Modest Mussorgsky

The subject of this study is the dramaturgical and musical means used in the "scene of madness" in the opera "Boris Godunov", composed by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (Модест Петрович Мусоргский). The opera has two editorial offices, the first composed in 1869 and premiered in 1929, while the second one was composed in 1872 and premiered in 1874. At the time of its creation, the Mussorgsky defined the genre of this opera as a “four-act musical work”, which more precisely indicated the peculiarity of the piece both in relation to Pushkin's tragedy and also in relation to musical works. By avoiding words such as opera, plot, drama, the composer deliberately sought to avoid associations with the governing stereotypes in the operatic romantic spectacle.

Учебное пособие «Вокальные циклы в русской классической музыке XIX века» —совместная работа выдающегося отечественного музыковеда, доктора искусствоведения, профессора Ленинградской-Санкт-Петербургской государственной консерватории Екатерины Александровны Ручьевской (1922-2009) и ее коллеги, доцента Наталии Ивановны Кузьминой. Авторами подробно рассматривается теоретическая проблематика вокального цикла как жанра и формы на материале русской камерно-вокальной музыки XIX века, анализируются вокальные циклы А. А. Алябьева, М. И. Глинки, П. И. Чайковского, Н. А. Римского-Корсакова, М. П. Мусоргского. Издание адресовано студентам музыковедческого и вокального факультетов, а также обучающимся по другим специальностям, специалистам в области анализа музыкальных произведений и всем интересующимся русской музыкой XIX века. Публикуется впервые.

Die zu Mussorgskis Lebzeiten unpubliziert gebliebenen
»Bilder einer Ausstellung« wurden in ihrer originalen Klavierfassung
noch lange nach dem Tod des Komponisten stiefmütterlich
behandelt. Heute gehören sie zu den weltberühmten Standardwerken
der russischen Musik des späten 19. Jahrhunderts. Durch
ihre einzigartige Beziehung zwischen Musik und Malerei wie auch
durch ihre ungewöhnliche, weit ins 20. Jahrhundert vorausblickende
Tonsprache haben die »Bilder einer Ausstellung«
bis heute nichts von ihrer Faszination eingebüßt.
Christoph Flamm stellt die Entstehung und Gestalt des Klavierwerks
in das Zentrum dieser Werkeinführung. Er diskutiert den
Einfluss von Mussorgskis Freunden, des Künstlers Viktor
Hartmann und des Kunstkritikers Wladimir Stassow, und die
Frage nach den bildlichen Zuordnungen und poetischen Inhalten.
Schließlich thematisiert er die Rezeption, die kulturgeschichtliche
Bedeutung und die inhaltlichen Dimensionen des Zyklus.

Одним из белых пятен в наследии М. П. Мусоргского является участие композитора в создании романса «Письмо после бала». Романс исполнялся и был издан как сочинение певицы Д. М. Леоновой, но на протяжении многих лет в исследовательской литературе высказывались сомнения относительно этого авторства. Из-за отсутствия каких-либо документальных свидетельств, гипотеза оставалась гипотезой. Летом 2017 года в фондах ВМОМК имени М. И. Глинки (ныне — Российский национальный музей музыки) автором статьи был выявлен полный автограф этого сочинения, принадлежащий руке Мусоргского. Тем самым было найдено недостающее ключевое звено, позволяющее существенно уточнить вопрос. В статье собраны все известные исторические свидетельства о бытовании романса, описан и проанализирован его автограф. Кроме того, сочинение рассмотрено в контексте творчества Мусоргского.

The role of Modest Mussorgsky in a work on the romance “A letter after the ball” is one of the less known page of the composer’s activities. The romance was performed and published as a composition by a singer Darya Leonova, but within many years researchers were being doubt in this authorship. Because of lack of any documentary evidences, hypothesis remains hypothesis. In summer 2017 in collections of the Glinka National Museum Consortium of Musical Culture (the Russian National Museum of Music now) author of the paper found the full autograph of the romance written by Mussorgsky. Therefore, very important missing source on the romance was appeared and let us make the question clearer. The paper presents the whole historical information on the romance, its manuscript is descripted and analyzed. Also, the work is put in the context of the Mussorgsky’s creative legacy and considered among his vocal compositions.

