Straniamento

La generale atmosfera di indeterminatezza che caratterizza le opere dello scrittore risulta essere un espediente da lui consapevolmente ricercato. Tale particolare forma di straniamento da "artificio" diviene vero e proprio soggetto narrativo. In particolare, oltre a portare all’estremo le potenzialità disgreganti del romanzo (in senso bachtiniano), i testi sokoloviani pongono un’importante sfida alle facoltà di orientamento del lettore, spaesato davanti a coordinate spazio-temporali,personali e metatestuali completamente scardinate.

Thinkers as diverse as Benjamin and Žižek describe Brecht's theatre as quintessentially Platonic. Needless to say, there exists a vast gap between Brecht and Plato, and yet a 'Platonic' reading of Brecht's writings proves worthwhile. Taking my cue from a few scholarly contributions, I have collected all the relevant parallels, so as to give a fuller picture than has hitherto been attempted. Both authors share a 'sociological' approach to theatre, and the analogies - even in points of detail - are remarkable, both from a 'negative' point of view (critiques to current theatre) and from a more constructive perspective (proposals for a reformed theatre). To be sure, Brecht had only a very limited acquaintance with Plato, so that issues of intertextuality may be safely ruled out. Any comparison, then, should remain a theoretical one: if Aristotle's Poetics makes an anti-Platonic move, Brecht's 'Platonism' is arguably the result of his anti-Aristotelian stance. Be that as it may, Brecht's 'Platonic' arguments are sometimes given in fuller detail than in Plato himself, whence the heuristic potential of the comparison: by way of conclusion, I propose three thought experiments, whereby Brecht's views offer a refreshing approach to some vexed questions of Platonic scholarship.

Nel presente scritto propongo, attraverso l’illustrazione di un caso di studio sulla pellicola "Grey Gardens", alcune considerazioni sull’esperienza estetica dello straniamento. Parto dall'originaria concettualizzazione šklovskijana di straniamento per poi vagliare la possibilità di dialogo fra questa e altre nozioni o esperienze letterarie; in particolare il perturbante freudiano e l'attenzione al ruolo dell'emozione all'interno del progetto genealogico foucaultiano. Secondo la metodologia del caso di studio il movimento della riflessione è dunque doppio: da un lato concentrato sull'analisi dell'oggetto prescelto, dall'altro impegnato a verificare, a partire da tale analisi, la possibilità di applicazione ed estrapolazione di nozioni riconducibili a un orizzonte concettuale più ampio e comprensivo.

La rappresentazione dello straniero può essere considerato un aspetto chiave nella percezione della società contemporanea; l’assunto è particolarmente valido per lo scrittore migrante, il quale, attraverso lo scambio e l’osservazione dell’Altro, riporta, mediante una personale esegesi della realtà, la propria trasformazione identitaria: le complesse dinamiche che soggiacciono alla motilità comportano infatti molteplici livelli interpretativi e la necessità per l’autore di indossare diverse maschere. Il presente saggio vuole esplorare la rappresentazione della ‘straniera’ e il senso di straniamento, fil rouge nel memoir familiare intitolato La straniera (2019) di Claudia Durastanti. L’autobiografia romanzata presenta la storia della famiglia Durastanti tra confini fisici e figurativi: da un lato, i limiti geografici con le migrazioni dall’Italia e i rimpatri, dall’altro i limiti esistenziali, i diversi codici linguistici e le modalità comunicative, tra mondi sonori e silenti – i genitori sono entrambi sordi e non hanno mai adottato la lingua dei segni – e le generazioni, nel rapporto madre-figlia. Codificando la quotidianità attraverso la sua percezione da ‘straniera’, Durastanti sviluppa un’interessante filosofia interpretativa rielaborando il concetto di disabilità, che si configura anch’essa come un’estraneità al corpo stesso, ma soprattutto l’idea dell’essere stranieri, che non si basa più sulla classica assenza di radici bensì sul suo opposto; è infatti l’eccesso di radici e di legami a offrire un punto d’osservazione privilegiato nella descrizione dello ‘straniero’.

