Les cantates d'essai de César Franck pour le Prix de Rome (1838-1841) L'éclosion d'une personnalité musicale Au printemps 1835 César-Auguste Franck quitte son pays natal, la Belgique, où il a terminé ses études musicales au Conservatoire de Liège dans la classe de Joseph Daussoigne, neveu de Méhul. À treize ans, Franck se rend à Paris, accompagné de son père Nicolas-Joseph Franck. En effet, préoccupé par la carrière de son fils, il l'inscrit au Conservatoire afin qu'il y suive l'enseignement le plus complet, qu'il y obtienne de nombreuses récompenses et commence une brillante carrière de pianiste virtuose.

Le grand prix de gravure en médailles fut institué en 1803. Pendant plus de cent soixante ans, quarante-cinq pensionnaires se sont succédé à la Villa Médicis dans le poste de médailleur. Comme ils n'ont pas encore fait l'objet d'une étude d'ensemble, on propose ici quelques jalons pour l'histoire de leur section. Les règlements successifs, ainsi que quelques témoignages, permettent de se faire une idée de leur formation à l'École des Beaux-Arts et des modalités du concours. Les archives et le « musée » conservés à la Villa Médicis montrent ce que furent leur documentation (bibliothèque, « médaillier ») et leur atelier (actuellement connu comme studiolo de Ferdinand de Médicis). La liste de leurs envois de Rome, établie entre autres grâce aux comptes rendus de l'Institut, révèle quels étaient les bons modèles pour les travaux scolaires : au XIXe siècle, il s'agissait de graver d'après les monnaies de Syracuse et de dessiner d'après Raphaël. L'inspiration est plus libre au XXe siècle, où l'on redécouvre la taille directe sur acier après la phase de la plaquette modelée. Après 1970, la gravure en médailles n'est plus pratiquée à la Villa Médicis.

Despite the fact that the Beaux-Arts school of architecture has had an extensive impact on the manner through which architects design, from the nineteenth century to the present day it has been the target of criticism from architectural theorists and historians regarding the emphasis it placed on adherence to a historical style and its lack of adaptability to emerging technologies. However, regardless of its perceived flaws, the revolutionary educational system and adaptive eclecticism of the Beaux-Arts manifested into an international style which resonated on a global scale, “[elevating] architecture into an autonomous and structured discipline”.

Widely regarded as the most prestigious composition prize for young French composers, the Prix de Rome competition (1803-1968) has over the centuries become synonymous with academicism and conservatism. The diatribes of former
laureates such as Hector Berlioz and Claude Debussy, as well as the sensationalised ‘Ravel scandal’, have helped to perpetuate this unfavourable image of the award. As a long-running institution, the competition inevitably underwent periods of
stagnation and renewal, yet a paucity of studies devoted to examining the Prix de Rome as an institution has led to the common view of it being hidebound and immutable.

The current study identifies the period 1831-1854 as an important period of renewal within the history of the Prix de Rome. Following an experimental phase in the early decades of the nineteenth century during which the composition prize served as an appendix to the Prix de Rome in the visual arts, it began to establish its own identity and assert its importance as it responded to the new aesthetics of the Romantic movement. In particular, the dramatic cantata prescribed for the final
round of the competition followed closely the developments in the genre of grand opéra – both in the choice of libretto subjects and in the musical style. An analysis of the winning cantatas from 1831 to 1854 demonstrates not only the evolution of an institution, but also provides clues to the contents of the compositional curriculum at the Paris Conservatoire and the qualities most valued in French compositional practice. Drawing on a range of previously unseen archival materials, press reviews, and other secondary sources, this thesis raises questions about the values and aesthetics of the academician-jury, the inherent tensions between the aspects of science and art in composition, and re-evaluates the meaning of academicism in the context of a state-run institution.

L'incontro degli architetti francesi vincitori del Prix de Rome con il Classico rappresenta un'esperienza sorprendente nella cultura del Settecento e dell'Ottocento europeo. Il loro lavoro, sottomesso ad una rigida ed esemplare metodica, ha contribuito alla formazione di una matura cultura antiquaria ed è ineludibile anche oggi per una comprensione profonda dei monumenti di Roma antica.

Drawing on previous research concerning women in the French prix de Rome by Annegret Fauser and Jann Pasler, this study aims to enrich its conclusions and broaden the scope through a new focus on the Belgian prix de Rome. Focusing on the main female contestants in the Belgian competition going back to the first attempted participation of Juliette Folville in 1889, this article retraces not only the obstacles encountered by women composers but also the strategies they deployed on their path to public and institutional recognition.

En se concentrant sur les principales candidates du concours belge depuis la première tentative de Juliette Folville en 1889, cet article retrace non seulement les obstacles rencontrés par les compositrices mais également les stratégies déployées par elles dans leur chemin vers le reconnaissance publique et institutionnelle.
