Musar Movement In Lithuania

This article is part of a roundtable discussion on Sharing the Burden: Rabbi Simḥah Zissel Ziv and the Path of Musar.  Responding to Christian Miller, I consider the tensions found in Simḥah Zissel Ziv's view of the soul, how Simḥah Zissel sees human beings as inclining toward evil, and how he tends to recommend measures that are more demanding than those typically tested by psychological researchers. Responding to Andrea Dara Cooper, I pay particular attention to Cooper's question regarding the tension between Simḥah Zissel's expansive view of fellowship and his lack of support for his family, and focuses on the constructions of gender that produce this tension. Responding to Jeffrey Pugh, I explore the clear limits to Simḥah Zissel's tolerance for criticism, questions, and disobedience. Responding to Rebecca Todd Peters, I consider various ways in which Simḥah Zissel's legacy has been appropriated, and I give particular attention to ways that his thought has been used to support critical thinking about structural injustices and social change.

Recent years have seen the flourishing of research on Lithuanian Kabbalists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to the point that some scholars speak of a defined and delineated stream of Kabbalah, a school unto itself dubbed "Lithuanian Kabbalah." Such scholars include within this stream all those who saw the Vilna Gaon as their teacher in Kabbalah (parallel to the position of the Baal Shem Tov in Hasidism) and they ascribe to it such fixed categories as its "Articles of Faith." In their conception, this stream was part and parcel of the broader and well-known nationalist-messianic current that had its source, supposedly, in the Vilna Gaon himself; this current reached its full fruition in the twentieth century, and so too has the smaller stream within it, now a clearly defined "school," developed in various ways until the present. As if this were not enough, scholars have joined the later ideological trend which seeks to revise the history of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in a decidedly messianic way, presenting it in a continuous line from the Vilna Gaon to the emergence of Zionism and then to the founding of the State of Israel. Again, the Vilna Gaon is not merely presented as a "herald" of Zionism but as one who encoded within his Torah the secret of redemption, the beginning of which, apparently, we are witnessing today. The article conducts a critical analysis of the concept of "Lithuanian Kabbalah," and uses as its case study the life and teachings of Rabbi Shimon Tsvi Horowitz.


בשנים האחרונות צומח ועולה מחקר סביב למקובלים בני ליטא במאות התשע עשרה והעשרים, עד שיש כאלו המדברים על זרם מוגדר ומובחן, אסכולה בפני עצמה, המכונה 'קבלה ליטאית'. בתוך זרם זה כוללים את כל אלו שראו בגר"א את מורם בקבלה, כמעין בעש"ט לחסידות, ומונים קטגוריות מקובעות של 'עיקרי אמונה' של אותו זרם הרוכב על מהלך משיחי ולאומי ידוע שמקורו כביכול בגר"א עצמו והגיע לגמר בישולו במאה העשרים. עד שנוצר בעיני כמה חוקרים מעין 'חוג' ברור ומוגדר שמתגלגל באופנים שונים עד לימינו. אם לא די בכך, הרי שהמדברים על אותו זרם קבלי רוכבים למעשה על קו אידיאולוגי מאוחר שבא לפרש מחדש את ההיסטוריה של היישוב היהודי בארץ ישראל במאה התשע עשרה ברוח משיחית וליצור מעין המשכיות מימי הגר"א עד להופעתה של הציונות ולמאורעות שהתרחשו עם הקמת מדינת ישראל. שוב אין הגר"א מצטייר רק כ'מבשר' הציונות אלא כמי שצפן בתורתו את סוד הגאולה שאנו עומדים לכאורה בפתחה. המאמר עוסק בניתוח ביקורתי של המשוג "קבלת ליטאית" וכמקרה מבחן יש כאן דיון בדרכו של ר' שמעון צבי הורביץ

This essay explores how wisdom gleaned from the Musar movement may inspire and enrich Jewish vegan practices. It focuses on approaches to loving-kindness, compassion, empathy, and self-restraint found in the writings of some of the most prominent figures in the early generations of the Musar movement: Rabbi Simḥah Zissel Ziv of Kelm (1824-1898), Rabbi Natan Tzevi Finkel of Slobodka (1849-1927), and Rabbi Yeruham Ha-Levi Levovitz of Mir (1873?-1936).

