Moated Sites

The aim of this joint paper is to analyse the often conflicting archaeological, historical and literary evidence relating to the moated site at Cloonfree in Co. Roscommon in order to create a picture of how the site appeared during the time it was in use during the early 14th century. Questions both for future work at the site and for later medieval Ireland in general will also be formulated in the text.

In March 2016 Big Heritage C.I.C. and community volunteers undertook four evaluation trenches within the interior of the site known as Bromborough Courthouse Moated Site and Fishponds, Wirral (centred on NGR: SJ 34496 84189). These trenches were sited in an area previously archaeologically unexplored by Big Heritage or previous schemes of investigation. The site is a scheduled monument (SMR 13428). Permission was granted by the land owners, the Land Trust, and Historic England to undertake excavation. Dr Joanne Kirton, on behalf of Big Heritage C.I.C., was granted Scheduled Monument Consent (Ref:
S00131391). The excavation was monitored by Andrew Davison of Historic England. 

1.2. This work was undertaken in partnership with the Land Trust to assess the potential for survival of archaeological remains in areas of the site not previously investigated and to determine the nature and date of any features or finds recovered. This information will be used to inform future management strategies for the site and potential archaeological research projects.

The Mysteries of the Angkor Moat

Water, with its life-giving and purifying qualities, is central to Khmer cosmology and all varieties of Hindu religion. A moat is a deep, broad ditch, either dry or filled with water, that is dug and surrounds a castle, fortification, building or town, historically to provide it with a preliminary line of defence. In some places moats evolved into more extensive water defences, including natural or artificial lakes, dams and sluices. In older fortifications, such as hillforts, they are usually referred to simply as ditches, although the function is similar. In later periods, moats or water defences may be largely ornamental. They could also act as a sewer. Some of the earliest evidence of moats has been uncovered around ancient Egyptian castles. One example is at Buhen, a castle excavated in Nubia. Other evidence of ancient moats is found in the ruins of Babylon, and in reliefs from ancient Egypt, Assyria, and other cultures in the region.

IN 2006 a large oval earthwork dating form the early 11th century was discovered in a parcel of woodland near the hamlet of Appel in the Gelderse Valley in the Netherlands. Small scale trial trenches showed inside the earthwork traces of a settlement dating from the 11th to 16th century. Among the features was a sunken hut used for storage of grain and smithing and bronze casting. In the southern part of the enclosure a circular moat was found surrounding a parcel with a diameter of c 12 m. Finds from the maot suggest that on this parcel a brick and wooden towerlike building must have been erected in the 13th century. The building remained in use untill the (ealry) 16th century. In the area directly around the earthwork several rows of iron ore extraction pits were found.
The earthwork is possibly connected with the so called 'hof (curtis) of Appel' mentioned in the written sources from the second  half of the 10th century untill the 16th century. This curtis was owned by the counts of Hamaland and around 960 given to the abbey of Elten (presentday Germany).  In the vicinity of the earthwork the remains of the later curtis of Elten are located in a wooded area. A dirt road still connects the earthwork with this location.

Columbine Hall is rightly regarded as one of the cultural icons of Suffolk; its beautiful moated hall adorns the back cover of the new Pevsner guide to West Suffolk . This report gives both a history of this medieval house and an analysis of its structure.

It is part of general survey of the medieval fortresses of Midi-Pyrénées which started in 1994 and aims at evaluating the patrimony of this region. The main purpose was an inventory of fortresses such as mottes, castral platforms, moated sites and ringworks and so aristocratic residences as towers, salas and towers-salas. It shows the the souhern part of the Gers department witness the implantation of a number of fortified sites seigniorial and aristocratic residences between the X century and the XVI century. A list of more 320 sites, scattered over 10 cantons was thus drawn up. This work has been completed according to examinations of written documents. An historic work of the ancient county of Astarac and the seigniorial power has been realized to identify proprietary's statute. Informations from fielf researches and archival sources made possible an assessment of the populating and the county's organization.

