Pianola

The perforated paper rolls for reproducing pianos and organs introduced in 1904 by the  Welte company of Freiburg in Germany were claimed to provide the »faithful image of the artist's playing«. Thus, these music rolls are among the earliest acoustically tangible documents of artistic piano performance and interpretation, very often by pianists who did not leave acoustic recordings like Carl Reinecke (1824-1910) or Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). Nevertheless, they have received little attention from music historians because their recording process was unexplained and their credibility was subject to critical debate. New impetus came from the investigation of the only surviving Welte recording apparatus and the discovery of more than 1000 recording rolls with the ink traces of the device. Thus central questions of the recording process and the playback parameters of Welte could be clarified, which form a necessary prerequisite for the scientific work with these valuable interpretation documents.

Igor Stravinsky was known to compose almost exclusively at the piano, yet few of his mature works were written for piano solo.  This document explores Stravinsky's creative process pertaining to the development of his first major ballet The Firebird and its relationship to the piano.  It explores Stravinsky's use of the pianola as well as a detailed examination of Stravinsky's own piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Resumen: La presente comunicación trata sobre el poco conocido fondo de rollos de pianola que custodia la Biblioteca Nacional de España. La colección, que a día de hoy sigue creciendo, cuenta con alrededor de 6500 ejemplares de música muy diversa. Hay repertorio clásico, repertorio contemporáneo (ateniéndonos a la fecha de publicación de los rollos) de autores vanguardistas y también r que era el más demandado en aquella época en la sociedad española. Concretamente en este estudio preliminar nos hemos centrado en la colección de Zarzuela y algunas de sus variantes. El conjunto de estos documentos asciende a 696 registros y en este estudio se destacan los siguientes aspectos: autores más demandados, títulos más frecuentes, casas editoras y lugares de edición, características físicas de los rollos y algún otro aspecto singular. Abstract: This paper deals with the not very well-known collection of pianola music rolls that the National Library of Spain keeps. The collection, which is being increased every day, has around 6,500 items of different styles of music. There is classic repertoire, contemporary repertoire (if we look on the publishing dates of the rolls) of avant-garde authors and also modern repertoire, which was the most demanded in those days in the spanish society. In this preliminary study we have focused our interest in the Zarzuela collection and some of its variants. The group of these documents runs to 696 items and in the study we highlight the following aspects: most required authors, most frequent titles, editors and places of edition, physical features of the music rolls and some other singular aspects.

The pianola was an intricate musical instrument that challenged common conceptions about and fostered new possibilities for music making at the turn of the 20th century. While some people embraced it enthusiastically, taking advantage of its potential for musical expressivity, others rejected it on the basis of its defiance to conventional approaches to keyboard performance. This article examines the mechanical design of the pianola, the challenges and opportunities for the short-lived performance practice around it, and its transcendence for the music industry and other realms of musical practice in the 20th century. By discussing “what happens when the playing of the pianola happens” the article offers also an interpretation of the pianola’s performative dimension and of the extent to which it helped redefine the boundaries of what was humanly or musically possible.

Technology is part of the society and culture in which it develops. In this context, thinking of technology as a privileged actor brings many misunderstandings. But as Williams (1989: 125) said, “every new technology infects the mind with technological determinism”. Technological determinism can be defined roughly as a tendency to see technology as a phenomenon distinct from the social structure and to put technology in the center of all social changes, in other words, to think that social changes are caused by technology. And as Williams (1989) states, one of the main reasons for the grunts like “computers will dominate everything” is this erroneous view of technological determinism. When it comes to developments in music technologies, these grunts shape like “no more musicians will be needed because of the technologies” and “this technology will end the live performance”. Recording techniques such as notation have been criticized by the orthodox musicians when they emerged. However, the reflection of technological determinism in music has emerged with the development of technologies that record and reproduce music through mechanical or digital ways. Today, the main focus of this discussion is on “DJ”s.
This study will be based on a different but similar historical practice from the Player Pianist when looking for the answer to the “are DJs  Musicians?” question and will also look for the answer to the question “Who is Musician?”. In this context, the study aims to reach the definition of “musician” through the relationship between technology and musicianship.

