Onun neden Abdurrahman Taha ile özel olarak ilgilendiği ve Taha'nın gö-rüşlerine neden böylesi bir önem atfettiği sorusunun cevabı, kitabın hemen başında, Hal-laq'ın Türkçe tercümeye özel yazdığı önsözde karşımıza çıkar (s.15). Hallaq, İslâm hukuku ve düşüncesi üzerine çalışan bir akademisyen olarak, küresel ölçekteki tartışmalarda İslâm'ın sunduğu önerme ve yaklaşımların dikkate alınması gerektiği hususunda özel bir hassasiyete sahiptir. Bu hassasiyet aslında Hallaq'ın, İslâmî söylemlerin hâkim Batılı kabullere yönelik kuvvetli eleştiriler yöneltebilme potansiyeline sahip olduğuna dair inancından kaynaklanır. İşte tam da bu noktada Hallaq'ın Abdurrahman Taha'ya dikkat kesilmesinin gerekçesi ortaya çıkar: Hallaq, modernizmin bir ilerleme teolojisi (theology of progress) olduğunu iddia ettiği modernizm eleştirisi projesinin ilk iki adımı olarak Impossible State ve Restating Orientalism eserlerini kaleme almıştır. Abdurrahman Taha ise, Hallaq'ınkine benzer ve uygun argüman-larla moderniteyi eleştiren Müslüman bir düşünürdür ve Hallaq, İslâm geleneği içerisinden yöneltilmiş bu kendisininkine benzer modernite eleştirisini değerlendirmek suretiyle kendi modernizm eleştirisi projesini tamamlamak istemektedir.

Özet: İçtihat kapısının kapanıp kapanmadığı meselesi İslam âlimlerinin yanı sıra Oryantalistlerin zihin dünyasını da oldukça meşgul eden bir konudur. İslâmî ilimler sahasında birçok araştırma ve çalışma yapan Oryantalistlerden bazıları, ekoller/mezhepler teşekkül edip sistematik yapılarını tamamladıktan sonra içtihat kapısının kapandığı fikrini ileri sürmüştürler. Bu söylemi dile getirenlerden biri de Joseph Schacht'tır. O hicri dördüncü yüzyıldan itibaren içtihat kapısının kapandığını, İslam hukukunun erken dönemlerde teşekkülünü tamamladıktan sonra asırlarca değişmeden devam ettiğini ve hukukun değişmez katı kurallar bütününe dönüştüğünü iddia etmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, söz konusu iddianın gerçekliğini sorgulamaktır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda konunun daha iyi anlaşılması için öncelikle Schacht'ın İslam hukukunun kökeni ve erken dönem teşekkülüyle alakalı görüşleri, akabinde de içtihat kapısının kapalılığıyla ilgili iddiası mevzubahis edilmiştir. Daha sonra ise, İslâm hukukunun tarih içindeki dinamik yönüne dikkat çeken çağdaş araştırmacılardan Wael b. Hallaq'ın ‚Was the gate of ijtihad closed?‛ başlıklı makalesinden hareketle söz konusu iddianın gerçeği yansıtmadığı, kronolojik olarak hicri 4. yüzyıldan itibaren sonraki dönemlere doğru bir literatür incelemesi yapıldığında her dönemde içtihat yapabilecek bilgi birikimine sahip âlimlerin mevcut olduğu ve içtihatların her devirde devam ederek bu kapının hiçbir zaman kapanmadığı vaz edilmiştir.

Abstract:    The question of whether the gate of ijtihad was closed has considerably preoccupied not only Islamic scholars, but also orientalists. Some of the orientalists who made research and studies in the field of Islamic Studies, asserted that after the Islamic law schools were established and completed their systematic structure, the gate of ijtihad had closed. One of the scholars who asserted so is Joseph Schacht. He argues that the gate of ijtihad was closed since the fourth century A.H., that after its formation in the early period, Islamic law lasted for centuries without any change, transforming into only a set of unchanging strict rules. This paper aims at revealing the invalidity of his argument. In fulfilling this aim and making the topic more understandable, I will first discuss Schact’s views about the origin of Islamic law and its formation in the early period, as well as his argument regarding the closure of the gate of ijtihad. Then, based upon the article “Was the gate of ijtihad closed?”, written by Wael Hallaq who is one of the scholars remarking the dynamic aspect of Islamic law throughout history, I will argue that Schact’s approach does not reflect the reality since reviewing the literature for the period from the fourth century onwards clearly reveals that each period had scholars who are capable of performing ijtihad and issued ijtihad in every period so, this gate was never closed.

This paper seeks to analyze Imām al-Shāfi'ī's (d. 204/820) al-Risāla and some of the modern scholarship surrounding the work. It broadly tackles Uṣūl al-Fiqh (Islamic Legal Theory); its objectives and modern relevance, the development of al-Shāfi'ī as a foundational thinker and jurist within the Islamic legal tradition, and finally, certain aspects of the epistle itself. This last part argues, in contrast to Hallaq's assertions to the contrary, in favor of the direct lasting impact and influence of the work on successive generations, and on the science of Uṣūl al-Fiqh as a whole.