This research aims at investigating the topos of love as deep and extreme passion, in opposition to social stereotypes, in two novels by two Sicilian female writers of the Nineteenth Century, Adelina (1845) by Rosina Muzio Salvo (1815-1866) and Margherita Royn (1886) by Cettina Natoli (1867-1913). In Adelina amour fou is in conflict with the patriotic needs and the moralism of the newborn middle-class society; in Margherita Royn, an overliterary, different kind of love clashes with the materialism and commercialization which dominate in late Nineteenth century. Adelina’s displacement is highlighted by the structure of the polyphonic epistolary novel, in which the protagonist’s ‘reasons of the heart’ are opposed to the opinions of all the other characters; according to a process of Verghian estrangement (Luperini, 1974), they convey a distorted picture of her passion and consider it a weird, unacceptable fact. Margherita is able to see reality only through an overly literary lens of extreme sentimentality; her isolation is manifest in the depiction of her body, consumed by an adulterous passion which contrasts with her husband’s rough physicality; overcome by jealousy, he will end up killing her.

Riassunto: A partire dalla rilettura poetica dell'ascensione al Monte Ventoso di Petrarca proposta dal poeta del Québec Michaël La Chance, nell'articolo si dà forma a uno studio comparato interdisciplinare a proposito dell'uso dello spaesamento e dello straniamento nella rappresentazione letteraria del Monte Ventoso nel corso dei secoli, analizzando contemporaneamente le ricadute e le metamorfosi dell'archetipo di Petrarca nel lavoro di La Chance. Abstract: The poet of Quebec Michaël La Chance wrote a long poem inspired to the ascent of the Mount Ventoux by Petrarch; in the article we propose an interdisciplinary, comparative study of the use of disorientation and alienation effect within the literary representation of the Mount Ventoux over the centuries. We analyse at the same time the relapses and metamorphoses of the archetype of Petrarch in the work of La Chance

The article focuses on the ways through which Russian contemporary writer Sasha Sokolov conveys a general idea of indeterminacy in his works. If defamiliarization, in Shklovsky's terms, is the basis of poetic language, in Sokolov's text this technique lies at the basis of both form and content. In this sense, Sokolov overcomes the "dictatorship" of the plot (the "What") in literature, electing the "How" as aesthetic principle able to structure and organize literary texts.

In this paper I will argue that the Aristotelean trope of enigma best exemplifies the narrative function of many Fascist characters in post-World War II Italian literature. The fascists present in novels such as Un eroe del nostro tempo by Vasco Pratolini, Il prete bello by Goffredo Parise, La luna e i falò by Cesare Pavese, all appear to be riddled surfaces which thwart the hero’s search for truth and the author’s ethical mission to provide an objective portrait of the past. Sadism, sexual perversion and ambiguity, physical deformation, form the common traits of identities which seem to escape uncomplicated categorization and definition. Fascist villains are the agents of mystery and of the fantastic within the plot, they often disrupt realism’s ambition towards a truthful account of history, as can be seen in Italo Calvino’s Ultimo viene il corvo. In this sense, their models are the heroes and femme fatale of the gothic novel or the tormented sinners of Dostoevsky’s novels. Rhetorically speaking, the fascist character is like an enigma, the trope that Aristotle in his Poetics and Rhetoric defined as closed or hidden simile that provides insight, pleasure and perspicuity to the reader by giving her/him the stimulation of an unusual combination of words and metaphors. 
Figures like the female collaborator, often a prostitute, or the sadomasochist fascist official, have an enigmatic moral and political identity that the main hero struggles to frame and decipher. Thus, antifascist authors and heroes share a similar aesthetic and phenomenological problem when called to remember and describe their political enemy. Far from being an embodiment of absolute evil, the fascist character ends up working as a mirror where the good heroes of the Resistance might unexpectedly recognize their own share of sin, thus compromising the finalization of meaning in a coherent, teleological mythical narrative of national foundation and redemption.