L'étude des résidences aristocratiques dans l'ancien comté d'Astarac résulte de travaux réalisés entre 2003 et 2011. Elle s'inscrit dans l'enquête sur les forteresses médiévales de Midi-Pyrénées qui a débuté en 1994 et qui vise à procéder à l'évaluation du patrimoine régional. L'objectif principal a été d'inventorier les différentes formes de fortification liées à la résidence seigneuriale. Le corpus final, composé d'ouvrages de terre fortifiés (mottes, plates-formes et enclos fossoyés), de tours, salles et tours-salles, constitue la base de notre réflexion. Il ressort de cette enquête que le Gers méridional a connu l'implantation d'un grand nombre de fortifications seigneuriales et de résidences aristocratiques médiévales entre le Xe siècle et le XVIe siècle. Près de 320 sites, dispersés sur 10 cantons ont ainsi été répertoriés. Cette étude a été enrichie par le dépouillement des sources écrites disponibles. Un travail historique sur le comté d'Astarac et les seigneurs de cette zone, constituant l'aristocratie locale généralement peu évoquée dans les études analogues, a également été entrepris afin de mieux cerner le statut des propriétaires des habitats fortifiés repérés. Les informations recueillies sur le terrain et dans les sources consultées ont ainsi permis de réaliser un travail de réflexion sur le peuplement et l'organisation du territoire comtal astaracais.

The nearly 1,000 pipe fragments recovered from the 1995-7 excavations at the Tower of London provide a good sample of London pipes, especially for the period from c1670-1845. These include a number of examples of Armorial and other decorative pipe designs, as well as marked pieces.  The combination of soft silts and tightly documented historical events has produced a well preserved and closely datable body of evidence. This has provided much new information about the production and changing styles of pipes in London as well as shedding light on their supply and use at the Tower. The nineteenth century groups are particularly valuable since good excavated deposits of this date are extremely rare in London. The recovery of three complete pipes has filled gaps in the evolution of stem lengths as well as suggesting a date for the introduction of curved stems. Two new bowl forms that should be added to the London typology have been identified, as has a new variant of the Prince of Wales feathers motif. An analysis of the bowl form and mark data has shown the relative frequencies with which these attributes occur and has shown that, during the eighteenth century, some 6.5% of the Tower pipes had armorial decoration. The use of internal bowl marks has been shown to be unconnected with the use of moulded makers' marks but it has been shown that there is a significant correlation between bowl form and the use of marks. In this respect the mark can be seen to be an integral element of a pipe's design and style.

Angkor Wat, also called the Temple City of Cambodia, is a timeless epitome of diverse religious and extraordinary architectural heritage. This stunning site expands over 200 hectares and is recognised as one of the largest temples ever built in history.

1. Firstly, the heavenly aura of the Angkor Wat made the locals believe that it was built by God Himself. But, the archaeologists found a different story. They dug into the history and figured that this was constructed by a young king of Yashodhara dynasty, Suryavarman-II.
2. The solar formula used for the construction of Angkor Wat is said to be based on  Shatapatha Brahmana, a Hindu text of Shukla Yajurveda.
According to Research, some solar numbers in the temple design represent the number of stars, days, months and lunar months explained in Hindu texts. Isn’t this a perfect amalgamation of knowledge and craftsmanship?

3. According to Hindu mythological texts, all temple constructions should follow standard          architectural norms. Contrary to the norm of facing east, Angkor Wat temple was built with its main entrance towards west. The evidence of Moated Forts and Palaces in the Indian literature can be dated back to the times of the Rigveda. The Rigveda mentions the forts by the names of ‘Satbhuj’ which translates to a hundred moats. These forts have been described as massive structures of earthwork, spread over large areas of land. The cities that were guarded within the walls of these forts were known as ‘Pur’.  Traces of the architecture forts in the ancient Vastudiya can also be found. The Dhanur Veda mentions the forts as Durgs(something difficult to trespass), classifying them into six categories. These include Naradurg(fort protected by men), Dhanvadurg(dessert fort),Mahidurg(mud fort), Jaladurg(water fort), Giridurg(hill fort) and the Vanadurg(forest fort).

Small manors owned by the nobility made up an inseparable part of the Czech landscape from the Middle Ages until the early modern age. Narrowly specialised chronological and typological studies do not provide a comprehensive picture of the past that, however, can be obtained through different manners of research. This contribution presents a novel insight into the subject of manors based on statistical data, and points out the possible use of different methods in their study. The methods are rooted in the description of the manors in terms of construction, space, chronology and ownership, as well as in the subsequent processing of the results by means of formalized methods.

