ÖZET Lykia Bölgesi'nin önemli limanlarından biri olan Andriake kentinde, 2009 senesinde başlatılan kazılarda, İ.S. 5.-6. yüzyıla ait bir sinagog yapısı ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Kazılar sırasında, yapının apsis bölümünün zemin altındaki, ana kaya alanı arasındaki boşlukların, kentin seramik çöplüğünden getirilen, malzeme ile dolgu yapıldığı gözlemlenmiştir. Atık alanından getirilen malzemeler, Hellenistik Dönem'den Bizans Dönemi'ne kadar tarihlenmektedir. Özellikle Hellenistik ve Roma seramikleri söz konusu bu alanda yoğun olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Bu seramikler içerisindeki en yoğun grup terra sigillatalardır. Ele geçen, 193 parça içerisinde, Doğu Sigillatalardan A, B, C, D grubu, yerel üretimler, Sagalassos Kırmızı Astarlıları, İtalya Sigillataları, Geç Roma seramikleri vardır. Doğu Sigillata gruplarından, DSA ve DSD (Kıbrıs) seramikleri, iki ayrı çalışmada tarafımdan değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada ise, Doğu Sigillatalarından, Batı Anadolu üretimi DSC grubu değerlendirilecektir. Seramikler; hamur-astar yapıları ile formlarına göre gruplandırılmıştır. Bu grupların kap dağılımları ile sayısal yoğunlukları değerlendirilmiştir. Andriake liman kentindeki sigillataların incelenmesiyle, limanın farklı dönemlerde, hangi kentlerle ticari ilişkileri olduğu ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. UNCOVERED EASTERN SIGILLATA C GROUP FROM ANDRIAKE PORT PERGAMON ÇANDARLI SIGILLATA ABSTRACT Excavations started in 2009, in the city of Andriake-one of the important ports of Lycia-, a synagogue from 5th-6th century A.C. was unearthed. During the excavations, it was revealed that the gaps between the main rock area under the floor of the apse section of the structure, were filled with the material brought from the ceramic waste area of the city. These materials brought from the disposal area are dated from the Hellenistic Period to the Byzantine Period. Especially Hellenistic and Roman ceramics were outnumbering. Hellenistic and Roman Period samples were evaluated. Among these ceramics the Terrasigillata's are higher in number. Through 193 pieces, there are East Sigillata's A, B, C, D groups, local productions, Sagalassos Red lining, Italian Sigillatas and Late Roman ceramics. DSA and DSD (Cyprus) ceramics from Eastern Sigillata groups were assessed in two separate studies. In this study, Western Anatolian production DSB, DSC groups will be evaluated from Eastern Sigillata's. Ceramics are classified according to their dough-lining constructions and their forms. Following this their container distributions and their numerical densities were evaluated. Depending on the examination of the Sigillata's in Andriake Harbor City, it has been tried to find out the trade-related connections between particular ports with particular cities, at different times. Specific to researches on the ceramics found in Andriake, the maritime trade in the Lycian region and the distribution of these ceramics to the inner regions were questioned.

My PhD thesis given to Department of Classical Archaeology, Ankara University in 2002. The thesis is about coin finds from Arykanda between 1971-2000 and contains 2174 coins. A copy of the thesis is shelved in the British Museum, Coins and Medals Department (see Lycian section). Lighthouse at Patara. Response to a Critic
The scope of the article covers a criticism for an article published in ZPE 164 (2008) relating to the lighthouse at Patara and Sextus Marcius Priscus, Lycian Governor of Lycian Province. Author deals with the Delikkemer inscription which was previously published by himself and with an inscription of baths at Patara. He criticizes the critics made by the authors of the above mentioned article in ZPE.

