Amaç: Bu çalişma, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tip Fakültesi 1. sinif ve 4. sinif öğrencilerinin küresel isinma ve sağliğa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi, tutum ve davranişlarinin değerlendirilmesi amaciyla yapilmiştir.

Gereç veYöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu araştirma, Nisan 2016'da Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tip Fakültesi 1. ve 4. sinif öğrencileri arasinda yapilmiştir. Çalişmaya 1. siniftan 268 (%79,7) ve 4. siniftan 87 (%82,8) öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 355 kişi (%80,5) katilmiştir. Katilimcilara sosyodemografik özellikleri ile ilgili 6 soru, küresel isinmayla ilgili bilgi, tutum ve davranişlarinin sorgulandiği 20 soru ve küresel isinmanin sağliğa etkileriyle ilgili bilgi durumunun sorgulandiği 26 soru olmak üzere toplam 52 sorudan oluşan anket formu uygulanmiştir.

Bulgular: Çalişmaya katilan öğrencilerin yaş ortalamasi 20,29 ± 1,76 olup, %56,9'u kadindir. Öğrencilerin %21,3'ü sera gazlarini bilmediğini belirtmiş, %10,5'i nükleer enerjinin temiz enerji kaynaği olduğunu düşünmektedir. Öğrencilerin %4,4'ü küresel isinmanin önlenemez olduğunu düşünmekte ve %28,6'si küresel isinmaya karşi bireysel önlem almadiğini belirtmiştir. Öğrencilerin küresel isinmanin sağliğa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi puan ortalamasi 20,9±4,6'dir. Öğrenciler küresel isinmanin sağlik üzerine etkisiyle ilgili en az olarak, küresel isinmanin sarihumma, sitma ve ishalli hastaliklarda artişa yol açabileceğini bilmişlerdir (bilme durumlari sirasiyla %47,2; %58,3; %61,7).

Sonuç:Öğrencilerin küresel isinma ile ilgili genel bilgi durumlari iyidir fakat küresel isinma ile ilgili bazi konularda eksiklikler ve yanliş bilgilenme mevcuttur. Öğrencilerin küresel isinmanin sağliğa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi puani yüksektir. Ancak küresel isinmanin neden olduğu bazi hastaliklar öğrenciler tarafindan yeterli düzeyde bilinmemektedir. Tip fakültesindeki çevre sağliği derslerinde küresel isinma ve sağliğa etkileriyle ilgili konularin içeriklerinin arttirilmasi ve güncellenmesi önerilebilir. Pam Tıp Derg 2017;(2):172-180

Goal: To provide healthcare professionals with comprehensive multidisciplinary expert recommenda-
tions for the acute care of severe limb trauma patients, both during the prehospital phase and after admission to a Trauma Centre.
Design: A consensus committee of 21 experts was formed. A formal conflict-of-interest (COI) policy was
developed at the onset of the process and enforced throughout. The entire guidelines process was
conducted independently of any industrial funding (i.e., pharmaceutical, medical devices). The authors
were advised to follow the rules of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and
Evaluation (GRADE1) system to guide assessment of the quality of evidence. The potential drawbacks of making strong recommendations in the presence of low-quality evidence were emphasised. Few recommendations remained non-graded.
Methods: The committee addressed eleven questions relevant to the patient suffering severe limb trauma: 1) What are the key findings derived from medical history and clinical examination which lead to the patient’s prompt referral to a Level 1 or Level 2 Trauma Centre? 2) What are the medical devices that must be implemented in the prehospital setting to reduce blood loss? 3) Which are the clinical findings prompting the performance of injected X-ray examinations? 4) What are the ideal timing and modalities for performing fracture fixation? 5) What are the clinical and operative findings which steer
the surgical approach in case of vascular compromise and/or major musculoskeletal attrition? 6) How to
best prevent infection? 7) How to best prevent thromboembolic complications? 8) What is the best
strategy to precociously detect and treat limb compartment syndrome? 9) How to best and precociously
detect post-traumatic rhabdomyolysis and prevent rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury? 10)
What is the best strategy to reduce the incidence of fat emboli syndrome and post-traumatic systemic
inflammatory response? 11) What is the best therapeutic strategy to treat acute trauma-induced pain?
Every question was formulated in a PICO (Patient Intervention Comparison Outcome) format and the
evidence profiles were produced. The literature review and recommendations were made according to the GRADE1 methodology.
Results: The experts’ synthesis work and the application of the GRADE method resulted in 19 recommendations. Among the formalised recommendations, 4 had a high level of evidence (GRADE 1+/) and 12 had a low level of evidence (GRADE 2+/). For 3 recommendations, the GRADE method could not be applied, resulting in an expert advice. After two rounds of scoring and one amendment,
strong agreement was reached on all the recommendations.
Conclusions: There was significant agreement among experts on strong recommendations to improve
practices for severe limb trauma patients.

With an emphasis on practising evidence-based medicine, medical schools encourage students’ participation in research as well as providing opportunities to present their findings at conferences. Recognition of such work is a credit to the individual, adding to the list of achievements in their portfolio. In the UK, as part of the standards laid out by the General Medical Council in Tomorrow’s Doctors, it is expected that doctors should function as clinicians and scientists by being able to critically appraise medical literature to provide the best possible patient care. This can encourage students to become involved in projects to gain experience in these skills and also to publish this work in academic journals.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess COVID-19 related risk perception, preventive behaviors among Turkish medical students within the two weeks after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 646 medical students (1st-6th year) in Pamukkale University with an online questionnaire. Forms were collected between 23rd to 31st of March 2020 via Google form. The questionnaire consisted of 39 questions including 12 items about sociodemographic information, 6 questions regarding COVID-19, 11 items about risk perception and 10 items regarding preventive measures about COVID-19.

Results: The mean age of students was 21.77±2.28 years and 413 (63.8%) of them were female. The mean risk perception score of students was 22.70±4.68 (out of 44) and the mean preventive behavior score of students was 32.20±4.70 (out of 40). There was a significantly positive correlation between risk perception and preventive behavior scores. Female students, students with lower income, students whose mothers were highly educated, students who evaluated their health status as poor and who evaluated their knowledge about COVID-19 as insufficient had higher risk perception. Adoption of protective measures were higher in female students, married students, students who have chronic diseases and students who evaluated their health status as poor.

Conclusion: Medical students in Turkey had a moderate risk perception and high preventive behaviors about COVID-19. In order to enhance students’ risk perception, educators should be more involved in the process of medical education regarding the pandemic.

