The tribal Pashtuns of Pakistan, based in the Afghanistan–Pakistan border region, have historically been portrayed as “violent” and “warrior-like,” both in the colonial and contemporary literature. However, a brief review of archival literature suggests that oriental representation of tribal Pashtuns is based on various generalizations that were formed and propagated during the British military expeditions against the tribal Pashtuns. Moreover, these generalizations and stereotypes against the tribal Pashtuns have persisted since Pakistan’s independence in 1947. Recent developments in Pakistan’s Pashtun tribal belt, with various tribes convening Jirga meetings, condemning and countering militant activities and protesting against the state’s injustices explain the importance and desire for peace among the tribal Pashtuns. Finally, a brief analysis of the recently started Pashtun Tahafuz (protection) movement (PTM), an indigenous peace and human rights movement involving both men and women, and its nonviolent nature also reinforces the importance of peace for the tribal Pashtuns.

Polynomial texture mapping (PTM) offers advantages over traditional raking light photography for examining and documenting the surface texture and shape of paintings. It is less expensive and computationally intensive than structured light or laser-based scanning techniques. Several small paintings and mock-up paintings have been examined and it is shown that PTMs are able to record surface features including craquelure, planar distortion, wood grain, canvas weave and pentimenti. By making images before and after physical change, the PTM technique can monitor and map change to the surface texture and shape of paintings. Future development of the system is described briefly.

Beautifully carved stone cylinder seals from Mesopotamia (ca. 3400–400 BCE) acted as both a utilitarian means for creating a “signature” on clay tablets and a piece of personal adornment. New modern photographic techniques allow scholars to study in new ways the artistic techniques of the carvers of these seals, which enhance the ability to examine the religious and political contexts of the scenes portrayed on the cylinder seals.

Proteogenomics provide opportunities for proteomic validation of gene structures, genomic alterations and functional relevance of novel findings obtained from genomic data analysis. However, for effective proteogenomic data integration, an extensive proteome profiling, approaching the gene coverage of genomics data, is critical. Here we developed a multi-stage database search method for comprehensive proteomics data analysis to complement whole transcriptome sequencing data. The method utilizes two complementary database search engines, MS-GF+ and MODa/MODi, in tandem. The MS/MS data were first subjected to MS-GF+ database search (1st stage search) and the unidentified MS/MS data from the 1st stage search were subsequently analyzed with the combined use of MODa and MODi (2nd stage search), tools for blind and unrestrictive modification search, respectively. When combined with mPE-MMR, a tool for accurate and extensive precursor masses assignments to MS/MS data, the multi-stage method exhibited a significant increase in identified peptides, modified peptides, mutated peptides, identified proteins and coding genes, compared to a conventional single-stage method. With the increased coverage of proteome profile, the genomics and proteomics data obtained from the same gastric tumor tissue were effectively integrated as evidenced by proBAMsuite analysis results, which showed abundant examples of peptides uniquely mapped to genomic locations as well as increased coverages of exon-exon junctions and coding regions with the multi-stage search method.

The inherited colonial patrimony of authoritarianism since the British colonial system has engraved strong grips over the political system of many countries and the same elements have been evident in the political system of Pakistan. Due to the recent political movements, it has been observed that Pakistani militants and elites have played a vital role in turning the Pakistan government into an authoritarian regime, this paper will analyze the political system of Pakistan that how it has turned into the authoritarian regime and how it has affected its own people in the long run.

This contribution presents insights into the ongoing evolution of new visualization techniques relevant for the fields of archaeology and, particularly, Assyriology. We focus on systems and methods facilitating the reading of texts and sealings impressed on clay tablets. Making high resolution 3D models of archaeological objects seems an attractive and fulfilling solution, but in most cases the acquisition of these models is complex and their manipulation is demanding for both computer and  researcher. Research groups across the world are working on these issues. In the presented survey, special attention goes to the results developed by Ancient Near Eastern scholars and engineers of Leuven University - Belgium, who built a Portable Light Dome related to the PTM-technology, which supplies scholars with so-called 2D+ images of digitally recorded objects. These virtual artifacts allow a detailed dynamic study of a wide variety of archaeological finds. For the field of cuneiform studies, the outcome is revolutionizing the approach how in a combined way the tablet, the text or any other kind of impressions on its surface can be visualized all together. The new visualization techniques present themselves as excellent digital safeguards and have proven to be high quality aids when used during a study process as well as for consultation after publication.

Polynomial Texture Mapping (PTM; Malzbender et al 2001) uses multiple images to capture the reflectance properties of a given surface. Multiple captures may be combined in order to produce interactive, relit records of the material recorded. In addition recent research enables the capture and rendition of interactive PTMs for detailed examination of surface details. Cultural heritage examples of the technology include work on Cuneiform tablets, numismatic archives and lithic artefacts. This paper will describe the PTM data capture and processing technologies developed by the University of Southampton, with support from Hewlett Packard Labs Palo Alto. In biological applications, the tandem mass spectrometry is a widely used method for determining protein and peptide sequences from an “in vitro” sample. The sequences are not determined directly, but they must be interpreted from the mass spectra, which is the output of the mass spectrometer. This work is focused on a similarity-search approach to mass spectra interpretation, where the parameterized Hausdorff distance (dHP) is used as the similarity. In order to provide an efficient similarity search under dHP, the metric access methods and the TriGen algorithm (controlling the metricity of dHP) are employed. Moreover, the search model based on the dHP supports posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in the query mass spectra, what is typically a problem when an indexing approach is used. Our approach can be utilized as a coarse filter by any other database approach for mass spectra interpretation.