Lykia ve Karia coğrafi bölgeleri, Anadolu’nun Akdeniz’i Ege’ye bağlayan güneybatı köşesinde yanyana komşu iki kültür bölgesini oluşturur. Bu iki bölge sadece kara değil, aynı zamanda Akdeniz ile Ege sularının birbirine karıştığı deniz komşusudur. Ortaklık iki bölgenin Paleocoğrafyasına da yansımıştır. Dağlar her iki bölgeye de hakimdir. Denize bağlanan nehir yatakları boyunca ulaşım ağı üzerindeki yerleşimler, bu ulaşım ağı yoluyla taşınan kültürel etkilere her dönemde açık kalmıştır. Denize dik inen dağlar arasında oluşan gemilerin sığınmasına elverişli derin koylar çevresinde oluşan liman yerleşimleri Ege ve Akdeniz kültürlerinin, kıyılardan dağlarla ayrılan iç bölge yerleşimleri ise daha çok Orta ve Batı Anadolu kültürlerinin etkisinde gelişim göstermiştir.

This study aims to  create a general view about field surveys and excavations carried out in the ancient city of Phaselis in 2018. The focus of this study contains interdisciplinary urban and field archae-ology  carried  out  both  in  the  city -polis  and  ports-  and  in  territory -largely  in  the  borders  of  Kemer, Tekirova and Çamyuva- within the field surveys carried out between the dates July 9th– August 3rd 2018. As  for  the  settlement  archaeology  performed  between  the  dates  August  7th  and  November  28th  2018, some theoretical and practical research were done relating to the documentation, cleaning, conservation and restoration of the Tetragonal Agora, Small Bath and notably the Theater and the Hadrians’ Gate.

Olympos Antik Kenti, bugün Teke yarımadasında bulunan Likya Bölgesi'nin güneybatısında, Antalya ilinin Kumluca ilçesinde bulunmaktadır. Konumuz olan levhaların tespit edildiği kilise ve vaftizhane ise kentin kuzeyinde yer alan dini ve idari işlevlerin bir arada yürütüldüğü Piskoposluk Sarayı'nın merkezinde bulunmaktadır. Kiliselerde genellikle ambon, templon, solea, altar ve nef ayrımlarında kullanılan levhalar, Olympos Piskoposluk Kilisesi ve Vaftizhanesi'nde farklı dönemlerde yapılmış kazı çalışmalarında tespit edilmiştir. Yapılarda tespit edilen levhaların büyük bölümü, Likya Bölgesi örnekleriyle uyumlu olarak kireç taşı malzemeden üretilmiştir. Bazı örneklerde ise ithal mermer malzemenin de kullanıldığı görülmüştür. Buluntu yerleri dolayısıyla genellikle nef ayrımlarında kullanıldığı anlaşılan levhalarda, bitkisel ve geometrik motiflerin yoğun olarak bir arada kullanıldığı görülmekle birlikte figürlü, yazıtlı ve sembolik motiflerin işlendiği örnekler de bulunmaktadır. Bezeme teknikleri ele alındığında ise Likya Bölgesi örnekleriyle benzer olarak kazıma, kabartma ve geniş oyma gibi tekniklerin kullanıldığı görülmüştür. Yerel kireç taşı malzemeden oluşturulmuş örneklerde tespit ettiğimiz ilgi çekici bir diğer özellik ise bezemeli ya da bezemesiz yüzeylerinde bulunan kılavuz çizgileridir. Kılavuz çizgileri, taş ustasının levhada kullanacağı motifleri düzgün ve simetrik bir şekilde yerleştirmesine yardımcı olur. Bu yönüyle levhaların yapım sürecine ve tasarımına dair oldukça ilgi çekici bilgiler sağlamaktadır. Sonuç olarak bu makalede Olympos örneğindeki levhalar, Likya Bölgesi örnekleriyle birlikte ele alınıp değerlendirilmiştir.