Giriş ve Amaç: Küresel ısınma sonucu değişen çevresel faktörler, ilerleyen dönemde hastalıkların morbidite ve mortalitesinde değişikliklere sebep olabilecektir. Küresel ısınma ve sağlığa etkilerinin gelecekte sağlık hizmet sunumunda görev alacak hekim adaylarınca bilinmesi, oluşacak sağlık sorunlarına karşı toplumun korunabilmesi açısından büyük önem taşımaktadır. Küresel ısınma ile ilgili dersler tıp fakültesi ilk üç sınıfta yer alan çevre sağlığı derslerinde verilmektedir. Bu çalışma, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 1. sınıf ve 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin küresel ısınma ve sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu araştırmanın evrenini, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde eğitim gören 336’sı dönem 1 ve 105’i dönem 4 olmak üzere toplam 441 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada örneklem seçilmemiş olup tüm evren üzerinde çalışılması planlanmıştır. Araştırmanın bağımlı değişkeni küresel ısınma ve sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi düzeyi, tutum ve davranışlardır. Araştırmanın bağımsız değişkenlerini yaş, cinsiyet, anne-baba eğitim durumu, sınıf ve en uzun süre yaşanılan yer oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama işlemi katılımcıların sözlü onamları alındıktan sonra 11-15 Nisan 2016 tarihlerinde yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın yapıldığı tarihlerde devamsız/izinli olan veya çalışmaya katılmak istemeyen öğrenciler çalışma dışında tutulmuştur. Çalışmaya, dönem 1’den 268 (%79,8) ve dönem 4’ten 87 (%82,9) öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 355 kişi (%80,5) katılmıştır. Katılımcılara sosyodemografik özellikleri ile ilgili 6 soru, küresel ısınmayı duyma ve eğitim alma durumunun sorgulandığı 5 soru, küresel ısınma ile ilgili genel bilgi durumunun sorgulandığı 8 soru, küresel ısınma ile ilgili tutum ve davranışlarının sorgulandığı 7 soru ve küresel ısınmanın sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi durumunun sorgulandığı 26 soru olmak üzere toplam 52 sorudan oluşan anket formu uygulanmıştır. Küresel ısınmanın sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili 26 önermenin bulunduğu son bölümden katılımcılara her doğru yanıtları için “1 puan” ve yanlış ve fikrim yok yanıtları için “0 puan” verilerek bilgi puanı hesaplanmıştır ve buna göre her öğrenci en az 0 ve en fazla 26 puan alabilmektedir. Çalışma öncesinde gerekli kurumsal izinler ve etik kurul izni alınmıştır. Verilerin karşılaştırılmasında SPSS kullanılmış olup tanımlayıcı istatistikler, ki-kare ve Mann Whitney-U testleri yapılmıştır.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 20,29 ± 1,76 olup, %56,9’u kadındır. Öğrencilerin %57,7’inin annesinin eğitim durumu lise ve üzeri, %56,1’inin babasının eğitim durumu üniversite ve üzeridir. Öğrencilerin %66,4’ü en uzun yerleşim yeri olarak il merkezi, %28,8’i ilçe merkezi, %4,8’i köy olarak belirtmiştir. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %88,5’i küresel ısınma nedeni olarak sanayileşme, %86,2’si fosil yakıt kullanımının artması ve %85,1’i de sera gazı salınımının artması olarak belirtmiştir. Öğrencilerin %20,5’i sera gazlarını bilmediğini belirtmiş, %10,2'si nükleer enerjinin temiz enerji kaynağı olduğunu düşünmektedir. Öğrencilerin %66,5’i uluslararası çevre sözleşmelerinin (IPCC, UNPCC, Kyoto) hiçbirini duymamıştır. Öğrencilerin %4,2’si küresel ısınmanın önlenemez olduğunu düşünmekte ve %27,6’sı küresel ısınmaya karşı bireysel önlem almadığını belirtmiştir. Öğrencilerin küresel ısınmanın sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi puan ortalaması 20,9±4,6’dır. Bağımsız değişkenlere göre bilgi puanları karşılaştırıldığında kız öğrencilerin, dönem-4 öğrencilerinin, ilçe/köyde yaşayanların, anne eğitim durumu lise ve üzerinde olanların, baba eğitim durumu üniversite ve üzerinde olanların bilgi puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuş, ancak istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmamıştır (p>0.05). Soru bazında değerlendirildiğinde; öğrenciler küresel ısınmanın sağlık üzerine etkisiyle ilgili olarak en az, küresel ısınmanın sarıhumma, sıtma ve ishalli hastalıklarda artışa yol açabileceğini bilmişlerdir (bilme durumları sırasıyla %46,0; %56,6; %60,0). Ayrıca öğrencilerin % 64,6’sı küresel ısınma ve sağlığa etkileri konusunun ayrı bir ders konusu olarak tıp eğitimi ders programına eklenmesinin faydalı olacağını düşünmektedir.

Sonuç ve Öneriler: Öğrencilerin küresel ısınma ile ilgili genel bilgi durumları iyi olmakla birlikte; sera gazları ile temiz enerji kaynaklarını bilme durumlarında ve küresel ışımaya karşı bireysel önlem alma ile küresel ısınmanın önlenebilirliği hakkında az da olsa eksik veya yanlış bilgilenme mevcuttur. Ayrıca öğrencilerin yarısından fazlası uluslararası çevre sözleşmelerini duymamıştır. Buna karşın öğrencilerin büyük çoğunluğu küresel ısınmanın önlenebilir olduğunu belirtip bireysel önlemlerini almaktadır. Öğrencilerin küresel ısınmanın sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili bilgi puanı ise yüksektir. Ancak küresel ısınmanın neden olduğu bazı hastalıklar öğrenciler tarafından yeterli düzeyde bilinmemektedir. Tıp fakültesindeki çevre sağlığı derslerinde küresel ısınma ve sağlığa etkileri ile ilgili konuların içeriklerinin arttırılması ve günümüz koşullarına göre güncellenmesi önerilebilir.

Giriş ve Amaç: İnternetin ortaya çıkışı dünyada her türlü bilgiye sınırsız bir erişim sağlamış, bilgi paylaşımını kolaylaştırmış ve araştırmacıların olanaklarını arttırmıştır. Ancak internetin çok hızla yaygınlaşması beraberinde bazı olumsuz sonuçları da getirmiştir. Bu olumsuz sonuçlardan birisi aşırı internet kullanımıdır. Dünya üzerinde milyonlarca internet kullanan kişiden bazıları “internet bağımlısı” olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu’nun 2012 Yılı Hanehalkı Bilişim Teknolojileri Kullanımı Araştırması sonuçlarına göre bilgisayar ve internet kullanım oranının en yüksek olduğu yaş grubu 16-24’tür. Eğitim durumuna göre en fazla internet kullanım oranı % 93,0 ile yüksekokul, fakülte ve daha üstü bireylerdedir. Bu bilgi benzer yaş gruplarında olan tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin de aynı problemle karşılaşma risklerinin olduğunu düşündürmüştür.Bu çalışma Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi (PAÜTF) öğrencilerinde internet bağımlılığı sıklığını ve internet bağımlılığını etkileyen faktörleri saptamak amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu araştırmanın evrenini …. Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde okuyan tüm öğrenciler oluşturmuştur. Örneklem seçimine gidilmeden evren üzerinde çalışılmış, araştırmaya toplam 386 (%71,5) öğrenci katılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Kasım 2011’de toplanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilere internet bağımlılığı sıklığı ve etkileyen faktörleri ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bir anket formu doldurtulmuştur. Veri toplama aracında araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan, 20 sorudan oluşan demografik verileri sorgulayan sorular, 4 sorudan oluşan sosyoekonomik düzeyi ölçen sorular ve 20 sorudan oluşan Young tarafından geliştirilen “İnternet Bağımlılığı Testi” ile ilgili sorular vardır. Ankette çalışmaya katılanların sosyoekonomik seviyeleri “Aile Refah Ölçeği” (ARÖ) ile saptanmıştır. Young tarafından geliştirilen İnternet Bağımlılığı Testi Bayraktar tarafından 2001 yılında Türkçe’ye uyarlanmış olup altılı likert tarzındadır. Katılımcılardan "hiçbir zaman", "nadiren", " arada sırada", "çoğunlukla", "çok sık" ve "devamlı" seçeneklerinden birini işaretlemesi istenmektedir. Bu seçeneklere sırasıyla 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 ve 5 puan verilmektedir. İnternet bağımlılığı anket soruları 3 puan kategorisine ayrılmış; 20-49 puan arası normal internet kullanımı, 50-79 puan arası riskli internet kullanımı ve 80-100 puan arası ise bağımlı internet kullanımı olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmamızda internet bağımlılığı anket soruları; 50 puan altı normal kullanıcı, 50-100 puan arası riskli-bağımlı grup olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırmamızda elde edilen verilerin istatistiksel analizinde SPSS paket programı kullanılmıştır. Veriler değerlendirilirken tanımlayıcı istatistikler yapılmıştır ve ilişkiler ki-kare analizi ile incelenmiştir.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılanların 211(%54,7)’i kadındır. Bağımlılık endeksi puan ortalaması 22,9±15,6’dır. Katılımcılar internet kullanımı açısından 363(%94,0)’ü normal kullanıcı, 20(%5,2)’si riskli kullanıcı ve 3(%0,8)’ü bağımlı kullanıcı olarak saptanmıştır. Haftalık internet kullanım ortalaması 11,5±11,7 saattir (sınırları 0 ile 130 saat arasında). İnternette geçirilen zaman açısından bakıldığında haftada 1 saatten az zaman geçirenler %44,3(n=171); 1-2 saat arası zaman geçirenler %28,2(n=110); 2 saatten fazla zaman geçirenler ise %27,5(n=105) olarak bulunmuştur. İnternet bağımlılığı erkeklerde %7,4 iken kadınlarda %4,7 bulunmuştur (p=0,371). Ancak erkeklerin %33,7’si haftada 2 saatten fazla internette zaman geçirirken, kadınlarda bu oran %21,9’dur (p=0,017). Yaş, sınıf, sosyoekonomik faktörler ve sigara kullanımı riskli-bağımlı durumunu etkilememektedir.

