Medieval Herbals

Henry, archdeacon of Huntingdon, England (ca 1088–ca 1154) has been admired for centuries as the author of the monumental Historia Anglorum. The recent discovery of the Anglicanus ortus opens a new window onto this important English author as well as onto the uses of poetry and the knowledge of medicine in medieval England. Written in Latin verse, the Anglicanus ortus describes the medicinal uses of 160 different herbs, spices and vegetables. Henry drew on centuries of learned medicine to compose this work, employing the medical knowledge of ancient authors like Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides and of medieval scholars like Walahfrid Strabo, Macer Floridus and Constantine the African. But this is no ordinary herbal: the work is staged first as a discussion between a master and a student walking around a garden, inspecting the plants in their separate beds, and then as an awkward performance by the same master before Apollo and a critical audience, seated in a theatre at the garden’s centre. Beyond its didactic and performative aspects, the entire work is framed as a prayer to God’s generative capacity and the rational order of nature. The search for that order is virtuous: as Henry himself says, ‘Happy is he who can know the causes of things, especially whatever will be the cause of health.’ This critical edition is based on the five extant manuscripts and includes a complete English translation on facing pages and a commentary on every poem. An extensive introduction traces the history and relation of the manuscripts, examines Henry’s poetic skill and use of sources, and establishes the place of the Anglicanus ortus in a pivotal era in the history of medicine and natural philosophy.

Après l’évocation de quelques représentations d’époque romane directement inspirées d’œuvres antiques, il sera question des principaux médias – littéraires et artistiques – qui permirent à la figure du centaure de s’intégrer à l’imaginaire chrétien et de susciter des représentations à la fois originales et ancrées dans le passé. On notera à cet égard l’importance de l’illustration des traités d’astronomie et des Herbarii d’époque carolingienne comme images-relais. On verra aussi que, dissociées de leur contexte, les antiques images ont souvent poursuivi une carrière autonome. Il en est résulté des confusions d’attributs aberrantes en termes mythologiques, mais souvent décoratives. L’étude comprend en outre quatre études de cas : le centaure au lièvre ; le Sagittaire zodiacal comme centaure et hippopode ; Chiron médecin et les centaures au rameau, et le centaure au serpent.

Abstract

After first remarking on some representations from the Romanesque period directly inspired by antique works, we will treat the principal media – literary and artistic – which have allowed the figure of the centaur to integrate itself into the Christian imagination and to give rise to some representations at once novel and yet firmly anchored in the past. We will note in this regard the importance of the illustration of Carolingian astronomical treatises and herbals as fecundating images for medieval centaur iconography. We will also see that divorced from their cultural contexts these antique images have often taken on lives of their own. This often results in a certain confusion of attributes, aberrant in terms of « classical » mythology, but often quite decorative. The study comprises four specific examples of the centaur type : the centaur bearing a hare, the zodiacal Sagittarius as a centaur and hippopode, Chiron the physician and the centaurs with antlers, and finally the centaur bearing a serpent.

The Voynich Manuscript is a 15th Century illustrated cipher manuscript. In this overview of recent approaches to the Voynich manuscript, we summarize and evaluate current work on the language that underlies this document. We provide arguments for treating the document as natural language (rather than a medieval hoax) and show how we can make statistical arguments about the phonology, morphology, and structure of the document, even though the contents remain undecipherable.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an inflammatory disorder of
the gastrointestinal tract with no cure at present. The allopathic
drugs available for its treatment are associated with serious side
effects which may worsen the patient’s condition. From times
immemorial man has been using plants not only as food but also
for treatment of diseases. At present research is being conducted to
find evidence regarding rationale for use of plants in the treatment
of various diseases. In purview of these facts the review is aimed
to securitize plants used for the treatment of IBD.