The Olympos ancient city is located in the Kumluca district of Antalya, southwest of the Lycian region which is located on the Teke peninsula. The church and baptistery, where the slabs are the subject of our study, are located in the center of the Episcopal Palace, where religious and administrative functions in the north of the city are carried out. Slabs which are used in churches for ambon, templon, solea, altar, and nave separation, were found in the different excavations periods in the Episcopal Church and Baptistery of Olympos. Most of the plates in the buildings were produced from limestone material which are similar to the examples in the Lycian Region. However, in some of the slabs, marble materials were also used. It is seen that the slabs, which are mostly used in nave separations due to the finds, are processed with herbal, geometric, figured, inscribed and symbolic motifs. When the ornament methods on the slabs are taken into consideration, it was seen that techniques such as incised, relief, and large carving were used in the same way as in the Lycian Region. Another interesting feature that we found in the samples made up of local limestone material is the guiding lines on their decorated or undecorated surfaces. These guide lines helps stone mason to place the motifs on the slab in a smooth and symmetrical way. In this respect, it provides very interesting information about the construction process and design of the slabs. Consequently, the slabs in this article were considered and evaluated together with the examples of the Lycian region.

Above-ground burials in south-western Anatolia can be seen as result of the influence of both an older, local Lycian and the Persian-Anatolian tradition. Their adaptation within Greek part of population emerged new structural and decorative elements in funerary architecture. Rock-cut tombs can be found not only in the Lyco-Carian borderland, but also in central Caria, i.e. in areas where a substantial representation of the Carian ethnic group is attested. Among very common iconographic motifs are funeral feasts and offering ceremonies as well as depictions of riders or warriors (seeking to realism?). Banquet scenes are nowadays understood more in the context of social status than cult significance. However, at least partial cult meaning cannot be avoided. A space designated for cult activities (e.g. banqueting) is characteristic for almost all types of Hellenistic funerary monuments. The raised stepped podia of Hellenistic built tombs and al- tars elevated on pedestals (in the case of temenoi with an underground chamber) are similar in character to the rock-cut tombs carved above the ground. The presence of altars in front of rock-cut tombs can only be assumed in combined built and rock- cut tombs. However, the symbolism of offering (and consumption) is present as depiction of “funeral banquet” on the façades. On the other hand, in the case of built tombs, altars are important cult and decorative elements. Both an altar and a relief depiction of a funeral banquet can be understood as carriers of the same or similar ideological message. The tomb became not only a resting place of the deceased but also a place of “formal worship” - with perhaps more ideological than religious aspects.

This paper examines a number of Lycian coins dated to the second half of the fifth century BC which were either previously unknown, or inadequately published. Some attributions are discussed and in some cases new solutions are proposed. A stater from Patara attributed to Wekhssere II was actually struck by Ukhssepddimi, a previously unknown dynast of the late fifth century BC. Links with the issues of Wakhssepddimi are discussed and coins previously attributed to Wekhssere I are shown to have been actually struck by Wakhssepddimi. Further new coins are discussed and attributed to a previously unknown dynast named Wakhssebllimi,
minting c. 440–430 BC.

Yüzey/Sualtı Araştırmaları 2015 yılında Kekova Adası batı bölümünde yer alan ve günümüzde Tersane Koyu olarak anılan doğal koy ve bu koyun güneyindeki kentsel yerleşim alanına ek olarak Tersane Koyu, Kuzey Yerleşim ve adanın doğu ucundaki Karaöz Mevkii’nde sualtı çalışmaları kapsamında yapılmıştır.

This paper argues that the images of seated figures shown in the reliefs from the Harpy Monument at Xanthos indicate a new era of self-representation and political identity in Lycia in the early fifth century.  Compared to earlier pillar tomb reliefs, the cycle of reliefs includes a range of people rather than 'deeds' (or lion motifs).  Rather than deities, this group of people of differing genders and ages can be understood, as argued by scholars such as Zahle, to refer to members of an aristocratic house.  In this sense, it is the first truly 'dynastic' monument, emphasising the concept of dynasty, in a context of political change in Lycia and beyond.

