This study aims to investigate the effects of dynamic assessment on improving ELT learners of English as a foreign language at a large state university. The researchers followed the pre-test—treatment—post-test procedure in the study. The test type used in the assessment procedures was 'Retelling Story Test' type in which learners were provided with authentic news stories and expected to narrate the event in the story. The study involves both quantitative and qualitative data analysis. The statistical data were analyzed by Mann Whitney U-Test and Wilcoxon Sign Test. As for the qualitative data, responses to a student evaluation form were analyzed at the end of the whole procedure. The researchers found significance in the performances of control and experiment groups after the treatment program implemented for the latter group. While Inging SPAFF may sound pretty strange to you (even foreign and un-fluent) as you begin this chapter, I hope to show you that it offers familiar concepts that can inform us about fluencing. I also call upon your good will and tolerance to allow my gerundizing and acronymizing of many conventional nouns. The ‘inging’ of nouns helps us remember that these are indeed developmental processes and not things. Talking about them as simple nouns sometimes clouds over the ‘continual becoming’ that they go through in our minds. We continually add accumulated meanings to words from our contexts like an ever-upgrading corpus database. Dweck (2000) has found that some people have an entity theory (we are good or bad learners), in contrast to incremental theories (we can try and learn and change continually, i.e. effort makes us different). Entity theories often box us into a static way of looking at others and ourselves (e.g. ‘I’m just a test score’) rather than seeing people as continually developing in changing worlds. Our daily language usage also entifies our world to a great extent when we speak of processes as nouns. (Some call this nominalization, ironically using a noun to entify the process of nominalizing.) While I seek to switch to a more inging way of expressing myself, I hope you will allow, and notice, my inconsistencies (inconsistencing) at times.

The destruction of images is a process that often produces a new imaginary, a visual spectacle in itself. Even after the original image has been obliterated, its absence can create its own powerful aesthetic that survives centuries. The article focuses on two historical case studies: the iconoclasm in Zurich in the 1520s and the National Socialist attack on so-called degenerate art. Through these, it aims to show how destruction can yield a total work of art through a carefully planned, even scripted, process that is far removed from the «lunatic running around with a sledgehammer» stereotype. It argues that many attacks on images are characterised by transformation, mysticism and performativity, during which a careful oscillation between absence and presence plays an important role. Ultimately, this contribution strives to create a new understanding of destructions of images through the frame of the Gesamtkunstwerk. ABSTRACT This paper presents the findings of an interview study (phase one of a three-phase doctoral research project) that attempted to establish practitioners’ and parents’ views of why parent–child group music making activities are offered in interdisciplinary Children's Centres in England for the 0–3 years age range. These settings are community hubs where a range of services is available for families with children under five. The responses of individual parents and practitioners (total 20) to a standardised interview schedule gave rise to eight main themes: social, emotional, learning, teaching, parenting, musical, links-to-home, and organisational. Practitioners emphasised the learning and development benefits, whereas parents were more concerned about the social and emotional reasons for attending music groups. Practitioners and parents both emphasised the emotional benefits that resulted from participating in musical activities. These findings suggest that socialisation may be multi-dimensional in the music group: between parent and child and amongst the wider group. Practitioners’ knowledge of the benefits of music may not necessarily lead to appropriate pedagogical musical approaches and there are questions raised about musical ‘culture’ and links to and from home.

This study investigates learning at an IT help desk, a work practice that has not yet been given much research attention despite its ubiquity and importance in many areas of society. Our analytic attention is focused on semiotic remediation in a locally arranged activity for learning. Through video observations of 46 cases we have analysed how documentary practices in the everyday problem- solving of cases are reused for sustaining the competence of the team and for enhancing the quality of their work. The analysis illuminates, in detail, the material, discursive and interactional means by which daily documentation of work is re-visited for learning purposes.

This chapter introduces the amenity migrants and describes the development of their movement into a societal phenomenon, and also the knowledge about this phenomenon, focusing on its most current significant manifestation - in mountain areas of the world. The chapter then outlines the key motivators and facilitators of amenity migration as well as the cultural, economic and biophysical effects of amenity migration and the little being done in response in the public sector. The chapter concludes with suggested strategic means for managing amenity migration.

El presente trabajo se deriva de una investigacion mas amplia interesada en explorar y comprender los diversos factores que inciden en la reprobacion academica en la Educacion Superior. El interes de este texto radica en la realizacion de un analisis interpretativo-cualitativo en el contexto de Iberoamerica sobre reprobacion academica. Se analizaron 10 fuentes empiricas que estudian la reprobacion academica en la universidad. El analisis muestra que los estudios cualitativos que abordan la reprobacion academica en las universidades de Latinoamerica son incipientes. Se sugiere que las futuras investigaciones realicen analisis integrales que abarquen tanto las variables socioculturales-cualitativas como cuantitativas.

The purpose of this study was to describe and understand the range of outcomes of class visits to natural history museums. The theoretical framework is based on the multifaceted process of learning in free choice learning environments, and emphasizes the unique and individual learning experience in museum settings. The study’s significance is in highlighting several possible cognitive as well as non-cognitive learning effects in museums class visits, by providing the student’s point of view. Data was collected by semi-structured interviews with 50 students in grades 6–8 on the day following the visit. We present evidence that students expressed several learning outcomes, connected directly and indirectly to the scientific content of the visit. Content oriented outcomes included acquiring scientific knowledge and making connections to prior knowledge; social oriented outcomes were identified in students’ statements regarding communicating knowledge and social aspects of learning; and interest oriented outcomes were evidenced by students’ expressions about emotions, interest and curiosity. The aggregate data addressed the common outcomes and the impact of class visits to natural history museums in the short term. Comparisons between two types of museums show significant differences in several aspects, regarding the exhibit and/or the activity type. Practical ideas for structuring the ultimate experience are included.

This article presents part of a five-year Australian study, the purpose of which was to look at learning singing in a pedagogical environment designed using sociocultural theory. The classroom environment was transformed over 5 years in consultation with other staff members and used the reflective journals that students wrote during that time as a way of refining and changing the design. Themes emerging from the journals were analysed to inform changes to the design. One of the main themes to emerge was student reflections about the scientific concepts they were taught and the ways the concepts were introduced. These reflections became the basis for the discussion in this paper. The study demonstrated that the students' acquisition of scientific concepts of singing affected both their singing performance and their ability to learn in a positive way. This manifesto, discussed by 20 scholars, representing diverse lines of creativity research, marks a conceptual shift within the field. Socio-cultural approaches have made substantial contributions to the concept of creativity over recent decades and today can provide a set of propositions to guide our understanding of past research and to generate new directions of inquiry and practice. These propositions are urgently needed in response to the transition from the Information Society to the Post-Information Society. Through the propositions outlined here, we aim to build common ground and invite the community of creativity researchers and practitioners to reflect up, study, and cultivate creativity as a socio-cultural phenomenon.
