Pour le Centanaire de la mort d'Auguste Rodin, le second volet de "Rodin - L'Onde de choc" est l'occasion de poursuivre les réflexions et les échanges qui ont animé le colloque organisé au Grand Palais en mars 2016.
"Dans cette histoire riche de rencontres nous croiserons des personnalités attendues comme Michel-Ange, Brancusi ou encore l'helléniste Mario Meunier, et d'autres beaucoup moins, comme Gaston Bachelard et Günther Anders qui, sensibles à l'art de Rodin, ont publié leurs réflexions sur le sculpteur."

Questo articolo trae spunto dalla recente pubblicazione del mio libro Camille Claudel, edito dalla casa editrice L'Asino d'Oro, e dai numerosi incontri che continuano ad arricchire la mia ricerca su questa scultrice, artista e donna, tra cui la lectio tenuta presso il teatro Vittoria di Roma il 21 novembre 2014.

The exhibitions held at the Exposition Internationale de Peintres et de Sculpteurs in Paris at the end of the 19th century are little studied, even though they were a decisive turning point in the art world, especially when it came to the internationalisation and marketing of the works of art.

They allowed the gallerists, those intermediaries working between the artists and the wealthy art lovers, to gradually take control of the market and guide popularity according to their own interests.

The Salon as it is also known, created in 1882 with the help of Georges Petit, perfectly illustrates this process.

Initially founded by three foreign artists who were well integrated into the Parisian art world, their objective was to promote foreign art to three academic painters who had been invited. The Salon was a great success with both critics and the wealthy.

The illness and death of the founder at the age of 38 pushed the institution towards a mercantile Parisianism that gradually gave priority to French painters, then to those favoured by the galerist, before becoming the springboard for Impressionism under the growing influence of Claude Monet and his contemporaries.

The Salon shut down in 1887 with Claude Monet and Georges Petit having achieved their goal, the climax being the Monet-Rodin retrospective at the Georges Petit Gallery in June 1889.

In A Democratic Enlightenment: The Reconciliation Image, Aesthetic Education, Possible Politics, Morton Schoolman argues that a radically new type of enlightenment is emerging in our own dark democratic and most unlikely of political times. He proposes aesthetic education through film as a way to redress the political violence inflicted on difference that society constructs as its racialized, gendered, Semitic, and sexualized Other. Drawing on Voltaire, Diderot, and Schiller, Schoolman reconstructs the genealogical history of what he calls “the reconciliation image”—a visual model of a democratic ideal of reconciliation he next theorizes through Whitman's prose and poetry, Adorno's aesthetic theory, artworks by Poussin, Lorrain, Monet, Manet, Rodin, and finally through film. A Democratic Enlightenment discovers Whitman writing verse to create visual images of reconciliation, reads Adorno against himself to formulate theoretical support for the reconciliation image in the cinema of a culture industry he rejected, and discovers a politics of aesthetics in a reconciliation image opposed to the politics of film narratives that give it birth. Analyzing The Help (2011) and Gentleman's Agreement (1947), he shows how film produces a more advanced image of reconciliation than those originally created by modernist artworks. Each film depicts violence toward racial and ethnic difference while also displaying a reconciliation image that aesthetically educates the public about how the violence of constructing difference as otherness can be overcome. Mounting a democratic enlightenment, the reconciliation image in film illuminates a possible politics for challenging the rise of nationalism's violence toward differences in all their diversity. This new type of enlightenment derives its democratic character from the universality of cinema, which extends beyond the borders of western democracies themselves, and from an ideal of reconciliation unequaled for including other core democratic values it also exceeds.

El artículo hace un recorrido por las decisivas transformaciones que experimentó la escultura en el siglo XX a partir de la crucial aportación de Auguste Rodin. Su nueva concepción del volumen, la masa, el vacío, el movimiento, el fragmento, la luz y la superficie, propició el abandono de las seculares propiedades de la escultura para alumbrar un mundo nuevo en este ámbito. Desde sus inmediatos contemporáneos, pasando por Brancusi, los impresionistas, Matisse o Picasso, hasta la nueva visión que proporciona el objeto surrealista, la escultura llega a la deconstrucción de si misma.

Günther Anders (1902-1992) is one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century. German-Jewish man of letters, journalist, and activist, he is one of the few philosophers dealing intensely with the moral consequences of Auschwitz and Hiroshima. In the gap between our technical creations and our utter inability to imagine their destructive potential lies the basis for the unstop-pable activity of this practical philosopher. Anders's main body of work, the two collections of essays Die Antiquiertheit des Menschen Vol. 1 & 2, emerge from an intricate philosophical anthropology which he developed in exile, particularly in the late 1920s and early 1930s. But it's during his American vita that he will write his text on August Rodin. The paper explores the original perspectives of Anders on Rodin' oeuvre, mainly read under the peculiar category of "homelessness", and more globally on modern sculpture. It also tries to show the strong coherence of this quite unknown Californian lecture on the French sculptor (1943) in the framework of Anders' philosophical and socio-political concepts as well as his existential context. Moreover, this analysis conveys the substantial theoretical contributions of Rainer Maria Rilke and Georg Simmel on Rodin' subversive poetics and aesthetics.