Professor Wael Hallaq takes a multidisciplinary approach in diagnosing the problems of modernity and, grounded in his unparalleled knowledge of Islamic history in general and the Sharī'a in particular, produces a unique critique of modernity from outside modernity.  By seriously engaging epistemes different from the one he assesses, Professor Hallaq shows us that alternative, more ethical ways of life, and different political formations existed for millennia and can exist again.  By looking outside the assumptions that created the dire situation the world is in and using Islamic premodernity and its postulations, Professor Hallaq analyzes the problems of modernity.  He asserts, among many other things, that the present Muslim crisis is not actually "Muslim:” It does not arise from modern Islam but from modernity itself.  The Impossible State successfully escapes the thought-prisons of the liberal state and looks for viable ideas elsewhere. Professor Hallaq proposes capitalizing on Islamic history as "a resource to face the challenges of the modern project, a project that has proved incapable of solving even those problems of its own making.“  Although the Sharī'a is institutionally defunct and the desire to restore it as such would be absurd and impossible, "much that is psychologically and spiritually latent has survivedand can be used as a moral resource.”

This paper seeks to understand how the Muslim subject was transformed in the Modern and post-Modern eras. Specifically, it attempts to complexify notions of 'Tradition' or 'Orthodoxy' by rightly situating historic 'Muslim' movements in the context of a dynamic Muslim world, in which freedom of practice was necessitated by the inability to homogenize belief prior to the advent of modern technological forms. Moreover, it emplaces these movements in the context of social and political worlds where debates on issues pertinent to the community of believers occurred frequently.

With Muslims dispersed over vast regions--across continents, languages and ethnic groups--the ability to control information and regulate practice by dominant political epistemes was largely ineffective compared with the forms of coercion and control that are made possible in the present day. Without access to the written word or mass media, Muslims around the world adapted 'Islam' to the local contexts at which it arrived. It is only recently, in great part due to the tools enabled by Modern transformation, that the idea of a static, un-moving 'Orthodox' 'Tradition' could be fabricated -- usually at the aim and service of power.

"’....[R]evival of Islamic knowledge’" is a subcategory of ‘revival of knowledge.’  I do not think that people would entertain such questions had they been happy and content with modernity's ways.  The reason for the rise of such issues, including "revival of Islamic knowledge," are not much different from reasons that gave rise to postmodernism, post-structuralism, post-colonialism, etc. They all express a deep sense of dissatisfaction with modernity's dominant --and indeed domineering-- structures of thought.  ‘Revival of Islamic knowledge’ is therefore the attempt by Muslims --or some at any rate-- to engage in a critique of modernity.  It is not, as I see it, a mere ‘Muslim refusal’ of modernity.  Nor is it because Muslims want to be oppositional or different for the sake of difference.  It is a worldwide movement which takes many expressions, both religious and secularist --however much I may disapprove of secularism.  Muslims are simply putting forth their own account of life and experience, as they see fit.  ‘Revival of Islamic knowledge’ is therefore a move towards freeing the Muslim Self from intellectual and material slavery, both created by the imperium of globalization.  Difference has been the emblem of humanity and its history from the dawn of time, and as such, there is nothing wrong with it.  Societies must be culturally autonomous, although this should not imply inability to live in the world with the Other." --Professor Wael Hallaq.

