Marital Quality

This article examines how perceiving concealment in close relationships influences marital well-being. It suggests that the perception of concealment from a partner signals separateness from one’s partner and contributes to feelings of perceived partner exclusion. These feelings of exclusion, in turn, should negatively affect relational quality. These predictions are tested in a prospective study among 199 newlywed couples. Results suggest that perceiving concealment reduced marital adjustment and trust and increased conflict over time. Importantly, change in perceived partner exclusion mediated these effects. This article demonstrates that the perception of concealment (a) has deleterious effects on relational well-being in the long run and (b) is harmful in part because it elicits feelings of exclusion.

The present study aims to address the psychological motivations behind social media use, focusing on its under-explored regulatory function in the context of coping strategies and emotional regulation among teachers. This exploratory research explores the relationship between social media engagement and its impact on educators' stress management and emotional regulation mechanisms. Methods: To investigate this relationship, the study utilized two key instruments: The coping inventory for stressful situations and the Italian version of the difficulties in emotion regulation scale. These tools were administered to a sample of 214 Italian teachers, predominantly female (90.7%), with ages ranging from 25 to 65 years (Mean±SD 47.19±9.02 years). The study employed correlation analysis to assess the associations between social media use in addition to various coping and emotional regulation strategies. Results: The correlation analysis revealed a nuanced relationship between the usage of certain social media platforms and a higher inclination toward a problem-oriented coping style, alongside a decreased sense of a lack of negative emotional control. Accordingly, while social media can serve as a tool for problem-oriented coping, it may also hinder the ability to disengage from negative emotional states. Discussion: The results of this study shed light on the potential of social media as a resource and a challenge in the emotional and professional lives of teachers. By identifying specific coping strategies that are positively and negatively associated with social media use, the research points toward possible interventions that could mitigate the adverse effects of social media. This could include developing targeted support mechanisms to enhance teachers' ability to manage stress and regulate emotions effectively, thereby optimizing their use of social media in a way that supports their psychological well-being.

Pair-bonding has been suggested to be a critical factor in the evolutionary development of the social brain. The brain neuropeptide arginine vasopressin (AVP) exerts an important influence on pair-bonding behavior in voles. There is a strong association between a polymorphic repeat sequence in the 5′ flanking region of the gene ( avpr1a ) encoding one of the AVP receptor subtypes (V1aR), and proneness for monogamous behavior in males of this species. It is not yet known whether similar mechanisms are important also for human pair-bonding. Here, we report an association between one of the human AVPR1A repeat polymorphisms (RS3) and traits reflecting pair-bonding behavior in men, including partner bonding, perceived marital problems, and marital status, and show that the RS3 genotype of the males also affects marital quality as perceived by their spouses. Research mostly in the context of developed economies shows that the transformation of household structure from single male breadwinner families to dual earner families is associated with decreasing rates of poverty as well as lower levels of income inequality. This paper uses micro data from Turkish household income and budget surveys for 2003 and 2010 to examine to what extent household labor supply structure has an impact on family income, poverty and income inequality. We classify married couple households by labor supply of husbands and wives and explore any differentials in household income levels, poverty rates as well as income inequality measures amongst dual earner versus male breadwinner households. The aim of this article is to clarify the educational look at emotional relations of spouses from religious teachings perspective; the methodology used is descriptive-analytic. On such bases, some of the religious teachings within the capability of the spouses in terms of emotional relations have been contently described and their educational outcomes between the spouses have been analyzed. The findings delineate that of the most important cognitive and attitudinal emotional capabilities are optimism and having a blessing attitude toward the spouse. In behavioral and practical aspect, intimate relations with spouse and having appropriate and enjoyable sexual relations are important capabilities. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh work family conflict terhadap kepuasan perkawinan dari persepsi suami. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif asosiatif. Pengambilan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan kuesioner. Sampel terdiri dari 100 responden dengan kriteria suami bekerja dan memiliki istri bekerja, memiliki anak dan bertempat tinggal di Jakarta Selatan. Data diperoleh menggunakan Skala work family conflict (14 item pernyataan) dan Skala kepuasan perkawinan (66 item pernyataan). Teknik analisis data uji prasyarat menggunakan uji normalitas Kolmogorov-Smirnov dengan diperoleh Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) 0,094 > 0,05 yang membuktikan bahwa data kedua variabel berdistribusi normal. Background: In psychiatric research it is often assumed that detrimental effects of negative life events on mental health can be buffered by a number of positive life events. However, there is no convincing empirical evidence that this assumption is correct; it can even be argued that positive life events act as additional stressors rather than as buffers, leading to a continuation of a chaotic life course and an increase in the risk of affective disorders. Aim: To find out whether positive life events were associated with a higher risk of the occurrence of mood disorders and whether such an association could be explained by a number of negative life events that individuals had experienced. Method: We used data from 4,796 adults, aged 18-64, collected at two measurement moments (i.e. 1997 and 1999) of NEMESIS, a Dutch prospective-epidemiological study. As a basis for our measurements we used dsm-iii-r diagnoses of major depressive disorders and dysthymia and the Life Events and Difficulties Schedules LEDS. Results: A multivariate (MPlus) path analysis demonstrated that positive life events were not, in themselves, significantly predictive of affective disorders. Positive life events were only related to the risk of mood disorders when they co-occurred with a high number of negative life events. Conclusions: In accordance with a chaotic life-course hypothesis, positive events were not found to buffer the detrimental impact of negative life events, but when they are part of an erratic course of life they can pose an extra threat to an individual’s mental health.

Women's hours of housework have declined, but does this change represent shifts in the behavior of individuals or differences across cohorts? Using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys, individual and cohort change in housework are examined over a 13‐year period. Responsibility for household tasks declined 10% from 1974–75 to 1987–88. For individual women, changes in housework are associated with life course shifts in time availability as well as with changes in gender attitudes and marital status, but are not related to changes in relative earnings. Cohort differences exist in responsibility for housework in the mid‐1970s and they persist over the 13‐year period. Overall, these findings suggest that aggregate changes in women's household labor reflect both individual change and cohort differences.

In this study of 125 heterosexual long-wed couples, we examined both spouses’ personality traits and relative differences in partner perceptions of personality as predictors of marital satisfaction, simultaneously for both husbands and wives. As hypothesized, each of the Big Five personality traits emerged as significantly associated with marital satisfaction though significant between-trait and between-sex differences were observed. Most notably, trait levels predicted marital satisfaction less consistently than positive reporting discrepancies (i.e., comparatively greater extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and lower neuroticism reported by spouses vis-à-vis their partners’ self-descriptions). Lagging economic conditions, especially in rural areas cause residents leave their hometown or become a migrant to get a job in order to meet the family needs. This study aimed to analyze the influence of family characteristics, family interaction, and decision-making on marital quality in families with migrant husband. The design of this study was cross sectional study involving wives, who had migrant husbands and teenage children (age 12-18), as respondents. The study was conducted in Banyuresmi Village, Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia which were selected purposively. Data were collected through interview using questionnaire. The results showed that family income and conjugal interaction were the factors that allowed an increase in marital quality.