Al llarg de les tres primeres dècades del segle XX la pianola va representar un autèntic fenomen de masses. La seva història, avui oblidada, ens apropa al naixement de les grans indústries musicals, a la difusió massiva de música enregistrada i al canvi de paradigma que implicà el fet de disposar de la música desitjada en el moment escollit.
Aquesta tesi planteja una aproximació al fenomen de la pianola des de diversos punts de vista. En primer lloc presenta un apropament històric fent especial èmfasi en el binomi entre les diverses tecnologies associades a l’instrument i l’ús social que d’elles se’n desprèn. L’estudi dels dos principals sistemes de reproducció dels rotlles de pianola ens permet conèixer uns mercats, unes estètiques i unes actituds que són part del substrat sobre el qual avui conceptualitzem les activitats musicals contemporànies, pràcticament totes vinculades a la relació entre producte i mercat. En segon lloc, i com a conseqüència lògica del que s’exposa al primer capítol, presentem una radiografia sobre la dimensió social del fenomen, endinsant-nos en els discursos mediàtics i les estratègies de màrqueting de les principals empreses del sector, però també en la seva presència a la premsa escrita. El capítol tercer se centra en l’activitat de la indústria de la pianola a Catalunya, activitat liderada de manera indiscutible per l’empresa Rollos Victoria de la Garriga. Les recerques portades a terme en aquest terreny no només han permès documentar qüestions inèdites del passat de la nostra indústria musical ―una indústria d’un abast sorprenent― sinó també localitzar obres inèdites en rotlles de pianola de compositors com Manuel Blancafort, Frederic Mompou o Joaquín Rodrigo. En el decurs del treball, la rellevància d’aquestes troballes, així com la constatació del fet que estàvem obrint un camp d’estudi tant prometedor com desatès per la musicologia, va fer obvia la necessitat de disposar d’un sistema de digitalització especialitzat per a rotlles de pianola. El capítol quart de la tesi, descriu el procés de col·laboració amb diversos equips d’enginyeria fins a arribar a l’obtenció d’aquest sistema amb el qual, actualment, podem plantejar projectes de preservació d’aquest suport sonor. Aquest quart capítol, per tant, és el testimoni d’un procés vers l’obtenció de models de tecnologia aplicada a la preservació d’arxius sonors, un camp indiscutiblement necessari per a la disciplina musicològica. Gràcies als projectes de digitalització engegats durant l’elaboració de la tesi, s’han pogut explotar algunes eines per a l’anàlisi gràfica dels rotlles, eines que es mostren en el capítol cinquè, on, a partir dels materials digitalitzats, es presenten algunes propostes per a l’anàlisi de paràmetres musicals específics. Finalment, el sisè i darrer capítol es val de les eines analítiques proposades en el capítol precedent per a desgranar alguns elements d’interès sobre les troballes més rellevants sorgides de les recerques vinculades a la tesi.

Quizá por su malentendida fama de mero artefacto de reproducción automática de música, la presencia de la pianola en el panorama musical a principios del siglo XX apenas ha sido tratada por la musicología. Sin embargo, este desconocido artefacto participó en las primeras grandes industrias musicales dejando testimonio de cómo compositores y pianistas concibieron la interpretación musical. El mercado de la pianola es, por lo tanto, una desconocida antesala de los mercados que marcaron la industria musical del siglo XX, con unas cifras que nos descubren un auténtico fenómeno sociocultural y económico, en el que hallamos interesantes indicios sobre posteriores tendencias estéticas, patrones de consumo, etc. En tal contexto-y dado que el mayor auge de la pianola ocurre en los años 1920-resulta obvio que Jacinto Guerrero debe ocupar un espacio importante, pues el auge de la pianola en España coincide prácticamente con los primeros éxitos del compositor de Ajofrín.

El objetivo de este trabajo es el de acercar al lector a una singular colección de materiales musicales, el fondo de rollos de pianola de la familia Fernández-Shaw. Los herederos de tan insignes libretistas (Carlos, Guillermo y Rafael) han mantenido durante más de un siglo una interesante y modesta colección, formada por 223 rollos de pianola, que constituyen una curiosa selección de obras del género zarzuelístico en la que los libretistas participaron. A través de este estudio ofrecemos una visión general del contenido de los rollos, los géneros más comunes presentes en la colección y otras singularidades, propias de los documentos y dignas de mención.

RESUMEN
El objeto de este articulo es establecer una relación entre el player piano ―conocido en España como la pianola―¬ y el videojuego Guitar Hero. Dos artefactos separados en el tiempo por más de un siglo que aparentemente presentan unas características y usos totalmente diferenciados. Desde un enfoque que hibrida la descripción técnica con el análisis sociológico, se pretende mostrar como existen similitudes que nos permiten reflexionar sobre el uso del sonido y el gesto en el ocio musical a través del siglo XX. Tal perspectiva plantea que determinados aspectos de la música como la funcionalidad estética o la conceptualización social del virtuosismo¬, presentan algunas analogías indiscutibles entre los repertorios de finales del siglo XIX y los de la música popular contemporánea.

From the player piano to Guitar Hero: music, society and virtual virtuosity

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this article is to establish a relationship between the player piano ―known in Spain as the pianola― and the video game Guitar Hero. Two artifacts separated in time by more than a century that apparently have totally different characteristics and uses. From an approach that hybridizes the technical description with a sociological analysis, the aim of this article is to show some similarities that allow us to reflect on the use of sound and gesture in musical entertainment all over the twentieth century. This perspective suggests that some aspects of music as aesthetics functionality or virtuosity conceptualization, have some undeniable similarities between the repertories of the late nineteenth century and the ones in the contemporary popular music.