Since the 1950s, medieval landscape archaeology has explored “designed landscapes,” landscapes which have been modified through human intervention to serve a particular purpose. The search for this purpose has led to the formation of three perspectives: landscape as aesthetic pleasure ground, landscape as place of work, and landscape as reflection of social status. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu and borrowing from spatial theory, I will critically explore and challenge the three dominant perspectives and the concept of designed landscapes themselves. I provide an alternate framework with which to explore the way that barriers and constraints on movement in physical space reflect boundaries in social space. Through geospatial modeling and topographical analysis of the landscape at Ightham Mote, a moated manor house in Sevenoaks, Kent, England, I illustrate how the topography of the landscape constrains movement and facilitates the creation of both a public and a private road. The control of access to the property by the creation of a private road renders Ightham Mote as privileged social space only open to some, and reinforces relational power dynamics which maintain hegemonic social hierarchies. Using this new approach, we can view the topography of landscapes as active agents in the reinforcement of social identities through control of movement through the landscape. Rather than labeling a landscape aesthetic or practical, we can identify the dynamism of landscapes and their active role in social relations.

Combining historic landscape analysis with freely available LiDAR data has revealed a forgotten medieval moated site. The results also identified the probable medieval site of Broadbridge Mill as well as highlighting the potential of this form of survey for Wealden site recognition.

This paper reports on the results of a comprehensive investigation of a two-part ditched enclosure from
the final part of the Early Middle Ages near Ledčice (Mělník distr.). The site discovered via aerial reconnaissance
was plough-walked, subjected to a geophysical survey and test excavated. The analysis of aerial
photographs and data from the aforementioned field methods has demonstrated the contemporaneity of
the two enclosures; pottery fragments date the site to the first half of the 13th century. In the context of
the current state of research on the settlements of early country lords, the Ledčice site represents a unique
situation with the complete ground-plan and size of such settlement (a two-part ditched enclosure as its
principal component) and also a few components outside the central feature.

The Rozprza stronghold functioned as a seat of a noble family since at least the early14 th century AD in the form of the motte-and-bailey residence. The remains of the residence are situated in the central part of mid-Luciąża River valley, on the river terrace remnant adjoining a strongly expanding floodplain. The situation and state of preservation give a unique opportunity to conduct research that explain the construction process, detailed history of the medieval moat and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the valley floor. Radiocarbon and dendrochronological dating and analysis of artefacts confirmed 14th century age of the moat. Organic deposits (gyttja, peat and organic mud) of moat fill allowed for a set of multiproxy analyses based on sediment cores. The research results indicate shallow water with brief episodes of in-wash in the first stage (13 th-14th c. AD), followed by a transformation into telmatic habitat in the second phase of the moat development from 16 th-17th c. AD. The deposition of overbank alluvium took place within the moat ditch system as late as the 18th and/or 19th c. AD. We studied the development of this moat environment in the context of valley floor changes.

Pendant l’hiver 2011 une fouille archeologique realisee en Sologne, pres de Romorantin a permis l’etude d’une occupation carolingienne diffuse, remaniee en un site fossoye medieval circulaire. Aucun emmottement n’a ete identifie, la plateforme centrale est a la meme altitude que les terres exterieures au fosse defensif. Occupee du XIe au XIIIe siecle, les comblements fouilles n’ont revele aucun mobilier marqueur d’un statut social elitaire. Toutefois la morphologie des vestiges indique bien une implantation qui peut correspondre aux toutes premieres strates d’une elite sociale medievale. Lors de changements climatiques entrainant des periodes d’inondations de plus en plus frequentes, le site est abandonne. Une occupation des XIVe-XVe a ete observee en peripherie du village, avec notamment une activite d’extraction d’argile qui devait fonctionner avec des ateliers de fabrication de materiaux de construction en terre cuite signales dans les archives.

