The rising fame of multiethnic and multiracial or ‘mixed’ celebrities in Japan, such as tennis player Naomi Osaka, has brought into focus the roles of Japan’s Nationality Law and understandings of nationality and citizenship in shaping identity. According to Article 14 of Japan’s Nationality Law, persons holding multiple nationalities must choose to forfeit all but one before the age of 22. In this article I aim to address how multiethnic and multiracial youths of Japanese descent in Australia are approaching the ambiguities surrounding their citizenship and nationality rights. To do so I will closely examine to what extent the Nationality Law affects their future decisions and identities by drawing upon evidence from in-depth interviews I conducted with mixed Japanese youth who are the child of one Japanese parent and one non-Japanese parent and live in Australia. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, I argue that mixed Japanese youth in Australia perceive citizenship less as an agent of identity and more as an index of socioeconomic opportunity. My findings demonstrate that these individuals actively strive to maintain their dual citizenship and strategically align their cultural capital to realise meaningful cross-cultural careers that communicate between Australia, Japan, and their own mixed identities.

They were often geographically isolated in Japanese “colonies” as coffee plantation workers and thus able to maintain their Japanese linguistic and cultural identity. A new imagined community coalesced in the several Japanese-language immigrant newspapers that also published locally produced serial fiction. This paper reads two representative works by Sugi Takeo, pen name of Takei Makoto (1909-2011), who was a prolific contributor of original content to the Burajiru Jihô newspaper. In the short stories, “Kafé-en o uru” (Selling the coffee plantation, 1933) and “Tera Roshya” (Terra rossa, 1937), it is the moonshine sellers who see steady profits from every race and type of immigrant laborer while the Japanese newcomers who naively dream of riches by bringing coffee to market reap only a bitter brew of poverty for their efforts.

Identity is a fickle concept. When we talk about “ethnicity” and its ties to identity, we are engaged in a delicate balancing act, making meaning out of how we feel about ourselves and how others view us. Multiethnicity provides a compelling model of this negotiation; “authenticity” fundamentally boils down to an argument over “blood” and “culture,” between what others see and what’s in our hearts.

El presente artículo analizará qué papel juega la construcción de fronteras étnicas y económicas para la exclusión y pertenencia a la diáspora nikkei y la relación que existe entre el Estado-nación japonés y la diáspora de descendientes latinoamericanos. Para este propósito me enfocaré en dos casos: las organizaciones de descendientes que apelan a una articulación transnacional en base a lo que les es común: su origen japonés, pero también su nacimiento y crianza en América Latina. El segundo, refiere a la migración de descendientes de origen latinoamericano a Japón desde finales de 1980. En ambos, se observa una relación contradictoria del Estado japonés con su diáspora: al reconocer un vínculo cultural y étnico con los descendientes para fines labores al incorporarlos como intermediarios culturales y traductores económicos en las empresas e instituciones japonesas en América Latina o bien, movilizándolos a Japón para ocupar trabajos no calificados en los sectores industriales. No obstante, pareciera que el vínculo de reconocimiento no trasciende una incorporación desigual en la esfera económica y productiva, dado que la condición étnica de los descendientes, determina la manera en que se insertan en la estructura social japonesa dentro y fuera del archipiélago.

RESUMO A proposta desse artigo é analisar, por meio de revisão bibliográfica, as representações sociais construídas sobre os nikkeis no Brasil, a partir do processo de imigração. Considerando que o contexto político e social teve um papel fundamental na construção e transformação dessas representações, será lançado um olhar retrospectivo sobre elas, para que, assim, seja possível ter uma compreensão mais profunda sobre o contexto atual. Palavras-chaves: identidade nacional; identidade nikkei; imigração japonesa; perigo amarelo; representações sociais. RESÚMEN La propuesta de este artículo es analizar, por medio de revisión bibliográfica, las representaciones sociales construidas sobre los nikkeis en Brasil, a partir del proceso de inmigración. Considerando que el contexto político y social desempeñó un papel fundamental en la construcción y transformación de esas representaciones, se echará una mirada retrospectiva sobre ellas, para que así sea posible tener una comprensión más profunda sobre el contexto actual. ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to analyze, through a bibliographical review, the social representations built on nikkei in Brazil, starting from the immigration process.

La presente tesis busca analizar los lugares en donde la comunidad de nipodescendientes ha tenido la posibilidad de aprehender la cultura e historia de la comunidad japonesa. Estos espacios son: el espacio familiar/privado, como también, el espacio público con las escuelas de idiomas creadas por la propia comunidad.

