TFT-LCDs

—We review recent advances in quantum dot (QD)-enhanced liquid crystal displays (LCDs), including material formulation , device configuration, and system integration. For the LCD system, we first compare the color gamut difference between the commonly used Gaussian fitting method and that using real emission spectra. Next, we investigate the Helmholtz–Kohlrausch effect. Our simulation results indicate that QD-enhanced LCD appears 1.26X more efficient than organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display due to its wider color gamut. Finally, two new trends for QD-LCDs are discussed: 1) replacing conventional color filters with a QD array, and 2) emerging quantum rod (QR)-enhanced backlight. Their inherent advantages, technical challenges, and potential solutions are presented. We believe the prime time for QD-enhanced LCDs is around the corner. 6LowPAN was introduced by the IETF as a standard protocol to interconnect tiny and constrained devices across IPv6 clouds. 6LowPAN supports a QoS feature based on two priority bits. So far, little interest has been granted and this QoS feature and there are no implementations of such feature in real networks. In this paper,we evaluate the capacity to provide QoS of these priority bits in various scenarios. We show that under very heavy or very low network load, these bits have a limited effect on the delay.

This paper concerns on commercial residential application of automation technique to design and implement advanced conventional room known as smart room using Arduino UNO as the main microcontroller board .Smart room incorporates room appliances control automation wirelessly using HC-05 Bluetooth module and android application; automatic security alarm system involving buzzer; and a real time weather status display via 16x2 LCD using DHT11 sensor. The user controls all room appliances and also display temperature and humidly status on the LCD by sending numerical character from his Smartphone Bluetooth terminal to the microcontroller wirelessly, furthermore the security system works automatically upon detecting an intruder.

We studied the environmental stability of amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) with single-layer (SiO2) and bilayer (SiO2/SiNx) passivation under high-humidity (80%) storage. During the 30 days of investigation, all single-layer passivated TFTs showed negative turn-ON voltage shifts (VON), the size of which increased with storing time. The negative  VON is attributed to donor generation inside the active a-IGZO caused by the diffusion of ambient hydrogen/water molecules passing through the SiO2 passivation layer. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profile for the SiO2 passivated structures confirms that the concentration of oxygen vacancies, which is initially larger at the a-IGZO/SiO2 interface, compared with the bulk a-IGZO, decreases after 30 days of storage under high humidity. This can be explained as the passivation of oxygen vacancies by diffused hydrogen. On the other hand, all bilayer passivated TFTs showed good air stability at room temperature and high humidity (80%).

Motion picture response time (MPRT) affects the image blurs of thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays and organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays. We derive an analytical equation to correlate MPRT with the liquid crystal (LC)/OLED response time and TFT frame rate. Good agreement between our physical model and experimental results is obtained. Based on our model, we find that if the LC's response time is 2 ms or less, then its MPRT is nearly the same as that of OLED, even if OLED's response time is assumed to be 0. To achieve MPRT comparable to OLEDs, we developed an ultra-low viscosity LC mixture for the vertical alignment mode operation. The measured average gray-to-gray response time is 0.93 ms, and its MPRT at 120 Hz is 6.88 ms. In comparison , OLED's MPRT is 6.67 ms. To further shorten MPRT, we could either increase the frame rate or reduce the backlight duty ratio. Pros and cons of these approaches are discussed. Published by AIP Publishing. We demonstrate a simple method for measuring the twist elastic constant (K 22) of a nematic liquid crystal (LC). By adding some chiral dopant to an LC host, the LC directors rotate 180° in a homogeneous cell, which is known as 180° super-twisted nematic (STN) cell. By preparing two such STN cells with different chiral concentrations and measuring their Fréedericksz threshold voltages, we can obtain the K 22 and helical twisting power simultaneously. In the whole process, there is no need to measure the pitch length. Our obtained K 22 values agree well with those reported by using other methods.

Purpose – This study aims to refocus the analysis of global political economies using concepts from studies on Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) to track Taiwan's rise in the Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) industry. Taiwanese electronics firms began to outpace their competitors from Japan in TFT-LCD industry's competition from about the year 2000. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on depth interviews and analysis of secondary source material, newspaper and magazine. Findings – A time factor that helps determine advantage and/or disadvantage of high-tech industry in Japan and Taiwan. Stable organizational structure and less talent mobility in the Japanese TFT-LCD firms may well have been an advantage initially in the transformation process from US firms' experimental technologies to tacit mass production technologies, but proved to be a disadvantage in the subsequent competition with more mobile talent in Taiwanese firms eager to standardize mass production techniques. Japanese firms' rigid organizational structure could not keep pace to the market-oriented technology strategy in the global TFT-LCD industry, lost competitive advantage in a rapid pace. Social implications – VoC literature should be focused to highlight two insights. The first is the premise of institutional forms specific to national models of capitalism. Patterns of technology transfer appear critical in the innovation process, and differ markedly between Taiwan and Japan. Second, the VoC literature suggests comparative institutional advantage. Originality/value – Through the comparative analyses between Taiwanese capitalism model and Japanese counterparts, we can understand the reason and process of the rise of Taiwan in global TFT-LCD market.