In november 2005 werd in opdracht van de gemeente Sluis archeologisch onderzoek uitgevoerd in Schoondijke (gemeente Sluis) op de locatie Einsteinstraat. Het onderzoek en onderhavig rapport is tot stand gekomen door een samenwerking van ADC ArcheoProjecten en het VNC-project “Verdwenen cultuurlandschappen in het grensgebied van Vlaanderen en Nederland” van de Universiteit Gent (België) en de Universiteit Wageningen. In het plangebied langs de Einsteinstraat werd een industriezone uitgebreid. Deze bouwplannen zouden de aanwezige archeologische resten vernietigen.

Vooronderzoek heeft immers uitgewezen dat zich op deze plaats laatmiddeleeuwse bewoning bevond. Er werd een middeleeuwse omwalde hoeve verwacht. Historisch-geografisch onderzoek kon dit vermoeden reeds voor de start van de opgravingen bevestigen. De site werd geïdentificeerd als een niet bij naam genoemd hof met walgracht, zoals vermeld staat in de ommeloper van de Oude Yevenwatering uit 1550-’51. Ook de eigendomgeschiedenis gedurende de 16de eeuw kon in belangrijke mate gereconstrueerd worden.

Tijdens het archeologisch onderzoek kwamen resten aan het licht van een omgracht en deels ommuurd opperhof, en een neerhof met stalgebouw. Op het neerhof zijn onder andere een stalgebouw, enkele hooioppers, grachten, kuilen en een drenkput onderzocht. Het stalgebouw dat volledig werd blootgelegd dateert uit de eerste helft of het derde kwart van de 16de eeuw. Vondstmateriaal wees uit dat de site bewoond is geweest tussen de tweede helft 13de of 14de eeuw en de late 16de eeuw. De site, gelegen op enkele honderden meters ten noordwesten van de verdwenen dorpskom van Oud-Schoondijke, werd ontsloten door een netwerk van waterwegen en was gebouwd op de grens van akker- en grasland. Vermoedelijk werd de site onder de oorlogsdruk verlaten in het laatste kwart van de 16de eeuw (Tachtigjarige Oorlog,
1566-1648). Het landschap rond Oud-Schoondijke werd kort nadien door de Zeventien Provincies (Noordelijke Nederlanden) onder water gezet als verdedigingsmaatregel tegen het Spaanse leger onder Alexander Farnese. De jaren erop ontwikkelde het goed georganiseerde middeleeuwse landschap zich in een getijdenlandschap, waardoor de site en het omringende land grotendeels onder sedimentatie verdween. Pas omstreeks 1650 werd de omgeving opnieuw bewoonbaar.

Historische gegevens en een greep uit het schaarse vondstmateriaal wijzen erop dat de bewoners van het opperhof tot de hogere lagen van de middeleeuwse samenleving behoorden. Diverse gegevens geven aan dat men zich met ambachtelijke taken, landbouw en veeteelt bezig hield. Of hierbij alleen voor eigen gebruik of ook voor commerciële doeleinden is geproduceerd, is niet duidelijk. De veestapel werd wellicht voornamelijk voor melkproductie gehouden, getuige de vele melkteilen die zijn gevonden. Resten van zaden tonen aan dat in de omgeving vlas en granen werden verbouwd en verwerkt.

Siete años de prospecciones han permitido localizar más de 200 emplazamientos señoriales de diferentes tipos en Astarac, un antiguo condado de Gascuña situado aproximadamente a 100 kilómetros al oeste de Toulouse. Las formas de fortificación son diversas: desde la construcción señorial de tierra y madera hasta la residencia fortificada de piedra de tipo sala. Algunos ejemplos de este condado y del sur-oeste de Francia serán evocados. Los estudios históricos, arqueológicos y arquitectónicos de estos sitios permiten establecer algunas dataciones situadas entre el siglo X y el siglo XIV.

This paper draws attention to the use of moats for defence and drainage on earthwork sites. It reviews the evidence for mottes in Scotland and notes problems where geomorphological features previously identified as mottes have been declassified or reclassified. It presents a brief review of the history of investigation of moated sites and ringworks. A selected list of castle sites in north-eastern Scotland is offered, noting evidence for moats or ditches. Nineteenth and early twentieth century research combined topology with a study of the histories of the families associated with the sites. It is proposed that findings of such research correspond with what Lévi-Strauss has called “house societies” and that moated sites and mottes served to express the dynasties’ status and the transmission of their names. More archaeological evidence is required, particularly of moated sites, to complement the emphasis given to mottes.