Bu tez içerisinde, Myra ve limanı Andriake kazılarında, mezarlardan ve çeşitli yapılardan ele geçen 130 takı ve takı ögesi kataloglanmıştır. Bu takılar tipolojik, stilistik, ikonografik ve teknik açılardan incelenmiştir. Tez kapsamında, küpe, yüzük, takı taşları, kolye sarkaçları, bilezikler ve boncuklar gibi takı türleri bulunmaktadır. Bu örneklerden bazıları takım oldukları için ya da birbirleri ile ilişkili görüldükleri için bağlamlarından kopmamaları amacıyla tek katalog numarası altında değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışma içerisinde incelenen takılar, tipolojik gruplara ayrılmıştır. Her grubun, objelerin form ve bezeme özelliklerine göre oluşturulmuş alt grupları bulunmaktadır. Özellikle küpe buluntuları Roma Dönemi'nin ana küpe tipolojisiyle paralellik göstermektedir. Büyük bir çoğunluğu döneminin ana tipolojisini takip eden takı buluntularında çok çeşitli malzemeler kullanılmıştır. Myra ve Andriake takıları oldukça zengin tipolojik ve ikonografik özellikler taşımaktadır. Mezarlardan ve çeşitli yapılardan ele geçen takıların neredeyse tamamında kullanım izlerinin gözlemlenmesi bu takıların sadece mezar armağanı olmadıklarını aynı zamanda günlük hayatta da kullanılmış olan ölü eşyaları olduklarını göstermesi açısından önemlidir. Bu durum, Myra ve Andriake takılarının ölü armağanı ya da adak için özel olarak üretilmediklerini gösterir. Takılar, birey tarafından yaşarken kullanılmış ve ölüm sonrası yaşamında da ona eşlik etmeye devam etmişlerdir. Andriake'deki ÇA-5/B açma numaralı mezar ile Demre Çayı'nda bulunan altı lahit, antik dönemde soyulmamış oldukları için daha doğru değerlendirme yapmamıza olanak sağlamaktadır. Mezarlardan ele geçen örnekler M.S. 2.-3. yüzyıl takı geleneğinin izlerini taşır. Kataloğumuzdaki en erken takı örneği olan 29 katalog numaralı Hermes betimli gemme M.S. 1.-2. yüzyıl aralığına tarihlendirilmiştir. Buluntular arasındaki en geç tarihli örnek ise İslami Dönem'e tarihlendirilen içte opak mavi cam ipliği bezemeli 93 katalog numaralı burgulu bilezik parçasıdır. Myra ve Andriake takılarının büyük çoğunluğu M.S. 2.-3. yüzyıllara aittir. Altın ve süs taşlarının yoğun olarak kullanıldığı bu zaman aralığına ait takıların neredeyse tamamı mezarlardan ele geçmiştir. M.S. 5. yüzyıldan sonra ise Hristiyanlık sembolleri ve anlatıları ile bezenmiş bronz takıların kullanımı artmıştır. Andriake'de bulunan takılarda hem doğu hem de batı ikonografisinin kullanılması kentin kültürel dokusunu açıkça yansıtmaktadır. Roma ile Mısır arasında ticari ilişkilerin bulunması ve Andriake'nin bu noktada önemli bir liman olması göz önünde bulundurulduğunda uluslarası nesne trafiğine sahne olması şaşırtıcı değildir.

