Service Oriented Computing

We introduce a logical verification methodology for checking behavioral properties of service-oriented computing systems. Service properties are described by means of SocL, a branching-time temporal logic that we have specifically designed for expressing in an effective way distinctive aspects of services, such as, acceptance of a request, provision of a response, correlation among service requests and responses, etc. Our approach allows service properties to be expressed in such a way that they can be independent of service domains and specifications. We show an instantiation of our general methodology that uses the formal language COWS to conveniently specify services and the expressly developed software tool CMC to assist the user in the task of verifying SocL formulas over service specifications. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our methodology by means of the specification and analysis of a case study in the automotive domain.

Service Oriented Computing and its most famous implementation technology Web Services (WS) are becoming an important enabler of networked business models. Discovery mechanisms are a critical factor to the overall utility of Web Services. So far, discovery mechanisms based on the UDDI standard rely on many centralized and area-specific directories, which poses information stress problems such as performance bottlenecks and fault tolerance. In this context, decentralized approaches based on Peer to Peer overlay networks have been proposed by many researchers as a solution. In this paper, we propose a new structured P2P overlay network infrastructure designed for Web Services Discovery. We present theoretical analysis backed up by experimental results, showing that the proposed solution outperforms popular decentralized infrastructures for web discovery, Chord (and some of its successors), BATON (and it’s successor) and Skip-Graphs.

The importance and benefits of Business Process Management (BPM) for organizations are nowadays broadly recognized, as not only the business area but also the information technology one are embracing and adopting the paradigm. The implementation of business processes as services helps in reducing the gap between these two areas, easing the communication and understanding of business needs. Although there is a general agreement on the benefits of the joint application of these two paradigms, some issues still need to be addressed; being a key one the automatic generation of services from business process models. In this article, we present MINERVA framework which applies Model Driven Development (MDD) and Service Oriented Computing (SOC) paradigms to business processes for the continuous business process improvement in organizations, supporting the different stages defined in the business process life cycle from modeling to evaluation of its execution.

Service Oriented architecture is a methodology which gives the brief idea about the services that how the services can help to the organization which are independent with each other. One organization can take advantageous of these services without developing same services which is already available in other organization after a small agreement between two parties. It saves much time and money as well as application will also be ready soon and users can use it. Cloud Computing is the latest technology which is more popular in the field of IT and It is the first choice of Information Technology department which has huge demand of the many organizations. It is form of the internet and the best thing of the cloud is that each data will be on cloud and can be accessed from anywhere. Many companies are providing cloud service to users which are cheap in comparison to external disk storage and also more secure. Some big companies are providing these services to small organizations which need cloud services. Service-oriented applications are frequently used in highly dynamic contexts: ser- vice compositions may change dynamically, in particular, because new services are discovered at runtime. Moreover, subtyping has recently been identified as a strong requirement for service dis- covery. Correctness guarantees over service compositions, provided in particular by type systems, are highly desirable in this context. However, while service oriented applications can be built using various technologies and protocols, none of them provides decent support ensuring that well-typed services cannot go wrong. Cloud consumers are hesitant in choosing an appropriate cloud service as they are under the assumption that clouds are not safe for their data and operations. This is due to the presence of a trust gap between cloud service consumers and cloud service providers (CSP) as well as a lack of understanding among consumers about what security and privacy (S&P) attributes best fit their requirements. In this paper, we propose a framework to assist consumers in making educated decisions when shopping for cloud S&P . First, the framework illustrates a list of potential S&P issues and recommends evaluative S&P attributes. Second, it enables consumers to assess the degree of security in two or more cloud services against the recommended attributes. Third, it enables consumers to compare their assessments using various instructive graphs. The proposed framework improves S&P of clouds by following a scenario-based and a stakeholder-oriented approach to enable consumers to comprehend their interaction with the cloud for better security. With this tool, we aim to raise the bar for security awareness in cloud computing (CC) and also form the basis for cloud S&P metrics against a standard benchmark in the future.