Les travaux entrepris cette année dans le canton d’Auch sud-ouest ont permis de répertorier en majorité des résidences élitaires bâties nommées salles dans les sources écrites consultées, et repérées en grand nombre au nord du département . La plus ancienne salle repérée dans les textes, malheureusement disparue, remonte au milieu du XIIIe siècle. Les salles encore visibles, construites en moellons de calcaire local parfaitement assisés, sont à dater des alentours du XIVe siècle, alors que les autres salles semblent être modernes (XVI-XVIIe siècle). Les ouvrages de terre fortifiés sont apparus en faible nombre dans le canton d’Auch sud-ouest. Seules les mottes du village de Durban sont encore visibles et l’une d’elles supporte les vestiges de l’ancien château comtal à dater du XIIe et de la fin du XIIIe ou XIVe siècle. Le secteur d’étude a connu l’implantation d’un grand nombre de villages fortifiés au cours du XIIIe siècle : 6 castelnaux et 2 bastides ont ainsi vu le jour. Ils démontrent le dynamisme et le changement de mentalité des seigneurs dominants (pouvoir comtal et ecclésial) à cette période . La présence de la ville d’Auch à proximité pourrait avoir un rapport avec cette mise en défense des villages.

Plusieurs résidences seigneuriales ont été étudiées. Le château de Mazères, résidence des archevêques d’Auch depuis la fin du XIIIe siècle, est le plus imposant et le mieux conservé des bâtiments seigneuriaux, même s’il a connu diverses transformations durant la période moderne. Les remaniements ont également totalement dénaturé le bâtiment seigneurial d’origine de Nux dont les assises encore visibles sont à dater des XIII-XIVe siècles. Il en va de même pour le site de Château Vieux où les vestiges d’un bâtiment du XIIe siècle sont apparus, noyés dans une construction des XVI-XVIIe siècles. Les destructions de bâtiments seigneuriaux ont été nombreuses dans le secteur, comme en témoigne la disparition du château comtal de Pavie mentionné à la fin du XIIIe siècle et encore attesté à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

Enfin l’étude des enclos fossoyés permet à présent de distinguer les sites fortifiés médiévaux des aménagements modernes liés au désir d’organiser le paysage aux abords des habitats. Les enclos circulaires et ovales répertoriés sont à mettre en rapport avec une occupation médiévale (XIIe-XIVe siècles), alors que les enclos quadrangulaires installés à différentes périodes (médiévales ou modernes) renvoient à des fonctions diverses. Un nombre non négligeable de sites reste impossible à classer (près de 30%) par manque de données et seule une enquête approfondie pour chacun d’entre eux permettrait de connaître leur(s) fonction(s), certains sites pouvant appartenir aux périodes antérieures au Moyen Age .

Le canton d’Auch sud-ouest a donc connu l’implantation de résidences fortifiés comtales et archiépiscopales aux XIIe (Durban) et XIIIe siècles (Lasseube-Propre, Mazères, Pavie), ainsi que de nombreuses mises en défense collectives gérées par le pouvoir royal, comtal et ecclésial, mais également seigneurial au cours du XIIIe siècle. Le pouvoir seigneurial se retrouve également à travers les demeures fortifiées de type salle attestée au milieu du XIIIe siècle dans les sources écrites, et au XIVe siècle d’après les vestiges conservés. Cette dénomination a pu perdurer dans les sources écrites des XVI-XVIIe siècles, même si elle renvoie à une réalité architecturale différente à cette période, le terme salle s’appliquant alors peut-être aux habitats d’une classe sociale particulière (bourgeoisie locale).