In this thesis, 130 jewellery and jewellery components were catalogued from the graves and various structures in the excavations of Myra and its harbour Andriace. These jewels were examined in terms of typological, stylistic, iconographic and technical aspects. Within the scope of the thesis, there are jewellery types such as earrings, rings, gemstones, pendants, bracelets and beads. Some of these examples have been studied under a single catalogue number, so that they do not break from their context as they are pairs or seem to be related to each other. Jewels studied in this thesis is divided into typological groups. Each group has subgroups formed according to the form and decoration features of the objects. In particular, the earrings follow the general typology of the Roman Period. A wide variety of materials are found in jewellery finds, the vast majority of which follow the main typology of their time. The jewellery of Myra and Andriake has very rich typological and iconographic features. It is important to observe the traces of wear marks that indicate usage in almost all jewels recovered from graves and various structures, as they show that these jewels aren't not only burial gifts but also burial gifts used in daily life. This indicated that jewels of Myra and Andriace aren't specially produced for grave gifts of votive. These jewels were used while living by their owner and continued to accompany him or her in his post-mortem life. The grave numbered ÇA-5/B in Andriace and the six sarcophagi in Myros Stream allow us to make a more accurate assessment since they were not peeled in the ancient period. Jewels obtained from the graves bear the traces of the jewellery tradition of 2nd-3rd centuries AD. The earliest jewellery example in our catalogue, the ring stone with the depiction of Hermes (Cat. No. 29), is dated to 1st-2nd centuries AD. The latest example among the finds is the twisted bracelet with an opaque blue glass trail decorated inside, dated to the Islamic Period (Cat. No. 93). The vast majority of Myra and Andriace's jewels belongs to 2nd-3rd centuries AD. Almost all of the jewels belonging to this period, in which gold and ornamental stones were used extensively, were recovered from the graves. After the 5th century AD, the use of bronze jewels decorated with Christianity symbols and narratives increased. The use of both eastern and western iconography in jewels found in Andriace clearly reflects the cultural texture of the city. Considering the commercial relations between Rome and Egypt and Andriace is an important harbour at this point, it is not surprising that there is international object traffic in Andriace.

