moreLa correspondance de Fronton, et plus particulièrement les lettres qu’il échangea avec son disciple, l’empereur Marc-Aurèle, offrent un point de vue idéal pour comprendre la façon dont la langue et la culture grecques étaient utilisées dans l’entourage de l’empereur, et, plus généralement, pour observer différentes facettes du bilinguisme gréco-latin au IIème siècle de notre ère.
Pourquoi Fronton, dans une correspondance majoritairement écrite en latin, écrit-il parfois en grec? Le choix de langue est-il fonction du destinataire ? du sujet de la lettre ? Et quelles sont les raisons qui, dans la trame même d’une lettre en latin, peuvent motiver l’emprunt de quelques mots ou d’une formule en grec ? Cette question permet d’aborder plus précisément le statut de la langue grecque dans la culture romaine et de noter, parmi d’autres usages, le recours à un grec « technique », à distinguer par exemple du grec des citations. Nous nous demanderons aussi quel est l’effet produit par ce mélange linguistique. La « bigarrure » (image frontonienne) induite par l’usage conjoint du grec et du latin apparaît-elle plutôt comme une qualité ou comme un défaut aux yeux de celui qui passait pour l’un des meilleurs critiques littéraires de son temps ? Enfin, cette correspondance pose la question du rapport établi par Fronton entre le grec et la pratique philosophique. Ses considérations sur le pallium, vêtement du philosophe, ou sur le loisir associé à la culture grecque, dessinent les contours d’une Grèce imaginaire : dans quelle mesure cet imaginaire témoigne-t-il d’une vision pérenne et idéalisée de « la Grèce des Romains » ?
English abstract: The letters of Fronto, and the corresponance with his pupil, the emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, offer a fascinating window on the use of Greek language and culture in the circle of the prince. They can be used, more generally, to observe various aspects of Graeco-Latin bilingualism in the Second Century A.D.
This paper will first focus on Fronto’s remarks about his own use of Greek language. His own insistence on his “poor Greek” enables him to affirm the specificity of his identity as a Roman citizen born in Africa. Despite this obvious and emphatic lack of proficiency in Greek, Fronto sometimes writes in Greek in a correspondence mainly written in Latin. What can explain this language choice ? Is it function of the addressee? Does it depend on the subject of the letter? And how does Fronto, in the framework of a Latin letter, justify the occasional loan of a Greek word or formula? With this question, the status of the Greek language in Roman imperial culture will be approached more precisely, particularly, the recourse to “technical” Greek referring to rhetorical categories (a technical use that must be distinguished from quotations in Greek).
I will then examine what sort of stylistic effect is produced by this linguistic mixture: is the “medley of colours” (a Frontonian image) induced by the mixture of Greek and Latin languages appreciated as a quality by one of the most famous literary critics of the second century A.D. ? or is it rather seen as a stylistic defect ?
Finally this paper intends to focus on the link drawn up by Fronto between the Greek language and philosophical practice. His considerations on philostorgia, a Greek type of friendliness, or on the "leisure" associated with Greek culture, allows him to draw the outlines of an imaginary Greece. Up to what point does this imaginary construction give evidence for a perennial and idealized vision of the “Greece of the Romans”?