The article is a continuation of the author’s reflections on the phenomenon of musical polymorphism (the beginning s in No. 1–2, 2018; the continuation is in No. 4, 2019). Stravinsky’s use of the environment, event, space, motion, dissonance, janus morphemes is considered as an inheritance of a tradition dating back to the work of his great predecessors. The musical tableau “Sadko” by Rimsky-Korsakov, the introduction “Dawn on the Moscow River” from Musorgsky’s “Khovanshchina” and Borodin’s symphonic poem “In the Steppes of Central Asia” are a clear confirmation of this. The multielement polymorph of Musorgsky’s “Dawn on the Moscow River” formed the basis of the first tableau in Stravinsky’s “Petrushka”.

Подробно рассматривается замысел и работа композитора над симфонией на две русские темы (1834) и симфонией «Тарас Бульба» (1848–1856). Выявляется их прямая соотнесенность со взглядами композитора на немецкую симфоническую традицию (модель цикла, тематизм, приемы развития). Проводится сравнительный анализ идей Глинки со взглядами на симфонию его современников (В. Ф. Одоевского, В. В. Стасова, М. А. Балакирева, П. И. Чайковского, М. П. Мусоргского, Н. А. Римского-Корсакова и других). Автор опровергает укоренившееся в отечественном музыкознании представление о постигшей Глинку в жанре симфонии неудаче, основанное лишь на незавершенности замыслов композитора. Впервые выявляется глубокое родство в понимании идеи симфонии и способах ее воплощения между Глинкой и его младшими современниками. Делается вывод о том, что Глинка в своем творчестве (в одночастных и циклических
произведениях) наметил не один, как всегда считалось, а два основных пути развития русской симфонической музыки.

The article is devoted to highlighting the role of M. I. Glinka in the
creation of the Russian symphony. Glinka’s intent and work on symphonies on two Russian themes (1834) and "Taras Bulba" (1848–1856) are dealt with extensively. Their direct correlation with the composer’s views on the German symphonic tradition (cycle’s model, thematism and techniques of development) is revealed. A comparative analysis of Glinka’s ideas with views on the symphony genre of his contemporaries (V. F. Odoevsky, V. V. Stasov, M. A. Balakirev, P. I. Tchaikovsky, M. P. Musorgsky, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, and others) is
carried out. Author refutes deeply entrenched in the Russian musicology idea about Glinka’s failure in the symphonic genre, which is based solely on the fact that his intentions were not completed entirely. Close сorrelation between the understanding an idea of the symphony and its implementation by Glinka and his younger contemporaries is revealed for the first time. It is concluded that Glinka paved (in his one-part and cyclical works) not one, as it was always thought, but two main ways of development of Russian symphonic music.

Статья посвящена истории несостоявшейся постановки оперы М. П. Мусоргского «Хованщина» в оркестровке Б. В. Асафьева. На основе архивных документов из фондов Российского государственного архива литературы и искусства, Российского национального музея музыки, Центрального государственного архива литературы и искусства Санкт-Петербурга, Музея Большого театра России, многие из которых вводятся в научный оборот впервые, изучены обстоятельства, при которых опера планировалась к постановке в Государственном академическом театре оперы и балета в Ленинграде (ныне — Мариинский театр). Приводятся фрагменты из протоколов заседаний Художественного совета оперы при ГАТОБ, посвященных обсуждению репертуара театра на ближайшую пятилетку, переписки Б. В. Асафьева и П. А. Ламма, рукописи О. П. Ламм «П. А. Ламм. Опыт биографии» и других неопубликованных архивных документов. Автор статьи приходит к выводу, что постановке «Хованщины» М. П. Мусоргского в оркестровке Б. В. Асафьева на сцене ГАТОБ препятствовали сложные социально-политические обстоятельства 1930-х годов, в то время как существующие предположения о творческой неудаче асафьевской оркестровки оперы не находят однозначного подтверждения ни в исторических свидетельствах, ни в сохранившемся автографе партитуры.

