Sexwork

Nigerianske sexarbejdsmigranter stifter ofte gæld til ’sponsorer’ og madams for at kunne migrere til Europa. Denne artikel belyser den komplekse rolle, som gæld spiller i sexarbejdsmigration og menneskehandel, og argumenterer for, at vi konceptuelt bedre kan forstå disse migrationssystemer som gældsbundet arbejdskraft.

This article reflects on insights gathered from doing feminist research during my doctoral studies in international development. My research focused on the lives of women formerly and currently in sex work in Eastern India, and their experiences and resistance of everyday violence. I argue that the adoption of a life-history interviewing method created possibilities to move away from standard topics associated with sex work, and allowed women in sex work to discuss the dynamism and fluidity within their lives, within, before, and after sex work. I also explore how this method enabled the theme of koshto (pain) to emerge which challenges the framing of violence in sex work as exceptional. I argue that women in sex work need to feel heard and acknowledged within feminist research, not simply as subjects of knowledge gathering or to inform development discourses and interventions, but as human beings with dynamic personhoods. Finally, I share lessons learnt which can be useful to future feminist researchers researching sex work, within a current environment of ideologically polarised discussions on victimhood and agency in sex work.

Der Beitrag beleuchtet das Feld der Prostitutions- und Sexarbeitsforschung. Der Ausgangspunkt ist hierbei die Heterogenität des Forschungsfeldes, das durch diverse Zugänge und kontroverse Sichtweisen gekennzeichnet ist. Der Beitrag nimmt eine politik- und sozialwissenschaftliche Perspektive der Problematisierung ein, die danach fragt, wie Prostitution und Sexarbeit zum Gegenstand von
politischer Regulierung gemacht werden und welche intersektional operierenden Macht- und Regierungstechniken hierbei eingesetzt werden. Der Beitrag arbeitet mit einem breiten Verständnis von Intersektionalität als Forschungsperspektive, Reflexionswerkzeug, politische Intervention sowie als Paradox von Differenz und Gleichheit.

Ce rapport de recherche vise à évaluer les besoins locaux d’intervention pour mieux répondre aux besoins multiples des femmes ayant un vécu dans la prostitution. Les objectifs sont : 1. fournir une évaluation des besoins locaux d’intervention; 2. développer des recommandations pour de meilleures pratiques dans le but de mieux répondre aux besoins des femmes ayant un vécu dans la prostitution et 3. permettre aux acteurs-clés de cerner les lacunes et priorités en lien avec la prostitution des femmes sur le territoire de Ville de Saguenay et de la MRC du Fjord du Saguenay. Trois groupes de participants ont été sollicités pour collaborer à l’étude : les intervenants provenant d’organismes sur le territoire ciblé, des femmes ayant un vécu en lien avec la prostitution et des intervenants provenant d’organismes à l’extérieur de la région.

Ce mémoire cherche à mettre en lumière les similitudes et les différences dans les structures argumentaires au sujet du travail du sexe/prostitution et sur le foulard islamique quant aux conceptions de l'autonomie mobilisées. Bien que l'autonomie ne soit pas le seul élément de fond dans ces débats, il semble être un indicateur possible des clivages conceptuels entre les différentes positions adoptées pour chacun des débats. Le matériel exploité est celui du corpus des mémoires déposés dans le cadre de consultations sur le projet de loi C-36 (au fédéral) et sur le projet de Charte de valeurs québécoises (au provincial). C'est à l'aide d'une grille d'analyse de contenu, qui décline le concept d'autonomie en deux différents axes, interne-externe et neutre-moral, que sont passés au peigne fin les deux ensembles de mémoires. Les conclusions pointent vers une impasse conceptuelle entre les différentes positions (pour ou contre une législation sur le foulard islamique et abolitionnistes ou pro-travail du sexe). Ainsi, la recherche indique aussi que l'autonomie serait un concept à géométrie variable qui s'adapte en fonction des débats, mais surtout selon les positions défendues. L'auteure y voit un risque d'en faire un concept à géométrie maniable qui devient un instrument justifiant les positions adoptées plutôt qu'un de leurs fondements.

This essay is concerned with the image of victim-hood and the stigma attached to sex workers and their work. The abolitionist rhetoric through which prostitution is constructed is deeply rooted in a false and misleading discourse that claims to know more about prostitution than sex workers themselves do (Margot St. James in Kesler 2002: 220). As much as it is im- portant to talk about consent issues, exploitative pimps, the risk of violence and rape, sex workers’ rights have to be addressed using a different rhetoric, one that shows respect for their agency and recognizes the status of their work. By comparing a recent Italian criminal case to abolitionist discourses, this essay seeks to demystify the rhetoric of victim-hood deployed to criminalize the sex industry and to silence and marginalize sex workers.

Prostitution is a matter of men too. And while there is a considerable amount of work done about the commodification of bodies out of heterosexual contexts, males who identify themselves as only heterosexual have been ignored. This dissertation analyses how the commodification of heterosexual male bodies is observed in a region with ‘conservative’ sexuality morals, regulated heteronormative female brothels, and migration crossings. Departing from the understanding of Tuxtla Gutiérrez (Mexico) as part of the South-Beast borderland, this work studies how illegality can create double tinted windows that render the activity invisible. Two spaces were explored to analyze the configurations of the men as providers in the sex industry: the cyberspace and the so-called ‘gay- friendly’ nightclubs of the city. With different configurations, these spaces confirm the existence of female customers who pay for sexual services and heterosexual man who offer such services. Since sex intercourse is deemed to be within intimate, romantic and solid relationships, commercial sex is stigmatized. However, the exchange of money for sex is far from simplistic but rather implies a variety of configurations that play a role; for instance, moral conventions and masculinity expectations. Being men implies dealing with a plethora of assumptions and expectations on masculinit(ies). This work describes four angles to study the meaning of men as men: the aesthetics of a male body, the defense of self-heteronormativity, the notions of romanticism, and the compliance with sexual performance as guiding points for performing manhood. Given the fact that the commodification of heterosexual male bodies has been very little explored, this dissertation concludes that more contributions would bring a more detailed panorama of the phenomenon.