The Nikkei (日系)  community of Peru is the oldest Japanese community in South America.    It was established in 1899.      Like all ethnicities, the unique identity of the Peruvian Nikkei has evolved over time. This paper examines how this identity has changed and why. The analysis is in three parts. Firstly, the historical and social elements that constructed Nikkei identity prior to the dekasegi (出稼ぎ)  period (pre-1990) are analysed. Secondly, the effect the dekasegi experience had on Nikkei identity is discussed. Subsequently, the essay compares and contrasts the two distinct periods of identity. This paper argues that a distinct shift in identity has occurred, from a Japan-centric construct to an increasingly celebrated Nikkei identity. It is illustrated how the factors of racism and social exclusion has helped shape this Nikkei identity.  Dissimilar from observers such as Takeyuki Tsuda,  who maintain that the dekasegi experience has only succeeded in confirming Nikkei Japanese loyalty, this paper ultimately argues that dekasegi experience was the awakening that has formed a new identity, neither Peruvian or Japanese, but Peruvian Nikkei.

　本稿は近年のブラジルの日本移民研究であまり対象にされてこなかったカトリック教会に焦点を当てて、政治政策、教育、社会福祉、文化など、日本移民に対してカトリック教会が具体的にどの分野で、どのような活動をしたかを分析するものである。史料は主にサンパウロ大司教区や日本移民の間で活動した宣教師の文書を使用する。この史料分析を通して、ブラジル社会において独特な社会的、精神的権威を持つカトリック教会が、日本移民の生活水準の向上やブラジル社会への適応を目指し、積極的に、また様々なレベルにおいて働きかけていたため、移民事業に関して日本政府と密接に連携を保っていたことが示される。
　さらに教会の仲介によって、ブラジルに移住した日本人は生活が安定しただけでなく、母国の文化を放棄せずに、現地の異文化に同化できることを理解するに至った。このように、教会の尽力によって日本移民は異文化を受け入れることで、社会的上昇や同化プロセスを一層早めることができたため、当初出稼ぎ移民として始まった日本移民は最終的にブラジルへの永住を決意したのでる。

"The Japanese immigrants in Brazil and the social role of the Catholic
Church"

　The purpose of this paper is to analyze the contribution of the Catholic Church to Japanese immigrants in Brazil in different fields (politics, education, social welfare, and culture, among others). The historical documents used in this research come mainly from the archives of
the Archdiocese of São Paulo and from different missionaries involved in the pastoral care of Japanese immigrants. The analysis of these documents shows how the Catholic Church –making use of its unique social and moral authority within Brazilian society– worked actively
on behalf of these immigrants to raise their living standards, and to help them adapt themselves to local society, eventually finding itself in close cooperation with the Japanese government.
　Moreover, the mediation of the Church not only stabilized the immigrantsʼ lives in Brazil, but also made them realize that it was possible to adopt elements of local cultural, without giving up their own national identity and cultural values. The efforts of the Church also catalyzed the immigrantsʼ cultural adaptation, speeding both their social ascent and their social
assimilation in Brazil. That strongly influenced their permanent settlement in Brazil, even though their initial aim was to emigrate as temporary migrant workers.

Research on migration has often characterized migration and the state as being in conflict. International migration does present some challenges to the state in accommodating migrants that bring with them various cultural and social identities. Nonetheless, not all migration experiences can be generalized in dichotomous terms. In this sense, the case of the first South American country to elect a president of Japanese origin and to regard a Chinese migrant-owned supermarket chain as representative of the state's business model merits closer examination. The experience of Chinese and Japanese migrants in Peru contributes to the literature on transnational migration that regards migrants as both recipients of change and agents that influence a state's national identity. Through measures such as common language acquisition and the adoption of new cultural traditions, Chinese and Japanese migrants were integrated into Peru and thus influenced some changes in the state's national identity in a less conflictive way.

This research is focused on the ethnic and touristic neighborhood of Liberdade, located in São Paulo, Brazil. This area was initially an enclave of Japanese immigrants and went through a process of touristification inspired by North American Chinatowns. From its foundation as touristic area, Liberdade has been divided between the identity of a Japanese Neighborhood (Bairro Japonês) and an Oriental Neighborhood (Bairro Oriental). In the present days, this neighborhood is experiencing a process of entry of different migrant groups – mainly Chinese and Koreans. This demographic change is simultaneously changing the local landscape, with the opening of several different ethnically identified businesses. Taking into consideration the arrival of new waves of Chinese and Korean migrants and their increased participation in the area, I have sought to understand what forms of neighborhood interaction are occurring, focusing particularly in the perception of the established local Nikkei community.