This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of
composers and musicians known as the moguchaya kuchka, or The Mighty Five, sought to influence Russian
culture and develop a "pure" school of Russian music amid rampant westernization. Comprised of César Cui,
Alexander Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, this group of inspired
musicians opposed westernization and supported Official Nationalism by the incorporation of folklore, local
village traditions, and promotion of their Tsar as a supreme political leader. In particular, the works of
Balakirev, Cui, and Mussorgsky established cultural pride and contributed to Russian nationalism. Through
studying the works and cultural context of these three influential composers, one can gain both a better
understanding of the essence of Russian Official Nationalism in the nineteenth century and an enriched
appreciation for the prevalent Russian musical styles and compositional techniques that were employed to
achieve a unique "Russian" sound.

Stravinsky’s use of the environment, space, motion, dissonance, and Janus morphemes is considered as his inheritance from a tradition dating back to the work of his great predecessors. The musical tableau Sadko by Rimsky-Korsakov, the prelude Dawn on the Moscow River to Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina, and Borodin’s symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia are a clear confirmation of this. In Sadko Rimsky-Korsakov reveals himself as the founder of musical polymorphism, which is a historical alternative to the Austro-German classical symphonism, Liszt’s monothematicism, and Wagner’s leitmotivism. Rimsky-Korsakov’s adherence to polymorphic methods of developing his musical material has clear roots in folklore. Those roots can also be traced just as clearly in Mussorgsky’s Dawn on the Moscow River. Mussorgsky’s masterpiece is stripped of all remplissage, all transitions, and contains only what is most essential and significant. And at the same time it has consistent polymorphism, penetrating into all levels of the musical fabric, and across-the-board variation in the melody, harmony and texture. The multi-element polymorphism of Dawn on the Moscow River forms the basis of the first tableau in Stravinsky’s Petrushka. The growing chaos of Shrovetide Fair is brought to life by means of textural condensation, a gradual transformation of the musical fabric from multi-elemental and polymorphic into sonorous and coloristic.

Il vecchio castello is the movement that is most modal amongst all of the pieces gathered in the Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition orchestrated by Maurice Ravel in 1922. In fact, it is known that Musorgsky’s musical painting was intended to depict the scene of a troubadour in the act of singing a song in front of a Medieval castle. As far as the orchestration by Ravel is concerned, the composer assigned the main melody to the alto saxophone. The result is a troubadour with a modern and cutting edge voice. This could be defined an ingenious timbral anachronism: his decision to set an instrument born from the nineteenth-century technological revolution in the mists of Medieval times. Moreover, Ravel’s choice can be seen in the light of musical neo-classicism. First Musorgsky’s and then Ravel’s gaze is turned to the past. Amongst the various cases in which neo-classical precepts are applied, Vinay pulls out that of the ‘evocation of a ‘classical’ season, understood to be a mythical age of purity and linguistic transparency’ . Nevertheless, ‘despite the fact that the motive of inspiration and the stylistic and linguistic peculiarities […] can be seen as typically neoclassical qualities, Ravel’s style absorbs and entirely transfigures the past into the present (for example, in the Tombeau de Couperin), and therefore that sense of fracture which […] is the soul itself of neoclassical music’ cannot be found.  Ravel’s act of ‘absorption and transfiguration’ works perfectly in the case of the ‘traditionalism’ of Il vecchio castello, where the saxophone reinterprets an old idiom with a contemporary voice, rather than creating an element of fracture. In this way, that which could have caused a historical short circuit within the text, becomes instead its showpiece, the choice that makes the difference.

O presente artigo analisa como uma tradução pode funcionar como chave para o conhecimento do objeto dinâmico, e não como mera transcodificação da obra original, tendo como exemplo a obra Quadros de uma exposição, de Modest Mussorgsky. Na primeira seção, serão discutidos os conceitos museológicos de Waldisa Rússio e André Desvaillées, justificando que a obra de Mussorgsky não é uma tradução intersemiótica dos quadros de Viktor Hartmann, mas da experiência museológica. A seguir, em diálogo com Walter Benjamin, será discutida a tradução como forma de acesso à realidade na medida em que revela facetas antes ocultas do objeto representado pelo original. O artigo se conclui com a demonstração de que os signos icônicos são fundamentais à multiplicação sígnica, ilustrada com exemplos retirados de Quadros de uma exposição, uma reflexão sobre a possibilidade como dimensão do real e uma reflexão sobre a co-autoria do intérprete-fruidor nos processos artísticos, que além de representar objetos, são capazes de criá-los.

