Guglielmo Achille Cavellini (Brescia 1914 - 1990) costituì una delle più importanti collezioni italiane d'arte contemporanea; continuamente aggiornata ad iniziare dagli anni Cinquanta, dalle tendenze astratte europee fino  alla New York School (Kline, Tobey, Rauschenberg),  alla pop art italiana,  inglese e americana ( Warhol, Dine, Wesselmann) e agli esordi dell'Arte Povera italiana degli anni Settanta

Today randomness is seen not only as an art method, but as one of the main esthetic principles. The article dwells on the randomness as a basis for new and experimental types of art, that change canons and because of it are criticized strongly.
But, as the history of the early XX ct. shows, the recognition of new in art is the question of time. The comparative-historical analysis of such artistic forms as Avant-garde (Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Tachisme), rock-music (Punk, Hardcore), photography (Lomography) shows the possibility of seeing the randomness as one of the leading principles of XX – early XXI ct. art. Different styles and kinds of
art, often independently, have transformed spontaneity in the work into the philosophy and ideology of world-perception and self-expression. The principle of randomness
can be viewed as a concrete manifestation of the trans cultural archetype / mythologeme of Chaos. This allows us to introduce the abovementioned art forms in a much wider cultural context.

Hans Hartung (1904-1989) is regarded as one of the founders of gestural painting in Europe, a variety of expressive or lyrical abstraction, the first truly ‘international style’ to dominate art on both sides of the Atlantic in the mid-twentieth century. The adjectives ‘lyrical’ or ‘expressive’ suggest a direct, almost physical painterly approach to material, canvas and form. However, the process of organizing the studio inventory after the artist’s death revealed that for every painting, seemingly the result of a largely expressionistic and uncontrolled working  process, there was a preparatory drawing, patently contradicting the superficial appearance of the painting and the ‘expressionistic’ or ‘lyrical’ clichés attached to it. The contradiction between the stereotypes dominating the discourse and the reality behind them was known to critics of the 1950, but they wouldn’t bother about drawing the inevitable conclusion that their discourse was wrong and misleading. Even when the evidence again turned up after the artist’s death, a well-known gallery advised the foundation representing the artist’s estate to destroy the evidence in order to protect the artist’s market.
This text focuses on this strange and still not well-known aspect of the artist’s reception as a case study for art criticism’s notorious tendency to base its discourse on misleading stereotypes. It was written for the compilation Hartung – 10 Perspectives, edited by Anne Pontégnie and published by 5 Continents Editions srl. Milan in 2006.

Hans Hartung (1904-1989) est considéré comme l’un des fondateurs de la peinture gestuelle en Europe. Cette variété de l’abstraction expressionniste ou lyrique – le premier ‘style international’ á proprement parler – domina l’art des deux côtés de l’Atlantique au milieu du XXe siècle. Les termes ‘expressionniste’ ou ‘lyrique’ suggèrent une approche picturale directe, quasi physique, de la toile, du matériau ou de la forme. Or l’inventaire du fond de l’atelier après la mort de l’artiste révéla que pour chaque toile, peinte apparemment de façon peu contrôlée, il y avait un dessin préparatoire, ce qui contredit formellement les clichés ‘expressionniste’ ou ‘lyrique’ censés qualifier l’œuvre. Cette contradiction entre les clichés dominant le discours critique et la réalité ainsi masquée n’était pas inconnue de certains critiques d’art des années 1950, sans qu’ils en tirent pour autant les conséquences. Et même, lorsque l’évidence du lien entre dessins et peintures apparut après la mort de Hartung,  une prestigieuse galerie alla jusqu’à conseiller à la fondation qui gère son œuvre d’en détruire les preuves, afin de protéger le marché de l’artiste.
Ce texte traite de cet étrange aspect, encore peu connu, de la réception de l’artiste, comme une étude de cas quant à la tendance notoire de la critique d’art de baser son discours sur des stéréotypes trompeurs. Il fut écrit pour la compilation Hartung – 10 perspectives, publiée sous la direction d’Anne Pontégnie auprès de 5 Continents Editions Srl. Milan en 2006.

Perrotin’s opening exhibition in New York for 2018, Hans Hartung: A Constant Storm. Works from 1922 to 1989, featured a retrospective assessment of one of the pioneers of Lyrical Abstraction in Europe, including over 60 major works. This exhibition—which was on view from January 12 until February 18—marked the most extensive presentation of the artist’s oeuvre since 1975. Therefore, the show presented a challenge and opportunity to curator Matthieu Poirier to strategically organize works in order to chart Hartung’s artistic evolution, find core motifs across his seven-decade body of work, and properly situate his corpus in the larger history of twentieth-century abstraction—a task that is arguably more appropriate now having the critical temporal distance necessary to make such an evaluation. Three central themes united this exceptional panoply of works and served as the animating forces of the exhibition: a play with scale and positioning that absorbs the viewer; a balance between spontaneous and controlled marks or brushstrokes; and a posing and answering of the question of the role of the artist through varied applications of the graphic mark.

Artiste en transhumance, Martin Galtier habite aujourd’hui le Champsaur (Hautes-Alpes). Vivant en territoire agropastoral, tissé de fermes, de champs et de prairies pâturées par des vaches et des moutons, Martin Galtier renoue ici avec une mémoire familiale : l’histoire de son grand-père Antonin, paysan ariégeois, simple soldat de la Guerre de 14, prisonnier, militant communiste, pompier et éleveur berger à Marseille, dans la plaine de l’Huveaune. Antonin, ce grand-père tant aimé.
Ce catalogue présente une série d’œuvres sélectionnées (dessins à l’encre sur chiffons d’atelier et sur papier) pour une exposition qui a eu lieu à la Maison du berger du 12 juin 2015 au 31 mars 2016.
Cette exposition a fait suite à une résidence de Christian Martin Galtier à la Maison du berger. Lors de cette résidence, il a rencontré le grand peintre allemand Paul K. (1879-1940) en villégiature durant quelques semaines à Champoléon. Cette rencontre improbable, par delà le temps, a été racontée par Paul K. dans des courriers à son amie Polka. Ces lettres posthumes sont reproduites ici avec l’accord des épistoliers ; elles nous permettent de mieux connaître l’œuvre de Martin Galtier et sa démarche artistique.