Sonuç ve Öneriler: Tıp fakültesi öğrencileri arasında riskli ve bağımlı internet kullanım oranı düşüktür. . Hem bağımlılık oranları, hem internetin kullanım amaçları, hem de ilgili sosyodemografik değişkenler hakkında bilgiler elde edilerek ilgili literatüre katkı sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır. Aynı konuda benzer çalışmaların yapılması ve bu çalışmanın bulgularının planlamada kullanılması uygun olur.

Giriş-Amaç: Beyin göçü, bilim insanı, hekim, mühendis gibi vasıflı insan gücünün araştırma yapmak veya çalışmak amacıyla başka bir ülkeye göç etmesidir. Tıbbi beyin göçü ise eğitimli ve yetenekli sağlık profesyonellerinin (doktorlar, hemşireler ve ebeler vb.) düşük gelirli ülkelerden yüksek gelirli ülkelere göçünü ifade eder. Son yıllarda doktorların, gelişmekte olan ülkelerden gelişmiş ülkelere göç etmesini içeren "beyin göçü" sağlık hizmetleri için önemli ölçüde acil bir sorun olmuştur ve olası bir tehdit veya kriz olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü, 2030 yılına kadar, çoğunlukla düşük ve düşük-orta gelirli ülkelerde 18 milyon sağlık çalışanı açığı olacağını tahmin etmektedir. Türkiye'de son yıllarda tıbbi beyin göçünün arttığına dair veriler vardır ancak bu konudaki çalışmalar oldukça sınırlıdır. Türk Tabipleri Birliği'nin raporuna göre 2019 yılında 1047 hekimin yurtdışına göç ettiği ve 2021 yılının ilk dokuz ayında iyi hal belgesi alan hekim sayısının 967 olduğu belirtilmiştir. Artan beyin göçü göz önüne alındığında hekim adaylarının beyin göçüne yönelik tutumlarının belirlenmesi, bu konuda alınacak önlemler açısından yol gösterici olması nedeniyle önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışma ile Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinin beyin göçüne yönelik tutumları ve ilişkili etmenlerin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır.

Gereç-Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu araştırmanın evrenini 2021-2022 eğitim öğretim dönemindeki Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi'nde öğrenim gören öğrenciler (N=1397) oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmada örneklem seçilmemiş olup evrenin tamamına ulaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Çalışmaya 1129 kişi katılmıştır (katılım oranı %80,8). Araştırma verileri 24 Eylül-7 Ekim 2021 tarihleri arasında toplanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilere, literatür taranarak oluşturulan 37 soruluk anket formu uygulanmıştır. Veriler Google formlar aracılığıyla online olarak toplanmıştır. Sınıf temsilcileri aracılığı ile anket linki her sınıfın öğrenci Whatsapp gruplarında günün farklı zamanlarında en az 3 kez paylaşılmıştır. Anket formunda sosyodemografik özelliklerle ilgili 8 soru, öğrencilerin yurtdışıyla ilgili görüşleri ve özellikleriyle ilgili 13 soru sorulmuştur. Araştırmanın bağımlı değişkeni olan beyin göçüne yönelik tutum ise 16 sorudan oluşan Beyin Göçüne Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği (BGYTÖ) kullanılarak ölçülmüştür. BGYTÖ Öncü ve ark. tarafından 2018 yılında geliştirilmiştir. Ölçekteki sorular 5'li likert (1= kesinlikle katılmıyorum...5 =tamamen katılıyorum) dereceleme tipinde olup; ölçekten en az 16 en fazla 80 puan alınabilmektedir. Ölçekten alınan puanın artması göç etme eğiliminin arttığını göstermektedir. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde R istatistik programının 3.4.3 versiyonu kullanılmıştır. Tanımlayıcı istatistikler kategorik değişkenler için sayı, yüzde; sürekli değişkenler için aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, ortanca, minimum ve maksimum değerler ile verilmiştir. Verilerin normal dağılıma uygunluğu Kolmogorov-Smirnov analiz yöntemi ile test edilmiş olup, beyin göçüne yönelik tutum puanıyla ilişkili etmenlerin belirlenmesinde çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi kullanılmıştır. p<0,05 anlamlı kabul edilmiştir. Çalışma öncesinde Pamukkale Üniversitesi Girişimsel Olmayan Klinik Araştırmalar Etik Kurulu'ndan ve ölçek sahibinden gerekli izinler alınmıştır.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 21,13±2,14 olup %54,5'i (n=615) kadındır. Öğrencilerin %52,9'u mezuniyet sonrasında yurtdışına gitmeyi düşündüğünü, %30,5'i kararsız olduğunu, %16,6'sı ise gitmeyi düşünmediğini belirtmiştir. Öğrencilerin yurtdışına gitme nedenleri olarak belirtilen ilk 3 neden %73,7 ile yurtdışındaki daha iyi çalışma koşulları, %66,8 ile yurtdışındaki daha iyi sosyal yaşam koşulları, %65,1 ile yurt içindeki iş yükü fazlalığı ve görev tanımı belirsizliğidir. Öğrencilerin beyin göçüne yönelik tutum puan ortalaması 61,26±11,82'dir. Çoklu regresyon analizi sonucunda ailesinin gelir durumu yetersiz olanların, evde tek başına veya arkadaşlarıyla yaşayanların, tıp fakültesine isteyerek gelmeyenlerin, daha önce beyin göçü yapmış arkadaşı veya akrabası olanların, yabancı dil düzeyi daha iyi olanların ve yurt dışı öğrenci değişim programlarına katılmak isteyenlerin beyin göçüne yönelik tutum puanlarının daha yüksek olduğu ve tutum ile ilişkili etmenler olduğu bulunmuştur (p<0,05). Sonuç: Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi’nde öğrenim gören her iki öğrenciden biri mezuniyet sonrasında beyin göçü yapmayı düşünmektedir ve en çok gitme nedenleri daha iyi çalışma ve yaşam koşullarıdır. Yurtdışına hekim göçünü önlemek için Türkiye’de hekimlerin göç etme eğilimlerinin tıp fakültesinden başlayarak erken dönemde saptanması ve göç etme nedenlerinin saptanarak bunlara yönelik iyileştirici politikalar geliştirilmesi gerekmektedir.

Background: Physicians and medical students are at risk of exposure to a broad range of viral pathogens through percutaneous injury, contact of mucous membrane with blood, and other potentially infectious body fluids. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of physicians and medical students of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences, Iran, regarding standard precautions.

Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional research based on a survey performed in 3 teaching hospitals affiliated with Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire. Subsequently, researchers distributed the questionnaires among the individuals who agreed to participate in the study. The participants were given instructions on completing the questionnaires. After completion of the questionnaires, they were collected and statistically processed with SPSS software using frequencies, percentages, the averages and standard deviations, and the independent t-test. All P values equal to or less than 0.05 were considered as statistically significant.

Results: The response rate in this study was 95%. The mean age of subjects was 27.6 ± 5.3 years. The majority of subjects were female (62.1%), single (66.3%), and medical interns (78.9%). Most subjects were untrained on standard precautions (64.5%). The mean and standard deviations of KAP scores were 37.6 ± 7.4 (out of 46), 32.6 ± 4.5 (out of 45), and 33.06 ± 6.5 (out of 44), respectively. The independent t-test showed significant differences between knowledge and practice scores and marital status. It also showed significant differences between the practice score and training on standard precautions (P < 0.05).