Постановка «Хованщины» театром «Ла Скала» в 1933 году под управлением дирижера Витторио Гуи (1885–1975) стала хронологически второй на итальянской оперной сцене. При изучении сценических версий этой оперы в Италии, постановка 1933 года обычно оказывается в тени премьеры, состоявшейся в 1926 году. Однако спектакль под управлением В. Гуи был не рутинным возобновлением, а самостоятельным творческим высказыванием. За этот же семилетний период в Советском Союзе произошел большой научный и художественный сдвиг в области изучения и исполнения наследия М. П. Мусоргского в авторских версиях. П. А. Ламм, при поддержке Б. В. Асафьева, инициировал издание собрания сочинений Мусоргского, основанного на автографах композитора. Вышли в свет первые тома этого собрания, включая клавир и партитуру оперы «Борис Годунов» и клавир оперы «Хованщина». Было осуществлено несколько постановок и концертных исполнений «Бориса Годунова» по нотным материалам в редакции Ламма. Упомянутые события стали своего рода противовесом к повсеместно распространенным творческим обработкам Н. А. Римского-Корсакова. В. Гуи знал о работе советских ученых, но не имел доступа к рукописи полной оркестровой партитуры «Хованщины», созданной Асафьевым. Поэтому дирижер осуществил собственную сценическую редакцию оперы, взяв за основу партитуру Н. А. Римского-Корсакова, но изменив ее структуру, а в отдельных фрагментах также оркестровку и тональный план. Целью этих изменений была попытка приблизить постановку к оригинальному замыслу Мусоргского.

The 1933 production of Khovanshchina at La Scala conducted by Vittorio Gui (1885–1975) was chronologically the second one on the Italian opera stage, the first being the 1926 premiere. In studying the Italian productions of Khovanshchina, the 1933 stage version is usually overshadowed by the premiere; however, the performance under V. Gui’s direction was not a remake, but an independent work of artistic expression. The period of seven years between the first and second Italian productions marked a significant shift in academic and artistic attitudes to studying and performing author’s versions of M. P. Mussorgsky’s legacy in the Soviet Union, as opposed to the creative arrangements by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, which up to that time had been considered the standard versions. Thus, P. A. Lamm, with the support of B. V. Asafyev, initiated the publication of Mussorgsky’s Complete Works based on the composer’s autographs. The first volumes of this collection were published, including the piano-vocal score and the full score of the opera Boris Godunov and the piano-vocal score of the opera Khovanshchina. Additionally, there were several productions and concert performances of Boris Godunov based on sheet music as revised by Lamm. V. Gui was aware of the work carried out by Soviet scholars but did not have access to the manuscript of the orchestral score of Khovanshchina created by Asafyev. For this reason, he created his own stage version of the opera, having built it upon Rimsky-Korsakov’s score but changed its structure and, in individual fragments — the orchestration and the tonal plan.

Статья представляет собой очерк деятельности В. Г. Каратыгина, связанной с изучением им наследия М. П. Мусоргского. Опираясь на архивные источники из фондов Российского государственного архива литературы и искусства, Российского национального музея музыки, а также на материалы периодики 1900–1910-х годов и нотные издания сочинений Мусоргского в редакции Каратыгина, автор приходит к выводу, что многие научные и художественные идеи музыковеда предвосхитили концепционные положения П. А. Ламма. Работы Каратыгина над произведениями Мусоргского следует оценить, с одной стороны, как серьезное отдаление от представлений Н. А. Римского-Корсакова в сфере редактирования музыки Мусоргского, а с другой стороны, как предвидение принципов академического издания сочинений композитора, которые заявили о себе несколько позже — в 1927–1928 годах, в деятельности П. А. Ламма и Б. В. Асафьева.

This article is an overview of V. G. Karatygin’s activities related to his study of M. P. Mussorgsky’s legacy. It is based on archival materials from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art and the Russian National Museum of Music, as well as the periodicals of the 1900–1910s, and Mussorgsky’s published music works edited by Karatygin. The author comes to the conclusion that many of Karatygin’s scholarly and artistic thoughts anticipated the conceptual ideas of P. A. Lamm. Karatygin’s works on Mussorgsky’s oeuvres should be assessed as, on the one hand, a serious separation from N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s ideas in the field of editing Mussorgsky’s music, and, on the other hand, as an anticipation of the principles of the academic edition of the composer’s Complete Works, announced a little later, in 1927–1928, in P. A. Lamm’s and B. V. Asafyev’s activities.