Par Sandrine Pico de La Houssière C'est l'année Auguste Rodin : pour marquer le centième anniversaire de la mort du grand sculpteur, le Grand Palais a organisé une grande rétrospective et Jacques Doillon a réalisé un film : « Rodin », sur les écrans depuis le 24 mai. Jacques Doillon a évité la convention du film biographique et a saisi l'artiste dans sa maturité, à 40 ans en 1880 au moment où il reçoit sa première commande de l'Etat : ce sera La Porte de L'Enfer composée de figurines dont certaines feront sa gloire comme le Baiser et le Penseur. Il partage sa vie avec Rose, sa compagne, lorsqu'il rencontre la jeune Camille Claudel, son élève la plus douée qui devient vite son assistante, puis sa maîtresse Cette histoire passionnée, mêlant vie personnelle et travail dans la complicité, inspire les deux artistes dont les oeuvres dialoguent et se répondent l'une l'autre. Camille Claudel finit par prendre ses distances et se réfugie en Angleterre chez Jessie Lipscomb. A son retour, tout à sa joie de la retrouver, Rodin signe en sa faveur un étonnant « contrat » par lequel il lui promet monts et merveilles et lui jure fidélité. Mais Camille s'enfonce dans la paranoïa et Rodin plonge dans les bras de ses nombreux modèles et revient auprès de sa compagne Rose Beuret (Séverine Caneele). Après leur rupture, Rodin poursuit son travail avec acharnement. Jacques Doillon s'est appliqué à montrer le travail de l'artiste. "C'est un film sur le processus de création J'ai vu trop de biopics où on avait tout sauf le travail. La plupart du temps, [ces artistes] ont des relations sentimentales, ils boivent des coups, (...) et c'est compliqué pour un peintre de prendre le pinceau et peindre comme lui. Là, avec un sculpteur, on pouvait apprendre. Le processus de création es très présent dans le film." On voit en effet Rodin évoluer autour de ses oeuvres avec des gestes enveloppants, sensuels, poussant la glaise de sa base large au sommet par une dynamique ascensionnelle transformant sa statue en flamme torsadée Le Monument à Balzac, bond en avant vers la modernité, qui l'occupera près de six ans, et ne suscitera que rejet et incompréhension. Son Balzac est moins un portrait qu'une puissante évocation du génie visionnaire dont le regard domine le monde, du créateur inspiré drapé dans la robe de moine qu'il revêtait pour écrire. Le nu en athlète se retrouve habillé d'une robe au col et revers importants. Légèrement basculé en arrière, il retrouve son aplomb, et semble faire face au monde. L'ample manteau enveloppe la figure et absorbe tous les détails au profit d'une forme concentrée culminant vers « cette tête de lion à lourde crinière qui se rejette en arrière (…) et ce fin visage envahi de chair et de graisse, (qui) projette le noir magnétisme de ses yeux sur l'immensité des choses ». Ce monument trop novateur, espèce de grand monolithe, fit scandale lorsqu'il fut exposé en 1898 et la commande fut annulée. Rodin ne vit jamais son monument coulé en bronze Réactions : « C'est Balzac ? Allons-donc, c'est un bonhomme de neige. Il va tomber, il a trop bu. C'est Balzac dans un sac. On dirait du veau. Un dolmen déséquilibré. Monstruosité obèse. Foetus colossal. Monstrueux avortement. Michel-Ange du goitre. Colossal guignol. Voyez à quelle aberration mentale l'époque est arrivée. On ne montre pas une ébauche. » Le film de Jacques Doillon donne à voir cette démarche créatrice, ces tensions artistiques sur un mode lent qui a un peu déçu et certaines sont restés de…. « marbre » ! Notre conseil : à voir en complément de l'exposition !

Le 1er septembre 1902, le poète pragois Rainer Maria Rilke rencontre pour la première fois le sculpteur français Auguste Rodin à Paris. L’année suivante, après avoir eu le temps de visiter l’atelier du sculpteur et d’étudier ses travaux, il publie Sur Rodin, un bref essai où il dit son admiration pour l’artiste et son œuvre. Plus qu’un livre hommage, l’essai de Rilke dresse un portrait passionné de Rodin, retraçant son parcours, détaillant les qualités de ses travaux et éclairant sa vision de l’art et de la création artistique. Le présent article propose une lecture de l’ouvrage de Rilke à partir la double perspective offerte par le portrait de l’artiste créateur et l’évocation de l’acte de création. En étudiant le discours de Rilke au sujet de la personne du sculpteur et des traits distinctifs de son œuvre, il s’agit de montrer la façon dont Rodin incarne un idéal de création et donne forme à un art absolu qui dépasse les limites du texte.