We report a vertically-aligned liquid crystal display (LCD) device with submillisecond response time, high transmittance, and low operation voltage. The top substrate has a common electrode, while the bottom substrate consists of hole-patterned fringing-field-switching (FFS) pixel electrodes. A negative dielectric anisotropy LC is employed. In the voltage-on state, the LC directors are reoriented by the fringing fields surrounding the hole area and by the longitudinal and fringe fields outside the hole area. After design optimization, we are able to achieve 85% peak transmittance under crossed circular polarizers. During the relaxation process, the standing walls exert a strong restoring force, leading to submillisecond gray-to-gray response time. Moreover, this device enables high resolution density because only one thin-film transistor per pixel is needed and the bottom FFS electrode has built-in capacitor. This device is particularly attractive for the emerging virtual reality displays.

We investigated the flexoelectric effect of a fringe field switching liquid crystal (LC) cell and characterised the resultant image flicker with different LC mixtures at different frame rates. Incorporating with human eye perception of 10 observers, we found that LC mixtures with a dielectric anisotropy smaller than ~7 lead to unnoticeable image flicker at 60 frames per second. The obtained flicker sensitivity line serves as important guidelines for optimising LC materials and display devices.

The wide bandgap and highly transparent inorganic compound copper(I) thiocyanate (CuSCN) is used for the first time to fabricate p-type thin-film transistors processed from solution at room temperature. By combining CuSCN with the high-k relaxor ferroelectric polymeric dielectric P(VDF-TrFE-CFE), we demonstrate low-voltage transistors with hole mobilities on the order of 0.1 cm2 V−1 s−1. By integrating two CuSCN transistors, unipolar logic NOT gates are also demonstrated.

As East Asian capitalism undergoes a series of changes, scholars have begun to study the effects of globalization on the development and decline of East Asian local industry and society. This article is a comparative analysis of the changing trajectories of the Taiwanese and Japanese thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display industries. It explores how Taiwan introduced, through collaboration, tacit knowledge from Japan, then conveyed that knowledge to mainland China, and closes with a discussion of the risks of tacit knowledge accumulation and cross-border talent mobility. Drawing on in-depth interviews and secondary-source analysis, the author shows that tacit knowledge and expertise are offshoots of the long-term accumulation of experience and technical knowledge that cannot be presented in manuals; they spread through the flow of technical personnel. Intellectual property rights cannot protect tacit knowledge. It is extremely difficult to keep it from traveling to other countries, which poses a risk for the development of Taiwanese high-tech industries. These findings help explain the surprising ways in which global technology flows affect employment in local high-tech industries.

It is the aim of most work with graphics, photography, and video to create vivid and compelling images. Though telepresence and virtual reality are new terms, there exists a vast body of research in stereoscopic vido and other fields with similar objectives. Most of this work has appeared in patent documents or obscure publications and is rarely cited. In order to stimulate research, a number of areas of interest are briefly reviewed and accompanied by extensive bibliographies. These include single camera and dual camera stereoscopy, corn-patible 3D recording and transmission, helmet mounted displays, field sequential stereo and head and eyetracking devices.

We report high performance liquid crystal displays (LCDs), including fringe field switching (p-FFS) and in-plane switching (pIPS), with a small average dielectric constant (ε) but positive dielectric anisotropy material. Our low ε based p-FFS and pIPS LCDs offer several attractive properties, such as high transmittance, low operation voltage, fast response time (even at −20°C), which is particularly desirable for outdoor applications of mobile or wearable display devices, and suppressed flexoelectric effect. Combining these advantages with the inherent outstanding features, such as wide viewing angle, no grayscale inversion, negligible color shift, and pressure resistance, the low ε LC based p-FFS and pIPS are strong contenders for next-generation mobile displays, and high resolution and high frame rate TVs.