Modern enterprise consists of complicate business processes and systems. The Enterprise Service-Oriented Architecture (ESOA) becomes an important architectural style that defines the principles for coping with the complexity of designing and implementing business systems. This paper classifies ESOA styles to six substyles and proposes a generic and abstract model for ESOA styles. The model consists of seven sets: services, service consumers, service data, infrastructure, processes, management and quality attributes. This paper formally defines each set and their relationships in ESOA style model, and discusses the roles of these sets. The model can be applied to specify various ESOA styles. As case studies, the definition of instance of ESOA style is applied to analyze and evaluate a Java component-based ESOA-style architecture and several other ESOA-style architectures. Finally, this paper concludes by comparing the proposed model with related ESOA models.

—Sustainable urban mobility is an important dimension in a Smart City, and one of the key issues for city sustainability. However, innovative and often costly mobility policies and solutions introduced by cities are liable to fail, if not combined with initiatives aimed at increasing the awareness of citizens, and promoting their behavioural change. This paper explores the potential of gamification mechanisms to incentivize voluntary behavioural changes towards sustainable mobility solutions. We present a service-based gamification framework, developed within the STREETLIFE EU Project, which can be used to develop games on top of existing services and systems within a Smart City, and discuss the empirical findings of an experiment conducted in the city of Rovereto on the effectiveness of gamification to promote sustainable urban mobility.

In this paper we have proposed a new comprehensive framework for web service discovery and ranking. There are activities to be taken regarding the process of our proposed framework for ranking quality web services. Using CPM method the emphasis will lay on the trade-off between the cost of the framework to be implemented and its overall completion time. In other hand, by applying PERT techniques we will specify the completion of the framework activities in the shortest possible time. The deployment of similar or same web services into dedicated repositories (or registries) for the end-users to discover and select them has significantly increased lately, which has led to a new problem of choosing a suitable web service for the requester based on their needs and expectations. In view of this challenge, a QoS-based method for web service ranking is proposed in this paper. To achieve desired selection of a quality service, it is necessary to produce a framework that enables evaluation of a web service quality based on factors in terms of attributes, in addition to their level of importance based on the opinion of skilled engineers of Service Oriented Computing. Based on the proposed factors, the service providers can improve qualities of their web services, whilst the requester will have a proper list of ranking.

With the explosive growth of the number of services published over the Internet, it is difficult to select satisfactory web services among the candidate web services which provide similar functionalities. Quality of Service (QoS) is considered as the most important non-functional criterion for service selection. But this criterion is no longer considered as the only criterion to rank web services, satisfying user's preferences. The similarity measure (outputs-inputs similarity) between concepts based on ontology in an interconnected network of semantic Web services involved in a composition can be used as a distinguishing criterion to estimate the semantic quality of selected services for the composite service. Coupling the semantic similarity as the functional aspect and quality of services allows us to further constrain and select services for the valid composite services. In this paper, we present an overall service selection and ranking framework which firstly classify candidate web services to different QoS levels respect to user's QoS requirements and preferences with an Associative Classification algorithm and then rank the most qualified candidate services based on their functional quality through semantic matching. The experimental results show that proposed framework can satisfy service requesters' non-functional requirements.

Modern enterprise applications and systems are characterized by complex underlying software structures, constantly evolving feature sets, and frequent changes in the data on which they operate. The dynamic nature of these applications and systems poses substantial challenges to their use and management, suggesting the need for automated solutions. This paper considers a specific set of dynamic changes, large data updates that reflect changes in the current state of the business, where the frequency of such updates can be multiple times per day. The paper then presents techniques and their middleware implementation for automatically managing requests streams directed at server applications subjected to dynamic data updates, the goal being to improve application reliability in face of evolving feature sets and business data. These techniques (1) automatically detect input patterns that lead to performance degradation or failures and then (2) use these detections to trigger application-specific methods that control input patterns to avoid or at least, defer such undesirable phenomena. Lab experiments using actual traces from Worldspan show a 16% decrease in frequency of server restarts when using these techniques, at negligible costs in additional overheads and within delays suitable for the rates of changes experienced by this application.

Today networks offer few communication services provided by their associated protocols for communicating on the network. In the future, it is expected that networks will offer a large number of different communication services. With so many services available, determining which service to select and use will become much more difficult. Here we propose a description schema including an ontology for describing and selecting communication services. For service selection a human decision making process called Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is utilized which is specially adapted and extended for automatic processing.