Автограф «Хованщины» М. П. Мусоргского рассматривается в статье в нескольких малоизученных аспектах: авторской структуры оперы и ее вариантности (шесть картин как отражение новаторской драматургии «Хованщины», пять актов как попытка привести ее к нормативам «большой оперы»), авторских и неавторских купюр и их атрибуции по почерку, орудиям письма и причинам возникновения. Впервые предпринимается исследование слоя помет и правок в автографе Мусоргского, принадлежащих Н. А. Римскому-Корсакову. Приводится свод утраченных или не найденных на настоящее время фрагментов авторского текста «Хованщины». Редакция Римского-Корсакова впервые рассматривается и как целостный текст, и как процесс, в том числе: документы-автографы, музыкальные и литературные (в частности, впервые анализируется корсаковское предисловие к первому изданию клавира оперы), история создания (приводится сводная хронологическая таблица), взгляды редактора на различные аспекты «Хованщины», от сюжета и либретто до созданных Мусоргским фрагментов партитуры. Выясняется особый статус таких партитур: они не подвергались купюрам, изменения нотного текста в них минимальны. При сравнении клавира и партитуры редакции по отношению к оригиналу (в частности, в отношении темпов) делается вывод о движении Римского-Корсакова в сторону автографа / The article considers the autograph of “Khovanshchina” by M. Mussorgsky in several aspects: author's structure of the opera and its variability (six scenes as a reflection of “Khovanshchina”’s innovative dramaturgy; five acts as an attempt to bring it to the standards of the “big opera”), author's and non-author's cuts and their identification by handwriting, writing tools and causes. The layer of marks and corrections belonging to N. Rimsky-Korsakov in Mussorgsky's autograph is being studied for the first time. A set of lost or not found yet fragments of the “Khovanshchina” author’s edition is given. For the first time, Rimsky-Korsakov's edition is considered both as an integral text and as a process including both musical and literary autograph documents (in particular, Korsakov's preface to the opera’s full score’s first edition is analyzed for the first time), the history of its creation (the chronological table of it is provided), the editor's views on various aspects of “Khovanshchina” from its plot and libretto to fragments of the score created by Mussorgsky. The special status of such scores is clarified: they were not subjected to cuts, changes in the score are minimal. When comparing the full score and the edited score in comparison to the original (in particular, concerning the tempo), the conclusion is made about Rimsky-Korsakov’s incline towards the autograph

The article deals with bookplates with portraits of M.Mussorgsky by graphic artists A.Kalashnikov, V.Pokatov, D.Becker in the period from 1967 to 2007. In addition to the characteristics of bookplates, special attention is paid to the themes of music in the works of these artists, in particular ex-libris with portraits of P.Tchaikovsky.

This article is devoted to the history of an unrealized stage performance of B. V. Asafyev's orchestral score for M. P. Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, and is based on archival documents, stored in The Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, The Russian National Museum of Music, The St. Petersburg Central State Archive of Literature and Art and The Museum of the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, most of which have introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time. The circumstances under which the opera was planned to be staged in The State Academic Theatre of Opera And Ballet in Leningrad (today-The Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg) have been studied. The fragments from the reports of the Artistic Council of Opera at The State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet meetings, the Correspondence between B. V. Asafyev and P. A. Lamm, the manuscript "P. A. Lamm. A biography" by O. P. Lamm and other unpublished archival documents are cited. The author comes to the conclusion that most attempts to perform Khovanshchina were hindered by the political ideological constraints of the 1930s, and the existing supposition that Asafyev's orchestral score was an artistic failure doesn't find clear affirmation, neither in the historical documents, nor in the existing manuscript of the orchestral score.