La noche del 21 de abril de 1977, catorce hombres armados vestidos de civil invadieron el estudio de abogacía de mi padre Oscar Takashi Oshiro y de su socio Enrique Gastón Courtade. Los obligaron a subirse a un Ford Falcon y arrancaron para un rumbo desconocido y sin retorno. Aquella misma noche, mi mamá, Beba, como todos la llamaban, mi hermano Leonardo y quién escribe estas líneas estábamos en el octavo piso de un departamento ubicado de la avenida Acoyte 222, en el barrio porteño de Caballito. Algo estaba hirviendo en la cocina; la mesa estaba lista para la cena pero al final quedó intacta, con los platos de porcelana blanca y el mantel de algodón naranja y blanco floreado. Había algo extraño en el aire ese día, mi madre estaba muy agitada y no hablaba mucho. Era extraño porque ella acostumbraba a conversar mucho. Yo estaba sentada en el sofá frío de cuero negro, abrigada con una frazada de lana que me picaba al contacto con la piel. Trataba de concentrarme en algún programa de televisión. Con mis apenas cinco años de edad, yo sabía que estábamos esperando a mi papá que volviera de trabajar. No tenía noción de la hora pero sí de la cotidianidad: el sol bajaba, mi mamá terminaba su trabajo en la empresa textil de su padre Juan en el barrio de Boedo. Subíamos a la camioneta con mi abuela materna, Teresa, mi abuelo Juan al volante, quien nos llevaba hasta el departamento. Eran unas veinte cuadras de distancia que pasaban muy rápido mientras cantábamos canciones tradicionales folklóricas. Entrelazando las historias de vida de dos inmigrantes japoneses rigurosamente vigilados, con evidencias documentales de fuentes mexicanas, estadounidenses y niponas, Sergio Hernández Galindo muestra el impacto de las políticas que afectaron a la comunidad japonesa residente en México antes y después del conflicto, analizando la relación compleja entre las tres naciones, con sus implicaciones más allá del Atlántico.

Les nippo-brésiliens qui travaillent au Japon depuis les années 1990 sont les descendants (deuxième et troisième génération) des Japonais ayant émigré au Brésil avant la seconde guerre mondiale. En l’espace de quelques décennies seulement différentes générations de cette population nippo-brésilienne ont fait l’expérience de la migration vers le Brésil, vers le Japon ou d’allers retours entre les deux. Nous mettrons en évidence l’instrumentalisation des discours du retour en fonction des objectifs des différents acteurs de la migration (migrants, autorités, associations, médias, etc.) qui les produisent. Nous montrerons aussi comment ces discours qui ont à la fois structuré les représentations et l’histoire officielle de la population nippo- brésilienne sont producteurs de sens et d’identité, influant ainsi sur le futur des nippo- brésiliens du Japon.

Los estudios históricos, culturales o literarios sobre la América hispana han obedecido durante mucho tiempo a la lógica exclusiva del cara a cara con Europa. Por lo tanto, las investigaciones sobre la influencia del Extremo Oriente en el proceso de individuación del subcontinente han sido desestimadas hasta el punto de que aún hoy en día carecen de una verdadera legitimidad, excepto quizás en Cuba y el Brasil. La ambición de este libro ha sido resaltar los desencuentros pero también, y sobre todo, las transferencias culturales entre el Extremo Oriente y la América Hispana, desde el siglo XVI hasta la actualidad. Algunos fueron directos, otros transitaron por Europa: enriquecieron el diálogo entre el Viejo y el Nuevo Mundo con nuevas resonancias. Filipinas, México y el Perú descuellan aquí en la fabricación de objetos culturales mestizos. En la misma línea, los autores deseaban confrontar a los historiadores con los historiadores del arte y los especialistas en crítica literaria, para devolver a la fricción de las culturas la pluralidad de voces que merecía.

Les études historiques, culturelles ou littéraires, sur l’Amérique de langue espagnole ont longtemps obéi à la logique d’un face-à-face avec l’Europe. Aussi, les recherches sur l’influence de l’Extrême Orient dans le processus d’individuation du sous-continent ont-elles fait l’objet d’un déni au point de manquer encore de nos jours d’une réelle légitimité, hormis peut-être à Cuba et au Brésil. L’ambition de ce livre a été de mettre en valeur les rendez-vous manqués mais aussi, et surtout, les transferts culturels entre l’Extrême Orient et l’Amérique hispanique, du XVIème à nos jours. Certains furent directs, d’autres transitèrent par l’Europe : ils enrichirent le dialogue entre l’Ancien et le Nouveau Monde de résonances inédites. Les Philippines, le Mexique et le Pérou ont ici une place de choix dans la fabrication d’objets culturels métis. Dans la même veine, les auteurs ont souhaité confronter historiens, historiens de l’Art et littéraires, afin de restituer à la friction des cultures la pluralité de voix qu’elle méritait.