VDAC este o porină din membrana mitocondriala cu rol in apoptoză. In plus fata de permeabilitatea voltaj dependenta fata de anioni se pare ca in anumite situatii se produce o crestere majora a permeabilitatii sale cu trecerea unor peptiode cu importanta functionala din mitocondrie in citosol. Exista ipoteza ca diversi factori modulatori cum sunt cei oxidativi pot declansa apoptoză si cu participarea porinei VDAC. Noi dorim sa evaluam asemenea modificari cu importanta functionala ce se produc dupa atacul oxidativ asupra anumitor radicali tirozinice din structura moleculei. Din experimente in vitro şi in vivo, modificarea se produce prin nitrare sau agregare sub acţiunea anionului peroxinitrit. Acesta este produs din oxid nitric si anionul superoxid generate in exces in conditiile expunerii la microrganisme, substante chimice, radiatii electromagnetice ionizante si stress psihic. Fenomenul de generare la nivele inalte de peroxinitrit si acţiunea acestuia asupra moleculelor proteice şi lipidice se numeste stress nitrooxidativ. Nitrarea VDAC este un eveniment cu consecinţe funcţionale majore atât prin fenomenul de oligomerizare cât şi prin posibilele punţi ditirozinice formate sub acţiunea peroxynitritului. Structurile supramoleculare rezultate modifică major structura membranară şi asta în condiţiile stressului nitrooxidativ. The voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) is the most abundant protein in the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Due to its localization, VDAC is involved in a wide range of processes, such as passage of ATP out of mitochondria, and particularly plays a central role in apoptosis. Importantly, the assembly of VDAC provides interaction with a wide range of proteins, some implying oligomerization. However, many questions remain as to the VDAC structure, its supramolecular assembly, packing density, and oligomerization in the MOM is unknown. Après de nombreuses années d’examens non-destructifs tels que la tomographie et la RTI-PTM, entre autres, sur cette stèle en quartzite du roi Amenhotep II faisant une offrande à Amun-Re,  les résultats ont révélés de très nombreuses traces de remaniements. Certains signes hiéroglyphiques, le cartouche royal et des images ont été délibérément effacés puis regravés. De plus amples recherches seront  nécessaires pour identifier les personnages représentés et pour établir une chronologie historique plus détaillée.

The plight of the Pashtuns of Pakistan runs deep and is rooted in a series of unfortunate historical events that has led to systematic discrimination of their ethnic group. The PTM has been able to make waves amongst Pakistani society, but the Pakistani government is reluctant to sway in favour of their demands, which can be explained by the fact that the PTM is not only calling out the Pakistani police’s brutality, but they have also charged at the de facto leaders of the country: the military establishment. Indeed, the PTM challenges the military’s integrity and has publicly accused it of not only collaborating with terrorist organisations, but also fermenting them in order to serve its interests. The mass support gathered by the PTM is increasingly threatening the military establishment’s hegemony. As such, the PTM is seen by the military as a true thorn in its side, and in an attempt to remove it, the movement’s symbolic and charismatic leader, Manzoor Pashteen, was arrested on 27 January on grounds of criminal intimidation, promoting enmity between different groups, criminal conspiracy, sedition and condemning the creation of the country and advocating the abolishment of its sovereignty. Despite widespread manifestations protesting his arrests and demands of his immediate release, on top of condemnations by notable human rights organisations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, as well as Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Pashteen was detained for a month and only released on bail. The charges against him were not dropped, and if sentenced, he could face life imprisonment.

This paper is not concerned with the theory of Polynomial Textural Mapping but with how a PTM of an artefact or feature can be obtained cheaply, quickly and accurately. In this article we will look at creating PTM's of larger objects in the field on horizontal, vertical or near vertical surfaces.

A few weeks ago, I wrote on this website, indeed in good intention, that the PTM and the Pakistan’s military needed to find a middle way out of the ongoing tussle over the control of the erstwhile FATA region that boarding war-ravaged Afghanistan with whom Pakistan has had bitter-sweet ties for the last seven decades.
However, it seems that both the parties are acting in a self-righteous manner on account of divergent perceptions of the past, particularistic view of the present and apprehensive sense of the future. Much of the mutual misgivings is grounded in the partition of the British India that sowed the seeds of resentment, hatred and bloodshed among neighbours who had lived side by side in villages, towns and cities in the pre-colonial period for centuries.

The PTM and the military need to tread a ‘middle’ path whereas the former abstains from its belligerent use of speech against the latter; and, the latter needs to establish a cordial communication mechanism with the PTM leadership in order to gradually win over its confidence so as to seek consensual solution to its demands. Any miscalculation on the part of the PTM or the state institutions, would result into immediate mayhem and gradually to a civil war in which the winner would be the one with more resources, better skills, sophisticated technology and the socio-moral support of the populace. The regional data, i.e. India, Sri Lanka, suggests that the nation-states, being an organized and strong entity, have prevailed in such cases.
