In the 1920s, the Mexican composer Julián Carrillo (1875-1965) developed a microtonal system called El Sonido 13 (The 13th Sound). Although his pioneering role as one of the first proponents of microtonality within the Western art music tradition elevated Carrillo to iconic status among European avant-garde circles in the 1960s and 1970s, his music and legacy have remained largely overlooked by music scholars, critics, and performers.

Confronting this paucity of scholarship on Carrillo and his music, Alejandro L. Madrid goes above and beyond "filling in" the historical record. Combining archival and ethnographic research with musical analysis and cultural theory, Madrid argues that Carrillo and Sonido 13 are best understood as a cultural complex: a network of moments, spaces, and articulations in which Carrillo and his music continuously re-acquire significance and meaning. Thus, Madrid explores Carrillo's music and ideas not only in relation to the historical moments of their inception, but also in relation to the various cultural projects that kept them alive and re-signified them through the beginning of the twenty-first century. Eschewing traditionally linear historical frameworks, In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 employs an innovative transhistorical narrative in which past, present, and future are explored dialogically in order to understand the politics of performance and self-representation behind Carrillo and Sonido 13.

In Search of Julián Carrillo and Sonido 13 transforms the traditional genre of the composer study, treating it not as a celebration of "masters" and "masterworks," but as a pointed postcolonial intervention that offers invaluable insight into the politics of cultural exchange, experimentalism, marginality, and cultural capital in twentieth century Mexico.

Se aborda el estudio y edición crítica de una extensa Salve Regina a cuatro voces conservada en la Catedral de Puebla, que ha sido atribuida a Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), pero que no  coincide con ninguna de las versiones publicadas de este autor. El autor considera que decir esto es posible porque el estudio de la circulación de la obra del compositor abulense, en fuentes manuscritas, ha permitido la identificación de nuevas piezas, nunca publicadas, que se añaden al catálogo de ese autor. Tras analizar distintas evidencias litúrgicas, estilísticas y contextuales, se cuestiona la atribución de esa Salve Regina a Tomás Luis de Victoria, dada por auténtica hasta ahora, y propone una nueva hipótesis que llevaría a considerar a Juan de Victoria, maestro de capilla de la Catedral de Puebla entre 1566 y 1569-1570, el verdadero autor de la obra.

This paper intends to make an analysis of the presence of Santa Muerte within the Mexican music, through the analysis of the songs dedicated to it. For this study of forty songs located from the Spotify playlists was made. Part of this musical production is the soundscape of the violence that the country suffers, which is why we call it necrosonority. Santa Muerte is not only a central motif in many Mexican songs, but also its devotees re-functionalize their musical heritage, from the reinterpretation of well-known songs, which when dedicated to the Santa take an unexpected devotional sense.

Este artículo (una traducción del primer capítulo del libro Danzón: Circum-Caribbean Dialogues in Music and Dance de Alejandro L. Madrid y Robin D. Moore) ofrece una historia del danzón y propone que en vez de que esta música sea abordada como un género, debe ser entendida como parte de un complejo de performance. El artículo también presenta una discusión comparada sobre prácticas interpretativas musicales del danzón en Cuba y México entre las décadas de los 1850s y 1950s.  / This article (a Spanish translation of the first chapter of Danzón: Circum-Caribbean Dialogues in Music and Dance by Alejandro L. Madrid and Robin D. Moore) offers a history of the danzón and proposes that instead of looking at it as a genre it should be understood as a performance complex. The article continues with an extended discussion of the danzón’s performance practice in Cuba and Mexico between the 1850s and about 1950.

El compositor mexicano José Pomar (1880-1961) y su música son relativamente desconocidos. Sin embargo, en el Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas de la UNAM hay un completísimo archivo que contiene gran cantidad de partituras (casi todas inéditas), documentos personales, correspondencia, programas de concierto, escritos del propio Pomar, recortes de periódico, etc., material que permite delinear la biografía del compositor y estudiar aspectos particulares de su producción y su trayectoria musical y política. Esta investigación consistió en una acercamiento a la vida del compositor y a los aspectos biográficos relacionados con su música para piano y un análisis general de algunas de estas obras con el fin de ofrecer una narración histórica que interprete los documentos y el significado de la música en su contexto. Esta tesis, producto del estudio del archivo de Pomar, amplía lo que se sabe del compositor, da a conocer diversos documentos y describe y analiza algunas de sus obras para piano. Finalmente, se propone aquí una edición de su concierto para piano, para contribuir al conocimiento y valoración de este compositor y a la ejecución de sus obras.

Mexican composer José Pomar (1880-1961) and his music are relatively unknown. However, in the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas of the National University there is a very complete archive containing his scores (almost all of them unpublished), personal documents, correspondence, concert programs, Pomar’s own writings, newspaper clippings, etc. This material allows us to delineate the biography of the composer and study particular aspects of his production and his musical and political trajectory. This research consisted of an approach to Pomar’s life and the biographical aspects related to his piano music, as well as a general analysis of some of these works in order to offer a historical narrative that interprets the documents and the meaning of the music in his context. This thesis, which relies upon archival and musicological research, expands what is known about this musician, releases several documents and describes and analyzes some of his works for piano. Finally, an edition of his concert for piano is proposed, to contribute to the knowledge and appreciation of this composer and the interpretation of his works.