Интенсивность эпистолярного общения двух ученых в эти дни связана с активной работой Б. В. Асафьева по написанию статей для сборника «К восстановлению “Бориса Годунова” Мусоргского» и их редактированием по замечаниям П. А. Ламма. Публикация сборника была запланирована к премьере оперы в редакции П. А. Ламма и Б. В. Асафьева в ленинградском Государственном академическом театре оперы и балета, состоявшейся 16 февраля 1928 года. Среди всей корреспонденции особо выделяется письмо П. А. Ламма от 13 января с критикой первоначального текста статьи «Почему надо исполнять “Бориса Годунова” Мусоргского в подлинном виде?». Этот документ содержит многочисленные маргинальные пометы и комментарии прочитавшего ламмовские реплики Асафьева. Учитывая важность асафьевских доводов, также как и их эмоциональную составляющую, в постраничных сносках приводится не только фрагмент статьи, с которым у Ламма возникло несогласие, но также и текст асафьевских комментариев к конкретным ламмовским возражениям. Публикатором расшифрованы сокращения, безоговорочно исправлены описки, ошибки и иные неточности в текстах документов.

The present material introduces the previously unpublished correspondence between Boris Asaf'yev and Pavel Lamm dating from 13 January-2(?) February 1928. The intensity of both scholars' communication during those days was related to Asaf'yev's active work on the articles for the collection 'To the Restoration of Musorgsky's Boris Godunov' and on their revision in accordance with Lamm's criticism. The publication of the collection was scheduled for the première of the opera in the edition of Lamm and Asaf'yev at the Leningrad State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (GATOB), which took place on 16 February 1928. Lamm's letter of 13 January criticizing the original text of Asaf'yev's article 'Why Musorgsky's Boris Godunov should be performed in its original version?' stands out among the whole correspondence. This document contains Asaf'yev's numerous marginalia and comments referring to Lamm's observations. Taking into account the importance of Asaf'yev's reasons, as well as their emotional tone, in the footnotes to our article we have quoted not only the excerpts from the article that gave rise to Lamm's objections, but also Asaf'yev's comments to these objections. The editor has deciphered the abbreviations and corrected the slips of the pen, errors, and other inaccuracies in the texts of the documents.

The set of materials pertaining to Boris Asaf'yev's work on Modest Musorgsky's legacy consists of three interrelated parts: (1) introductory article; (2) the previously unpublished correspondence between Asaf'yev and Lamm from January-February 1928; (3) the first version of Asaf'yev's article 'Why Musorgsky's Boris Godunov should be performed in its original version?' On the basis of the archival materials from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, Russian National Museum of Music and the Museum of the Bolshoy Theatre, a large panorama of creative, scholarly and organizational problems is presented, which emerged in the beginning of 1928 during the period of active preparations for the première of Boris Godunov in the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (GATOB) and the work on the collection of articles 'To the Restoration of Musorgsky's Boris Godunov'. It is shown for the first time that the colleagues working on the 'restoration of authentic Musorgsky' entered into conflict, which would later lead to Lamm's refusal to accept Asaf'yev's orchestration of Khovanshchina (1931) and to the interruption of both scholars' work on the publication of Musorgsky's Complete Works.

The 1933 production of Khovanshchina at La Scala Theatre, conducted by Vittorio Gui (1885-1975), was the second time this opera was performed on the Italian opera stage. In studying the Italian productions of Khovanshchina, the 1933 stage version is usually overshadowed by the Italian premiere of this opera, which took place in 1926. However, Vittorio Gui made his own stage version of Khovanshchina, changing the structure, orchestration and tonal plan of the full score of this opera in Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's edition in order to get closer to Musorgsky's authorial text. The paper uses archival materials from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Russian National Museum of Music, the Archive of the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, and articles from Italian periodicals of the 1920s-1940s.