In this article, I make some suggestions about how the legacy of the nineteenth-century Mussar movement might best guide contemporary Jewish practice.  I consider, in particular, the Mussar movement's vision of how a broad range of practices can spur moral development, and how this model might apply to contemporary Conservative Judaism.

This paper explores how a variety of contemporary Jews have drawn on the ideas of the virtue-focused Kelm school of the Musar (Mussar) movement in formulating visions of how the Jewish tradition should best respond to poverty.  The paper begins by exploring perspectives on wealth and poverty in the thought of the 19th century founder of the Musar movement, Rabbi Israel Salanter, and his primary disciple, Rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv of Kelm.  I then turn to three contemporary perspectives on wealth and poverty that build on the legacy of Simhah Zissel’s Kelm school in very different ways: ultra-Orthodox rabbis who praise voluntary poverty and disdain commerce; an American rabbi and business consultant who has harnessed the ideas and practices of the Musar movement in offering a path to personal prosperity; and the development organization American Jewish World Service’s use of models from Kelm in its human-rights-focused anti-poverty work in India.

Scholarship on Ultra-Orthodox Jewish thought has traditionally assumed that the views of these communities derive from a struggle against the Jewish Enlightenment and Zionism, as well as against any values they identify as “modern.” This article challenges that assumption. Beginning with an examination of Ultra-Orthodox sources that present an image of the religious leader as the “ideal Jew,” the author then focuses on sources concerning the founder of the Slobodka Yeshiva in Lithuania. This rabbi intended his students to internalize “modern” norms found in the European honor culture of his time, while translating them into the language of Jewish Ultra-Orthodoxy. The author chooses to present his argument by tracing the image of the body in the Slobodka method, since it is precisely through the nexus of the body that Ultra-Orthodox Judaism was segregated from general European society and culture.

למרות שאיננה מוכרת במיוחד בציבור הרחב, תנועת המוסר היא אחת התנועות החשובות ביותר שהתפתחו באורתודוקסיה היהודית במזרח אירופה. היא הציבה את טיפוח ה'יראה', כלומר תיקון המידות ועיצוב האישיות לצד הערך של לימוד התורה. מורי התנועה הורו לעקור את המידות הרעות - הגאווה, הכעס, הקנאה, התאווה, העצלות ודומיהן - ולטעת במקומן מידות טובות: ענווה, סבלנות, 'עין טובה', הסתפקות במועט, זריזות וכיוצא בהן, וכל זאת בעזרת ספרי המוסר הקלסיים של המסורת היהודית. על אף הבסיס הרעיוני המשותף, הלכה התנועה והתגוונה ככל שרכשה אחיזה והשפעה בישיבות ליטא, ופיתחה זרמים שונים בעלי דגשים שונים - החל מזרם נובהרדוק הרדיקלי, בעל הדימוי ה"בוהמי", שחינך לחשד-עצמי פסימיסטי ולביזוי העולם הזה, וכלה בזרם סלובודקה בעל הדימוי ה"בורגני", שטיפח אופטימיות ומתינות הליכות. ספר זה הוא החיבור הראשון הבוחן את הגותם של אישי התנועה לכל אורך תולדותיה - מראשיתה בליטא של אמצע המאה ה-19 ועד לישראל של תחילת המאה ה-21, תוך עמידה על הרלוונטיות של השאלות שהעסיקו אותם לשיח הרעיוני הרחב יותר של ההגות היהודית.

This paper contrasts the thought of two Lithuanian rabbis: Rabbi Meir Simhah of Dvinsk (1843-1926) and Rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv of Kelm (1824-1898). The paper considers questions about the value of philosophical contemplation, how difficult moral transformation may be, whether acts of loving-kindness constitute the highest form of human spirituality, and how human beings may be compared with angels.

In this essay, I consider God as the ideal of compassion for all sentient beings. I ground this theology in the narrative of Moses’s encounter with God at the burning bush, as described in the third chapter of the Book of Exodus and in classical midrashic texts.

Grounded in the idea that God is a moral ideal that invites our continual reflection and growth, and drawing on the biblical narrative of the golden calf and the Platonic allegory of the cave, this essay considers how the words of the Kaddish may help Jews encounter God through the activity of study.