Straniamenti e spaesamenti a confronto nella letteratura italiana ed europea del XVIII e XIX secolo. Nella letteratura occidentale moderna lo straniamento e lo spaesamento diventano centrali grazie alle esperienze di viaggio e alle scoperte geografiche, senza pertanto limitarsi a questi ambiti. Per la definizione di straniamento ci rifacciamo alle teorizzazioni di Viktor Šklovskij in L'arte come procedimento (1917), in cui è delineato come un cambiamento prospettico, da parte del lettore, della percezione del reale. Come spaesamento intendiamo invece il procedimento per il quale un personaggio percepisce uno scarto tra spazio reale e spazio ideale. Il XVIII e il XIX secolo, fondamentali per la storia dell'Italia moderna, sono stati particolarmente importanti per l'evoluzione di questi elementi teorici in letteratura grazie agli scambi tra i paesi europei. Ad esempio lo spaesamento vissuto dal protagonista di Rosso Malpelo di Verga (1880) presenta aspetti comuni con quello esperito dal personaggio di Oliver Twist di Dickens (1837), conseguenza letteraria di una serie di cambiamenti storici. Con questa call intendiamo indagare i rapporti che intercorrono tra straniamento e spaesamento nella narrativa italiana sette e ottocentesca in relazione a quella europea coeva. Nello specifico, accettiamo interventi che analizzano le tecniche narrative-da un punto di vista strettamente teorico o narratologico-attraverso le quali un autore esprime lo straniamento. Al tempo stesso siamo interessati a riflessioni riguardanti gli ambiti tematici all'interno dei quali un personaggio prova un senso di spaesamento. Ad esempio in Madame Bovary di Flaubert (1856) possiamo leggere lo spaesamento attraverso la lente del genere, del corpo, del cambiamento sociale o del disagio psicologico. Ci sembra infine interessante capire in che modo i due elementi entrino in relazione tra loro, sia attraverso sinergie che opposizioni procedendo per assi tematici: in corrispondenza della rappresentazione dello spaesamento con quali tecniche narrative viene restituito l'effetto di straniamento? Di seguito proponiamo alcuni assi tematici di ricerca possibili ma non esaustivi: • In che modo il corpo viene percepito e rappresentato come spazio non solo privato ma anche narrativo e inter-relazionale. • Le relazioni in senso generale fra gli esseri umani e l'ambiente circostante. • Lo spostamento inteso come displacement, dal viaggio all'esplorazione passando per l'emigrazione. • In che modo le opere letterarie costituitesi attraverso la circolazione e la traduzione dei modelli creano straniamento al momento della ricezione. Gli abstract degli articoli (che non dovranno superare le 750 parole) potranno essere redatti in italiano, inglese o olandese e andranno inviati entro il 31 gennaio 2020 insieme a una breve biobibliografia di 200 parole a daniele.comberiati@univ-montp3.fr e giro.alessandra@spes.uniud.it. The article aims to show how, in the Italian cultural setting transitioning from the 1960s through the '70s, Viktor Šklovskij's theory of estrangement was read together with the works of an expert of popular culture such as Mikhail Bakhtin. Particular attention was given to tracing the role of this "cross-reading" in the project of the never-realized magazine Alì Babà (which had Italo Calvino and Gianni Celati as main promoters), based on the idea of Carnival as necessary estrangement of the cultural objects of an era. By re-proposing this cross-reading, we can identify in a specific literary device the meeting point of the two Russian critics: enumeration. While Celati and Calvino evoked as an actual condition the immense accumulation of objects, they never definitely turned their interest towards this rhetorical figure that conveys such an accumulation in verbal form. This essay intends, therefore, to lay the foundations of a research process to come about carnivalesque enumerations in Italian literature.