В статье в форме развернутых тезисов рассматриваются наиболее актуальные, с точки зрения автора, и до сих пор не решенные в музыкознании проблемы творчества М. П. Мусоргского, его творческого метода и стиля. В частности, это: вопрос оценки и восприятия позднего творчества Мусоргского, его фортепианных сочинений (за вычетом «Картинок с выставки»), особенности композиторского метода, в том числе устойчивость музыкального материала и его перенос из одного произведения в другое или другие (от отдельных тем до разделов композиции). Автором предлагается понятие константной музыкальной лексемы как отражения характерной для Мусоргского типизации жизненных явлений. В новом аспекте также рассматривается рукописное наследие: выявляются специфические для Мусоргского критерии законченности / незаконченности сочинения; в противовес сложившимся представлениям о творческом процессе композитора выдвигается гипотеза о важной роли черновиков (эскизов) // The article contains detailed theses of the most relevant, in the author's view, and yet unresolved problems in musicology: M. Musorgsky's works, his creative method and style. In particular it is the issue of assesment and perception of Mussorgsky's late works, his piano compositions (with the exception of "Pictures at an Exhibition"), characteristics of the composer's method, including the stability of musical material and its transfer from one piece to another or other pieces (specific themes or composition's section). The author invites a concept of a constant musical lexeme as a reflection of a typical for Mussorgsky typification of life phenomena. From this new perspective the author also reassesses the manuscript heritage: specific to Mussorgsky criteria of composition's completeness / incompleteness are identified; counter to the prevailing ideas about the composer's creative process hypothesis about the importance of drafts (sketches) is being advanced

This article is devoted to the most stylistically original and artistically significant orchestral work by M.P. Mussorgsky, St. John’s Eve on Bald Mountain. The subject matters of the article are an examination of the background and history of this artwork’s creation, review of its creative sources, attribution of an autograph, and textological characterization of marginal marks in the score, while the goal is to form a new perspective of the research based on the deciphering of many intricate, complex and even mysterious circumstances associated with this orchestral opus. Particular attention is paid to the appearance of two author’s editions of the artwork; moreover the second of them arose as a result of harsh criticism of M.A. Balakirev, who insisted on a radical adaptation of the score. The autograph of the second author’s version has been preserved, while the first author’s version can only be reconstructed hypothetically. / Статья посвящена стилистически наиболее самобытному, художественно самому значительному оркестровому сочинению М.П. Мусоргского «Иванова ночь на Лысой горе». Рассмотрение предыстории и истории создания, обзор творческих источников, атрибуция автографа, текстологическая оценка маргинальных помет в партитуре составляет предмет работы, тогда как целью является формирование новой исследовательской картины, основанной на расшифровке многих запутанных, сложных и даже загадочных обстоятельств, связанных с этим оркестровым опусом. Особое внимание уделено появлению двух авторских редакций сочинения, причем вторая из них возникла в результате жесткой критики М.А. Балакирева, настаивавшего на коренной переделке сочинения. Автограф второй авторской редакции сохранился, тогда как первая авторская редакция может быть реконструирована лишь гипотетически.

The title of Burenin's work refers to two of his contemporaries, the composers Cesar Antonovich Cui (1835-1918) and Modest Petrovich Musorgsky (1839-1881). The Russian text, from an edition of 1889, is presented with a parallel English translation, and with annotations, by Lyle K. Neff.

This article is devoted to the history of an unrealized stage performance of B. V. Asafyev's orchestral score for M. P. The history of studying the authorial versions of Modest Musorgskij's œuvre: The late 19th and first third of the 20th century. PhD Dissertation

ENGLISH ABSTRACT
This dissertation is devoted to the studies of Modest Musorgskij's legacy in the authorial versions from the end of the 19th century to 1939. The first volume (270 pages), the study itself, contains an introduction, six chapters, a conclusion, illustrations, bibliography, and lists of abbreviations, archival sources, and illustrative material. The second volume (570 pages) includes transcribed and commented archival documents: epistolary, scholarly and creative materials, translations of writings by foreign musicians about Musorgskij, and a list of Musorgskij's works, compiled by Vâčeslav Karatygin. The chapters of the dissertation are structured chronologically. The first two consist of a chain of monographic essays on the activities of individual musicians in studying and disseminating Musorgskij's legacy in the authorial versions. Chapter 3 presents a chronology of the initial period of Pavel Lamm’s work on the edition of the piano-vocal score of the opera Boris Godunov, based on archival documents. Chapter 4 is dedicated to the first performances of Boris Godunov, in the edition by Lamm and Boris Asaf'ev, both in the Soviet Union and abroad. Chapters 5 and 6 of the dissertation are devoted to the work on the opera Hovanŝina. The basis for the conclusions was an extensive documentary base collected in the course of the work. Many of the sources are either being researched for the first time, or are known in full for the first time, without the censorship cut-outs of Soviet times. This statement applies most strongly to the fully transcribed and commented correspondence between Asaf'ev and Lamm (138 letters), given in the second volume of the dissertation. The ideas presented might be continued in the studies of such areas as: the history of the development of Russian music scholarship and performance, the history of the study of authorial versions of Musorgskij's works in the second half of the 20th century, the reception of Musorgskij's works in Russia (USSR) and abroad, the development of principles of academic music editing and publishing, and the expansion of the documentary base of music source study and textual criticism.

