Nest Box

The motivation of this study was to investigate some hitherto unknown information on the breeding ecology of the Stripe-breasted Tit (Parus fasciiventer) in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, south-western Uganda. Parus fasciiventer is one of the least studied and endemic bird species restricted to the montane forests of the Albertine Rift. Regionally, it is classified as near-threatened. The study was carried out around the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation Ruhija camp and the period of study was from January to June 2003. Data were generated through direct observation at the nest box sites of three active nests. Each of the nest boxes was monitored from the time of nest building to the time the chicks fledged. Results and comparative assessments from this study demonstrate that P. fasciiventer, compared with its temperate congeners like Great Tits (Parus major), Marsh Tits (Parus palustris), Crested Tits (Parus cristatus), Coal Tits (Parus ater) and Blue Tits (Parus caeruleus), raised small broods and had longer nestling period. The findings further revealed that the species is capable of raising more than one brood in a single breeding season and provide further evidence that it is a cooperative breeder. Parents participated equally in raising the young, an indication of pure parenting in the species.La raison de cette étude était de rechercher certaines informations jusqu’alors inconnues sur l’écologie de la reproduction de la mésange à ventre strié, Parus fasciiventer, dans le Parc National de la Forêt impénétrable de Bwindi, dans le sud-ouest de l’Ouganda. Parus fasciiventer est une des espèces d’oiseaux endémiques les moins étudiées; elle se limite aux forêts de montagne du Rift Albertin. Au niveau régional, elle est classée comme quasi menacée. L’étude s’est réalisée autour du camp de Ruhija de l’Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation de janvier à juin 2003. Les données furent obtenues par des observations directes sur les sites de trois nichoirs actifs. Chaque nid a été suivi depuis sa construction jusqu’à la mue des oisillons. Les résultats et des évaluations comparatives de cette étude ont montré que P. fasciiventer, comparéà ses congénères des régions tempérées comme la mésange charbonnière Parus major, la mésange nonnette Parus palustris, la mésange huppée Parus cristatus, la mésange noire Parus ater et la mésange bleue Parus caeruleus, élevait de plus petites nichées et avait une plus longue durée de nidification. Les résultats ont aussi révélé que cette espèce est capable d’élever plus d’une nichée au cours d’une même saison de reproduction et apportent de nouvelles preuves du fait que c’est une espèce qui pratique la reproduction coopérative. Les parents participaient de façon équitable à l’élevage des jeunes, un signe de parenté directe chez cette espèce.

With climate change, habitat loss, and impoverish-ment of food sources, several species of bird are are threatened today. It is crucial to conserve the biodiversity in ecosystems but the conservation that requires an improved knowledge of these. In this paper, we propose a low-cost connected nest box that make photos of nestling and measures them weight with a load charge. Air temperature and humidity are also regularly controlled to follow environmental conditions and their impact on the nestling.

We analyze environmental determinants of roost site selection by tree gleaning passerines wintering in a Mediterranean montane oakwood at a craggy area of high variation in altitude and hill-shading pattern. We hypothesize that in temperate latitudes of cold winter climate, birds should spend the night in areas of low altitudes, higher temperatures, and higher solar radiation in order to minimize thermoregulation costs during resting time and to improve foraging conditions just before and after roosting. We study night occupation of woodland locations by the presence of feces in 159 wooden nest boxes (i.e., under identical controlled roosting situations). We employ GIS methods to quantify solar radiation at each location surrounding the nest boxes and data loggers to measure air temperature in the field. Birds prefer to roost in forest patches with higher solar radiation, where the period of light available for foraging is extended and thermoregulation costs during daytime are minimized. They also selected woodland patches with taller trees, a pattern consistent with their foraging preferences for trunks and branches. Other environmental variables played a negligible role in determining the selection of roost sites. Here, we show, for the first time, the importance of sun radiation determining where to spend the night in wintering birds and call attention on considering the thermal space in forest management. Forest management should preserve woodland patches with taller trees more exposed to solar radiation to enhance winter habitat suitability for birds in these Mediterranean oakwoods.

This is especially true for ''naïve" birds that have evolved in the absence of terrestrial predators in island ecosystems. The American mink (Mustela vison) has recently established a feral population on Navarino Island (55°S), southern Chile, where it represents a new guild of terrestrial mammal predators. We investigated the impact of mink on ground-nesting coastal waterbirds with the aim of deriving a vulnerability profile for birds as a function of different breeding strategies, habitat, and nest characteristics. Hatching success in birds is influenced by the temperature and turning rate of the egg, but our understanding of the environmental factors that effect incubation temperatures and egg turning rates in birds is limited. Especially little is known of these effects for species that nest in burrows or crevices, such as the Cassin’s auklet (Ptychoramphus aleuticus). On Southeast Farallon Island, California, USA, a subset of the Cassin’s auklet (hereafter auklet) population nest in artificial nest boxes. The nest boxes are above ground and made out of a single layer of plywood. Temperatures in unshaded nest boxes can increase significantly with high ambient temperatures (to >358 C). mediate nest box temperatures, but the effects of elevated temperatures on auklet incubation behaviors and egg viability remain equivocal. We used egg data loggers to measure the temperatures and turning rates of auklet eggs in natural burrows, shaded nest boxes, and unshaded nest boxes on Southeast Farallon Island. Nest box (13.93

+-1.92 C) temperatures were highest and most variable in unshaded nest boxes. Mean hourly egg turning rate was 2.11+- 2.02 turns/hour and turning rates were greater
at night. Egg turning rates also varied with fluctuating nest and egg temperatures, being positively correlated with nest temperatures during the day and negatively correlated with egg temperatures during the night. Our results suggest that nest box design can influence incubation behaviors of breeding birds. As seasonal temperatures and the number of extreme heat events rise, understanding the impacts of temperature on
auklets nesting in artificial nests can have positive implications for conservation and management of the species, such as implementing improved artificial nest box designs to prevent overheating of burrow nesting seabirds.