Eskiçağ bilimleri sahasında son yıllarda ülkemizde büyük bir yayın patlaması olduğu malum. Bunun en önde gelen nedenlerinden biri turizm bağlantılı hızla artan antik kent kazıları, diğeri ise internet tekniğinin sunduğu bilgiye ulaşılabilirlik olanaklarının olağanüstü artmasıdır. Kazı ve araştırmalardan elde edilen malzemeler, internetin sunduğu olanaklar ve masaüstü yayıncılık tekniği ile hızla yayına dönüştürülebilmektedir. Bugün her isteyen, hemen her istediği bilgiye internet yoluyla ulaşabilmektedir. Ancak bu teknik kolaylık, ulaşılan bilgiyi iyi, doğru ve amacına uygun kullanma metotlarını elbette sunmamaktadır. Bundan sonrası yine insana kalmaktadır. Kişisel hırslar bazen bilim kisvesi altında palavra edebiyatına dönüşebilmektedir. Öte yandan Üniversitelerde akademik yükseltme ya da ödüllendirme kriterleri bilimsel yayınların sadece niceliğine, nitelikleri ise sadece içi boş simgelere (A&HCI, CC/A&H vb.) endekslenmiş olduğu için, bu yolla bilimsel üretim yapma akademik kariyer yanı sıra maddi kazanç sağlama aracı haline de dönüştürülmüştür. Bu durum yayın sayısının artmasını sağlamış, fakat niteliğin analitik denetimden uzaklaşması sonucunu doğurmuştur. Örneğin bir makale yukarıda verilen indeksli ya da hakemli bir dergide yayımlanmış ise, buna artık “iyi” gözüyle bakılmakta ve denetime tabi tutulmamaktadır. Ama bu yolla ortaya çıkan bol sayıda yayınlar ciddi bir şekilde mercek altına alındıklarında, özellikle Türkçe yayınlarda, inanılmaz derecede akademik bir yozlaşmanın yaygınlaşarak normalleştiği gözlemlenmektedir. Bilimdeki bu hafife alma eğilimi özellikle de profesörlük unvanını bu tür ölçütlerle elde etmiş bazı genç kuşak akademisyenler aracılığı ile bilimsel etkinliğin normal seyri haline getirilmekte, kamu kurum ve kuruluşları yanıltılmakta, kamu paraları çarçur edilebilmektedir. Bu tür pseudobilim mutlaka kurumsal denetim altına alınmalıdır. “Kurumsal” diyorum, çünkü eleştiriler ülkemizde hala kişisel antipatiden ve husumetten kaynaklanan çamur atmalarmış gibi algılanmaktadır. Nesnel eleştiri geleneğinin gelişmediği ve hoş karşılanmadığı bir ortamda bilimselliği ve onun etik değerlerini savunmak adeta huzursuzluk çıkarmak, hatta hakaret etmekle özdeş tutulduğundan, bu konuda sesini yükseltmek isteyenleri ya caydırmakta ya da suya sabuna dokunmadan eleştiri cambazlığı yapmaya zorlamaktadır. Bu derginin bundan önceki sayısında tamamen bilimsel ölçütler çerçevesinde kaleme aldığım eleştiriye Patara kazı başkanı tarafından yazılı bir cevap verilmesi yerine sözel sert bir çıkışla tepki gösterildiğini esefle öğrendim. Bu kazının başkanlığını yapan kişilere sempatimin olmadığı malum; bunu gizlemiyorum. Ama kişilere duyulan antipati ya da sempati bu kişilerin bilirbilmez yaptıkları sözlü ya da yazılı beyanlarına karşı eleştirel hakkımı kullanmama ne engel ne de vesile oluşturur. Onlar da, “bize antipati duyanın eleştirisi kabul olunmaz” deme hakkına sahip değildirler. Tam tersine antipati, ortada bir dost kayırma endişe ve kuşkusu olmadığı için, bunun yanı sıra bilimsel objektiflikten de ödün vermemek kaydıyla, eleştirel fikrin daha yalın ve açık şekilde ortaya konmasını sağlar. Buna rağmen, eleştiriye muhatap kişide bilimsel bir haksızlık yapıldığı izlenimi doğmuşsa, bunun da yolu yine bilim olmalıdır; sözlü çıkışmalar değil. Ben eleştirilerimi bilimsel belgelere dayanarak yapıyorum. Bu belgeleri çürütecek yeni buluşlar ve belgeler mevcut ise, bunları kamuoyu kadar ben de gerçekten büyük bir memnuniyetle öğrenmek isterim. Eleştirilerimde ağırlıklı olarak Patara ya da Likya coğrafyasına odaklanmamın sebebi ise açıktır. Bilimsel etkinliklerim, akademik görevim ve hala sürdürmekte olduğum saha araştırmalarım nedeniyle çeyrek asra yakındır bu coğrafyada yoğunlaştı ve bilgi birikimim özellikle bu konuda derinleşti. Bu nedenle burada yapılan bilimsel etkinliklere, özellikle bilimsel açıdan tehdit oluşturan konulara hassasiyet göstermem doğaldır. Aşağıda ele aldığım iki konu gerek güncellikleri açısından gerekse okuyucuyu yanılgıya düşürme rizikoları bakımından önem taşımaktadırlar. Bunun yanı sıra kamu kaynaklarının çarçur edilmesi de söz konusudur.

Self-definition of ancient Greeks was created under the influence of socio-historical events, reflecting both, the relationship between Hellenes themselves and attitudes towards others. The influencing factors for self-definition of ancient Greeks were a shared myth of descent, a shared territory, and a shared sense of history. Many scholars assume, that a sense of Greekness among Dorians, Ionians, Aiolians and others was finally crystallized throughout the number of military conflicts in which they were involved during the Classical period. Its seems probable that Athens played a major role both in the invention of the barbarian concept and in the substitution of cultural for ethnic criteria in the self-definition of Greeks. In their self-definition, Greeks seem to be deliberately stylized as antinomy to what they considered to be typical for others. Similarly, as a response to the strong pressure from the Persians, the national awareness of the Anatolians was formed. Interestingly, in some cases local ethnic groups had chosen cultural elements that had been associated with Greeks or Persians for their self-definition.