Keycorp is Australia’s largest payments technology service provider. The company provides independent, as well as multi-vendor payments technology to retailers, financial institutions and large corporate organisations. Bambora is Keycorp’s Swedish parent company, which in turn is owned by the Ingenico Group, a private equity-backed French provider of payment and transaction processing services with revenues of €2.6b (Ingenico Group, 2018).
In the 1990’s, Keycorp was the first company to launch a range of LCD monitors for PC’s as a new desktop technology for replacing bulky monitors using cathode ray tube (CRT) technology. As such, Keycorp had a first-mover advantage. Since then, LCD monitors have quickly dominated the market due to their compact size (small footprint), light weight, minimal flicker, non-detrimental radiation and low power consumption.
This case study deals with the introduction of a product in Keycorp’s LCD monitors business, which was to be designed from a value-for-money perspective, based on customer preferences.
Specific quantitative techniques used were factor and conjoint analyses.

We demonstrate two ultra-low viscosity liquid crystal mixtures to enable field-sequential-color wearable displays for low temperature operation, while keeping a wide color gamut. Our mixtures offer ~4X faster response time than a commercial material at 20°C and ~8X faster at −20°C. Other major attractive features include: (1) submillisecond response time at room temperature and vivid color even at −20°C without a heating device, (2) high brightness and excellent ambient contrast ratio, and (3) suppressed color breakup with 360Hz frame rate.

We develop a rigorous model to simulate an LCD's contrast ratio (CR) and viewing angle by considering the depolarization effect in thin-film transistor substrate, LC layer, color filter (CF) array, etc. To mitigate the depolarization effect, we propose a new device structure by adding a thin in-cell polarizer between LC layer and CF array. Based on the analysis using our new model, the maximum CR of a multi-domain vertical alignment (MVA) LCD can reach > 20,000:1, while for the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode it can reach > 3000:1. We also discuss other approaches to further enhance the CR. Our model is a powerful tool to analyze the CR degradation mechanism and to guide the future LCD device and material optimizations.

We propose to add a functional reflective polarizer (FRP) in the backlight unit to suppress the crosstalk between red, green and blue color filters of a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. When incorporated with a commercial two-phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (2pc-WLED), the color gamut of the LCD can be improved from 92% to 115% NTSC standard, which is comparable to the cadmium-based quantum dot (QD) backlight. If a narrow-band color filter is employed, the color gamut can be further enhanced to 135% NTSC. Our design offers an alternative approach to QDs, while keeping low cost and long lifetime. Such a simple yet efficient approach would find widespread applications for enlarging the color gamut of LCDs.

This paper aims to understand the risk of upgrading strategy by analyzing the strategic coupling between the Taiwanese flat panel display (FPD) industry and its Japanese counterpart. Strategic coupling between the Taiwanese FPD industry and Japanese firms gave a critical advantage to the Taiwanese FPD industry, yet simultaneously, Taiwanese firms were forced to become technologically dependent on Japanese firms. Cost performance production strategy, global collaboration network, and adjusting Japanese technologies in the Taiwanese FPD industry are the main development mechanism of strategic coupling between Taiwanese FPD manufacturers and Japanese firms. However, this strategic coupling also has negative effects on the Taiwanese FPD industry. Namely, it has had negative effects on industrial upgrading due to the lack of long-term human resource development and in-house technology accumulation. These findings serve as an opportunity to develop a more profound theoretical framework of the industrial upgrading strategy of local firms embedded in global value chains.

Due to the increasing popularity of cloud computing, more and more data owners are motivated to outsource their data to cloud servers for great convenience and reduced cost in data management. However, sensitive data should be encrypted before outsourcing for privacy requirements, which no longer support data utilization like keyword-based document retrieval. In this project, we present a secure multi keyword ranked search scheme over encrypted cloud data, which simultaneously supports dynamic update operations insertion and updating of documents. Specifically, We construct a special tree-based index structure and propose a "Greedy Depth-first Search" algorithm to provide efficient multi-keyword ranked search. The XeCl laser facility Hercules, delivering a maximum energy of 8 J in 160 ns FWHM, has been used to irradiate amorphous silicon (a-Si) films on glass substrate. We designed an optical homogeneizer to reshape the large cross-section of the laser beam (10 x 5) cm², in order to reach a fluence up to 0.5 J/cm² over a (13 x 1) cm² area. The beam resulted spatially homogenous within 10% (referred to peak-to-peak fluctuations). We obtained poly-silicon films with grain size ranging from 0.1 to 2 µm, depending on the laser energy density. These preliminary results show that the grain size is critically fluence-dependent when the so-called super-lateral-growth regime is approached (approximately at 0.42 J/cm² for a 50 nm-thick a-Si film), with a maximum slope of the grain size vs. energy density greater than 0.5 µm/(mJ/cm²).