Rabbi Simhah Zissel Ziv of Kelme, Lithuania was one of the early leaders of the Musar (Mussar) Movement, a pietistic religious movement in 19th century Europe that attempted to place concerns with moral character at the center of Jewish life. This article introduces Simhah Zissel’s virtue-centered approach to the Torah’s central commandment that one “love one’s fellow as oneself.” For Simhah Zissel, love is a disposition of the soul, with emotional and intellectual aspects, culminating in action; love demands a sense of partnership with others and a sense of care which should extend to all of God’s creatures. Love demands a sense of partnership with others and a sense of care that should extend to all of God's creatures; love requires that we not privilege ourselves over other people; and the highest level of love is “sharing the burden of one’s fellow,” compassionate love characterized by empathy and responsiveness, which can only be cultivated through great effort.

R. Yaakov Moshe Harlap was a close student of R. Abraham Isaac Kook, but these scholars held opposite positions regarding the attitude which should be taken towards the Individual. Rav Kook appreciated the individual and encouraged self-confidence and personal development, whereas Rav Harlap encouraged self-subjugation. This contrast is manifest in their writings with regard to the place of the individual in the collective and the evil elements of man. The article discusses these different perspectives and notes the connection between these perspectives and the dissimilar biographical roots of these two scholars. Rav Kook's positive perception of man is rooted in his Lithuanian background, which held a certain affinity to ideas of the Enlightenment. Conversely, the roots of Rav Harlap's position lie in the traditional settlement of Jerusalem, where he grew up close to one of its ascetic figures, R. Zvi Michal Shapira. Moreover, R. Harlap was influenced there by the Musar movement, which opposed Enlightenment values. This clarifies an important aspect of the nature of the relationships within Rav Kook’s circle: it was not shared philosophical approaches that led to the strong connection between Rav Kook and Rav Harlap, but rather their independent psychological and religious experiences. This affinity generated a partnership that resulted later in a unique national-religious doctrine, the substantial philosophical differences between the two figures notwithstanding.

How does the Ultra-Orthodox literature describe the male body? What does the body represent? What is the ideal male body?
This book is a philosophical-theological journey about the different images of the male body in the Ultra-Orthodox literature after the holocaust.  The choice in the body as the center of the research comes from the fact that the body is the axis by which this community tries to understand its meaning and its role in life.
In the first part of the book, the writer explains the “problem of the body” and the different ways the Ultra-Orthodox theology deals with it. These different and even contradictory voices can teach the reader about the shifting of ideas inside the Ultra-Orthodox thought in the last decades. The second part of the book focuses on the image of the ideal body and describes how the rabbis train their bodies to reach ultimate form.

כיצד מתארת הספרות החרדית-ליטאית את הגוף הגברי? מה מסמל עבורה הגוף הגברי? איזה גוף גברי נחשב כאידאלי?

הספר הוא מחקר הגותי-פילוסופי על אודות דימויי הגוף הליטאי הגברי בדורות האחרונים. הבחירה בגוף כציר שדרכו נבחנת המחשבה הליטאית-חרדית נובעת ממעמדו המיוחד כמרחב שאינו מצוי בשליטה מוחלטת של האדם, ומכאן שדרכו יכולים לבוא לידי ביטוי כוחות בטבע האדם שהם יותר אנושיים ופחות מבטאים את דרישת האל. בדיקה של דימוי הגוף ומאפייניו פותחת צוהר להבנת הקיום האנושי הליטאי.

בחלקו הראשון של הספר המחבר מגדיר את "בעיית הגוף" ואת הדרכים להתמודד עמה, ומציג קולות שונים הרואים בגוף מרחב שדרכו האדם יכול להכיר את עצמו. חלקו השני עוסק בתיאורי הגוף האידאלי וכיצד הרבנים מאמנים את גופם להיות כזה. באמצעות התחקות אחר סיפורי ה"גדולים" (הצדיקים), נבחנות הדרכים שבהן מנהיגי הקהילה עיצבו את גופם מגיל צעיר, ואת יחסם אל גופם הבוגר ולעתים הנכה. כמו כן מתבררת פרשנות של קולות חרדים המהללים את הגוף ומבקשים לחקות את דימויו האירופאי האצילי בן הזמן. בפרקי המבוא נבחנות הסוגות הנידונות בספר: ספרות המוסר וספרות ה"גדולים" לאחר השואה, סוגות שהמחקר כמעט ולא עסק בהן עד כה.