En 1994, lors de l’inventaire des ouvrages de terre fortifiés réalisé par Sylvie Faravel, six sites avaient été recensés dans le canton de Samatan et quatorze l’avaient été dans le canton de Lombez. Notre inventaire se compose en grande partie d’ouvrages de terre fortifiés de type motte . Dix sites ou enclos fossoyés et probablement deux maisons fortes ont également été repérés, nombre trop restreint pour en tirer des conclusions quant à leur implantation. Il existait également au moins quatre castelnaux dans notre zone d’étude (Sauveterre, Samatan, Montpézat et Noilhan) ; après prospection, il conviendrait peut-être d’y ajouter Laymont et Saint-Lizier-du-Planté. Les défenses des villes et villages de Simorre, Lombez et Samatan sont bien connues du fait de l’abondance des textes et il nous été possible de suivre l’évolution des certaines d’entre elles, notamment en ce qui concerne Simorre. Mais la motte est sans conteste l’ouvrage de terre fortifié le plus largement rencontrée durant nos prospection, ce qui explique qu’elle a été largement traité dans ce mémoire, au dépend des autres formes de fortification. Au total, trente-six sites ont été répertoriés avec conviction parmi les ouvrages de terre fortifiés et vingt restent hypothétiques par manque de données de terrain ou d’archives.

Plusieurs conclusions ressortent de notre analyse. Tout d’abord, les mottes les plus anciennes qui ont été répertoriées sont installées en plaine, à proximité d’un centre domanial antique. Ces structures seraient à étudier plus en détail. En effet, si nous acceptons l’idée qu’elles n’entrent pas dans la catégorie des mottes, elles peuvent constituer un nouveau jalon dans la typologie des ouvrages de terre fortifiés. Dans le cas contraire, elles pourraient faire remonter la motte à la fin du Xe siècle – idée qui a déjà été émise. En l’absence de toute source écrite pouvant venir confirmer cette hypothèse, il ne nous reste plus qu’une seule alternative : la réalisation d’une typologie céramique fiable pour la Gascogne toulousaine permettant de dater ces tertres.
De nombreuses mottes plus récentes, généralement du XIIe ou XIIIe siècle, sont clairement attestées. De forme circulaire ou rectangulaire aux bords arrondis, elles adoptent le même profil que celles observées par Jean-Michel Lassure à l’ouest de notre zone d’étude. Les observations de ce dernier concordent avec celles réalisées par nos soins et aucune spécificité n’a pu être relevée , si ce n’est l’absence de constructions fortifiées sur les sites répertoriés. Celle-ci s’explique du fait de l’utilisation de matériaux périssables ou du démantèlement systématique de celles réalisées en pierre ou brique.

Les données concernant les mottes attestées au XIe siècle sont bien trop peu nombreuses pour en tirer une quelconque conclusion en ce qui concerne leur implantation, si ce n’est qu’elles sont généralement installées en vallée et qu’elles adoptent une forme circulaire. Nous possédons un peu plus d’informations pour les mottes reconnues au XIIe siècle. Alors qu’une partie reste dans les vallées, une majorité commence à s’implanter sur les hauteurs.
Les constructions souvent modestes surmontant ces ouvrages de terre démontrent que la zone n’a visiblement pas eu besoin de systèmes défensifs réellement performants. A moins qu’elle n’en eut pas les moyens puisque les terres étaient essentiellement allodiales et appartenaient à de petits propriétaires trop peu fortunés pour élever une réelle forteresse. Il faut donc s’imaginer un territoire contrôlé par les autorités comtales où le système allodial était largement répandu, du moins à partir de la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle et plus largement au XIIIe siècle.

Le travail de prospection a été privilégié du fait de l’état d’urgence dû aux destructions des sites de terre qui se multiplient devant la puissance des engins mécaniques actuels. Il convient maintenant de confronter les données de terrain qui ont été amassées dans le cadre de cette maîtrise aux sources provenant des archives qui n’ont pu être consultées, dans le but de mieux appréhender le phénomène d’implantation des ouvrages de terre fortifiés dans le sud-est du Gers.

L'étude des ouvrages de terre fortifiés dans les cantons de Samatan et Lombez, situés au sud-est du département du Gers, résulte d'un travail universitaire réalisé entre 2003 et 2005 sous la direction de Mme Sylvie Faravel, maître de conférence à l'université de Bordeaux III. Les résultats des prospections systématiques réalisées par l'Association Archéo-en-Savès depuis 1992, ainsi que les travaux d'Henri Polge, de Jean-Michel Lassure et de Benoît Cursente ont permis de dresser un premier inventaire. Dans le but d'agrandir cette liste, l'ensemble des plans cadastraux (modernes et contemporains) a été consulté aux Services des Impôts d'Auch. Enfin, le travail de prospection et l'enquête orale sont venus compléter cette démarche.

