India's success in economic reforms spurred high growth rates, nevertheless; poverty, malnutrition and nutritional security remain serious and persisting concern. The present study examined the dynamics in intake of calorie, protein and fat over years and across provinces and also inequality, determinants and regional prioritization of nutrients consumption. The data extracted from various consumption survey reports of the National Sample Survey Office since 1972-73 to 2011-12 indicated that calorie intake in a majority of the states has witnessed significant changes and reduction over time. While, the intake of protein remained consistent, per capita fat intake increased with rural Punjab and rural Odisha being the highest and lowest consumers, respectively. The per capita fat consumption is higher in urban vis-a-vis rural. Variation (CV) and inequality (Gini coefficient) in calorie, protein and fat intake showed a declining trend across rural and urban. Regional prioritization (biplot) indicated a strong linkage between rural and urban for nutrient consumption. Regression analysis using panel data indicated that the nutrient intake in rural India is influenced positively by per capita expenditure on food items, household size and literacy rate, and negatively by poverty rate. The nutrients consumption level is low in a majority of states by any norms which gets reflected in the nutritional outcomes. Reduction in inequality and variation accompanied by an increase in intake can be achieved by increased spending on nutri-rich food items and per capita consumption of cereals and pulses.

The findings of the Employment and Unemployment Survey 2011-12 (68th round) reveal that over nine million persons found employment between 2009-10 and 2011-12. This was characterised by some sections of the media as a “rebound” from the stagnancy between 2004-05 and 2009-10. However, our analysis shows that the average growth in employment between 2004-05 and 2011-12 remains low at 2.5 million per year. The findings also reveal that a growing proportion of the workforce is moving to non-farm activities, and a falling proportion is engaged on a casual wage.

Right to Education (RTE) Act is intended to provide free and compulsory elementary education to all children aged 6–14 years. This article examines key constituents of elementary education in view of the RTE Act such as current attendance rate, types of institutions, medium of instruction, neighbourhood schools, Monthly per capita expenditure on elementary education (MPCEE)and incentives during pre- and post-RTE period using National Sample Survey Organisation’s 64th (2007–2008) and 71st (2014) round of unit level data. The result shows that far from the universalisation, exclusion is getting entrenched across gender, sector, and socio-religious and economic groups. Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the patterns and incidence of child labour in India and to examine the magnitude of child labour across different social groups. It analyses the impact of the socio-economic background of the children on their participation in the labour market.

Design/methodology/approach
The paper primarily relies on the data collected from secondary sources. The census of India data and the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) 66th round data (2009–2010) on employment and unemployment in India for the study. The dependent variable on child labour has been computed by the author for the analysis in the paper.

Findings
The findings of the paper suggest that poverty is not the only determinant of child labour, but gender and caste of a person is also a significant factor for child labour. The study found that children from lower-caste backgrounds in India seem to participate more in the labour market. In terms of gender, the study found that boys are more likely to engage in economic activities or paid jobs while girls are more likely to engage in household activities.

Originality/value
Data used in this paper has been extracted by the author from unit-level data provided by NSSO. The variables used for the analysis in the presented paper has been constructed by the author and the figures provided are the result of the author’s estimation on data.

Assessing the coverage and scope of ocean economy has been multifaceted and there has been an innumerous definition of the economic value of a natural resource, which has hindered the accounting of blue economy till date, but, the increasing importance to measure the ocean economy cannot be overlooked.
At this point, however, there is no agreed scope and coverage of the ocean economy nor is there an agreed operational definition of the variables needed for its measurement, but as per the need of the time, it is important to place a value on the oceans because when we do not place an economic value on environmental amenities, we assume the value of the amenity is zero. The linkage of physical flows to economic transactions ensures a consistent comparison of environmental costs with economic benefits, or environmental benefits with economic costs. A number of countries have attempted to measure the ocean economy based on their needs and perceptions.
In this study the authors have attempted to estimate the contribution of the blue economy in India utilizing the data which are majorly available in the public domain. The paper attempts to compute the share of the blue economy in India’s context.

Total waste generated in urban India is increasing at a rate higher than urban population growth. In such a situation the poor public provision for collection and disposal of household waste is becoming more and more conspicuous. Unscientific and careless handling and disposal of waste is causing adverse impacts on the environment and therefore health of the people. As the situation rests garbage disposal in most urban areas of India is the responsibility of local governments. In such a situation private informal activities provide essential relief by functioning at various stages of the garbage disposal process. Agents at various stages of the process either provide better service or simply provide a service where there is none. In case of the latter the informal recycling and re-use process has emerged as an important and by no means inefficient system. This private activity not only prevents a large portion of the waste from landing up in overloaded and unsanitary landfills but at the same time it provides cheap inputs for recycling firms operating in the formal sector. Good environment policy therefore would be one that creates conditions where such activities can increase by themselves. Given current conditions greater government role-as provider of garbage removal services or as a regulator-will only harm the cause of a clean environment and universal coverage of garbage removal services. Instead recognizing the importance of individual initiative and designing policy around it will serve to enhance both-the environment and coverage.

Correcting for an error in method, it can be shown that the National Sample Survey Organisation had underestimated employment in 2009-10 by over 4 million. The number of jobs created between 2009-10 and 2011-12 was over 9.35 million and not 13.9 million, over 30% less than what has been claimed.