way to the village of Ahırtaş in the province of Antalya.
These inscriptions are dedications by eirenarches, anteirenarches and diogmites. However, our studies of these
inscriptions show many were published in an
incomplete or faulty manner. These inscriptions were
reread by us in 2009 and as a result of our research, we
made some addenda and corrigenda, which were
published in 2015. This article presents three new
inscriptions of eirenarches and diogmites, which were
not seen by G. Moretti.
1) Translation: Kotes’ grandchild Kotes’ son eirenarch Kotes (dedicated his vow).
A named Κότης is known from Kocain Cave. But He is not eirenarch. Eirenarch Kotes in our inscription has previously been unattested.
2) Translation: Zbanabis’ son eirenarch Matidianus (dedicated his vow).
A named Ζβαναβις is a new epichoric name.
3) Translation: Diogmites Menis, Menneas, Germanos, Zosimon, Zotikos (dedicated their vow).


İtalyan Araştırmacı G. Moretti, 1919’da Antalya’nın
Ahırtaş Köyü yolu üzerinde Hisardağ/İndağı’ndaki Kocain Mağarası’nda keşfettiği eirenarkhes, anteirenarkhes
ile diogmites’lerce adanmış 28 adet yazıtı 1926 yılında
yayımlamıştır. Ancak Moretti yazıtların bir kısmını eksik
ve hatalı olarak yayımlamış ve daha sonra birçok araştırmacı da yazıtları aynı şekilde yayımlamaya devam etmiş-
tir. Bu yazıtlar tarafımdan 2009 yılında yerinde kontrol
edilmiş; addendum et corrigendum yapılarak 2015 yılında
yayımlanmıştır. Bu makalede yazıtların kontrolü sırasında, daha önce G. Moretti tarafından görülmeyen ikisi
eirenarkhes’lere, diğeri ise diogmites’lere ait üç yeni yazıt
sunulmaktadır.

The issue of geopolitical networks in the Mediterranean has been the subject of much
lively debate in recent years. In the framework of a program funded by the French National Research Agency (CNRS), a program consisting of philologists, historians, archaeologists and geologists took a model of integration into the larger whole of the Mediterranean the ancient regions of Caria and Lycia.
At the end of this program, a symposium held in Bordeaux provided an update on the progress of our knowledge of indigenous languages, foreign influences in the architecture and funerary practices. In turn, recent archaeological and epigraphic discoveries as well as historical developments underlying them shed light on the dynamism and ability of Caria and Lycia to adapt to political changes in the Mediterranean world.

This paper uses three case studies to show that the integration of ‘art historical’ and economic history/landscape archaeology approaches can provide otherwise unattainable insights of importance for historical models, here specifically pertaining to the regional dynamics and impacts of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, but applicable more broadly.


"In a recent review of a book entitled Critical Approaches to Ancient Near Eastern Art, Daniel T. Potts raises the question of whether, regardless of the fact that one can speak of a discipline of Ancient Near Eastern Art History, one should.  He explains that he is not concerned with denying the necessity of studying art or imagery as a part of Ancient Near Eastern History, but that it is insufficient for ‘a deep understanding of the ancient Near East’.  This worry picks up an ongoing tension between ‘ancient historians’ and ‘art historians’ (or archaeologists who work with imagery) that seemingly survives the pictorial turn and the use of ‘visual culture’ as a term emphasizing the whole visual sphere as historical source material, and revolves around the extent to which the ‘larger historical picture’ is sufficiently seen as an end goal. As Potts notes, dress and ornamentation, the ‘wigs, powder, perfume and silk’ of the French Revolution period, for example, can be considered epiphenomena.  On the other hand, ‘Warfare, fiercely contested battles for hegemony and struggles over access to irrigation water and arable land all formed part of the crucible in which Early Dynastic society and its hyper-competitive city state system were forged.’  Serious stuff, not to mention masculine, giving one pause to consider in the context of this book how the fate and trajectory of ‘art history’ within various sub-disciplines might depend on historically gendered scholarship cultures...."