La prostitución es una cuestión de hombres también. Y mientras existe una cantidad considerable de trabajos sobre la mercantilización de cuerpos fuera de contextos heterosexuales, los hombres que se identifican a sí mismos como solo heterosexuales han sido ignorados. Esta tesis analiza cómo se da la mercantilización de cuerpos masculinos heterosexuales en una región de moralidad sexual "conservadora”, de burdeles regulados femeninos heteronormativos, y de cruces migratorios. Partiendo del entender a Tuxtla Gutiérrez (México) como parte de la frontera Sur-Bestia, este trabajo estudia cómo la ilegalidad puede crear ventanas doblemente polarizadas que hacen que la actividad sea invisible. Se exploraron dos espacios para analizar las configuraciones de los hombres como proveedores en la industria del sexo: el ciberespacio y los llamados clubes nocturnos "gay-friendly" de la ciudad. Con diferentes configuraciones, estos espacios confirman la existencia de clientes mujeres que pagan por servicios sexuales y hombres heterosexuales que ofrecen dichos servicios. Dado que las relaciones sexuales se consideran dentro de relaciones íntimas, románticas y sólidas, el sexo comercial se estigmatiza. Sin embargo, el intercambio de dinero por sexo está lejos de ser simplista, sino que implica una variedad de configuraciones que desempeñan un papel; por ejemplo, las convenciones morales y las expectativas de masculinidad. El Ser-hombres implica lidiar con una gran cantidad de suposiciones y expectativas sobre las masculinidad(es). Este trabajo describe cuatro ángulos a partir de los cuales se estudia el significado de los hombres como hombres: la estética de un cuerpo masculino, la defensa de la auto-heteronormatividad, las nociones de romanticismo y el cumplimiento del desempeño sexual como puntos de guía para performar la virilidad. Dado que la mercantilización de cuerpos masculinos heterosexuales se ha explorado muy poco, esta tesis concluye que más contribuciones traerían un panorama más detallado del fenómeno.

O termo trabalho sexual é usado neste artigo para falar de pessoas que recebem benefícios ou apoios por terem atos sexuais. Através de uma abordagem interseccional focada nos conceitos de trabalho e de sexualidade, apoiada teoricamente nas tensões entre teoria queer e marxismo procura-se indagar em que medida a prostituição exprime a vivência da sexualidade humana enquanto atividade que representa uma forma de trabalho. O artigo seguirá uma linha argumentativa que procura não apenas afirmar que a prostituição é trabalho, mas também localizá-la no contexto de outras formas de trabalho sexual, indo de encontro ao que Gayle Rubin (1993) chamou de “economia política do sexo”, ou seja, como o sistema sexo/género transforma a identidade biológica em produtos da atividade humana.

O presente artigo antecede pesquisa densa acerca do "submundo" da prostituição, sob a óptica dos direitos fundamentais e a sua concreção. Analisou-se a relativização da dignidade humana pela negação àquelas pessoas que se prosti-tuem do direito ao trabalho, bem como a sua condição de invisibilidade e mazela social. Destacou-se, ainda, por meio da análise dos direitos sexuais, que envolvem a liberdade, a indissolubilidade do "amálgama normativo" direito, moral e religião, demonstrando, assim, a necessidade premente de regulação da atividade como forma de se destinar a àquelas pessoas que se prostituem igual respeito e consideração. Auf der Grundlage der Argumentationen der deutschen und italienischen Prostituiertenbewegungen Hurenbewegung und Lucciole zeigt der Artikel Widersprüche und Folgen des Sprechens über den Körper der Sexarbeiterin in den1980er- und 1990er-Jahren auf und wie dieser sozial und politisch instrumentalisiert wurde. Zunächst wird die Entwicklung der Prostituiertenbewegungen skizziert. Im Anschluss wird aus Sicht der beiden Prostituiertenbewegungen beschrieben, wie politisch und sozial mit dem „anderen“ Körper – dem der Sexarbeiterin – in dieser Zeit umgegangen wurde. Dabei werden drei Aspekte thematisiert: die räumliche Verdrängung von Sexarbeiterinnen, das Erleben von physischer Gewalt sowie der Umgang mit Geschlechtskrankheiten und Aids.

ABSTRACT: Construction and Function of the “Other” Body. Displacement, Violence, and Control from the Perspective of the German and Italian Prostitute’s Movements in the 1980s and 1990s
Based on the reasoning of the German and the Italian prostitute’s movements Hurenbewegung and Lucciole, this article shows contradictions and consequences of talking about the sex worker’s body in the 1980s and 1990s and how it has been socially and politically instrumentalised. First, I will give a broad outline of the development of the prostitute’s movements. After this I will describe, from the perspective of both movements, how the “other” body—the sex worker’s body—was socially and politically treated in the research period. I draw particular attention to three aspects: the spatial displacement of sex workers, the experience of physical violence, and dealing with sexually transmitted diseases and Aids.