Le travail de prospection réalisé au cours de l’année 2006 dans les cantons de Mirande et de Montesquiou s’inscrit dans une démarche analogue à celle entamée en 2004 dans les cantons de Samatan et Lombez. Cette étude, accomplie dans le cadre d’un travail universitaire de Master II, a eu pour but de dresser l’inventaire des ouvrages de terre fortifiés de type motte, plate-forme castrale et enclos fossoyé des deux cantons considérés situés dans le Gers méridional. La recherche a débuté par la consultation de la bibliographie existante, des cadastres anciens et modernes, de la carte IGN et des sources médiévales. Une liste de sites susceptibles d’avoir accueilli un ouvrage de terre fortifié a ainsi été dressée. La prospection est alors venue valider ou infirmer l’existence d’un site défensif.
Les sources médiévales, principalement les cartulaires noir et blanc de Sainte-Marie d’Auch, ainsi que celui de Berdoues, ont permis de référencer 34 forteresses entre 1020 et 1329. Les investigations ont permis de révéler l’existence de 24 mottes, 9 plates-formes et 12 enclos fossoyés, soit 45 ouvrages de terre fortifiés. Les vestiges bâtis contemporains de ces fortifications sont inexistants ; des forteresses en place (tours, salles, châteaux gascons) remontant aux XIVe-XVIe siècles ont cependant été observées à proximité immédiate, prouvant vraisemblablement la permanence du centre aristocratique.

A ce stade, l’enquête reste inachevée. Il reste à comprendre quelles ont été les motivations de ces installations. La prospection est venue apporter l’existence d’un grand nombre de sites fortifiés. Alors que les mottes et les plates-formes ont eu une préférence pour les reliefs dominants, les enclos fossoyés se retrouvent en vallée au cœur des terrains cultivés. Le cas du site fossoyé reste problématique : s’agit-il de vestiges défensifs de maisons-fortes, de fermes fortifiées ou de simples jardins modernes liés à une demeure noble ? L’absence de mobilier archéologique nous oblige à laisser cette question en suspend en l’état actuel de nos recherches.

L’objectif de l’année 2007 sera de réaliser une étude analogue dans les cantons de Miélan et de Masseube dans le but d’accomplir un inventaire d’ensemble dont les limites géographiques correspondent à celles du comté d’Astarac au début du XIIIe siècle. L’étude des enclos fossoyés sera également l’un des objectifs de ce travail. Des sondages sont à envisager dans les années à venir afin de répondre aux problématiques posées.

Fortified manors are in the scope of interest from the 19th century and at present, we have solid and complex knowledge base, which can be evaluated to obtain interesting results. Most of the published papers dealing with fortified manors have undergone basic chronological and typological analysis without further interest in their spatial attributes or their relation to the hinterland. This fact and underestimation of quantitative analysis and statistics may be explained in the context of the culture-history paradigm, still prevailing in Czech archaeology. Alternatively, perhaps, it is just a result of the methodological inability of many archaeologists to deal with large data sets. As a response to this situation, the author attempts to look at fortified manors in another way – through statistical methods and using GIS. Paper is aimed to present methodology used in case study of selected region in western part of Central Bohemia as a sample.

Pendant l’hiver 2011 une fouille archeologique realisee en Sologne, pres de Romorantin a permis l’etude d’une occupation carolingienne diffuse, remaniee en un site fossoye medieval circulaire. Aucun emmottement n’a ete identifie, la plateforme centrale est a la meme altitude que les terres exterieures au fosse defensif. Occupee du XIe au XIIIe siecle, les comblements fouilles n’ont revele aucun mobilier marqueur d’un statut social elitaire. Toutefois la morphologie des vestiges indique bien une implantation qui peut correspondre aux toutes premieres strates d’une elite sociale medievale. Lors de changements climatiques entrainant des periodes d’inondations de plus en plus frequentes, le site est abandonne. Une occupation des XIVe-XVe a ete observee en peripherie du village, avec notamment une activite d’extraction d’argile qui devait fonctionner avec des ateliers de fabrication de materiaux de construction en terre cuite signales dans les archives.