José Antonio Gómez y Olguín (1805-1876) es ampliamente referido en la literatura de la música mexicana del siglo XIX como uno de los músicos más notables, autor de tratados (teoría, voz, y piano), un repertorio musical (Instructor Filarmónico) y numerosos manuscritos para coro y orquesta repartidos en varios archivos catedralicios (Basílica de Guadalupe, Catedral Metropolitana, Tulancingo, Guadalajara y San Cristóbal de Las Casas). Empero, poco es lo que se conoce acerca de su vida y obra. Este ensayo examina parte de la participación de Gómez en la construcción de la identidad mexicana mediante tres instancias: dos obras musicales y una referencia histórica: la Pieza Histórica sobre la Independencia de la Nación Mexicana (ca. 1820); las Variaciones sobre el tema del jarabe mexicano (1841) y su participación en 1854, cuando presidiera el comité que seleccionó la música del Himno Nacional.

José Antonio Gómez y Olguín (1805-1876) is widely referred to in the literature on nineteenth-century Mexican music as one of the most noteworthy musicians of his era. His legacy includes various treatises (theory, voice, and piano), his own music repertoire (Instructor Filarmónico) and his numerous compositions, mostly in manuscript form, located throughout several church archives (Basilica of Guadalupe, Mexico City Cathedral, Tulancingo, Guadalajara and San Cristóbal de Las Casas). However, little is known about his life and work or the role Gómez played in the development of music making in Mexico. This essay examines Gómez’s participation in the construction of Mexican identity through three examples, two music compositions and one historical reference: the Pieza Histórica sobre la Independencia de la Nación Mexicana (ca. 1820); the Variaciones sobre el tema del jarabe mexicano (1841); and his involvement in the 1854 National Anthem Committee.

Drawing on recent work on the linguistic production of social markedness, this article explores the cross-border usage of what I term the " Dallas " chronotope: a form of poetics that critically frames the political-economic logics that undergird the markedness structure central to the time–space relational construction of migrant illegality. In a community where back-and-forth movements between Mexico and the United States result in varying degrees of Spanish–English bilingualism, the Spanish expression " da' las " (to give 'em)—short for " dar las nalgas " (to give your buttocks; a reference to getting screwed, comparable to the English colloquial expression " to give it up " in reference to a sexual offering)—is invoked as a phonetic equivalent of " Dallas, " the name of the city in Texas, figuratively equating the social violation of migrants with sexual violation of the body. I extend the analytical frame of markedness through an application of the notion of biopolitics to these instances of linguistically mediated spatiotemporality within a U.S.–Mexico transnational context in order to describe how embodied poetics figuratively construct a resilient sense of migrant personhood that undermines its marked status and literally performs resiliency into being.

Mexico has served as a fertile ground for many forms of culture, from the pre-Hispanic era to the Colony and as an independent and modern country.  This paper explores the style of Mexican composer Ernesto Elorduy (1853-1913) with social and pedagogical perspectives.

El propósito de este texto es abordar la noción de lo popular en el caso del cantautor mexicano Rodrigo González (1950-1985), también conocido como Rockdrigo. Se emplean, principalmente, las recopilaciones de John Storey de teorías sobre la cultura popular (1993 y 2003), así como aproximaciones de Stuart
Hall y Simon Frith al concepto, como marco de referencia para establecer una noción de lo popular que pueda dar cuenta congruentemente de la música de González en tanto producto cultural de la sociedad mexicana en la segunda mitad del siglo veinte.

The presence of 18th-century European and New Spanish instrumental music in the Mexican archives is relatively scant. Some examples still survive in various institutions, and scores that circulated in New Spain are described in a few inventories. Our identification of two violin sonatas, one by Locatelli and the other by Leclair, which are found in Mexico City Cathedral, not only helps to make known the reception and circulation of the work of these European composers in Mexico in the 18th century, but may also show us one of the aspects of musical practice in that institution through the repertoire used there, and shed light on the level of accomplishment reached by the New Spanish violinists of those times. This study allows a revision of the field of the violin in New Spain as well.