Historical, cultural or literary studies on Spanish-speaking America have long obeyed the logic of a face-to-face with Europe. Research on the influence of the Far East in the process of individuation of the sub-continent has therefore been denied to the point where it still lacks real legitimacy today, except perhaps in Cuba and Brazil. The ambition of this book has been to highlight the missed encounters but also, and above all, the cultural transfers between the Far East and Hispanic America, from the 16th century to the present day. Some of them were direct, others passed through Europe: they enriched the dialogue between the Old and New Worlds with new resonances. The Philippines, Mexico and Peru have a special place here in the manufacture of mixed-race cultural objects. In the same vein, the authors wished to confront historians, art historians and literary scholars in order to restore to the friction of cultures the plurality of voices it deserved.

スペイン語圏アメリカの歴史的、文化的、文学的研究は、長い間、ヨーロッパとの対面という論理に従ってきた。そのため、亜大陸の個性化の過程における極東の影響に関する研究は、おそらくキューバとブラジルを除いて、今日でも真の正統性を欠くほど否定されてきた。本書の目的は、16世紀から現代に至るまでの極東とヒスパニック・アメリカの間で見過ごされてきた出会い、そして何よりも文化的な移ろいにスポットを当てることである。その中には、直接的なものもあれば、ヨーロッパを経由したものもあり、旧世界と新世界の対話を新たな響きで豊かにした。フィリピン、メキシコ、ペルーは、混血の文化的なオブジェの製作において、ここでは特別な位置を占めています。同じように、著者たちは、歴史家、美術史家、文学者と対峙し、文化の摩擦にふさわしい声の多様性を取り戻すことを望んでいた。

关于美洲西班牙语国家的历史、文化或文学研究长期以来一直遵循着与欧洲面对面的逻辑。因此，关于远东在次大陆个体化过程中的影响的研究一直被否定，以至于今天仍然缺乏真正的合法性，也许除了古巴和巴西。本书的目标是强调错过的相遇，但最重要的是，从16世纪至今，远东和西班牙裔美国人之间的文化转移。其中一些是直接的，另一些则是通过欧洲传递的：它们以新的共鸣丰富了新旧世界之间的对话。菲律宾、墨西哥和秘鲁在这里的混血文物制造中占有特殊地位。同样，作者们也希望与历史学家、艺术史学家和文学家们对峙，以恢复文化摩擦中应有的多元声音。

これは、ラテンアメリカ出身の日系人、特に神奈川県と東京都に在住するペルー人における
ローカル・シチズンシップ、エージェンシー、社会的統合に関する考察である。日系ペルー人に関
する博士論文を書くにあたり、その中間結果を以下のようにまとめてみた。
日本には単純労働者であるが在留資格を持つ日系人に対して国としての統合政策が無いた
め、日系人自身が個別にローカル・シチズンシップ獲得のために闘い、それを得てきたということ
が考えられる。そのようにして彼らは地方自治体やNPOのサポートを受けてきており、また、地方
自治体やNPOが日系人の諸問題の解決責任を負わされていることが見えてくる。しかしながら、
日系人側も受身になっているだけでなく、日系人コミュニティの共通目標である社会的統合に向
け既にイニシアチブを取っていることが、日本ペルー共生協会のケースを見るとわかる。また、調
査の結果、移民の市民権を個人の問題ととらえると、社会、経済、歴史的要素から考えるというよ
り自己責任のもとで個人が解決していく課題となってしまうことが明らかとなる。このことから、
外国人住民は自分達の市民権問題を集団で解決していかなければならないだろうと考える。

Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a literatura de autoria feminina nipo-brasileira, que se manifestou mais significativamente a partir da década de 1980, período considerado expressivo por romper com um certo silenciamento sobre o papel da mulher no processo da imigração japonesa para o Brasil. São obras que expressam a visão feminina sobre a imigração, o cotidiano e as questões de identidade, colocando as nikkeis como protagonistas nas histórias e formulando uma narrativa e escrita feminina.

