Serbian historiography

In the context of the development of the world and the Serbian historiography, the paper discusses Čedomir Popov’s historical trilogy dedicated to the history of Europe „the long 19th century”. The author analyzes contemporary research approaches to history of this historical epoch, theoretical and methodological assumptions which provide the basis for the interpretation of the European 19th century history propounded by Popov in his synthesis Gradjanska
Evropa (Bourgeois Europe), as well as its place in the history of the Serbian historiography. The paper points to the innovative combination of the postulates of traditional and new history
which Popov applied in the interpretation of the history of Europe in the 19th century, underlining the significance of the influences of Marxist historiography, British social history,
French Annals School, as well as Pierre Renouvin’s concept of the history of international relations.

Апстракт: Рад представља историјат развоја Катедре за историју српског народа у новом веку, у оквиру Одељења за историју Филозофског факултета Универзитета у Београду. У том смислу, пратићемо њену историју од зачетака у оквиру Лицеја, преко Велике школе, а затим у оквиру Филозофског факултета Београдског универзитета. Пошто катедре у почетку нису биле јасно диференциране, неопходно је осврнути се укратко и на време оснивања катедри из којих ће проистећи данашње Одељење за историју. Посебно ћемо пратити развој предмета и катедри које су биле посвећене историји српског народа и народа Југославије, из којих ће проистећи и сама Катедра за историју српског народа у новом веку, те њихову заступљеност у настави.

Апстракт: У раду се, у светлости новог тумачења да је у питању плод хуманистичке историографије, а не аутентичан средњовековни спис, истражује порекло података у тзв. Летопису попа Дукљанина кроз дела дубровачке хуманистичке историографије, почев од Лудовика Цријевића Туберона, који се први позива на "писца Дукљанина", до Мавра Орбина, који први објављује наводни текст "Дукљаниновог" списа на италијанском. Кључне речи: Летопис попа Дукљанина, дубровачка историографија, Лудовик Цријевић Туберон, Мавро Орбин, Илија Цријевић, Никола Рањина, Јаков Лукаревић, Константин Порфирогенит.
Abstract: In the light of the new interpretation that the so-called Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea is a product of humanist historiography, rather than an authentic medieval source, the origin of its data is examined through the works of Ragusan humanist historiography, starting from Ludovicus Cerva Tubero, who first referred to the "author Diocleas", up to Mauro Orbin, who first published the purported text of the work of "Diocleas" in Italian.

The paper presents a medieval history in the territory of contemporary Vojvodina through the articles published in the (Herald) Journal of the Historical Society of Novi Sad from 1928 to 1940. A significant part of the paper was dedicated to the issues of historical geography. The historical
borders of Srem were determined, and a period of forming County of Mačva as an administrative region of the Hungarian kingdom. The church history of Srem was presented from early Middle Ages to the first half of the fifteenth century. Toponymic analyses showed various historical influences in Vojvodina. Slavic, Hungarian and Turkish influence was evident in the toponyms of this region. The settling of Serbs in the southern Hungary was
conditioned by the Turkish invasions in the Balkans. The church organization existed in Sirmium for the longest period of time, as witnessed by the influence diocese of Srem. In a confessional sense, Hungary was diverse. Besides the majority of Catholics who lived in it, there were Orthodox Serbs, Hussites and Bogomils. A fact that the Catholic Church worked on religious unification of the Kingdom of Hungary was proven by the work of the inquisitors in the territory where Catholics lived mixed with other confessions, primarily in Srem. It began in the early fifteenth century, and it lived through its full force at the end of the century.
Serbs were settled under the leadership of their despots and feudal lords. Serbs had influence on the increasing military and economic power of the Kingdom of Hungary. They settled in Srem, Banat, and Bačka to a lesser extent. The paper presents a brief description of the history of medieval cities Bač and Bečej. In addition to the analysis of the articles published in the Journal, there is mentioned a recent literature related to the medieval history of Vojvodina.

У Србији са краја 20. и почетка 21. века, у оквиру историјске науке развиле су се две идеолошке парадигме кроз чије оквире се промишља, истражује и објашњава новија и савремена историје Срба и Србије. Нарочито Други светски рат, распад Југославије и ратови који су уследили у периоду од 1991. до 2001. године. [...] Последњих месеци, али и година, једна од централних тема спорења између представника две владајуће парадигме јесте питање Холокауста у Србији. Са једне стране, Бојан Димитријевић покушава да увери научну и лаичку јавност у невиност квислинга, генерала Милана Недића, док Дубравка Стојановић указује не само на његову одговорност и саучесништво у уништавању јеврејске заједнице уже Србије и Баната, већ и на чињеницу да је Србија била прва земља очишћена од Јевреја.

Статья содержит краткую биографию Тибора Живковича, а также характеризует основные сферы научной деятельности этого сербского медиевиста. ******* The obituary article of Tibor Živković (11.03.1966 – 26. 03.2013), a Serbian historian and specialist in the medieval history of Serbia, the South Slavs and Byzantium. The article presents a short biography of Tibor Živković and gives a general characteristics of his activities in the field of medieval history.

This essay analyzes Čedomir Popov's understanding of historical theory and methodology in the context of the development of Serbian and European historiography during the second half of the 20th century. Drawing upon the Marxist approach to history, Popov accepted some of the most important concepts of the contemporary French historiography (especially the Pierre Renouvin's approach to the studies of the history of international relations as well as the concept of the histoire totale of the famous Annales school, ) which enabled him to take his own theoretical and methodological standpoint. Its distinctive features could be best seen in his understanding of the subject of historical studies, the character and function of historical sources, the necessity of historical synthesis, the objectivity question, and the mutual relation between historiography and other forms of scholarly knowledge  as well as the social function of historiography and the historical consciousness built on it.