  Conclusions: The results showed that the knowledge score was desirable, but the attitude and practice scores were not desirable. Thus, educational programs with the foundation of blood-borne infections, infection control, safety recommendations, and different aspects of standard precautions are recommended.

Traditionally few students have had the opportunity to contribute to high-quality clinical research. Over the last five years, collaborative networks have empowered students and trainees to participate in high-impact multicentre studies that have potential to change clinical practice and improve patient care. The UK Foundation Programme Application System (FPAS) should recognise the significant contributions of students participating in collaborative studies when ranking final year medical students applying for the Foundation Programme, encouraging a culture of positive engagement with audit and research.

Postgraduate research collaboratives are regional and national networks of trainees who work together to run prospective multicentre research which identify and address areas of practice where there is a need for research for patient benefit [1]. For example, the National Sepsis Audit investigated the care of emergency general surgery patients, finding that whilst sepsis is a common presentation, adherence to severe sepsis guidelines is incomplete in the majority of patients [2]. Similarly, the National Appendicectomy Audit found wide variation in the care and outcomes of patients undergoing appendicectomy, challenging surgeons to evaluate their outcomes more closely [3]. Trainee collaboratives have also run randomised controlled trials, such as Reinforcement of Closure of Stoma Site, a trial testing a novel surgical intervention; prophylactic biological mesh to prevent incisional hernia following stoma closure [4].

Inspired by the well-established postgraduate trainee research collaborative model, Student Audit and Research in Surgery (STARSurg; www.starsurg.org) is a student-driven, national research network across the UK and Ireland. Founded in 2013, it aims to engage students in multicentre research studies early in their career, embedding clinical research as a fundamental part of their future evidence-based medical practice.

Giriş ve Amaç: Ekonomik ve çevre şartlarının düzeltilmesi ve eğitim düzeyinin artması ile hepatit A enfeksiyonuna duyarlılık ileri yaşlara kaymaktadır. Fakat hastalığın ciddiyeti de yaşla birlikte artmaktadır. Tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin tıp eğitimleri süresince hepatit A enfeksiyonu olan hastalarla karşılaşma olasılıkları olduğu gibi, hepatit A enfeksiyonu olan öğrencilerin de hastalarla teması olmaktadır. Bu nedenle hepatit A geçirmemiş veya aşılaması olmayan tıp fakültesi öğrencileri hepatit A enfeksiyonu açısından risk altındadır . Bu çalışma Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin hepatit A seroprevalansını ve etkileyen faktörleri incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu çalışmanın evrenini, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 2012-2013 öğretim yılı içerisindeki 6. sınıf öğrencileri oluşturmuştur. Örneklem seçimine gidilmeden evren üzerinde çalışılmış, ancak anket formlarının uygulandığı günlerde devamsız olan ya da anket formunu doldurmak istemeyen 4 (%8,3) öğrencinin çalışma dışında tutulması nedeniyle 44 (%91,6) öğrenci çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Ekim 2012’de toplanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilere hepatit A seroprevalansı ve etkileyen faktörleri ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bir anket formu doldurtulmuştur. Veri toplama aracında araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan, 10 sorudan oluşan demografik verileri sorgulayan sorular, 4 sorudan oluşan sosyoekonomik düzeyi ölçen sorular ve 10 sorudan oluşan hepatit A risk faktörleri ile ilgili sorular vardır. Bu çalışmada anti-HAV IgG sonuçları retrospektif olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Olguların serum örneklerinde anti HAV IgG düzeyleri Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Hastanesi Mikrobiyoloji Laboratuvarı’nda ELISA (Architect, i200oSR) yöntemiyle çalışılmıştır. Sonuçların yorumu üretici firmanın önerileri doğrultusunda; 1 s/co altındaki değerlere sahip numuneler negatif ve ≥ 1 s/co değerlerine sahip örnekler pozitif olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin analizi için SPSS paket programı kullanılmıştır. Veriler değerlendirilirken tanımlayıcı istatistikler, kategorik bağımsız değişkenlerin karşılaştırılması için ki-kare veya Fisher testi kullanılmıştır.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 23,7±1,6 olup, % 59,1’i (n=26) kadındır. Katılımcıların %52,3’ünün (n=23) annesinin öğrenim durumu lise ve üzeri, % 61,4’ünün (n=27) babasının öğrenim durumu yüksekokuldur. Katılımcıların % 36,4’ünün (n=16) sosyoekonomik düzeyi düşük, % 45,5’inin (n=20) orta olarak bulunmuştur. Katılımcıların % 31,8’inin (n=14) 12 yaşına kadar yaşadığı evdeki kişi sayısı 5 ve üzeri olarak saptanmıştır. Katılımcıların %25’i (n=11) üniversite öğrenimi öncesi kreş ve/veya yurtta kaldığını, % 27,3’ü (n=12) çocukluk dönemindeki el yıkama alışkanlığının orta-kötü olduğunu belirtmiştir. Katılımcıların %4,5’inin (n=2) çocukluk döneminde evindeki kullandığı içme suyunun kuyu/tulumba suyu olduğu, %56,8’inin (n=25) ise şebeke suyu olduğu saptanmıştır. Katılımcıların %20,5’i (n=9) çocukluk dönemindeki evinin atık sisteminin foseptik olduğunu belirtmiştir. Serum örneklerinin sadece 12’sinde (%27,3) anti HAV IgG pozitif olarak bulunmuştur. Baba öğrenim durumu ve en uzun süre yaşanılan bölge anti HAV seropozitifliğini etkileyen bağımsız faktörler olarak belirlenmiştir.

Sonuç ve Öneriler: Çalışmamız hepatit A enfeksiyonuna duyarlılığın ileri yaşlara kaydığını göstermektedir. Hastalığın ileri yaşta daha ağır ve komplikasyonlu seyredebileceği göz önüne alındığında risk altındaki bir grup olarak tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin tıp eğitimine veya en azından klinik çalışmalara başlamadan önce hepatit B’de olduğu gibi, hepatit A infeksiyonu açısından serolojik olarak taranması ve yakalama (catch up) bağışıklama programlarının oluşturulması uygun görünmektedir.

Bu çalışma Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 5. ve 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin sürekli kaygı ve mesleki kaygı düzeyleri ve bunları etkileyen etkenlerin saptanması amacıyla yapılmıştır. Kesitsel tipteki bu çalışmaya 101 öğrenci katılmıştır. Veriler, sosyo-demografik sorular, 17 soruluk mesleki kaygı anketi ve 20 soruluk Sürekli Kaygı Ölçeği 2 sorularından oluşan bir anket formu kullanılarak Ekim 2012 tarihinde toplanmıştır. Öğrencilerin sürekli kaygı düzeyinin (42.5 ± 9.1) ve mesleki kaygı düzeyinin (37.9 ± 10.1) orta düzeyde olduğu saptanmıştır. Kız öğrencilerin (40.6 ± 5.1) erkek öğrencilere (35.4 ± 10.5) göre meslekleri ile ilgili daha fazla kaygı duydukları saptanmıştır (p=0.010). Öğrencilerin en çok, tıpta uzmanlık sınavını kazanamama, uzman doktor olamama, çalışma yeri ile ilgili belirsizlik ve acil hastayla baş etme konularında kaygıları olduğu bulunmuştur. Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 5. ve 6. sınıf öğrencileri arasında hem sürekli kaygı ve hem de mesleki kaygı yaygındır. Bu konuda, kampüste psikolojik danışmanlık ve destek birimlerinin oluşturulması ve kullanımının sağlanması gerekmektedir.

Objective: To evaluate stressors, coursework stress and coping strategies such as wishful thinking and problem solving coping among medical students. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a private medical school of Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 240 students were selected through random sampling technique from first year to fourth year medical students. Validated questionnaires were used for data collection. Data was entered on SPSS version 20. Descriptive analysis was performed to report the frequency of stressors. Pearson correlation test was performed to test correlation between coursework stress and coping, independent t test was performed to test the mean difference of academic stressors on the basis of gender and ANOVA was performed to test the mean difference of stress and coping strategies scores between years of study, p-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean (SD) age of the students was 20.98 (1.46) years. Majority of the students were females. In general, medical students frequently used wishful thinking and problem solving as coping strategies. Academic related stressors (mean=2.48, SD =0.82) were found to be predominant in all the years of study followed by social related stressor. Conclusion: Student who were frequently using the coping techniques seem to experience high level of coursework stress. Third year medical students were seen to be more stressed out, followed by fourth year students. Least amount of stress was seen in the first year. Academic requirements were found to be the most prevalent stressor.