As a phenomenon of great social relevance between 1900 and 1930, the graphic advertising of the pianola must be considered as one of the first great mass media platforms linked to musical activity and, therefore, the analysis of its discourse offers valuable information about the social construction of the musical world during the first decades of the twentieth century. This article shows the results of an analysis of 200 historical posters through which it is possible to trace the origins of some of the current advertising rhetoric and also some of our current ideas about musical activity. In this way, the posters studied show some interesting links to the mindset and aesthetic and social conventions of the time but also show us to what degree these discourses are, to a large extent, still valid today.

The aim of this work is to approach the reader closer to a
singular collection of musical materials, the background of piano
rolls of the Fernández-Shaw family. The heirs of such distinguished
librettists (Carlos, Guillermo and Rafael) have kept for more than
a century an interesting and modest collection, consisting of 223
piano rolls, that constitute a curious selection of works of Zarzuela
in which the authors participated. Through this study we offer
an overview of the content of the rolls, the most common genres
present in the collection and also other singularities, proper of the
documents worth of mention.

As recording devices, the reproducing piano and phonograph decouple the time of listening to music from the time of the body laboring to make music. That is, recording technologies divide musical experience into listening and performing. They thereby construct an abstract interval between them that is filled or traversed by a new commodity, the recording. As numerous scholars have shown, the recording and its efficient commodity form fundamentally transformed both performance and listening. Less understood is how different modalities of recorded performance — the reproducing piano and phonograph — establish different theoretical models for capturing and storing music. In this paper I explore the ways in which the roll and record emphasize and embody these different models with what they capture and store. Each technology filters and amplifies a performance by taking and storing certain aspects while discarding others. For example, neither the reproducing piano nor phonograph reproduces the visual spectacle of the performer's laboring body over the keys (although many models of player piano require a skilled operator to draw out a musical performance from the roll's stored data). The phonograph provides only the aural portion of a performance, while the reproducing piano roll's dancing keys indexically signify the movements of the performer's laboring hands and simultaneously draw attention to the empty bench, to the negative space where the performer's body should be. La pianola representà un autèntic fenomen de masses durant les tres primeres dècades del segle passat. La seva història ens proporciona un interessant relat sobre el naixement de les grans indústries musicals, els inicis de la difusió massiva de música o el canvi de paradigma que suposa disposar, per primera vegada, de la música desitjada en el moment escollit. El present article parteix d’una breu contextualització històrica i tecnològica per abordar, tot seguit, el fenomen de la pianola a Catalunya a partir d’unes fonts que, malgrat el seu alt interès, han estat molt poc explotades. Lluny de presentar una anàlisi quantitativa i sistemàtica sobre aquests materials, l’objectiu d’aquest article és mostrar el potencial del rotlle de pianola com a testimoni del nostre passat, tant des de la perspectiva estrictament sonora com des de la vessant sociocultural que se’n pot desprendre.

Im Jahr 1904, als der Zenit der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft bereits überschritten war, meldete die Freiburger Firma Welte & Söhne ein Patent für ihr Reproduktionsklavier an, das als Welte-Mignon-Reproduktionsklavier ab 1905 Einzug in die bürgerlichen Salons halten sollte. Die technischen Mittel der Freiburger Erfindung ermöglichten es, die Interpretationen der bezeichnenden Werke des langen, bürgerlichen 19. Jahrhunderts durch die Créme-de-la-Créme des zeitgenössischen Musikschaffens zu den Hörern zu bringen. KomponistInnen wie Camille Saint-Saëns, Claude Debussy, Alexander Skrjabin und Max Reger hatten mit ihren Einspielungen eigener und fremder Werke großen Anteil an der Popularität des Welte-Mignon-Klaviers, das bis in die 1930er Jahre von Vielen dem Grammofon vorgezogen wurde. Der umfangreiche Nachlass der Firma im Augustinermuseum in Freiburg im Breisgau stellt den Ausgangspunkt für die Betrachtungen zur zeitgenössischen Rezeption und zum Einfluss des Repetitionsklaviers auf den bürgerlichen Salon dar. Darüber hinaus sind die Klavierrollen auch für die heutige Forschung ein beinahe unerschöpflicher Fundus. Man denke an die Interpretations- und Performanceforschung, wie sie vor allem in Großbritannien durch Nicholas Cook und seine KollegInnen betrieben wird. Seltsamerweise werden die Welte-Rollen bisher außer Acht gelassen, so dass sich dieser Beitrag auch als kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Material versteht und prüfen will, inwiefern die Klavierrollen einer „Interpretationsgeschichte“, die bis weit in das 19. Jahrhundert zurückreichen soll, dienlich sein kann.