مقدمه مترجم: طاها عبدالرحمان (متولد ۱۹۴۴م)، فیلسوف اخلاق و دین، متافیزیکدان و منطق‌دان برجسته مراکشی/مغربی است. او که دو دکترای جدا در رشته‌های فلسفه زبان و منطق از دانشگاه سوربن پاریس در دهه‌های هفتاد و هشتاد میلادی گرفته، از مطرح‌ترین متفکران کنونی کشور مراکش است. با اینحال از آنجا که او آثارش را عمدتا به زبان عربی نگاشته، در خارج از جهان عرب‌‌زبان کمتر شناخته شده است و این یادداشت و ترجمه قرار است او را به عالم فارسی‌زبان معرفی کند.
رابطه‌ی اخلاق با سنت و مدرنیته از محورهای اساسی آثار عبدالرحمن است. مشکلات اخلاقی در مدرنیته غربی و اروپایی از جمله در شکل فجایع زیست‌ محیطی از یک طرف، و تداوم معضلات گوناگون اجتماعی-فرهنگی و اقتصادی-سیاسی در جهان عرب از سوی دیگر، او را بر تمرکز بر موضوع اخلاق سوق داده است. پرسش‌ محورین او آنست که منبع اخلاق برای بشر چیست؟ آیا چنانکه متفکران عقلگرای دوره روشنگری همچون کانت گفته‌اند عقل تنها منبع اخلاق است؟ و یا اینکه چنانکه بسیاری نظریه‌پردازان سده‌های میانه و مومنان امروزی باور دارند وحی منبع اصلی اخلاق است؟ بر همین منوال می‌شود پرسید رابطه‌ی اخلاق با نهاد حکومت چیست؟ آیا این رابطه با عبور از دوران پیشامدرن به دوره‌ی مدرن تغییری کرده است؟ جایگاه اخلاق در روابط بین‌الملل چیست؟ و آیا مسائلی هست که مدرنیته اروپایی در مواجهه با آنها از نظر اخلاقی شکست خورده باشد که لازم باشد با رجوع به سنت و اخلاق دینی جبران‌ و مرمت‌شان کنیم؟ اینها و سوالات مشابه در قلب پروژه ی فکری عبدالرحمن قرار دارند.
طاها عبدالرحمن معتقد است که در فلسفه‌ اسلامی چهار منبع عقل، وحی، فقه عملی و علم‌الاخلاق از هم جدایی‌پذیر نیستند و در واقع نوعی پایبندی به اخلاق در محور همه اینها قرار دارد. او بطور مشخص منتقد جدی دیدگاهی در میان مسلمانان سلفی و یا جهادی است که وحی را تنها منبع اخلاق می‌دانند، گرچه نگاه منحصرا عقل‌گرای فیلسوفان روشنگری را هم کافی نمی‌داند.  در نظر او نیروی اخلاقی نیرویی است که می‌تواند باعث رنسانس سیاسی و فلسفی در جهان عرب شود و حتی سهمی در رویکری تکثرگرا به اخلاق جهانی داشته باشد. طاها عبدالرحمن منتقد جدایی برخی متفکران سنتی میان «دین/شریعت و اخلاق» یا متفکران مدرن میان «واقع و ارزش» و «است و باید» است و هردو را در آثارش نقد می‌کند. نظریه جایگزینی که او ارائه می‌دهد «رویکرد پشت‌گرمی» (نسق الائتمانية، trusteeship paradigm) است که بر اساس آن اخلاق قرار است «پشت‌گرم» دین و علم و سیاست در دنیای کنونی باشد و بر این اساس انسانی نو آفریده شود. 
عبدالرحمن سبک اندیشه دشوارگوی مخصوص به خود را دارد. کتاب‌های پرسش اخلاق (سئوال الاخلاق) و گوهر دین (روح الدین) به زبان عربی در زمره‌ی آثار مهم او هستند. آنچه در ادامه می‌آید معرفی اندیشه‌های طاها عبدالرحمن بر اساس کتابی است که به تازگی به زبان انگلیسی در مورد اندیشه‌های او منتشر شده است با عنوان:  اصلاح مدرنیته، اخلاق و انسان نو در فلسفه طاها عبدالرحمان (۲۰۱۹). مشخصات کتاب به انگلیسی از این قرار است:

نویسنده کتاب پروفسور وائل حلاق (متولد ۱۹۵۵ م)، استاد حقوق اسلامی و تاریخ اندیشه اسلامی در دانشگاه کلمبیا است. چنانکه در مصاحبه با دقت توضیح داده شده، پروژه‌های فکری طاها عبدالرحمن و وائل حلاق اشتراکات زیادی دارند و همین حلاق را به نگارش اولین تک‌نگاشت به زبان انگلیسی در معرفی اندیشه‌های طاها عبدالرحمن سوق داده است.  حلاق که خود متفکری برجسته در حوزه‌ی بین المللی است عبدالرحمن را مهم‌ترین متحد فکری خود در جهان عربی-اسلامی می‌داند. این معرفی کتاب در قالب گفتگوی آنلاین محمد حصحص، دوست مترجم و پژوهشگر فلسفه سیاسی مراکشی مقیم ایتالیا، با وائل حلاق صورت گرفته و ترجمه فارسی آن با اجازه مصاحبه‌کننده منتشر می‌شود.

Kelimeler gerçekliği kaçınılmaz şekilde perdeler ve yanlış yorumlar, fakat çelişkilidir ki gerçekliği tartışmak için zorunludurlar. Friedrich Nietzsche bu sorunu dilin "yasaması" olarak tanımlar ve onu, kendisi sayesinde kelimelerin kavramlar hâline geldiği süreç olarak tarif eder; bu bağlamda kelimeler "az veya çok birbirine benzer sayısız örneğe… asla eşit olmayan ve bu yüzden tümüyle eşitsiz olan bu örneklere uymak" 1 durumundadır. Nietzsche gayet zekice, kelimeleri yaşam ve özgürlüğün engelleri olarak anlamış-tı. İnsan dili ve buna eşlik eden "hakikat" takıntımız varoluşun sahih, deneysel ve dolayımsız kavranışına set çeker. Kelimeler özgün düşünceyi ve duyu deneyimini aksatarak içsel ve dışsal gerçeklikleri bilmeyi tehir eder. Şu hâlde hakikat nedir? Nietzsche'ye göre o; "hareketli bir metaforlar, mecaz-ı mürseller güruhudur ve insanbiçimciliktir; kısacası, şiirsel ve retorik bakımından yoğunlaştırılmış, aktarılmış ve uzun süre kullanımın ardından bir halka sabit, kanonik ve bağlayıcı gibi görünen insan iliş-kileri toplamıdır. Hakikatler yanılsama olduklarını unuttuğumuz yanılsamalar-dır; eski püskü metaforlardır onlar, hissi güçlerini yitirmiş ve paralardır, kabart-maları kaybolmuş, artık para olarak değil metal olarak görülen paralar.