INTRODUCTION Smoking among adolescents and young adults is epidemic. This study aims to evaluate
the rate of smoking and the knowledge and attitudes on smoking cessation techniques among healthprofession
students in a University.
METHODS This cross sectional study was conducted among 338 (70.4%) first 3-year students of
the Faculty of Medicine (FM) and the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation (SPTR) in
Pamukkale University during January 2010.
RESULTS A total of 338 students participated in the study; 177(52.4%) from the FM and 161 (47.6%)
from SPTR. Of all smokers (20.8%), 14.9% were current smokers. The prevalance of current
cigarette smoking was higher among male students (22.9%) than female students (6.1%) (p<0.001).
The prevalance of current cigarette smoking increased significantly with age (p<0.001) and grade
(p=0.029). Students who had smokers in their family (19.3%) were more likely to smoke than others
(10.1%) (p=0.001). 36 students (76.6%) have tried to quit smoking and 29 (60.4%) wanted to quit
smoking in these days. 45.5% showed middle and higher nicotine dependence. 56.4% found useful to
consider an on-campus smoking cessation clinic and 57.2% found the idea of peer-assisted smoking
cessation useful.
CONCLUSIONS On campus smoking cessation clinics, and besides physicians and psychologists, peerassisted
smoking cessations approach may be useful in the effort of smoking cessation of university
students.

Introduction Interpreting, performing and applying research is a key part of evidence-based medical practice, however, incorporating these within curricula is challenging. This study aimed to explore current provision of research skills training within medical school curricula, provide a student-focused needs assessment and prioritise research competencies. Methods A international, cross-sectional survey of final year UK and Irish medical students was disseminated at each participating university. The questionnaire investigated research experience, and confidence in the Medical Education in Europe (MEDINE) 2 consensus survey research competencies. results Fully completed responses were received from 521 final year medical students from 32 medical schools (43.4% male, mean age 24.3 years). Of these, 55.3% had an additional academic qualification (49.5% Bachelor's degree), and 38.

Ethics, also called moral philosophy, is a branch of philosophy that researches, concepts and principles related to the essence
and basis of moral. In this study, it was aimed to examine academic ethical values of medical faculty students. The study was designed as a
cross-sectional descriptor in quantitative research design. Study’s sample size was calculated as 313 at 95% confidence interval (n=313). The
scale developed by Sevim was preferred for the study. In score analysis of scale, total score was calculated as 137.28±13.22 (minimum: 91,
maximum: 165). In analysis of scale total scores by years, mean scale
scores of second year students were calculated as 143.37±11.50 as highest. In evaluation of scale scores of participants according to education
period (pre-clinical, clinical), it was found that mean score of preclinical students (139.75±13.15) was higher than clinical period students
(134.76±12.85) in total score, and it was found that two groups were
statistically significant. The difference has been shown. When findings
of the study are evaluated, it is seen that values score of students for scientific research is at a good level. It is believed that most of the students participating in the study have basic knowledge on scientific
research and publication ethics. It can be said that implementation of a
horizontal and vertical integrated education program model, which is
based on organ/system-based graduation goals, is effective for primary
health problems of society by making use of domestic and international examples in the faculty where study was conducted.

Giriş ve Amaç: Üniversite öğrencileri akademik başarıyı amaçlamanın yanında fırtınalı bir dönem olan ergenlikten yetişkinliğe geçmektedirler. Birçoğu öğrenim görmek için aile ortamından ayrılarak yeni bir çevreye uyum sağlamakta, ekonomik sıkıntılar yaşamakta ve birçok psikososyal değişimlere uyum sağlamak durumunda kalmaktadırlar. Tüm bu stresler öğrencilerin fiziksel ve ruhsal sağlıkları için tehlikeli olabilir. Yapılan çalışmalar depresyon, anksiyete ve stresin üniversite öğrencileri
arasında yaygın psikolojik sorunlar olduğunu göstermektedir. Stresle başa çıkma tarzları da ruh sağlığı açısından koruyucu rol oynamaktadır. Geleceğin sağlık alanında çalışacak olan bu gençlerin eğitim başarısı ve gelecekteki kariyer gelişimi için ruh sağlığı sorunlarının erken teşhisi ve önlenmesi önem taşımaktadır. Depresyon, anksiyete ve stres gibi ruhsal sağlık sorunlarının ve bunları etkileyen faktörlerin belirlenmesi, bu
popülasyonda uygun tarama ve müdahale programlarının geliştirilmesine olanak sağlayacaktır. Gençlik döneminde yeterli ve uygun başa çıkma tarzlarının kullanılması gençlerin uyum sorunlarının çözümünde büyük katkılar sağlamaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinin depresyon, anksiyete ve stres durumları ile bunları etkileyen etmenlerin irdelenmesi ve stresle başa çıkma
yöntemlerinin belirlenmesidir.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu çalışmanın evrenini, 2013-2014 öğretim yılı içerisindeki Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi öğrencileri oluşturmuştur. Örnek seçimine gidilmeden evren üzerinde çalışılmış ancak anket formlarının uygulandığı günlerde devamsız olan ya da anket formunu doldurmak istemeyen öğrencilerin çalışma dışında tutulması nedeniyle 383 (%54,3) öğrenci çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır. Veri
toplama aracında araştırmanın bağımsız değişkenleri olan 7 demografik soru, 4 sosyoekonomik düzeyi ölçen soru ve araştırmanın bağımlı değişkenleri olan 21 depresyon, anksiyete ve stresi ölçen soru ve 30 stresle başa çıkma tekniklerini ölçen soru vardır. Sosyoekonomik seviye “Aile Refah Ölçeği” (ARÖ) ile saptanmıştır. ARÖ 1 (puan:0-3) düşük, ARÖ 2 (puan: 4,5) orta ve ARÖ 3 (puan: 6,7) yüksek refah düzeyini göstermektedir. Lovibond tarafından geliştirilen 21 soruluk Depresyon-Anksiyete-Stres Ölçeği 4’lü likert tipi bir derecelendirmeye sahip olup her bir alt boyut 0 ile 21 puan arasında değişmektedir. Alt boyutların her birinden alınan puanların yüksek olması, bireyin ilgili probleme sahip olduğunu ortaya koymakla beraber depresyon için 5 puan ve üzeri, anksiyete için 4 puan ve üzeri, stres için 8 puan ve üzeri olanların bu probleme sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Folkman ve Lazarus tarafından geliştirilen, “Stresle Başa Çıkma Tarzları Ölçeği” 4’lü likert tipi bir ölçek olup, kendine güvenli yaklaşım (KGY), iyimser yaklaşım (İY) ve sosyal destek arama (SDA) (probleme yönelik/aktif stresle başa çıkma yöntemleri) ile çaresiz yaklaşım (ÇY) ve boyun eğici yaklaşım (BEY)
(duygulara yönelik/pasif stresle başa çıkma yöntemleri) olmak üzere 5 alt faktörden oluşmaktadır. Puanların yüksekliği kişinin o tarzı daha çok kullandığını göstermektedir. Çalışma öncesinde gerekli kurumsal izinler, etik kurul izni ve çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin onamları alınmıştır. Verilerin analizi için SPSS kullanılmış olup Mann Whitney U veya Kruskal Wallis testi uygulanmıştır.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 20,7±1,8 olup %54,6’sı (n=209) kız öğrencidir. Katılımcıların %55,4’ünün (n=212) annesinin eğitim düzeyi lise ve üzeri iken, %75,5’inin(n=289) babasının eğitim düzeyi lise ve üzeridir. Öğrencilerin %31,3’ü(n=120) ailesinin yanında kaldığını belirtmiştir. Katılımcıların %35,2’sinin (n=135) sosyoekonomik düzeyi düşük,%40,2’sinin(n=154) ise orta olarak saptanmıştır. Öğrencilerin depresyon puan ortalaması 5,1±3,9 olup %49,6’sının(n=190) puanı 5 ve üzeridir. Öğrencilerin anksiyete puan ortalaması 4,2±3,4 olup %52,5’inin (n=201) anksiyete puanı 4 ve üzeridir. Öğrencilerin stres puan ortalaması ise 7,1±3,9 olup %44,6’sının (n=171) stres puanı 8 ve üzeri olarak bulunmuştur. 24 yaş ve üzerinde olan
öğrencilerin ve sosyoekonomik düzeyi daha düşük olanların depresyon puanı, baba eğitim durumu lise altında olan öğrencilerin anksiyete puanı, anne eğitim durumu lise altında olan öğrencilerin depresyon, anksiyete ve stres puanları daha yüksek bulunmuştur (p<0,05). Stresle başa çıkma yöntemleri ele alındığında öğrencilerin en çok kendine güvenli yaklaşım yöntemini, en az ise sosyal destek arama yöntemini kullandıkları bulunmuştur. Erkek öğrencilerin KGY ve İY yöntemini, anne öğrenim
durumu lise altında olanların BEY yöntemini daha fazla kullandığı bulunmuştur (p<0,05).

