Dejó de escribirse, y presumiblemente de hablarse, hacia finales del siglo IX a. During archaeological excavations in 1996, a Philistine inscription was exposed at the site of Tel Miqne. According to this inscription the city was identified as the biblical Ekron. The inscription was published in 1998 and is currently on display at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. It is written in a Philistine dialect with Phoenician letters that was used during the Iron Age, an era that is parallel with the First Temple period, and dates to the eighth and seventh centuries BCE. The inscription records five of the city's kings: Achish, Paddy, Yesid, Ada and Yair. The ruler of the city, Paddy Ben Achish, has dedicated it to his goddess Ptagia..