We propose to use a hybrid downconverter system comprising low-cost green perovskite-polymer composite films for liquid crystal display (LCD) backlight unit (BLU) to realize wide color gamut. Recently, ultrastable, highly luminescent CH 3 NH 3 PbBr 3 (MAPbBr 3) organic-inorganic perovskite-polymer composite films have been developed. These films exhibit outstanding color quality with a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of only 18 nm and a peak wavelength of 530 nm, which makes them promising candidates as green downconverters. Two configurations to hybridize these green films with state-of-the-art red emitting downconverters, including CdSe-based quantum dots (QDs) and narrow peak phosphors, are proposed. Color and efficiency analyses indicate that the hybridization of green perovskite-polymer films with red K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ (KSF) phosphor could lead to wide color gamut coverage of nearly 90% Rec. 2020 and high total light efficiency (TLE) of around 20 lm/W while maintaining low cost.

Abstract The rise of the global economy has transformed competitive and interdependent relationships in East Asian production linkage. With the development of globalization, Japanese downstream industry, such as manufacturing and especially the consumer electronics industry, is facing fierce competition from the catch-up phenomenon in South Korean, Taiwanese, and Chinese manufacturers. Many factories for Japanese consumer electronics firms have been forced to shut down. In addition, their suppliers, upstream Japanese firms like electronic component and equipment suppliers, have lost their business in the domestic Japanese market and have experienced pressure to enter global markets. With regard to the Japanese upstream industry and Taiwanese thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) downstream firms, the Japanese electronic component and equipment suppliers have been integrated into the strategic production linkage in East Asian countries by way of responding to this transformation in competitive relationships in global TFT-LCD markets. Thus, they are increasingly abandoning Japanese clients to become the main electronic component and equipment suppliers for TFT-LCD manufacturers in Taiwan. In spite of the long-term recession in the Japanese economy and decay in the downstream industry, under the Japanese regulatory regime, Japanese upstream industry has thus far maintained its technological advantage in the global TFT-LCD markets and has continued to dominate the electronic component and equipment business for TFT-LCD manufacturers in Taiwan.

We propose a new A-film-enhanced fringe field switching (A-FFS) liquid crystal display whose required dΔn value is only λ/4, which is one-half of a conventional FFS. Fast response time can be achieved by either decreasing the cell gap (d) or choosing a low birefringence (Δn) and low-viscosity liquid crystal. The effect of dΔn mismatch between A-film and FFS cell on contrast ratio is analysed. By choosing a dispersion-matched A-film, we can obtain a reasonably high contrast ratio in the entire visible region.

We propose a new electrode configuration, called diamond-shape in-plane switching, to lower the operation voltage of polymer-stabilised blue-phase liquid crystal (BPLC) displays (BPLCDs). The electrode structure is modified from conventional protruded IPS, where the strip protrusion is changed to diamond shape. By optimising the electrode gap and diamond length, we are able to obtain peak transmittance over 75% at 15 V. It enables single thin-film transistor (TFT) driving, and more importantly, this is based on an industrially proven BPLC material. That means good long-term stability, adequate TFT charging time for high-resolution displays and sub-millisecond response time and acceptable voltage-holding ratio for field sequential displays can be achieved simultaneously. Our device design helps accelerate the emergence of the long-awaited BPLCDs.

In this paper we propose face detection and recognition system that will capable of processing images very fast while acquiring very high true positive face detection rate. Face Detection is about providing security in terms of person Identification in army area. This project aims to create one more step towards solving of this serious problem. The design is based on computer vision and embedded system application principles. This system is mainly divided into two parts. One is controller and other is face detection through MATLAB. The controller side is having a wireless modem, GSM. If criminal's face is detected in camera then GSM modem will send message of that location to authorized mobile number. For face detection, here digital cameras are used which are connected to a computer system. The computer is having database stored in which all criminals' photos are saved. If database is matched with any of the face caught by camera then signal is sent to controller.

—A fast-response fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal display using patterned common electrodes is proposed. By applying a restoring pulse voltage on common electrodes, the relaxation process of liquid crystals is expedited by the electric field. The average gray-to-gray decay time is over sevenfold faster compared with the conventional FFS mode. Index Terms—Fast response, fringe field switching (FFS), liquid crystal display (LCD).

We analyze how to realize Rec. 2020 wide color gamut with quantum dots. For photoluminescence, our simulation indicates that we are able to achieve over 97% of the Rec. 2020 standard with quantum dots by optimizing the emission spectra and redesigning the color filters. For electroluminescence, by optimizing the emission spectra of quantum dots is adequate to render over 97% of the Rec. 2020 standard. We also analyze the efficiency and angular performance of these devices, and then compare results with LCDs using green and red phosphors-based LED backlight. Our results indicate that quantum dot display is an outstanding candidate for achieving wide color gamut and high optical efficiency.