Sonuç ve Öneriler: Tıp fakültesindeki öğrencilerinde depresyon-anksiyete ve stres yaygın olup, özellikle 24 yaş üstü ve anne-baba eğitimi düşük olan öğrenciler risk altındadır. Ayrıca anne öğrenim durumu düşük olan öğrenciler ile kız öğrenciler pasif stresle başa çıkma yöntemlerini daha fazla kullanmaktadırlar. Bu nedenle, özellikle risk altında olanlar başta olmak üzere tıp fakültesi öğrencilerine bu konularda destek sağlayacak merkezlerin etkinleştirilmesi gerekmektedir.

Purpose:This study was conducted to evaluate knowledge, attitudes and behaviors about global warming and its health effects among 1st grade and 4th grade students in Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine.

Materials and methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted among 1st grade and 4th grade students in Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine in April 2016. A total of 355 (80.5%) students participated to study, 268 students (79.7%) were from the 1st and 87 students (82.8%) from the 4th grade. The questionnaire consisted
a total of 52 questions that includes 6 questions about sociodemographic characteristics, 20 questions about knowledge, attitudes and behavior about global warming and 26 questions about the health effects of global warming.

Results:The mean age of the students was 20.29 ± 1.76 and 56.9% were female. 21.3% of students stated that they did not know greenhouse gases, and 10.5% presume that nuclear energy as a clean energy source. 4.4% of stud ents presume that global warming is inevitable and 28.6% stated that they were not taking individual action against global warming. Students' average knowledge score about the health effects of global warming was 20.9 ± 4.6. Least known subjects regarding health effects of global warming were that global warming can lead an increase in yellow fever, malaria and diarrheal diseases (%47.2; %58.3; %61.7 respectively).

Conclusion: Students' average knowledge score about the health effects of global warming were high. However, some diseases caused by global warming were not known sufficiently by students. Students’ general knowledge about global warming was good, though there were insufficiency and misinformation about some issues. Increase in the content of the issues and update according to current conditions about global warming and its health effects in environmental health lectures in medical school can be recommended.

Approximately 5 million essential neurosurgical cases are unmet each year, all in low- and middle-income countries (1). After the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery described the absence of global surgery from global health discourse in January 2014 (2), the field of neurosurgery quickly recognized the importance of increasing equity in care globally (3-5). Although existing initiatives in global neurosurgery have focused on neurosurgeons and trainees, medical students represent a promising group for sustainable long-term engagement. We characterize why medical students are fundamental to success, outline the importance of incorporating medical students, and delineate how to increase medical student interest and participation in global neurosurgery.

Medical student burnout is currently incredibly common. Recent studies report that approximately 50 percent of students had scores indicative of burnout on the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Burnout can become chronic, and up to 73.2% of the afflicted fail to recover while they are trainees. This is significant because burnout profoundly affects the inner world of the physician and places them at a higher risk of depression, substance use disorder, and suicide; in turn, burnout impacts their professional behaviors and the quality of patient care. This dissertation explores the hypothesis that negative emotions that arise from unresolved ethical, technical, behavioral, and existential discomforts and their role in mediating burnout; this includes the discomforts experienced due to the lack of decision-making power held during medical training. This study has been performed to determine the trait anxiety and future occupational anxiety levels of the 5th and 6th year medical students at Pamukkale University and their contributing factors. 101 students participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected in October 2012 by questionnaire, consisting of socio-demographic data, 17 questions about occupational anxiety and 20 questions of the Trait Anxiety Inventory II. Trait anxiety levels of students (42.5 ± 9.1) and occupational anxiety levels (37.9 ± 10.1) were found to be moderate. Female students (40.6 ± 5.1) were found to be more anxious about their profession than male students (35.4 ± 10.5) (p = 0.010) were. Students were most concerned about succeeding in the medical specialization exam in medicine, not being a specialist doctor, being uncertain about the place of work and coping with emergency unit patients. Both trait anxiety and occupational anxiety were prevalent among the 5th and 6th graders at the Faculty of Medicine, Pamukkale University. It is necessary to establish and ensure the use of psychological counseling and support units in the campus.

Purpose: To describe and evaluate the implementation of an instrument and process to assess and monitor professional attributes in médical students. Method: The instrument was developed following a survey of professional attributes of concern displayed by médical students. This was followed by development and validation, amongst médical faculty staff and students, of the instrument and its supporting process. Evaluation was by recording participation rates by staff and by determining the consistency of the instrument across dimensions and across clerkships. Implementation in practice is described by using a case study based on one school's first year of use amongst all the students. Results: In its first year of use 7,418 forms were distributed to 376 students and 6,621 forms were returned (89%). The instrument's reliability was greatest where staff were diligent in ensuring thorough implementation. The process was able to detect students of concern and provide efîective remediation and ongoing monitoring. Conclusion: The process that has been developed is sensitive, robust and is able to detect, monitor and remedy attributes traditionally regarded as difficult to define and défend. The strengths of the process lie in (l) clear définitions of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors, (2) reliance on observations by more than one person and over more than a single time period, (3) the ability to provide a longitudinal view of student's progress.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the internet addiction prevalence and contributing factors among medical faculty students in Pamukkale University.

Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among medical faculty students at Pamukkale University in November 2011. 386 (71.4%) students participated in the study. Data were collected with a questionnaire consisting of two parts. The first part of the questionnaire contains 24 questions including socio-demographic data, and the second part contains 20 questions of the Internet Addiction Test developed by Young. Family Affluence Scale was used to determine the socio-economic level of participants.

Results: 211(54.7%) participants were girls. The mean score of dependency index is 22.9±15.6. In terms of internet use, 363 (94.0%) participants were found to be normal users, 20 (5.2%) were risky users and 3 (0.8%) were addicted users. The mean of internet use per week was 11.5±11.7 hours (the limits of 0 to 130 hours). In terms of the time spent on the internet, 44.3% (n=171) of participants used internet less than 1 hour per week;
28.2% (n=110), between 1-2 hours; and 27.5%.(n=105) more than 2 hours. Internet addiction prevalence was 7.4% in men and 4.7% in women (p = 0.371). However, 33.7% of men used the internet more than 2 hours per week, the ratio was 21.9% in women (p=0.017). Age, class, socioeconomic factors and smoking does not affect the status of being a risky or addicted user.

Conclusion: The rate of risky or addicted use of internet is low among medical faculty students. Studies with a large number of participants to examine the factors that affect internet addiction in a more detailed way are needed to be done.

AIM: Susceptibility to hepatitis A infection is shifting to older ages due to the improvements in the economic and environmental conditions, and increasing in the level of education. However, the severity of the disease increases with age. The aim of this study was to examine hepatitis A seroprevalance and contributing factors in the 6th year medical faculty students in Pamukkale University.

METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the 6th year medical faculty students at Pamukkale University in October 2012. 44 students (91.6%) participated in the study. Data is evaluated by descriptive statistics, and either the Pearson Chi-square or the Fisher’s test was used to determine the statistical differences between categorical variables.

RESULTS: The mean age of the students was 23.7 ± 1.6, and 59.1% of students (n = 26) were women. 12 serum samples (27.3%) were positive for anti-HAV IgG. Fathers’ education and the longest lived area identified as independent factors affecting anti-HAV seropositivity.

CONCLUSION: As health care personnel, the 6th year medical students are at risk. Either at the beginning of medical education or before clinical training, students should be screened for hepatitis A and catch up immunization programs should be initiated.

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the status of sharps and needlestick injuries of interns and internal-surgical medicine research assistants in Pamukkale University Faculty of Medicine Hospital.

Material and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on total 333 health worker including 123 interns and 210 internal-surgical medicine research assistants. Data collection was conducted by a questionnaire consisted of 23 questions including 6 questions about sociodemographic characteristics and 17 questions about work-life of the participants. Participants’ sharps and needlestick injury rate was compared in terms of age, gender, marital status, work-life characteristics.

Results: 78.1% of residents and 48.8% of interns stated that they injured with sharps during training or their professional life (p<0.001). The most common type of injury was needle stick injury (84.7% of residents, 70.0% of interns). Sharps and needle stick injury incidence in the last 1 year was 36.6% in residents and 30.3% in interns (p=0.247). More than half of the injuries (65.8% of residents, 53.7% of interns) occurred in 9 hours and above shifts. 91.1% of residents and 98.5% of interns did not report the injury to the occupational health and safety department. Only 9.5% of residents and 6.5% of the interns stated that they participated in the training about sharps and needlestick injuries organized by the hospital. 16.2% of residents and 10.6% of interns found the precautions sufficient taken by the hospital. 76.7% of residents and 72.4% of interns immunity to Hepatitis B was enough (took up 3 doses of vaccine or had enough titer).

Conclusion: This study revealed that residents and interns have a high incidence of sharps and needlestick injuries; it is found that training and precautions taken by the hospital were insufficient. Educations and precautions about sharps and needlestick injuries for medical students and residents are needed.

ÖZET Amaç: Bu çalışma Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 1. , 3. ve 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin stresle başa çıkma yöntemleri ve bu yöntemlerin sosyode-mografik özelliklerle olan ilişkisini incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmamız kesitsel tipte bir araştırma olup, 2012 yılı Haziran ayında Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 1. , 3. ve 6. sınıf öğrencileri arasında tamamlanmıştır. Katılımcılara Folkman ve Lazarus tarafından geliştirilen " Stresle Başa Çıkma Tarzları Ölçeği " uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 21,9±2,7 olup, % 55,2'si kız öğrencidir. Katılımcıların % 42,7'si 1. sınıf, % 42,7'si 3. sınıf ve % 14,6'sı 6. sınıf öğrencisidir. " Kendine Güvenli Yaklaşım " erkeklerde (19,9±4,2) kadınlara (18,3±3,3) göre yüksek bulunmuştur (p=0,005). " İyimser Yaklaşım " erkeklerde (13,4±2,5) kadınlara (12,3±2,2) göre yüksek bulunmuştur. Çoklu analizler erkekler (p=0,006) ve yaşı daha büyük olanların (p=0,026) " Probleme Yönelik/Aktif " stresle başa çıkma tarzını benimsediğini, 1. ve 3. sınıf öğrencileri (p=0,01) ve (p=0,03) " Duygulara yönelik/Pasif " stresle başa çıkma tarzını daha sıklıkla kullandığını göstermektedir. Sonuç: Tıp Fakültesi öğrencileri stresle başa çıkma yöntemleri içerisinde en fazla " Kendine Güvenli Yaklaşımı " , en az ise " Sosyal Destek Arama " yöntemini kullanmaktadır. Erkekler ve yaşı büyük olanlar " probleme yönelik/aktif " yöntemleri daha fazla kullanmaktadır. Tıp fakültesi öğrencileri-nin stresle başa çıkma konusunda destek sağlayacak merkezlerin etkinleştirilmesi, bu ve benzeri çalışmaların sonuçlarının öğrencilere yönelik verile-cek hizmetlerin kalitesini arttırmak için kullanılması uygundur. Objective: Aim of the study is to examine the methods of coping with the stress among the 1 st , 3 rd and 6 th year medical faculty students at Pamuk-kale University and to examine the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and these methods.

Material and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among the 1 st , 3 rd and 6 th year medical faculty students at Pamukkale University in June 2012. Folkman and Lazarus' 'Ways of Coping Scale' was applied to participants.

Results: The mean age of the students was 21.9± 2.7 and 55.2% were female. 42.7% of students were in the 1 st , 42.7% in the 3 rd , and 14.6% in the 6 th grade. The method of 'Self Confident Coping' was higher in men (19.9±4.2) than women (18.3±3.3) (p=0.005). The method of 'Optimistic' was higher in men (13.4±2.5) than women (12,3±2.2) (p=0.005). Multivariate analyzes showed that men (p=0.006) and older age groups (p=0.026) used 'Problem-focused/Active' style of coping with stress, participants in the 1 st and 3 rd class (p=0.01) and (p=0.03) more frequently used 'Emotion-focused/Passive' style of coping with stress.

Conclusion: Medical students are mostly using the method of 'Self Confident Coping' and infrequently using the method of 'Seeking of Social Support'. Men and older ones mainly use 'Problem-focused/Active' style of coping. Health services for medical students to provide support about coping with the stress need to be activated and the results of this study and similar studies need to be used to improve the quality of services for students .

Purpose:This study aimed to examine knowledge, attitude and behaviour about genetically modified organisms in medical faculty students in Pamukkale University.

Materials and methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted among medical faculty students at Pamukkale University in June 2013. 377 students participated in the study. The questionnaire includes 43 questions created by researchers. 9 of these questions were about socio-demographic data, 34 of them were about genetically modified organisms. Data were evaluated by descriptive statistics and either the Pearson Chi-square or the Fisher’s test was used to determine the statistical differences between categorical variables.

Results:81.4% of students who participated in the study think their knowledge about GM foods is insufficient. 82.4% of preclinical students and 56.2% of the clinical stage students stated that GMOs are produced in Turkey (p <0.001). 88.3% of preclinical students and 66.1% of the clinical stage students stated that GMOs is imported in Turkey (p <0.001).

Conclusion: Study results revealed that inclusion of training activities about GMOs to the curriculum of medical
schools is appropriate and necessary.

Traditionally few students have had the opportunity to contribute to high-quality clinical research. Over the last five years, collaborative networks have empowered students and trainees to participate in high-impact multicentre studies that have potential to change clinical practice and improve patient care. The UK Foundation Programme Application System (FPAS) should recognise the significant contributions of students participating in collaborative studies when ranking final year medical students applying for the Foundation Programme, encouraging a culture of positive engagement with audit and research. Postgraduate research collaboratives are regional and national networks of trainees who work together to run prospective multicentre research which identify and address areas of practice where there is a need for research for patient benefit [1]. For example, the National Sepsis Audit investigated the care of emergency general surgery patients, finding that whilst sepsis is a common presentation, adherence to severe sepsis guidelines is incomplete in the majority of patients [2]. Similarly, the National Appendicectomy Audit found wide variation in the care and outcomes of patients undergoing appendicectomy, challenging surgeons to evaluate their outcomes more closely [3]. Trainee collaboratives have also run randomised controlled trials, such as Reinforcement of Closure of Stoma Site, a trial testing a novel surgical intervention; prophylactic biological mesh to prevent incisional hernia following stoma closure [4]. Inspired by the well-established postgraduate trainee research collaborative model, Student Audit and Research in Surgery (STARSurg; www.starsurg.org) is a student-driven, national research network across the UK and Ireland. Founded in 2013, it aims to engage students in multicentre research studies early in their career, embedding clinical research as a fundamental part of their future evidence-based medical practice.