Crisis can reveal unspoken or unconscious assumptions that people have about their place within society. The March 11, 2011 disasters (earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdowns) triggered spontaneous acts of generosity and caring that transcended the everyday alienation of many people from each other in Japan. But it also triggered another kind of response, one that was more judgmental of those who failed to live up to a prescribed form of solidarity. As the meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant unfolded in March 2011 and foreign nationals left the country, the decision of those who stayed behind was a kind of statement of their loyalty to Japan. Some who stayed in Japan may have felt pressure to reinforce their decision with verbal expressions of loyalty. Joshua Roth interpreted Japanese Brazilian residents' expressions of love for Japan in the days following the disaster as revealing anxiety about their place in Japan. Yet in attempting to co-author an article with a Japanese Brazilian friend, Roth discovered that some expressions of solidarity emerged precisely for the opposite reason—that they were well integrated and capable of identifying with the suffering of the Japanese in Fukushima and other northeastern prefectures of the country. The process of co-writing shifted his interpretation to some degree, but not fully. We may think of co-authorship, however, as a success in revealing the contested process of interpretation and the messy production of anthropological knowledge.

Esta pesquisa qualitativa focaliza a questão das identidades construídas em um contexto de bilinguismo de minorias linguísticas, a saber, em duas salas de aula de uma escola de língua japonesa pertencente a uma associação de nipo-descendentes. O trabalho de campo na escola foi realizado por seis meses durante as aulas de cultura que são lecionadas para todas as crianças e adolescentes, descendentes e não-descendentes de japoneses, que estudam a língua japonesa.

El importante incremento en Japón de residentes de ascendencia japonesa (nikkeijin) desde 1990 en localidades donde conviven con los nacionales y otros grupos étnicos, ha motivado medidas destinadas a atender las demandas planteadas por su presencia. Siguiendo directrices del Estado agrupadas bajo los términos “coexistencia multicultural”, los gobiernos locales han ensayado diversas estrategias para atenderlas.
Basado en un trabajo de campo que tuvo lugar desde agosto de 2007, hasta agosto de 2008, este artículo acomete dos tareas: primero, compara cómo nikkeijin que viven en Kanto y en Tokai se redefinen como agentes interactuando con las organizaciones locales y los municipios, procurando ciudadanía en el ámbito local en el marco de la coexistencia multicultural o tabunka kyôsei.
En segundo lugar, propone que el análisis de las políticas hacia los extranjeros y la ciudadanía debe dar cuenta de lo local y lo regional, además de ser sensible al género y a la historia.

This article discusses the process of Japanese emigration to Peru in the early-twentieth century, culminating in their extraordinary rendition from the same country at the hands of the United States government at the height of World War II, analyzing the processes through the lens of Seiichi Higashide’s 1981 testimonio Adios to Tears (Namida no Adiosu). It follows Higashide’s journey from Hokkaido, Japan to Ica, Peru, and finally, via rendition, to the United States, first to Crystal City internment camp in Texas before being ‘paroled’ as an ‘undocumented immigrant’ to Seabrook Farms, New Jersey to provide labour for a privately-held company. Higashide, along with many other Peruvian Nikkei of the same era, fell victim to a series of treaties, laws, and finally, global conflicts that ultimately rendered them stateless. Arguing that this history is the product of the fundamental irrationality of racializing global forces implicit in the notion of modernity, I suggest that its aftermaths continue to resonate today.

A partir da metade da década de 1980 e mais especificamente devido aos 80 anos da imigração japonesa, em 1988, emergiram mais expressivamente obras escritas por imigrantes japoneses e descendentes que buscavam a construção da memória dos nikkeis. Esse período é significativo por concretizar-se uma literatura nikkei, composta principalmente de autobiografias e romances. Assim, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar as autobiografias escritas pelos imigrantes que abordam, sobretudo, o mundo do trabalho e enfatizam os sofrimentos vividos nas fazendas de café, a superação dos problemas através do gambarê, a ajuda cooperativa da comunidade nipônica e a vitória desses indivíduos no Brasil. Para as análises, selecionamos três autobiografias: “Samurai da Paz: Saga de um Imigrante Japonês” (1982); “Toda uma vida no Brasil” (1984) e “Sob dois horizontes” (1988). Metodologicamente, analisaremos as literaturas na perspectiva de Pierre Bourdieu (2002), compreendendo autobiografias como um discurso oficial de si e marcada pelo sucesso econômico e social. Como resultados, sugerimos que os autores desejavam deixar os seus registros para as gerações futuras. Narravam-se as suas histórias e o processo imigratório cronologicamente, acentuando os sofrimentos e as dificuldades.