Диссертация посвящена истории изучения наследия М.П. Мусоргского в авторских версиях в период с конца XIX по 1939 год. Работа состоит из двух томов, Первый том (270 страниц) – собственно исследование – содержит введение, шесть глав, заключение, иллюстрации, списки аббревиатур, литературы, архивных источников и иллюстративного материала. Во второй том (570 страниц) входят расшифрованные и прокомментированные архивные документы – эпистолярий, материалы творческой и служебной деятельности, переводы работ иностранных музыкантов о Мусоргском, список сочинений М.П. Мусоргского в редакции В.Г. Каратыгина. Главы диссертации построены по хронологическому принципу. Первые две – состоят из цепи монографических очерков, посвященных деятельности отдельных музыкантов по изучению и распространению наследия Мусоргского в авторских версиях. В 3-й главе на основе архивных документов изложена хронология начального периода работы П.А. Ламма по подготовке к изданию клавира «Бориса Годунова». 4-я глава посвящена первым исполнениям оперы «Борис Годунов» в редакции П.А. Ламма и Б.В. Асафьева, как в Советском Союзе, так и за рубежом. 5-я и 6-я главы диссертации посвящены работе над оперой «Хованщина».
Основой для выводов стала собранная в процессе работы обширная документальная база. Многие из источников либо вводятся в научный оборот впервые, либо впервые становятся известны полностью, без цензурных купюр советского времени. Это утверждение в наибольшей отепени относится к полностью расшифрованной и прокомментированной переписке Б.В. Асафьева с П.А. Ламмом (138 писем), приведенной во втором томе работы. Идеи, изложенные в диссертации, могут быть продолжены в исследованиях таких направлений, как: история развития отечественной музыкальной науки и исполнительства, истории изучения авторских версий сочинений М.П. Мусоргского во второй половине XX века, рецепция сочинений Мусоргского в России (СССР) и за рубежом, разработка принципов академического нотного редактирования и нотоиздательской деятельности, расширение документальной базы музыкального источниковедения и текстологии.

I was commissioned to set Russian liturgical and poetic texts to Thomas Dausgaard's arrangement of "Pictures at an Exhibition" for chorus and orchestra. It was premiered by the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Radio Chorus in Örebro, Sweden on 3 May 2019, with an additional performance at the Stockholm Konserthuset on 4 May 2019.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Liszt and nineteenthcentury
Russian music.
It is well known that Liszt, during his concert tours, had many opportunities to
spread his name across Russia; the composers of the rising Russian national school
were deeply impressed by the Hungarian master, as some of Mussorgsky’s assertions
can demonstrate: «How many new worlds, perhaps, might have been discovered in
talks with Liszt, how many unknown corners we might have explored together; and
Liszt, by his nature, is daring and has no lack of courage, and […] it evidently would
not be diffi cult for him to take such an excursion with us into new lands». Such considerations
are signifi cant especially because they are provided by the leading innovator
of The Five, who probably wouldn’t have shown interest in conservative occidental composers.
On the other hand, Liszt himself was one of the fi rst European artists to praise
and to try to promote – for example – Glinka, Dargomyzhsky and Borodin’s works.
These revealing and unusual musical interests were not always shared by Liszt’s traditionalist
contemporaries. On this front, there is a document which narrates Liszt’s enthusiasm
towards Mussorgsky’s The Nursery: the letter by Adelaide von Schorn to the
Russian editor Bessel. Although Émile Haraszti and Màrta Papp demonstrated that this
epistle is a historical falsifi cation, nonetheless it might be useful to consider this document
as an echo of a real problem: the mutual attraction between Liszt and Russian
musicians. What is to determine is the quality of this relationship.
This research aims to examine Liszt’s output through two different levels:
1) the analysis of paraphrases and transcriptions of Russian works and melodies