Background: The devastating Syrian crisis has raised concern regarding the social acceptance of smoking especially with water pipe use becoming a growing epidemic. We aim to determine the prevalence of cigarette and water pipe smoking among university students, along with identifying the addictive behavior among university students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Syrian Private University during World No-Tobacco Day, in Damascus, Syria during the war crisis. The survey consists of 4 sections: socio-demographic information, Fagerstr€ om Test of Nicotine Dependence, attitude towards water pipes, and perspective about smoking. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Sciences version 25.0 (SPSS Inc., United States.) Results: Of the 622 participants, 429 (69%) were males with a mean age of 21.3 AE 3.1 years. The prevalence of tobacco smoking was 320 (51.4%), 208 (23.8%) for cigarettes, and 112 (18.0%) for water pipe. Smoking was significantly higher among male non-medical university students. The majority were low to moderate dependent when assessed by the Fagerstr€ om Test of Nicotine Dependence. Conclusions: This study showed a very high prevalence of smoking indicating the need for smoking cessation programs, access to effective quitting treatments, and mass media campaigns to diminish smoking among the youth.

The Student Audit and Research in Surgery collaborative (STARSurg, www.starsurg.org) was founded in 2013 to empower students to participate in high-quality academic projects, gain an understanding of audit and research methodology and develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills. As of March 2017, more than 2,400 UK medical students from across the UK and Ireland have participated in STARSurg’s observational studies. STARSurg shares the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) vision of ensuring that all doctors acquire research skills that enable them to effectively contribute to high-impact multicentre studies that have the potential to change clinical practice and improve patient care.

Giriş ve Amaç: GDO’lu gıdaların olası yararları ve zararları ile ilgili toplumu bilgilendirme konumunda olan hekimlerin ve dolayısıyla hekim adaylarının bu konuda yeterli bilgi düzeyine sahip olmaları gerekmektedir. Bu çalışma Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi öğrencilerinin genetiği değiştirilmiş organizmalar hakkındaki bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarını incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır.

Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel tipteki bu çalışmanın evrenini, Pamukkale Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 2012-2013 öğretim yılı içerisinde okuyan tüm öğrenciler oluşturmuştur. Örnek seçimine gidilmeden evren üzerinde çalışılmış, ancak anket formlarının uygulandığı günlerde devamsız olan ya da anket formunu doldurmak istemeyen öğrencilerin çalışma dışında tutulması nedeniyle 377(% 62,93) öğrenci çalışma kapsamına alınmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Haziran 2013’de toplanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilere araştırmacılar tarafından literatür taranarak oluşturulan genetiği değiştirilmiş organizmalar hakkında bilgi, tutum ve davranışları ortaya koymayı amaçlayan bir anket formu doldurtulmuştur. Veri toplama aracında araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulan 9 sorudan oluşan sosyodemografik verileri sorgulayan sorular (yaş, cinsiyet, sınıf, anne-baba eğitim durumu, sosyoekonomik düzey) ve 25 sorudan oluşan genetiği değiştirilmiş organizmalarla ile ilgili sorular vardır. Öğrencilerin bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarını ölçen 25 soruluk ikinci kısım 4’lü skalada değerlendirilmiştir (1.Kesinlikle katılmıyorum, 4.Kesinlikle katılıyorum). Bu 25 ifadeden oluşan içeriğin Cronbach α değeri 0,82 olarak belirlenmiştir. İstatistiksel analizlerde “kesinlikle katılmıyorum” ve “katılmıyorum” ifadeleri birleştirilerek “katılmıyorum” başlığı altında, “kesinlikle katılıyorum” ve “katılıyorum” ifadeleri birleştirilerek “katılıyorum” başlığı altında değerlendirilmiştir.1. , 2. ve 3. sınıf öğrencilerinin verileri birleştirilerek “preklinik dönem öğrencileri” olarak, 4. , 5. ve 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin verileri ise “klinik dönem öğrencileri” başlığı altında değerlendirilmiştir. Verilerin analizi için SPSS paket programı kullanılmıştır. Veriler değerlendirilirken tanımlayıcı istatistikler, kategorize değişkenler arasındaki anlamlı farkları belirlemek için ki-kare veya Fisher testi kullanılmıştır.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 21,8±1,8 olup, % 50,9’u (n=192) kız öğrencidir. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %66,0’sı (n=249) preklinik dönem öğrencileridir. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin %81,4’ü GDO’lu gıdalar hakkında yeterli düzeyde bilgiye sahip olmadığını düşünmektedir. Preklinik öğrencilerin %82,3’ü (n=205) klinik dönem öğrencilerin ise %92,1’i (n=117) GDO terimini daha önce duyduklarını belirtmiştir ve bu fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (p=0,016). Preklinik öğrencilerin %70,7’si (n=176) GDO’yu daha önce TV-radyodan duyduğunu belirtmiştir. Preklinik ve klinik dönem öğrencilerinin üçte biri GDO’nun en çok tarım zararlılarına ve zirai ilaçlara karşı dayanıklılığın sağlanması konusunda kullanıldığını belirtmişlerdir. Hem preklinik hem de klinik dönem öğrencilerin yaklaşık yarısı en çok tarımsal üretimi yapılan GDO’lu ürünün soya-mısır-pamuk olduğunu doğru olarak bilmiştir. Hem preklinik hem de klinik dönem öğrencileri GDO kullanımının sakıncasının en çok insan ve hayvan sağlığı konusunda olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Hem preklinik hem de klinik dönem öğrencilerinin üçte biri GDO’yu en çok üreten ülkenin ABD olduğunu doğru olarak bilmiştir. Preklinik öğrencilerin % 82,4’ü (n=201), klinik dönem öğrencilerinin %56,2’si (n=72) Türkiye’de GDO üretimi yapıldığını belirtmiştir ve bu fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (p=<0,001). Preklinik öğrencilerin % 88,3’ü (n=218), klinik dönem öğrencilerinin %66,1’i (n=84) Türkiye’de GDO ithalatı yapıldığını belirtmiştir ve bu fark istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmuştur (p<0,001). Hem preklinik hem de klinik dönem öğrencilerinin üçte biri farkında olarak GDO tükettiğini belirtmiştir. Katılımcıların genetiği değiştirilmiş organizmalar hakkında bilgi, tutum ve davranışlarının sınıflara göre karşılaştırılmasında “GDO’lu gıdalar Türkiye’nin rekabet gücünü artırır”, “GDO’lu gıdalar devlet denetiminde olursa güvenli şekilde tüketilebilir” ve “GDO’lu gıdanın güvenilir olduğuna ikna olursam tüketirim” önermelerine verilen yanıtlar açısından preklinik ve klinik dönem öğrencileri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık bulunamamıştır (p>0,05).

Sonuç ve Öneriler: Çalışma sonuçları toplumun gıda güvenliğine ilişkin önemli katkısı olan sağlık çalışanlarının bu konudaki bilgi düzeyinin arttırılmasının ve olumlu tutum geliştirilmesi konusunda müdahalelerin gerekliliğini ve sağlıklı (yeterli ve dengeli) beslenme ile ilgili GDO’ları da kapsayan kimi güncel konuların eklenmesi tıp fakültesi müfredatına eklenmesinin uygun ve gerekli olduğunu göstermektedir. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin en çok bilgi edindiği araç olduğu tespit edilen basın yayın organlarında da konuya yer verilmesi bir çözüm yöntemi olarak düşünülebilir.

Conclusion: There is an association between the amount of pathology residents’ preclinical educational activity and their mean performance on in-service examinations.

More on Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Medicine: The Isolation of Black Females To the Editor: We recently read the research report by Person and colleagues on the topic of measuring diversity and inclusion in academic medicine. The topic of diversity and inclusivity is an important one for all the health professions, and other scholars will no doubt benefit from the useful tool (the Diversity Engagement Survey) the authors have generously shared with us. The authors found “black, Hispanic/ Latino, female, and LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) respondents reported lower degrees of engagement than their counterparts,” and noted these findings are consistent with extant literature on these topics. We would like to briefly call attention to one key finding of this study that we have evidenced at both a medical school and a veterinary medical school in the United States as we believe it is a particularly important topic that deserves additional research.