Magnifiquement enluminé au XVe siècle, le ms. Latin 9333 de la BnF contient les traductions latine et allemande d’un manuel de santé arabe, le Kitâb Taqwim assihha, composé au XIe siècle par un médecin de Bagdad, Ibn Butlân. Conformément à la théorie des humeurs d’Hippocrate, les aliments, les activités et l’ensemble des phénomènes environnementaux y sont classés selon leur nature et leurs effets sur différentes catégories de patients.
Ces prescriptions sont abondamment illustrées de superbes scènes très détaillées représentant les cultures, les récoltes, la préparation des denrées ou la confection des vêtements, offrant une véritable incursion dans la vie quotidienne de la fin du Moyen Âge. Ayant appartenu à un bibliophile averti, le comte puis duc de Wurtemberg Eberhard im Bart (1445- 1496), ce volume conserve une part de mystère du fait de sa datation particulièrement délicate, fondée notamment sur des armoiries controversées.

„Naturwissenschaft und Illustration im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert“

Abstract Thema

Mit dem Umbruch vom Manuskript zum gedruckten Buch werden nicht nur das Buch und die Schrift, sondern wird auch das Bild großen Veränderungen unterzogen; dies sind bekannte Prämissen. Wenig Aufmerksamkeit ist hingegen den naturwissenschaftlichen Illustrationen dieser Zeit aus kunstwissenschaftlicher Perspektive gewidmet worden. Einer der Gründe dafür ist vielleicht, dass das Konzept der „naturwissenschaftlichen Illustration“ erst im 15. Jahrhundert eine entscheidende Entwicklung erfährt und noch gar nicht als solche rezipiert worden ist. Die einzelnen Disziplinen der Botanik, Zoologie, Medizin, Kartographie usw. haben sich vor allem unter fachspezifischen Gesichtspunkten mit den Traktaten dieser Periode auseinandergesetzt. In einer interdisziplinären Begegnung und Diskussion soll der Fokus in erster Linie auf die Illustrationen dieser wissenschaftlichen Werke gelegt werden.

Die Naturphilosophie nimmt seit dem Spätmittelalter die Naturbeobachtung zusätzlich als eines ihrer Prinzipien auf. Die Beschreibung des physischen Äußeren gesellt sich zur älteren, traditionellen Auflistung anderer Aspekte, wie z.B. in Werken wie De rerum proprietatibus des Bartholomeus Anglicus oder De plantis und De animalibus des Albertus Magnus. Diese textuellen Erweiterungen sind eine mögliche Erklärung für das Einfügen von Visualisierungen in Enzyklopädien und naturwissenschaftliche Schriften des Spätmittelalters. Die Produktion von Illustrationen für naturwissenschaftliche Abhandlungen steigt jedenfalls seit dem 15. Jahrhundert rasant an, unter anderem gefördert durch das wachsende Buchwesen sowie die Einführung des Buchdrucks und des Drucks von Bildern.

Trotz der angedeuteten Wandlungen, die plausible Erklärungen bieten können, sind für den Bereich der Visualisierung naturwissenschaftlicher Informationen noch viele Themengebiete unerforscht. So sind die Käufer- und Leserkreise insbesondere der frühen Bücher wenig bekannt. Das Einfügen der Illustrationen selbst wirft Fragen auf: zum einen weil sich die Traktattexte vor dem 15. Jahrhundert kaum von den späteren unterschieden, aber ohne Bildmaterial auskamen; zum anderen weil ein und dieselbe Abbildung oft für unterschiedliche Objekte verwendet wurde. Die Illustrationen scheinen daher auch textunabhängig einen eigenen Entstehungsdynamismus gebildet zu haben. Die angewandten Strategien zur optischen Veranschaulichung des Wissens – vor allem im Übergang von der Handschrift zur Druckpublikation – können bezüglich der Entwicklung des Layouts, der Erarbeitung einer spezifisch „wissenschaftlichen“ Formensprache, des Verzichts auf Farbe, der Assimilation der Drucktechniken (besonders des Holzdrucks) vertiefenden Analysen unterzogen werden.

Im Zentrum der Tagung soll die Untersuchung von Prozessen stehen, die sich mit den Illustrationen wissenschaftlicher Werke des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts verbinden lassen. Dabei sollen bewusst Vorgänge unterschiedlicher Wissenschaftszweige thematisiert werden, weil eine gegenseitige Beeinflussung in der anvisierten Periode anzunehmen ist. Über visuelle Disziplinen wie die Kunstwissenschaft hinausgehend richtet sich die Tagung besonders auch an Forscher der Botanik, Zoologie, Naturkunde, Medizin, Kartographie und Astronomie.