Esta contribución presenta tres proyectos discográficos cuyos repertorios ⎯copiados en libros de polifonía o “de facistol”⎯ ejemplifican no sólo los procesos de intercambio musical entre España y el Nuevo Mundo durante los siglos XVI y XVII, sino también los diálogos entre musicología e interpretación. Se trata de tres recientes fonogramas dedicados a las misas del sevillano Alonso Lobo (1555-1617), las misas y motetes del criollo Francisco López Capillas (1614-1674) y la música para ministriles contenida en el Ms 19 de la Catedral de Puebla (México), polifonías todas ellas compartidas por ambos mundos. Se describe de manera detallada el interés y contenido de cada proyecto y las propuestas interpretativas ofrecidas en cada caso, que son divergentes pese a la similitud de los repertorios. El texto incide en la gran variabilidad de prácticas, la imposibilidad de conocer y reconstruir aspectos determinantes en el resultado sonoro final y la necesidad de buscar soluciones de compromiso entre el respeto a ciertas convenciones del pasado, los intereses de los propios grupos (y también de los musicólogos) y los hábitos de escucha de los oyentes actuales. Todo ello sugiere que frente al ya caduco término de autenticidad, que presupone un carácter neutro y atemporal de la interpretación, el concepto de verosimilitud (en el sentido de aquello que tiene apariencia de verdadero o resulta creíble) puede contribuir a desarrollar un marco más flexible desde el que desarrollar propuestas interpretativas en torno a las músicas coloniales en el siglo XXI. // This contribution presents three recording projects whose repertoires—copied in books of polyphony or de facistol—exemplify not only the processes of musical exchange between Spain and the New World during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but also the dialogues between musicology and performance. The three recent recordings are dedicated to the masses of Sevillian Alonso Lobo (1555-1617), the masses and motets of the criollo Francisco López Capillas (1614-1674) and the music for ministriles contained in the Ms 19 of Puebla Cathedral (Mexico), polyphonies all shared by both worlds. The article describes in detail the interest, content and performing proposals offered in each case, which is divergent despite the similarity of repertoires. The text stresses the great variability of practices, the impossibility of knowing and reconstructing key aspects of the resulting sound, and underlines the need to find solutions of compromise between the respect for certain conventions of the past, the interests of the ensembles themselves (and also those of the musicologist), and the listening habits of today’s listeners. All this suggests that, in the face of the already old term of authenticity, which presupposes a neutral and timeless character of performance, the concept of verisimilitude (in the sense of what appears to be true or credible) can contribute to the development of a more flexible framework for developing interpretive proposals in colonial music in the twenty-first century.

In Sounds of Crossing, Alex E. Chávez explores the contemporary politics of Mexican migrant cultural expression manifest in the sounds and poetics of huapango arribeño, a musical genre originating from north-central Mexico. Following the resonance of huapango's improvisational performance within the lives of audiences, musicians, and himself—from New Year's festivities in the highlands of Guanajuato, Mexico, to backyard get-togethers along the back roads of central Texas—Chávez shows how Mexicans living on both sides of the border use expressive culture to construct meaningful communities amid the United States’ often vitriolic immigration politics. Through Chávez's writing, we gain an intimate look at the experience of migration and how huapango carries the voices of those in Mexico, those undertaking the dangerous trek across the border, and those living in the United States. Illuminating how huapango arribeño’s performance refigures the sociopolitical and economic terms of migration through aesthetic means, Chávez adds fresh and compelling ethnographic insights into the ways language, performance, and music-making are at the center of everyday Mexican migrant life.

El trabajo que presentamos a continuación busca reivindicar al cuerpo de los capellanes de coro como un colectivo musical de primera importancia en el ámbito de una catedral, aportando algunas evidencias sobre su régimen y actividad cotidiana en la Catedral de México. Asimismo, y frente a la aparente esterilidad creativa del colectivo, se presentan dos casos de estudio de capellanes-compositores, Manuel Acevedo (1719-1784/92) y Vicente Gómez (1754/55-1830), de los que se informa sobre sus perfiles profesionales y se analizan y editan en transcripción moderna dos Gloria-Credo en canto mixto (o figurado), de creación propia, localizados en un cantoral de la Catedral Metropolitana. Ello permite avanzar sobre otro asunto de gran interés que amerita una mayor investigación: la ampliación del repertorio de canto llano por medio de la composición de nuevas piezas, superando así la visión tradicional del gregoriano como repertorio inmutable, cerrado y conservador.

Este artículo plantea una revisión de la historiografía musical nacionalista mexicana tomando como punto de partida un análisis comparativo de dos libros publicados en Ciudad de México a principios de la década de 1930, Instrumental precortesiano (1933) de Daniel Castañeda y Vicente T. Mendoza y Hacia una nueva música/Toward a New Music (1932-1937) de Carlos Chávez. En el contexto de la reconceptualización de la noción de archivo musical o archivo sonoro a partir de la escucha y la imaginación de la escucha, este artículo explora la posibilidad de acercarse a esos dos libros de manera relacional como archivos de aspiraciones y deseos. Esta constelación archivística nos ofrece un punto de entrada para comprender la relación performativa entre modernidad y tradición que informa el desarrollo de la narrativa nacionalista mexicana posrevolucionaria. El artículo sugiere que la invención del pasado en contrapunto con la imaginación del futuro que la escritura de estos libros pone en evidencia es una clave fundamental para entender el esencialismo de las aspiraciones que ha informado la historiografía musical mexicana de los últimos noventa años.
